  • Crazy as I may be, I'm back at going for 200 in the Battle Arcade. This time on HeartGold with the team that got to 175 on Platinum. It's been smooth sailing thus far, which feels familiar yet scary in a way. Had a surprising challenge with Dahlia at 49 (let's just say Togekiss got about seven crits and some change), but managed to pull off a 1-3 comeback there with Salamence. Cruising along toward 70, I come upon game 5, #68. The board flickers Aerodactyl, Tyranitar, and Medicham. Nothing too threatening really, the team is pretty much Suicune's kind of dinner.

Having completed some games this round, the game board offers plenty of worthy panels, but being 1 AM, I click just before the two foe burn panels. The result? Ally freeze, one party member starts off with freeze, doesn't that sound inviting. Thankfully it's Salamence, because Umbreon and Suicune should be able to handle this team.

Unsettling start with Umbreon getting Yawn off while Aero spams Stone Edge, only for Aero to wake up first chance after a charm and wish: KO'd Umbreon. (Score: 2 - 3) -2 attack Aero? Not that much of a headline, Suicune enters. I set up calm mind while Aero tries miserably to do significant damage, some critical hits while I rest and set up, but nothing to write home about. Suicune successfully sets up six calm minds, and it's off to sweep town.
    (Score: 2 - 2)

Tyranitar comes in, and I miss-click! Calm mind while sand storm paired with a stone edge get me to a lowish yellow. I quickly surf Tyranitar to death for Medicham to appear.
(Score: 2 - 1) Medicham uses Zen Headbutt! Critical hit! You're kidding me, right? :| Add insult to injury. The only good news is: it's not Medicham with ice punch, thanks to showing off zen, so it's not exactly over. (Score: 1 - 1)

With a frozen parrot and a zenfied opponent, things don't look good. Intimidate plays a small factor while Medicham slams Mence to about ~60% health left or something. Obvious 3HKO, at least. So that means this is it: I either unthaw here or go home. Medicham uses Zen Headbutt, gets me to low yellow...
    Spoiler:

    Just... wow.

  • ...See, here I was hoping that mence would unthaw, and it never crossed my mind that would've missed an outrage, let alone flinch from zen headbutt.

  • Obviously I made some errors, though, which I'll learn from.

    • missing two burn panels, shouldn't have been so eager
    • CM miss-click on tyranitar, dumb move, game costly? I'll run some calcs.
    • playing this late
Still, I've had some terribly haxy matches before, but to raise my adrenaline that high with an unthaw, only to lose? That just... hurts.
