It's been officially 24 hours since the public release statements from Rooster Teeth of employee, animator, and friend Monty Oum. Known by his YouTube works of Haloid and Dead Fantasy, as well as his more well-renowned works on RvB seasons 8 - 10 and the creation of RWBY, Mr. Oum had an unseen allergic reaction during a regular medical procedure that put him in a coma. Ten days later, Monty passed away after being visited from friends and family alike. He was 33 years old.

I'm not writing this to talk about the future of his hit series RWBY or how RvB will fare without him paving the way; yes, these are valid questions, but they are questions nonetheless that can wait for another day. I'm rather writing this post out of pure respect for Monty Oum. Granted, I've never actually met him before in real life - I've met other Rooster Teeth employees though conventions such as PAX East - but since I've been a follower of his work within Rooster Teeth for over three years now, I feel like I should write out something to air out my current emotions.

Life...can be cruel. It can be a real bitch at times. There's no question that Monty was taken away from this earth too soon. Way too soon, and god only knows how his friends and family are going through this hard time. I can remember when a good friend of mine unexpectedly died in 8th grade falling off of a ski lift after having a heart attack and the devastation it brought me. It makes you realize how we really do take life for granted, where in retrospect something perilous could happen to us any day. It can come unexpectedly, and when it does it hits like a train going full throttle right at you.

From what I've read though, Monty didn't take things for granted. He wasn't a lazy, half-asser who took the easy road when it came to his work. When it came to RWBY, he worked 18 hour days seven days a week to make his dream a reality. He even went about taking all of the keys from his laptop that he didn't use to save himself time whenever he worked. Granted, I'm not saying that we should all go about working ourselves into the ground for something, but that just shows the ambition, dedication, and commitment that Monty had for his work and his goals. When he wanted to do something, he drew a big fucking red target around his goal and shot himself like a man out of a cannon towards it. He was just one of those people who had a crazy good work ethic.

Monty was an animator, a creator. He did things, many talented things that have brought so much joy to countless tens of thousands of people. He was an imaginative type of guy who didn't judge himself over the quality of his work, but rather of being able to complete it. He had this saying where "if the show you want to create isn't amazing at the beginning, the important thing is that you start it. Eventually down the line, it will be what you want it be.. That might be season 2, it might even be season 5.. But it WILL get there." He believed that it is perfectly alright if you don't succeed right away at your goals. The real accomplishment comes from the fact that you took the initiative in making your dreams a reality, and eventually, that hard work will pay off. It's this kind of mindset that really added fuel under the fire towards Monty's insanely good work ethic, and why he is held dearly by much of the Rooster Teeth community.

The more I look at that quote, the more I realize how much truth it really held. When I first started up the Daily Bloggity in January of 2014, I had very little success in reaching an audience. Statistics showed that it really wasn't catching the attention of users, and thus on paper and on a mathematical standpoint, it could be viewed as a failure. However, I kept with it. It wasn't the views or the comments that was driving me to blog on, but rather just the act of actually doing it was the true factor. It was a great feeling knowing I was actually creating something for others to see, and just being able to stick with it for so long is such a great feeling that I hope everyone can experience at some point in their lives.

What is your 'show'? What is your 'blog'? What is something that you have put on the back burner for so long now that it's cold to the touch from negligence? It's been said before, but each second in our lives is precious and shouldn't be taken for granted. Live life to the fullest so when you're on your sick bed one day you won't have any regrets. Be imaginative. Be creative. Live. Laugh. Love. Treasure every waking moment that you have on this earth and make a legacy for yourself in whatever you decide to do with your life. As Monty Oum blogged about on October 6th, 2012: "I believe that the human spirit is indomitable. If you endeavor to achieve, it will happen given enough resolve. It may not be immediate, and often your greater dreams is something you will not achieve within your own lifetime. The effort you put forth to anything transcends yourself, for there is no futility even in death."

Monty Oum, rest in peace, for your work and attitude towards life transcended yourself and have made not only an impact on myself, but thousands of people. Hopefully you are up there with the big man now, and maybe someday, I'll be able to meet you up there and shake your hand. It would be an honor.

A fun has been established to assist Monty's family with his medical expenses. If you wish to show your support in that fashion, please visit this link.
