  • At first, I was not too fond of the names, and thought it was fake. When it started getting farther, Anime and this thread, I began to worry. It was real. Sure, most have gotten used to the names, but even if it's fine now that all of us are settled with it, how the heck is Pokemon going to name Generation 6 if they went as low to name Gen 5 Black and White?

*What do you think of the names?
*What are they going to title Gen 6?

And has anyone else noticed B & W is the only one that includes a "Black" skinned character whatsoever (Aloe.) Brock was tan, Iris is tan, etc.

  • Far from it actually. Black and White are reboots of all the games before them. So, it only makes sense for them to go back to their old roots and title the games according to color like they first did with Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow. Even so, I believe a lot of fans anticipated a Black and White version many times before. As far as Generation VI goes, it all depends on what they decide to focus those games on. They can pick back up with the gems and stones, continue with colors, or try something new; you never can tell.

It's true, Black and White are the first to introduce Black characters such as Aloe. However, take into consideration that these games are not based upon any area in Japan, but New York. To find a Black person in Japan is unlikely compared to finding one in New York.

What? Black and White are great, simplistic names. I think they're much better than Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, actually...

Purrloin? What is "loin" even in there?

Liepard? Makes me think of Leotards.

Basically, these are the worst generation names yet.

  • I'm rather fond of the new names, actually. Black and White just feel.......right somehow. As for the 6th Gen games, let's leave that for later, shall we?:D

Just a quick notice for those who might get confused with the thread topic, this discussion won't be to discuss the English names in the games, but to give your opinion on the titles of Gen V itself; Black and White.

I actually don't mind the Black & White titles for these games. They seem simple, yes, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them. I don't think it means they're running out of ideas, I think they intended to name it Black & White and keep it simple since it's a reboot. As for Gen 6, I don't know how they'll title those games but that's okay. I'll worry about it then. ;D

I wouldn't be too quick to judge. Most of the names have something allude to either its origin, habits, or personality. Purloin means too steal, and if you and and extra R it is Purrloin which they are probably in implying with the typing and moves like Snatch that it is a pokemon that steals objects.

I have personally never had problems with the names but the designs of the pokemon.

What do you think of the names?
Like I said earlier they is usually a rhyme to reason why the pokemon is named what it is. So I am not going to knock a poke because of its name but its overall appearance, abilities, moveset and so forth.

What are they going to title Gen 6?
Too far ahead when we are trying to focus on the now which is Black and White. But anyways the generic rock, stone, color.

  • I like the titles Black and White they are simple and I'm hoping the third version's title is as simple as those two to keep with the simple names of this gen :)
As for gen VI...well they still tons of Metals and Stones, trust me I know a lot of stones GF has yet to use...Amethyst,Garnet, Peridot, Zircon, Obsidian, and Aquamarine to name a few...

  • As for the game titles I love them. They got the Yin and Yang aspect with Reshiram and Zekrom I thought was brilliant imo. And Black and White indicate base colors, as if we are going back too the basics. Which is why people often say this is a reboot.

Just wondering exactly what you mean by this sentence?

  • Black and White... frankly, I was expecting these names for a long time. A simple way to get a name for a few games. I'm not disappointed, actually. Even though, the names are just the simple colors, I believe they could represent many things. For example, in this game it refers to Yin and Yang. It could be the struggle between evil and good, and many other things. I think the names partly make people (at least me) think about what those names could mean with many possibilities.

For Gen VI and other Gens, I want something other than crystals, gems, and colors. Sure, i's breaking their pattern. But that's what we need. Change.

I began to worry that they were going through with B & W. At first, I hated those names. I'm used to them and don't mind them as much as I used to, but I do think that pokemon was desperate at this point.

  • I don't think they were desperate as they have dozens of names they could have picked from...but then Again DPP were the Ultimate hardness, Ultimate smoothness and Ultimate precious metal...so they had to go down from there...

  • I think that Black and White indicate that they are going further than reboot, as they are shades, lower down than primary colours. Black absorbs all colours, White reflects them.

Red, Blue and Yellow (or Green) were the first three/four games. All of them in generation one, all of them starting off Pokemon. After them, besides in remakes, no other colours for names have been used, until now. B/W is considered to be a restart, so it makes sense that they go back to their naming routes. Plus, Ying and Yang suits the games perfectly, so really it makes sense. I don't think the next generation will have names of colours anyway and instead follow the pattern of G/S/C, repeating the past all over again. Just watch!

  • Black and White are actually GameFreak's way to let Pokemon go back to their original roots (naming games after colors). Like some people said earlier, there's a reason why they're called "Black and White."

  • Black and White, to me, seem most tradition for a Pokemon game. Taking consideration in Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow, it puzzles me why it wasn't thought up sooner. Colors to... gems, then right back to colors again? What next? I think after Gen V, I won't want to see anymore Pokemon or regions being made.

    I think so too ;)
Oh yeah some consider Gold and Silver colors too so maybe the games of next gen could be Colors/Metals too like Cobalt ;)...but then again all the games (except DP) can be considered colors just different shades...
