And by this time next month or two, Firefox 27 will be out.

    Fixed it for you. :P

I'm glad they sped up the release schedule both from a versioning and progress point of view. 3.5 and 4 were horrible bloated pieces of crap (but required for progress), whereas 5 and 6 are decidedly less so. If you call it 4.2, people are going to think it's a fixed FF4... which it is, but yeah.

I will admit, 5 and 6 are very snappy.

I want to like Firefox, but it's not quite there yet, for me. Chrome runs so much better on OSX, so considering I have everything synced between the browsers on each, I'm staying with Chrome on the desktop, too.

Well Archer, you can stick with Chrome. I'm not forcing you.:)

The official release has been added to the Downloads section! For those of you who still want the early release, I kept it there.

Maybe if Firefox didn't become more unstable with each new release, people would welcome its new versions... I used to be a die-hard Firefoxfreak until 4 became unbearably slow and crash-prone, and now I'm on Safari, which I've had to shut down about one time, ever.

And you say they're already on v6..??

Yes. 7 next month. But, I have tested Firefox 6.0. (I'm using it right now.) It is VERY fast compared to Firefox 4.

The Windows, Mac, & Linux download links have been added to the first post!

Just updated to 6. I haven't noticed to much of a difference except for the fact that it's faster. Is the Add-on manager loading extremely slowly for anyone else?

It is a little slower than Firefox 4 and 5, but to me that's the only bad thing about Firefox 6.0.

Some CSS has been added to the first post!

They are using a quick version change system ala Chrome. Version 5 was just a bugfix for all the stability errors you mentioned, version 6 actually includes real improvements, and version 7 (which should go into Beta channel soon, curently in the Aurora-Alpha version) will reduce the memory usage by 50%- an insane speed improvement.

Whoa! I didn't know that! Since when exactly does version 7 come out?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_6#Future_releases

"As of July 2011, work for versions 6, 7 and 8 is in progress with a scheduled release to the release, Beta (7) and Aurora (8) channels of the respective versions on August 16, 2011. Firefox 7 is scheduled to be released on September 27, 2011. Firefox 8 is scheduled to be released on November 8, 2011."

The Aurora version is quite stable and, honestly, it's worth using if you want the latest updates as soon as possible.

To be honest, it pretty much is fixed.

Yeah, I've used Chrome on OSX, and it's wonderful. It's a lot better on other on Windows as well. I feel as if Mozilla rushed and made Firefox 6 because of the panic of losing their users to Chrome since it is a much better web browser at this point.

That's indeed the main reason why they copied Chrome's monthy small-but-constant update schedule. If it worked for Google, Mozilla also wanted to have a go at it. Wait until Microsoft does it as well sooner than later.

Didn't they say they'd plugged most of the memory leaks in... version 3... and then version 4...?

It's not the memory that's a problem for me. I'm not personally worried until it starts using more than 1GB. It's the CPU drain at idle. It uses 15-20% on my laptop, whereas Chrome and Safari use 0-5%. the problem being that it really detains my battery, because it's the sort of thing you really want to leave open all of the time.

Unfortunately, the PC I'm currently on only has 1 GB of memory, and Chrome is running flawlessly even with a few tabs open. If you go to "about:memory" in Chrome, you can see the memory usage, and it can compare it to other browsers you have other, and I've compared it to Firefox before on my other computer with the same tabs open as Firefox, and Chrome uses far less memory.

If they could come out with some sort of revolutionary new feature to stand out from the competition that'd probably do some serious bolstering to their usershare again.

Albeit, the main problem is that there is a competition now. Myself, and I'm sure a lot of the other people here in their early 20s / late teens switched to Firefox during that dreadful time where the only real alternative was Internet Explorer 6, and Firefox's tabbed browsing support offered a revolution in design and ease of use, and the very flexible extension support which was another clear benefit during the days of IE7's life.

At that point Safari was a PowerPC-only piece of software, Opera was even more obscure than it is now and Google had no business in the web browser department.

Evidently, things have changed a lot since then.
