If you were really dedicated then I guess you could go for 3-4 episodes a day, which would take less than a year to catch up? But obviously that's a lot of time. Maybe just filter through filler episodes and watch those where major events take place, with a few filler sprinkled here and there...

Clemont and Gladion have always been some of my favourite anime characters. But if we're going off of actual help on the journey, then I'd probably say Brock and strangely Iris. Both have unique skills and experiences so... (although part of me wants to say Dawn completely based off of nostalgia.)

Honestly if anything, it'll be like contests in Sinnoh. So many trainers will be challenging them then it's likely that Ash shouldn't become too famous. Definitely hopeful that this anime has the quality of XY behind it though. Fingers crossed!

I completely agree, especially since the newer games have longer openings (with all of S/M feeling like a tutorial :/) I find it harder and harder to replay them as time goes on
