This idea came to me as I wasted 29 Ultra Balls trying to catch Zapdos in Leaf Green the other day...
What if other products had the same failure rate as Pokeballs?
Example: You buy a new car. The engine catches fire as you pull out of the dealership. You get a replacement. On this one, the driver's door falls off as soon as you try to open it. The third car you get, the fuel tank falls off as you drive off the lot. Fourth time, the rear axle detaches. Finally, on your fifth try, you get a car that doesn't self-destruct on the lot.
Example 2: You go through 17 refrigerators before you finally get one with a working condenser.
In both examples above, suppose that you don't get your money back for the defective samples. Also, suppose that only one company manufactures cars/refrigerators. Just like how it works with Pokeballs in the Pokemon universe.
My take? Pokeballs are unreliable, defective pieces of crap that never should have passed quality control inspections. They would be judged to have "much worse than average reliability" by Consumer Reports. Now that we have a Poke Ball factory in Kalos, I'd like for the X/Y sequel to feature a sidequest where you sue the pants off the owner/president of the Poke Ball Factory under state lemon laws.
Seems to me like Pokeballs are part of an elaborate scam to cheat trainers out of money.
