I finally have the Mineral Badge! Here's how my winning battle with jasmine went:
The two magmemites weren't too hard, but steelix was. That thing is a game breaker if you don't have anything special-type and super effective. But with super fang and some defense drops from rock smash, I managed to bead the steelix - even though she healed it to full health. Twice. I'm not going to teach rock smash - even though it's a great move, my pokemon already have above-average moves.

    So, my team is:

    Raticate level 34
    Rock Smash
    Crunch
    Strength
    Super Fang
One of the best movesets for raticate that I've ever used. Oh wait, I haven't used raticate in a team before this challenge. Still, crazy good attack and defense.

    Togetic Level 32
    Fly
    Yawn
    Extrasensory
    Shadow Ball
Fly hasen't been used in battle yet, but still. Yawn was a huge help against Steelix - it opened the window for raticate to come in.

    Miltank Level 31
    Return
    Rollout
    Zen Headbutt
    Milk Drink
Crazy HP and Defense, definitely a physical tank. If it weren't weak against fighting, it would be my main pokemon against Bruno.

A great overall team so far, and I'm having lots of fun!

I started a Fighting Monotype Challenge on Firered, because I get bored waaaaay too fast.

    Current Monotypes:

    Ultimate Ground:
Done with Leafgreen and Soulsilver; before the 8th Gym in Emerald

    Ultimate Water:
    Before 4th Gym on Leafgreen

    Fighting (Firered):
    Just defeated Surge.

Fortunately, I'm doing the Fighting Challenge on Firered with an Emulator, so I can finally post screenshots! Yay!

    Progress so far:
    - named myself Loki and Rival Bobo
    - did the usual stuff
    - caught two Mankey on Route 22 (Sodom and Gommorra)
    - trained them to Lvl 9 and defeated Bobo
    - smashed through Viridian Forest
    - murdered Brock
    Spoiler:

    - raged on and defeated countless trainers (and Bobo)
    - Defeated Misty
    Spoiler:

    - on we rage, thrashed SS Anne, broke Bobo's Pokémon in half and rubbed the back of an old, sick man (reminds me of civil service in the retirement home (which I did for 9 months (which is required in Austria (either that or 6 months crawling through mud during military training)))
    - challenged Surge and tore him apart
    Spoiler:

    - did not battle trainers east of Vermilion so I can train other Pokémon there
    - reached Rock Tunnel and caught a Machop
    - now going through Rock Tunnel

    The Team:

    Spoiler:

I know the natures aren't perfect, but I find calm and relaxed for Primeapes rather hilarious.

Some questions for the more experienced Monotypers:
Is Machop worth keeping? I can't trade so he will remain a Machoke forever.
How can I take on Sabrina? Any way I turn she will probably kill me. I could try it with Thief but non-STAB 40 damage (influenced by Special Attack on top of that) will probably not get me far.
I'm guessing Hitmonchan is better for versatility, but I like Hitmonlee more. Which is better?
For the fifth member I would have taken Quappo. Anyone have experience with the big blue guy?

    Thanks for reading,
    Cheers,
    Peter

OK, I have a question. Due to the rarity of dragon pokemon in any game, can I trade a dratini and bagon from fire red at the start of emerald, because trading is the only way to get dratini, as far as I know, and Bagon isn't until halfway or so.

You can trade in 1 low leveled Pokemon, that is available in your game if your type is: Ice, Dragon, Ghost, Steel (2. and 5. gen) and Dark (in 2. and 4. gen)

Note: You can get Altaria, Flygon, and Salamence, so you wouldn't need Dratini even if you were allowed.

Can someone answer me: Can the traded in Pokemon be fx a Pearl exclusive, if the challenge is on fx Diamond?

  • Update for Ultimate Monotype Challenge (Dragon).

    Update #3 on Sapphire.

    • Surfed the water routes and taught Ice Beam to Skye.
    • Skye and Dragonfly both evolved (Altaria, Vibrava) on the way to Fortree.
    • Beat May and taught Fly to Skye.
    • Beat Winona pretty easily.
    • Went to Lilycove City and beat May again.
    • Beat Mt. Pyre and the Hideout.
    • Surfed to Mossdeep and beat Tate and Liza.
    • Went underwater and beat Maxie, who then freed Kyogre.
    • Got to Sootopolis and killed Kyogre, then went back out to train on the water.
    • On my way to Pacifidlog Town, Menace finally got to L49 and learned Dragon Claw, then evolved into Shelgon.
    • Dragonfly evolved into Flygon as well.
    • Went back to Sootopolis and challenged Wallace. I had to reset a few times because of Ice moves.
    • Went to Meteor Falls and taught Dragon Claw to Skye and Iron Tail to Dragonfly.
    • Bought Flamethrower in the Game Corner and taught it to Menace.
    • Saved in Mossdeep City.

  • So, I haven't updated in ages, but I think I'm still on the list - so here's an update :D I'm still doing normal and I'm now on silver after having to restart for the second FREAKING time due to a catastrophic hard drive failure >.>

    - Started out and named myself Silver. Got Totodile to be a surfing HM slave and travelled quickly. Met my rival, named him Gold and headed to Violet city.
    - The gym turned out to be harder than I thought. The first trainer pwned me, so I went back to train.
    - Tried the gym again. Died to the second trainer this time >.>
    - Grinded until Hoothoot and Sentret fainted. They got only one level each, but that means Peck and Quick Attack :D
    - Tried the gym one more time and it turned out that the trainers were tougher than the gym leader. Falkner went down easy and I travelled to Union cave with my newly obtained Togepi.
    - Somehow took two tries getting through. I blame unlucky Metronomes vs. Geodudes.
    - Reached Azalea Town and cleared Slowpoke Well with ease. Kurt was a great help.
    - Bugsy's gym went down fast to Hoothoot's Peck, but Sentret's Quick Attack was needed to finish off his Beedrill. As a result, I now have a Furret :D
    - Grabbed the Headbutt TM in Ilex Forest and taught it to Togepi so it can have a reliable attack. Furret also now has Cut and Togepi Flash.
    - Reached Goldenrod. Here comes Whitney...
    - Lost four times in a row and headed to the underground to grind.
    - FINALLY beat her after taking a break to gamble away my pitiful savings.
    - Headed up Route 35 for some training. Hoothoot evolved!
    - Destroyed Sudowoodo and continued north.
    - Quickly reached Ecruteak and started to work my way through the Kimono Girls...not like that.

And that's where I quit for now. I'll pick it up later, but here's the current team:

    Togepi Lv.21
    Spr_2s_175.png

    - Headbutt
    - Rock Smash
    - Metronome
    - Flash

    Noctowl Lv. 21

    - Tackle
    - Hypnosis
    - Foresight
    - Peck

    Furret Lv.22
    Spr_2s_162.png

    - Fury Swipes
    - Defense Curl
    - Quick Attack
    - Cut

Totodile Lv.8 (HM slave once I get Surf)

  • Just to clarify, in case I don't post in the next couple of days:

My emulator isn't working. (I tried again today, all I literally achieved was to Rock Smash the rocks on route 111, because the emulator began to cause lag on my entire laptop.)

I'm going to try downloading it again tommorrow.

May sound a bit unrealistic at this point, and unfortunately I have no way to prove it...

  • Update for Ultimate Monotype Challenge (Dragon).

    Final Update (#4) on Sapphire.

    • Surfed to Victory Road and made it through. Menace evolved into Salamence and learned Fly.
    • After beating Wally, I bought Fire Blast from the Dept. Store and taught it to Skye.
    • I had 24 Rare Candies (Pickup is totally awesome) so everyone got to L60.
    • Took on the Elite Four - Glacia was a major pain but I eventually made it through thanks to a Blizzard miss. The rest were easy.
    • Steven was easy as well with all the anti-Steel moves I had.

That's how I beat her anyway, or you could get yourself a Houndour on the route east of Celadon and train it up to beat her, being dark type and all.

Update for my own firetype challenge...
Let's see... Whooped Erika obviously, then Misty, then fixed the power plant, then caught Snorlax (cause I wanted it), then beat Brock, and took a break on my way to Fuchsia City.

  • EXTREMELY small update, but, meh:
    -Got to Pewter City
    -Trained Sparky to lvl12
    -headed straight to the gym
-was horrified at the difficulty of the gym trainer (Forgot Tail Whip instead of growl by mistake, just 'cuz I was mashing the A button without paying attention at the end of battle)
    -Sparky leveled up
-went to heal because I had 2 Quick Attack's left
    -Challenged Brock (meep):
I didn't pay attention to Brock's moves, just mine, but he probably just spammed Tackle
    So, me:
    Sparky V Geodude
    Growl x5
    potion
    Growl
    Quick attack x10
So Geodude was on half health(ish), and, to my amazement:
Quick attack x5. ALL CRITS! I mean, HOW ON EARTH! Has anyone actually got 5 crits in a row before?
    Anyway:
    Sparky V Onix
    Growl x4
    potion
    Growl x2
    Quick attack x13
Onix was on low health, but I didn't have enough Quick attacks to finish it. I was gonna lose after all those crits. But THEN:
    Sparky used Quick attack
    Onix used Tackle
Sparky used Quick attack. A CRITICAL HIT! Booyah!
    So... wow

    Now heading to Mt Moon!

    Team:
    Sparky lvl15(Pikachu)
    -T-Shock
    -Quick Attack
    -Double team
    -T-Wave

    And useless Charmander named Slaved

I sorta fell sorry for Brock. I bet he felt rejected when I was partying around the room to offer sacrifices for the Gods of Crits and Quick Attack.

EDIT: Lol, just got another 2 crit Quick attack's on a bug catchers weedle

@AyameHikaru: Try to avoid Sabrina as long as you can and just grind grind grind. At least that's what I did during my Groung Monotype run on Soulsilver.

@Myrrhman: Thanks for answering my questions! And yeah, Quappo is Poliwrath. Man, I'm getting confused. I'm even playing this with an English Firered Rom and I still mix up English and German names XD

Next update will be today, I made a bit of progress last night. Fighting is soooo easy so far, I'm pretty much flying through the game.

Yeah, I looked up the Japanese name, and it didn't match, but then I was like "oh yeah, I can use this brain thing. Which of all the Pokemon is blue, Fighting type, and in Fire Red?

You better slow down, flying is super effective against fighting.

  • Made some decent progress on Gold so far. I'm already near complete with the Rocket Hideout, and I'll take on Pryce this early. Cianwood and Olivine can wait. My next update might be up either a little later, or after school.
