  • A better reason is a month back on irc Andy (ShiningRaichu) was all 'I like when you link to music' or something because I was being obnoxious and doing just that in a channel, and I said 'Maybe I should do a blog of random songs I like and think everyone else should listen to' and he said 'YES'.

So here goes I guess? Every so often I'll do just that and post the youtube video (and probably alternate links. Because youtube sucks with the 'lol your country is BANNED from watching this video'). Also lyrics (if the video doesn't display them) because I like being able to read them when listening so I figure maybe someone else is like me. =p Maybe even do a few songs or stuff I'm not exactly a big fan of if I just want to point something out.

Share your music likes too in comments (e.g. if this song reminds you of another song by all means mention it) because I like to hear new things, and when you're in Australia you tend to miss out on a lot of other bands. And because we all know the majority of radio sucks in any country. Maybe your suggestions may even get shamelessly reused by me! Besides it's as good a reason as any to use blogs on PC again.

So here's a song that was stuck in my head for a good while when the blog idea was about in the first place! 'Those Thieving Birds/Strange Behaviour' by Silverchair, in a fashionably pink video. Fellow aussies may cringe a bit at the word Silverchair because it's That Band with that One Song (Straight Lines) that is Played To Death by the radio stations, and I don't blame them, but I'm fairly sure this got very little airtime and it's a darn good song imo! (Why Radio Sucks #1: One song or two does not a band make, guys!) Ending is a bit slow and I'm not the greatest fan of the part following 'Only eat with uncles' but oh well, no song is perfect. Slow beginning, speeds up to a more upbeat tune, and then concludes like it begun. Good for chilling to and the middle bit is amazing in its own right too, making the build up worth it. Well, imo anyways but why not judge for yourself?

    Alternate link!

The lyrics are quite good in this. For those who want to get possible meanings, the singer had issues keeping his long-distance relationship/marriage together with his wife. Pretty evident in lines with "I'll hold on to the jewellery, like staple-strapped clenched fist and tongs", and when you consider the song title in itself (what would birds be thieving, eh?). Then there's smaller things - swans (mentioned right at the start) usually for instance mate for life. That and another thing I like is that the song tells an actual story. Not something along the lines of 'I'm so hot *****es all the girls/guys want me' or 'I'm in love you're so bewderiful' or 'SHE LEFT ME D=' at any rate. That's what many a good song does imo - not only sound good but have something worthwhile to say or ponder.

Now to figure out what song to do for the next one, oi.

    Next.

I'm not really that much of a fan of Silverchair, so I was quite surprised by how much I liked this song!

  • Late to the party as I just stumbled upon this last night. :P I'll slowly listen to the songs you have so far and post a comment here and there if I have something to say, wee.

Those Thieving Birds is indeed a great song. Wee for songs with story telling lyrics, lol. There are some bands/musicians I know that have a lot of their songs where the lyrics have some meaning to it (G Love, The Mountain Goats, and KT Tunstall are ones off the top of my head). Once I go through my music library and find more songs that are different than the usual I'll let you know, lol.

Whoo! As you know, I love hearing new music, no matter how bizarre (except maybe rap/hiphop, screamo, and other "noise-metal") so this is definately the blog for me. I also know we have similar tastes in music, so I expect I'll see some stuff I like here. I agree about the radio thing. That's why I like Nights with Alice Cooper. He always played lesser known songs.

As for the song itself, I like how unusual it started out, with that piano bit. The first part of the song kind of reminds me of a mix of Radiohead and the Shins. From there, it turns into something else. Something kind of ELO-esque, maybe. Good song, except I didn't really care for the soft part near the end.

  • I thought you might like it, Griff, haha. Hopefully you will find some songs you will quite like!

It does have an unusual beginning, true (it's actually quite well done too - for instance the 'string plucking' sound when he mentions the pond is a very nice touch imo). I also agree that the ending is the worst part of the song, but oh well, it's still great overall imo.
