I think this is just a mix of mostly forgettable Pokemon coupled with bad region design. I mean, for starters, there is no need to have so much surf in one game. There isn't. I LOVE the Battle Frontier. It was honestly my favorite part of the game. It restored something to Pokemon I hadn't felt in a long time, challenge. Some of those places were hard. as. balls. and you know what, that's something Pokemon hasn't been in a long long time.

Playing it after a long break, the thing that annoys me is that it had no post-game. Once you beat the E4, that's it. I mean, it's not like that's a MAJOR complaint, seeing as it was, after all, the FIRST generation, but still, playing it after playing even Gen II leaves me feeling somewhat...

I use Chrome, it's fast, stable (for me anyways), and the extensions only enhance the experience.

Tried to solo Gold with a Magikarp... Got to Whitney and then realized "I can't beat her Miltank with a FULL TEAM most times... How will I beat her with just a Magikarp!?!" Ad then gave up... Sad, I know, but I just don't have that sort of patience.
