Annoying main characters

I'm writing a fanfic, and it's my goal to have my main character (who's story is the POV from) start off as an annoying preppy & whiny princessy girl who only sees Pokemon as tools of war.

However, over time I want her character to develop to be more mature, less annoying, and basically learn that Pokemon is more than raising your own ego.

Would that be okay? >_>; I mean, I know how people feel about annoying characters, but will it put off readers to be extremely annoyed with the main character at the beginning?

If you can annoy the piss out of us with this character but then prove to us gradually that she isn't just a mind-numb princess by having her grow and change into someone we can actually like, that's actually the mark of a good writer.

What Valentine said. It takes a good writer to make a character annoying, yet totally change them as the story progresses.
