Well, I am ashamed to admit it, but I use Pokesav to create my Pokemon that I use for competitive battling. (I only do it because I don't have time to EV train them, but I want to do competitive battling. :l) However, all of their stats are legit, as are the EV's. (Not one stat over the max, nor the EV's over 252 each, and the grand total of the EV's is ALWAYS 508. Never more.) But I do enjoy Wi-fi battling. Particularly PBR, which makes your Pokemon bad eggs if stuff is unlegit. :P Well, regardless of all that stuff, my Pokesav Pokemon are legit other than the fact that they were made by Pokesav. :P

Oh, and I'd use Shoddy Battle, (Since I actually feel guilty about the "artificial" Pokemon. :l) but it never seems to load for some reason. I've tried updating Java and stuff, but it likes to be stupid and STILL not work.

I really enjoy competitive pokemon as a whole really. I also kind of like going to smogon because the community is actually pretty accpeting if you have decent social skills, or rather, use those skills on the internet well, because Smogon is a place where actual stuff goes down, so a lot of their rules are stricter to keep that mindset I suppose you could say. Just to be fair, at one point a few years back, there was quiet a lot of elitism on Smogon but if you look around more, you can see they have several areas that help you "mingle" with what I would consider a tight nit family sort of deal. I suppose it's "elitist" in that they don't want people who can't understand the air of the community, just as here at PC, someone who's arrogant and elitist probably wouldn't feel too at home here on PC; but I digress...

The thing I don't get about the hate for competitive pokemon (and sorry to the OP for semi-bashing his opinion) is that nobody is forcing them to EV train, learn to RNG, and use every top OU pokemon on their team yet they still complain that it should be removed or ignored. If the developers didn't want a deeper competitive nature to pokemon, then they could have kept the R/B/Y system of Special Attack and Defense being one stat, critical hits being calculated by speed, no EVs, nerfed IV system, and only 151 critters. The game would still have a competitive nature to it and it does even at casual play levels. If you don't like competitive, just don't play it that way. I don't recall in my 3 years of posting on various Pokemon forums a situation where a competitive buff mocked someone because they simply aren't interested in competitive so that mindset should be shared by both ends.

Last note, Pokemon is hardly the only game subject to this sort of complaint. If you've ever played a fighting game as a button masher you might be having fun, but if you get upset just because someone who knows the tricks of the game beats you flat out then you're not being very honest with yourself.

    I love competetive battling.
I don't mind tier lists, either.
The only thing I don't like are the clauses (sleep mainly)

I think this goes in the Strategies and Movesets forum since it is about competitive battling. Also, the original last poll option is not reall appropriate for this forum so I edited it. Please watch out for your word choice next time.

My opinion is it's the only thing keeping me involved with pokemon...I also want the 5th generation to stir up this horrible platinum metagame. =(

If you went to smogon, you have probably found out that they are illogical [insert bad word here]holes.
Compeditive battling makes pokemon a game of strategy, not WHO HAS THE BEST POKEYMAN.

Anyways, competitive is pretty much the only reason I even bother with Pokemon (Minus HGSS, the nostalgia was too much to resist XD), as it is at heart a complex strategy game, which I do enjoy.

If you are not a competitive battler and you don't like smogon, I can understand that for the most part. If you are, it makes no sense. They make the tiers and ban broken pokemon. Otherwise we would have Mewtwo and Tickle Wobb in OU and it would be a clustermuck. Yes, some users there are jerks and some users there are nice. If you got picked on you probably made a bad post or said something stupid or "attacked" a respected member of their community (don't do that). There are two things you must realise everytime you go to smogon.

Rule 1: Its the internet, people are going to attack and they don't know you or have to see you so they can say whatever they want, don't take it to heart, if you do you are doing it wrong and you should unplug your internet connection.

Rule 2: It is a pokemon site first and foremost, but chaos (the guy who made it) also allows trolling because otherwise it would be mundane. If you got trolled and got angry, see rule 1.

I write this as a smogonite and as a PCer. I joined PC first and joined smogon ~1 month later. I got trolled. I got picked on. I had to deal with CK. It wasn't all that bad. If you wish to stop that then: make some logical posts, integrate yourself into the society via chatting on IRC, chat on their shoddybattle server, talk to members on the website via VMs/PMs. I made all those mistakes I mentioned when I first joined, and I turned out just fine. I started talking with people and posting and such. Its really not that hard.

Fun Fact (just for lolz): SpecsChomp Draco Meteor on max HP/min SDef Suicune: 426 Atk vs 266 Def & 404 HP (140 Base Power): 241 - 285 (59.65% - 70.54%)

In all seriousness, I can already see where this is going. This thread isn't "debate the content of the character of Smogon members," this is the "what do you think about competitive battling" thread. Already I've seen regulars and other users alike turning this thread into something it should not be. Expect retribution if you do not abide by this basic guideline >_>

I did mention that the community there was somewhat rude to members; it's somewhat relevant. And no, I haven't said anything "stupid" the time I was there, or attacked a reg/respected member. I just didn't like how they treated some people in there. I don't want to be associated with such people due to the attitudes giving me a bad vibe.
    Also, I know it was for the lolz about the SpecsChomp thing, but due to the fact I'm bad with numbers [I don't do EVs/IVs and similar things because of it] and how it sounds so overly-complicated with a gazillion acronyms and terms that I avoid it. It's not only the people, it's because it's just plain freaking hard personally. >_<;

I'm so dumb for not getting it, I guess.

I like the idea of competitive battling because I have always loved strategy games and the whole deal with the invisible IVs, EV training, and different movesets - both learned and taught to and tutored to or passed down to the egg - gives Pokemon battling a new angle to approach things at.

What I don't/won't like is repetition - people spamming the same Pokemon, movesets, and techniques over and over and over again.

I used to be a big fan of the old fighter games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and Soul Calibur and part of the fun, in my opinion, was found in working with the different characters and their unique moves and abilities.

On the other hand, I had a friend who kept using certain characters and certain characters only and would always, always, ALWAYS go through (or try to go through) a classic series of moves. It got boring playing against him really quick as it didn't take long to predict everything because he never really changed anything.

In the case of Pokemon, I don't fully agree with the various clauses being implemented in competitive battling (sleep once, frozen once, etc), but that's because I see positives and negatives in all of the different Pokemon and I see the different abilities and movesets as being reflective of the Trainer's preference for strategy.

Sleep, for example, has a 30ish% chance of missing last I looked while a major hard hitter who is both IV and EV and item-beefed up is using a move that has a 100% accuracy rate could potentially OHKO someone in one hit, guaranteed.

Furthermore, the one who can do the Hypnosis more or less has a higher chance of being OHKOed than a more physically beefy type.

To me, such an ability is offset by a lack in physical constitution and physical strength.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

    You're not dumb at all.

I consider myself 'good with numbers' and I still have problems trying to figure out how everything works into the grand scheme of the end statistics.

People's perception of "fun" is different. I personally find winning fun, I use whatever I need to use to win.

I love competitive battling. It gives me a reason to grind those precious EVs into my pokemon, and to see how I go against other people!

Also clauses are there for a reason. Fun isnt it when Breloom Spores your whole team ? ^_^

Uh no, that is horrible logic. Thats like saying "oh you you got shot because you let it happen" like you can prevent it lol ?

Please explain to me then how you stop sleep inducers with no sleep clause good sir ? Every single member of your team is getting slept, no questions asked if its a well played Spore or Hypnosis alike. I don't think you realize how deadly that is, Sleep is basically a ko as it disables a Pokemon totally. Dont bring up ass abilities like vital spirit, every single user of that ability gets wasted by Brelooms/stuff like Gengars STAB/secondary moves. Putting Lum and Chesto Berry on everything is also a dumb reason so dont bring that up because i mean ill just Sleep you again and it wastes item slots that can be put to much better use. Rest Talk on everything ? Yeah sure but stalling with those just asks for crits and getting worn down due to the fact you cant stop every sleep inducer with rest talkers, there are just too many inducers to cover youd have to dedicate nearly all 6 slots just to cover sleep inducers or risk getting KO'd be super effective moves they carry.

    A. It centralizes the game around trying to sleep and trying to stop it.
    B. No sleep clause adds nothing positive to the game. A balanced game is what people want and what smogon and every other competitive battling site strives to achieve, taking away sleep clause doesn't contribute to this.

Lastly, accuracy of Hypnosis is a moot point. 60% chance to take out/disable a team member totally? Yes please. (Just to clarify you CAN sleep more than one time during a match just the Pokemon has to wake up or be ko'd before you can sleep something again aka one poke at a time)

"Well jee i wonder why smogon members pick on people" lol ~___~

"I don't calculate stat values, I don't breed my way to perfection, and I don't care about natures. I catch my Pokemon the way they are, and treat them like individuals instead of brainless drones. If you use this philosophy, copy & paste this into your signature"

This makes me kinda sad, because I love my Pokemon. :c
Just because people found another way to enjoy Pokemon games doesn't mean they're heartless people xD I think competitive battling is cool, but I hate the amount of hacking that goes on

Yes they may be enjoying the games, however they simply cast aside any pokemon that does not have the right natures or IVs. I used to breed for natures for a short time, however I found that it took the fun out of the game for me and stopped with the whole EVing thing...
