Search Engines

Out there, we have a variety of search engines, which allow us to look and find various content on the Internet.

One of the most popular, as we all know, is Google, and it has been around for more than a decade and half. Up next, would be Yahoo, which has been around just as long, more or less. After this, comes Aol, Bing, and so forth.

What are our opinion on these search engines, and which would be our most favorite? Why do we like this one so much? Which would we say is our least favorite, and why so? If we were to change anything to make it better, what would it be and how would we go about it?

  • Google. It's just so much better. And, I took the Bing test, and according to Bing, I am a Google person.

  • I use google. I've always used google. Well, I take that back... I did use Bing at one time, but I didn't like it. I've used google for the longest time that I'm used to it. I have sued Yahoo some, but I use google the most.

  • Google all the way. I was raised on using Google, and its simple design back then is what I liked about it. At least Google has no filler on homepage, unlike Yahoo and Bing, which is something I like.

I'm another strictly Google user. I forget that there are other options out there for search engines, but Google works so well I don't need to go anywhere else. It was the first one I used and the one I'll stay with.

And, as Zach pointed out, Google's homepage is so simple. There's no intrusive ads or anything else on the page except for the Google logo and the search box.

You can't go wrong with Google ever.

Duck Duck Go is another great search engine, especially for those privacy freaks out there. Personally, I have nothing to hide - so I just use the former.

    DuckDuckGo.
I'm something of a privacy freak (presumably you wouldn't let that one guy working in the shop sit down and watch you and your family at home, so why should this not also apply to the internet?) - I disagree entirely with off-site tracking (with the exception of said data being anonymised) and so I'll use a search engine that plays to those values.

That aside, it's actually a very good search engine (it really takes the best of everything) and does its job more than sufficiently. Seriously, even if you aren't much of a privacy person, I'd recommend at least giving the ridiculously-named thing a go. I actually prefer it to Google, without even considering the privacy issues.

  • Lately I've been using DuckDuckGo much often because I do care about privacy at times, so non-tracking search engine like DuckDuckGo will do it for me. It has done a pretty good job, but still, I think Google is one of the most accurate search engine so far.

  • I've never had an issue with Google and they continue to add and tweak their services to better provide for us, whether it be Drive, Maps, Images, or the various other services. I love Google. :P

Bing or Google, I don't really care. I tend to end up using the default so long as it's either of the two. If not, I switch it to one of them. Good enough for me!

DuckDuckGo. I originally tried it after seeing an advert reading "Google tracks you, we don't" and I prefer it in all respects now, and only use Google much for reverse image searches (and that's only because Tineye's ToS forbids uploading certain material). DDG's 'bang syntax' has become a convenience I take for granted (whereas on Google one would need to add, for example, site:pokecommunity.com to search a particular site, and with certain domains that sort of format can be a hassle to type). As well as respecting privacy, I get the impression DDG respects the intelligence of the user more. I don't want my searches to be tailored to my apparent interests like Google offers, I want to search the Internet, not my recommended bubble.

  • I tried DuckDuckGo and I really can't say I'm impressed. Everything looks so bland and blank, and the color combinations on the site just don't appeal to me one bit.

  • Google is my baby and I cannot search using anything else. Whenever I try searching things on another computer and Yahoo or Bing come up as the default search engines, I shudder.

That said, definitely going to try out DuckDuckGo. Liking the sleek and simple design!

  • Google is definitely the most convenient and well-known search engine out there, as I mostly don't know any others, other than the ones that scholarly sources provide me with when I have to find research for classes or something. I also have Yahoo searches that I use at some points, but not as often.

  • Google here also. Can't really say which other ones I like the least, because I don't really have any feelings about them because I don't use them at all. Just Google is fine enough for me, it does what I want it to do no problems.

(Although it feels so weird if I do end up using another search engine. Like something just isn't right.)
