torchic is horrible against the last three gym leaders...flying, psychic, water? in fact, besides ground, those are all of it's weaknesses. and ground gets covered by your rival's swampert anyway...but you're right the rival sucks in this game.

mudkip. it's good against the first, third (due to ground), and fourth. it's bad to no gym. torchic is good against the first (due to fighting) and fifth due to fighting, however it's bad to the sixth, seventh, and eighth. mudkip is a lot better.

i sincerely doubt that, but if you did congratulations. in my sapphire i've caught 214 pokemon. i wish i had fr/lg, i could greatly increase that number...
