"Um, Um, what kind of color is 'now'?
    Smile White? Tear Blue?
When you mix them together..." Sketch Switch - Hidamari Sketch OP

Welcome to Hidamarisou, please relax and let all the troubles of your days leave you for a while. What started off as a simple slice of life 4panel comic turned into one of the more recognizable animations by Studio SHAFT. This is by no means an anime to be taken seriously. This show is simple enjoying day to day life.

    Story 6/10.
The premise of the story: Yuno has moved out of her parent's home to attend Yamabuki High School to further her interests in art. She has moved into the eccentric Hidamarisou (Hidamari Apartments) in front of the school. Aside from its location in its uniqueness, Hidamarisou is said to be the home of very eccentric students in the art dept. Now living along with the help of her fellow roommates, Yuno aspires to become a better artist day by day.
The general episode format is nothing special. Yuno wakes up to her alarm in the beginning, attends her classes or whatever needs to get done, arrives home and has dinner with her fellow roommates, bathes, and reflects on the day. Nothing too special, but it's pleasant to watch their day to day life and interactions.

    Character 9/10.

    Spoiler:

These are the four residents of the Hidamari apartments. Their everyday reactions are quite relaxing to watch and never feel forced. They all have their own quirks which makes them all fun to watch.
As for side characters, the antics of the pervy teacher Yoshinoya and her foil, the Principal, never fail to amuse. Sae's "rival", Natsume, never fails to bring a DAW moment with how tsundere she is for her. And Ume-sensei. She doesn't do anything, but she's the cutest, and best pulled off, author avatar, only dropping short comments in the story.

    Art 10/10.
Oh god, the art. This is 100% my bias speaking. Hidamari Sketch has some of the cutest artwork of any anime I've seen. Especially when they turn chibi. As most other fans of this series will attest, their Nutbladder has been severely damaged by this show.
Aside from the artwork of the characters, the show is animated by Studio SHAFT so expect to see some wicked use of surrealism. It's not something expected from this kind of series, but it works so well. You'll also appreciate the titular symbols that they'll use to represent certain characters at times.

    Music 9/10.
I don't judge anime by its soundtrack most of the time, and Hidamari Sketch is no exception. I won't deny that its soundtrack is VERY nice however. Every episode starts with the fun and upbeat J-Pop track, Sketch Switch, letting you know that you'll have a very enjoyable time when watching the episode. The soundtrack for the most part is very calming and pleasant to listen to, but it isn't afraid to get very upbeat when it needs to. The music typically goes to melancholic tones music at the end of the episode, as to set the mood for the reflections upon the day. The show ends with the Acoustic "Organic" Pop track, Mebae Drive. Slightly melancholic in itself, but still somewhat upbeat. A great way to end an episode of a slow paced series like this.

    Enjoyment 9/10.
Even if it was just to hear Sketch Switch in the beginning and Shinmiri during the episode previews, every episode of this series was enjoyable. Admittedly, it does get dull at times, this is a slice of life after all, but you get what you pay for.

    Overall 8/10.
While it is hard to find fault with this series, it isn't too outstanding either. This is slice of life, just like any other. The premise of an art school isn't held up much either as most of the episodes are spent doing things unrelated to art. In the end, if you just want something relaxing and familiar, or just want cute looking girls doing everyday things, Hidamari Sketch is definitely a show you should pick up.

So, I tried an anime review. I know, it sucks. Like everything I do. ⊂(゚ヮ゚)⊃

  • I was doing a review of the first season and not Hoshimittsu or 365. I have a different opinion on those.

Also, spoiled so it wouldn't be tl;dr. :x
