Honestly, as soon as a heard it was astrology, like Feign, I closed out. Astrology isn't a real science and some people would call all the things that people who believe in it do total garbage, and that's what it is. I have no worry about this, and I will anticipate it and wait until we prove everyone wrong.
Also, the moon effects tides, not tsunamis >____>

Well, the sun and the moon both of a gravitational affect on the tides and the Earth itself.

Both are so weak that they really do nothing regarding anything other than water. The moon being closer for a small amount of time won't change anything. The tides might get a centimeter higher. Oh no.

However, in Earth's early history, the Moon was so close that the tides were tsunamis. But as time goes on, the Moon gets further away.

Eventually, we will no longer have a moon. That will happen in..I don't remember the numbers, but I know the sun will become a red-giant and swallow the inner solar system before it is supposed to happen. So, no worries there!

This is quite unfortunate, because I do not want to die before getting my SAT results back. :(

Honestly when I read the title I thought this was about the asteroid that was supposed to approach us sometime in the future, with some kind of ridiculously upped estimate on its immanence. Instead it's an article that cites an astrologer.

    Rather disappointing, Livewire. =[

I meant what Bela said about the astoroid.
    This is why quotes exist.

Oh joy, I just got over the 2012 hysteria, and now this pops up. Great, I have exactly six days to live -____"

No, this is not going to happen. We didn't die in 2000, so we're not going to die on the 19th. I swear, people come up with the most stupidest things ever, scaring people like this..

I was actually quite shocked by this article, than realised I misread astrology/astrologer/whatever it was as astronomy/astronomer. Yeah, astrology is a mythical science. If you can call it a science. So no, I don't think this "supermoon" will have any effect.

This is how the story started.

Richard Nolle was never known and just sat there at his desk not knowing what to do. He was bored and then turned on his computer. Then the computer displayed a message.

"The moon is closer to Earth then in the last 18 years."

    Nolle gasped.

"I want the public to know me." said Nolle.

"I'll tell the public that the moon will create earthquakes and volcanoes more frequently then before."

"Then everybody will thank me that I told them that the world will end soon. Then they will do whatever they wanted to do in their life."

    "Okay. I'll tell MSN."

    That's how this started.

That's a horrible reason to be against it. Y2K and this have nothing in common. Using "We don't get hit by a giant planet that swooped in from no where" would be a better excuse to refute this than Y2K.

Use good examples, like the fact that astrology is just bullcrap. The fact that this happened 18 years ago and we are still here. But not Y2K because Y2K has nothing to do with this.

NASA Scientist Explains Science Behind Supermoon

tl;dr version - There is no science behind it.

Take a look at Japan's Earthquake and Tsunami and whirlpools... o_O

Oh my god! An earthquake and tsunami in a place that gets the most of both out of anywhere else on the planet! What a strange thing! -_-

There have been 3 such supermoons in the last decade (we average ~2 a decade). This has been occurring for the last 4.5 billion years (assuming that the current theory of lunar formation is correct). That means that there have been approximately 900 million supermoons. Recorded history dates back ~5000 years, meaning that there have been about 1000 such moons since the birth of human civilization. It should also be noted that the moon is slowly (~3.8 cm/year) moving away from the earth, so the previous supermoons were closer and presumably more "super" than this one will be. All evidence points to there being no connection between the perigee of the moon and any natural disasters.
