So, Ash never "caught them all", ever, did he? He's not even trying anyore. I'm shocked at this as it was pretty much the WHOLE PLOT of Season 1 (supposedly). I mean, many opening themes center around how you'll learn a lot on your quest to catch them all. And now it's like they're ignoring that it was once the whole point, even though it seems like Ash has always been more interested in battling than catching Pokemon. Am I missing something? It just seems really weird how abandoned that storyline is.

Yes, thats true. Nobody can really "Catch Em All" I mean, geez, say some other guy got an Articuno, right? You technically can't catch it. So, you can't do it really, unless there are multiple legendary pokemon.

Note they dropped the "Gat to Catch Them all" after the 1st season of Johto, ... I'm guessing you don't watch the new anime much

No, I do watch the new anime. I noticed they dropped it, and I wondering why they hung onto it for so long and then just ignored it. Wouldn't it have been more interesting if they met a trainer who really was trying to do that?

That phrase was a 4Kids mistake I suppose. IIRC, the Japanese have a phrase similar to that but doesn't state "em' all" or "all of them", but just to catch pokémon.

Even though now, the phrase is useless with 493+ pokémon.

    catch em none

The (once famous) slogan only really applied to the games. Heck, it didn't really apply at all-it was just that-a marketing slogan.

Besides, with nearly 500-some, I wonder how anybody can even keep track of 'em all?!

That's because, Ash realized you couldn't have a close bond of friendship if you had alot of pokemon! :D!

But maybe they use "Gotta catchem all" because it's a cool motto(and it fit in good with the theme song),
then they changed it because even though the mottos cool it doesn't fit in with the show or something.

It would be difficult to obtain 493+ pokémon. Including a god, time and space monsters, the ancestor of all pokémon, etc.

I though it said that legends don't count towards the GCEA goal...

and in Japanese the phrase is (still) "Poketto Monusutaa, Getto Da ze!" translated it's something along the lines of "Let's get Pokemon!"

    No "ZOMGIMUSTZGETZDEMZALLZ!!!!!!111ONE!!!"

Yeah "Getto da ze!" Makes more sense, maybe Pokemon wouldn't be as criticized as much if they kept it like that (and kept it as Pocket Monsters sooo there wouldn't ba ANY confusion of the meaning of Pokemon. Just keep Pokemon as a nickname. =/)

I'm not surprised that Ash can't catch 'em all, considering the fact that there's now 493 Pokemon. But what does annoy me is that he occasionally sees some pretty strong wild Pokemon, he helps them out of some situation and befriends them, but doesn't capture. His pokeballs are well past their expiration date.

Ya...know I really do wonder if Pokeballs can expire. I mean I'm assuming they can go through tough damage...And would there ever be a new generation of Pokeballs?

But that would be a whole different topic.

On this topic, I think it's just something that shouldn't be poked at too much. Like people said the original phrase wasn't to get them all, and the status of Pokemon Master wasn't associated with getting all different pokemon. (I guess that would be a collector would it not?)
And if he ever did have that dream in mind, remember how stupid in-experienced he was when he was younger. He's figured out now that it's not something he can nor needs to do.

Well, really, the 'Gotta Catch 'em All' bit was added in there to somewhat match Satoshi's "Minna, Pokemon GETTO daze!" line in the Japanese. As well as serving as a way to make people want to buy the games to attempt to catch all the Pokemon. So basically it was there for money-making purposes, more than actually fitting with the TV series. Granted, it did fit partially.. or seemed to at first. The only bad thing is the fact that it didn't fit with the anime at all, after a certain amount of time, yet the Japanese 'Getto' slogan still did. Because that one was just Satoshi telling everyone to catch more Pokemon, and have fun doing it.. rather than 'Gotta catch em ALL! ALL OF THEM. GIVE US YOUR MONEY!'

Well, I guess I don't have to explain, it was just an abandoned slogan:

Gotta catch 'em all! Gotta catch 'em all million of dollars :P.

It would be fairly boring if he just caught every Pokemon he came across and that was the plot of the anime- and I do reckon it was a marketing slogan.

In fairness how long would it take to catch all 493 pokemon that are round nowadays? 151 was a stretch but maybe someone could do it, with all the new pokemon i think it would be impossible

It is kind of weird. That is the one thing most people associate with Pokemon...and it has absolutely no bearing anymore.

Not necessarily...Clicky LOL =P It's quite surprising when I saw this. Wow and for charity.... =/

The Speed Gamers, a group of video game enthusiasts who play for marathon hours to raise money for charities, have announced they will attempt to capture every Pokémon available in North America during 72 straight hours beginning 5 p.m. CST Dec. 19. The gamers will donate proceeds raised during the fundraiser to ACT Today, a nonprofit supporter of people affected by autism.
and ending with There are 491 Pokémon currently available in North America, beginning with BulbasaurDarkrai. To reach the goal, the gamers said they will begin new files of Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, XD: Gale of Darkness, Colosseum and its bonus discs, Pokémon Ranger and My Pokémon Ranch. The Pokémon then will be transferred to a single game cartridge to complete the National Dex.
During the marathon, the group's blog will host a live Web cast of two games being played at a time. The blog will also host a checklist of how many Pokémon the gamers have caught.

It was taken off the RSE game boxes, so they've dropped it for a long time.
