A Whale Of A Good Time

Over the weekend, my girlfriend and I decided to treat ourselves to a good time by doing something new. Thanks to the generosity of a close relative, we ended up driving all the way down to Plymouth, Massachusetts to get a taste of some whale watching on the coast. It was something that either neither of us had ever done before or haven't done in at least a decade of time, so it was pretty exciting to be able to experience such a feat. I was personally very excited because the last time I had gone was in the 7th grade, but I was also a little bit hesitant because of my fear of getting sea sick (like I did last time around.) However, I still wanted to partake in this fun event so I sucked it up.

    Spoiler:
The norm with whale fishing is that it's very hit or miss. There will be days when you go on the water and see a few whales here or there, or you'll be out there and not see a single one. However, we get extremely fortunate with our trip as we ended up seeing probably over 15 whales (which the tour guide said was very unheard of.) We were able to see them feed, surface up close to the boat, and even breach the water by jumping in the air! It was a pretty majestic site to say the least, and something that I think we'll both remember for awhile.

    Spoiler:
The only downside we could really find in the trip was the fact that it took way too long to get out to the feeding zone. Guesstimating the exact time sailing, it probably took us at least 1 hour + to get to the zone where whales most prominently showed up. The trip in itself eclipsed over 4 hours - the bulk of it mainly getting to and from the location - which made both of us pretty bored along the way. Thankfully, we had each other to keep each other company, as I could only imagine how mundane it would be for someone who traveled alone. Plus, the fact that it took so long - or rather eclipsed the amount of time we thought we'd be out there - resulted in myself getting a parking ticket, however thankfully it only amounted to what it most likely would have been to pay for public parking in a lot or garage.

    Spoiler:
Would I do this trip again? Maybe. It all really depends on how long it would take to get out to the area in question. That was at least the consensus that my girlfriend and I came up with at the end of the trip. Still, it was a pretty fun experience to say the least. What about you guys? Have you ever gone whale watching? If not, do you think you might want to? Did you see any whales? Or was it a dud trip? Do you get sea sick? Comment below as I'd love to hear and discuss with you what you have to say about this topic!

  • I've always heard a lot of good things about whale watching, although I'm not much interested in trying it myself. Aside from being a good opportunity to watch some whales, was is it much of an educational experience? What kind of whales were you observing?
