Have you ever noticed someone who isn't handicapped? I mean lately it seems like just about everyone has one of those insignias in their window. It makes me wonder what they define as "physically" handicapped anymore.

I know that they do offer you a temporary one if you have a broken leg or whatever.

There also people that park in the handicapped spots because they are too lazy to walk five miles. I mean it's almost like they would rather make a more crippled person who needs that spot to collapse after walking for so long.

My dad has a physical handicap. He can walk but he has a hard time walking when it comes to very long distances. He has problems with his knees and he has the plates. Whenever we go out, we always have a hard time getting a handicap spot because everyone is in them.

So...have you ever seen someone that probably doesn't need to have one of the handicap insignias? I know I have. Like I said, it makes me wonder what is defined as being physical for a disability anymore. D:

My dad has a bit of a problem himself, although he can manage a few long distance walks, it always seems to be a burden on his back to be walking any needless distances, that's why he uses any of the disabled parking spots and was verified for a badge to show he does genuinely have some sort of handicap that would make him eligible to park there.

This topic came up in the news a little while back and it did show an unrelenting statistic of people in this country, perfectly healthy, parking there for the sake of convenience and in the process depriving genuine users of these spots. TV interviewer tried talking to two people who do this and they ended up swearing at the camera saying "I'll park wherever the ---- I want", and I just found their rudeness and lack of courtesy so disgusting.

I totally agree with you. People are just so damn lazy and it's even worse in america because people are always so lazy nowadays it's like they whine over walking one mile. o_o

My dad is like that too because he can walk distances but it's enough of a burden that he won't unless he really has to. He doesn't like doing a lot of walking because it's such a burden and it really hurts him. He actually has the handicap plates to give him a chance to park in a handicap spot.

People don't care about ones that are severely crippled. I just find it so sick how people don't seem to care about these things, you know? I mean I speak for my dad too because he has so much trouble with his knees that it's enough to make you totally angry for those that are just being lazy couch potatoes.

If they stopped giving handicapped plates to the morbidly obese, I think your problem would be solved.

Some of them have other problems. Obesity leads to a lot of health issues too. You do have a point though because people in america are so overly obese that they seem to be getting plates for the sake of being obese.

But it's not just them it's people who are too damn lazy to walk five miles. Like Signomi said, people have this attitude where they think they can park anywhere they want to. They have no care whatsoever about someone who is crippled. Our society is so screwed up that no one seems to be making it better for those that have a every reason to be handicapped and to stop those that are impersonating someone that is handicapped.

Ok fine, I still suggest my first suggestion, as well as better enforcement and stiffer penalties for parking in a handicapped stall.

Agreed, the penalty for parking in a handicap space without a placard should be definitely steep. Also there should be a requirement so that a doctor from the state has to look over you (and your recent medical records) and talk to your primary doctor and decide how long a permit should be issued to you, and what type...Oh and the permits should definitely be only available if you get a doctor's recommendation first.

Haa~, reminds me how my last school had one and it was always used. Since it is a special school however, it is at least somewhat warranted.
I don't personally look at the disabled section of car parks but these days simple laziness can be diagnosed as a medical condition. Silly, but that's what happens when the law overrides common sense.

My dad also has one of those badges allowing him to park in disabled spots, but on his weekly shop- the only outing he really goes on- it's hard to find a space near the front of the store nowadays. He gets pretty angry when he sees people who can otherwise walk perfectly fine getting into the spots that he's trying to get into, and I can understand why.

They do seem to be giving out the disability benefits to just about anyone nowadays. It's true that the person may have underlying problems that we can't see, but in a small town, he knows many of the people who have been given the badges and doesn't agree with it, probably because it took years of effort to get his.

And I also agree that the morbidly obese shouldn't be given these as quickly as they are. Less walking equals more weight, it's not really encouraging them to stay healthy and exercise. Even if they have problems with their joints because of the weight, it's more often than not self inflicted. :|

That's something I can agree with and my dad is the same too. It took him years to finally gewt disabled plates and no it seems like everyone is either getting the badges or the plates.

just like how driving is a privilege, parking is also a privilege. People really abuse these parking spots. I don't see it as much as everyone else, but I wholeheartedly agree with everyone else.

guess people are just that coldhearted towards everyone else :\

I think in LA, the ticket for parking in a handicapped spot without a plat or permit comes out to be quite costly

I HATE when people are like that. They're using up spots that other people actually need. Sometimes they even use old ones just because they're too lazy to get off their butts and walk farther.

My dad used to be handicapped. He had a horrible accident and for years, he would pass out if he walked more than necessary. So of course, he used it. Keep in mind my dad is only 45 now. He will go take long jogs and stay in shape, but he refuses to walk a little farther in the parking lot. And I saw a very old, frail woman who looked pretty sick. Her daughter was driving her, and you could tell that she was about to pull into there. But then my dad swooped in there, forcing them to go find another parking spot. They ended up on the other side of the parking lot, in the back. Things like that really get me mad. My dad just uses his old handicap "ticket"!

    Welcome to Britain.

You can get a handicap permit for having many kinds of disabilities. I can get one for my Dyspraxia because it means my coordination is atrocious and i'd have real issues using some of the city parking spaces. It needs to be taken into account that people don't need physical disabilities to require disabled parking.

One: No parking lot if five miles.

Anyway, I don't see that too much where I am, but that is a pretty dickish thing to do. :/ Luckily (never thought I'd say that) the police in my town are very bored and in need of money, so if anyone here tries to cheat into a disabled spot, they'd get ticketed very quickly.

Not really. I mean it's usually if someone is though. I mean that's like me getting on because I'm developmentally disabled. o_o I mean sure, if you're going to the mall or something and you need to be able to park closer because you might have a hard time with finding your way (Most mental/developmental disabilities have something like that.) They should be allowed to use them on those conditions.

It just depends on severity and the current disability you have. Here, I wouldn't be able get one just because I'm autistic. It doesn't work that way, I'd have to have a physical handicap.

I can't see how Autism would warrant a permit.

You must've misinterpreted what i was saying. People with severe coordination and perception difficulties can't use regular parking, the spaces are often too small and they run a huge risk of damaging someone elses car or person. My original point was to not judge a book by its cover, just because someone doesnt appear to have any physical difficulties doesnt mean they're unfit for disabled parking.

I know that. It's just hard to really know if they actually are disabled. It's more the fault of the ones that aren't, who park their without plates or badges just because they think they can park wherever they want.

You can't really do anything about the ones that are using them for hidden disabilities. If they have them then, maybe they are but you would never know unless you actually felt willing enough to ask.

It really needs to be looked upon because people are using these spots without any isnignia or plate and it's making it harder for those that really do need them.
