  • So, for those of you who don't know, I live in Kansas. It's in Tornado Alley. Although usually it's just thunderstorms. Also I work in a pizza place in the mall, which is relevant too, I swear. :p

I'm working Friday afternoon. It's about 4:30. I've just gotten off of break, just put a cheese pizza in the oven. We have six of us up front (although one isn't on the clock). Things are moderately busy. The mall is a bit dark due to it being cloudy out, but nothing bad.

Then it starts raining heavily, and the lights flicker a few times. I start to panic just a bit, but hey, they've flickered before. Alarm goes off for a little bit. And then, all of a sudden, the power goes out.

It's complete and utter chaos for a few minutes until... ah hell it was chaos the whole time. It's dark, we can't see worth crap. Our register and soda machine run off electricity. Our ovens are on since they run on gas, though, and we can still access the drawer itself with a key. So my boss calls up her boss and goes "sell everything as fast as we can, cash only." So our normally $3-4 slices of pizza were going for $1. We soon had a large line of people, all stranded in the mall while there's a huge storm outside. It was mayhem because we were all trying to serve people at the same time and we couldn't figure out who had what. Within the next fifteen to twenty minutes, though, we had the line cleared, and apparently we sold about $140 worth of food and bottled drinks. Although the mall itself didn't close, our district manager was smart and let us close shop. It was hard to, though, because we couldn't see, and we were all trying to get out asap. The place was a mess the next morning.

As for the storm itself, I was too busy panicking and serving food that I couldn't really notice. At one point, though, the rain and winds were so bad we looked outside and there was no visibility at all. Apparently winds got up to 95MPH, though. It shows. When I got a ride home on Friday there were large tree branches everywhere. Like, everywhere. A lot of them were bigger than I was. Still are, on the sidewalks. Which I have to walk on. >>;; They'll be here forever.

Amazingly, although it looks like we had a tornado, it was just a really bad thunderstorm. *shrugs*

Anyone else in Kansas and got hit on Friday? :p

  • Call me crazy but life has been so boring lately around home, that I wouldn't have mind having to go through all of that - just the excitement and drama would be the highlight of it all.
