  • I've had difficulty trying to fall asleep for weeks now; or at least haven't had a good night's rest in some time. I've even tried about 30 minutes ago, but I couldn't sleep then too.

I dunno; do you guys have any tips?

  • 1. Try to go to bed at the same time every night, try to wake up at the same time every morning. Sounds like dumb advice, but keeping to a routine is helpful if all it turns out to be is a messed up sleep schedule.

    2. No electronics or anything for at least an hour before your bedtime. Sucks and sounds lame, but take up reading or doing crosswords/sudoku or something like that before bed instead. LCD screens or TV and the like can sort of mess up your internal clock or something. (I don't know exactly how this works but it's always one of the #1 insomnia suggestions. xD)

    3. Try to cut out anything with caffeine in it after lunch time or within 6ish hours of your bedtime at least.

    4. If you can't sleep, get up and do something (read, etc.) for a bit until you feel fatigued and try to sleep again. :/ My mom always says to do the opposite but I feel better when I do this when I absolutely can't sleep since it feels more productive and I don't get as frustrated. But resist the urge to watch TV, get on the computer, or play video games. It just gets you all wired up.

    5. Try melatonin in conjunction with step #1. It's used to treat jet lag and it really helps reset your sleep schedule if that's the problem. Other over-the-counter stuff you can try are generic sleep aids, something like Gravol that might make you drowsy, or I think magnesium tablets help too.

    6. Worst case, see a doctor! If it's been a while, you might start getting sick if you don't start getting a good night's sleep so you might just need some basic sleeping pills for a week to get you back on track and otherwise, they can suggest other options too. :> (You shouldn't rush to the sleeping pill option because it SUCKS to get dependent on them for sleep. x_X)

I've had insomnia since early October and I've been managing it with sleeping pills and a combination of all these things since January. I'm starting to get over it but if you can steer it off before it gets too bad, it's obviously for the better. xD; Good luck!
