4th Gen Voltorb Flip: Yay or Nay?

The Johto Game Corner, a staple within the games for years up until the arrival of HG/SS, was replaced with a new feature known as Voltorb Flip in its usual location of Goldenrod City. The minigame was a Picross and Minesweeper-styled game where you select tiles to reveal a set of numbers while avoiding the Voltorb, which will cause you to lose your entire coin payout.

What do you think of Voltorb Flip? Fun? Lame? Tedious? Were you bothered by the fact that you couldn't buy coins here like I was??? :(

On one hand, Voltorb Flip could get seriously annoying when you would come one short of clearing the field and proceed to land on a Voltorb and have your streak wiped back to Level 1. It was time consuming to get coins with it.

But on the other, if there was any reason for me to grudgingly appreciate Voltorb Flip, it's the fact that if you're very patient, you can get really good Pokémon and/or TMs relatively early in the game. That's how I got Flamethrower on my Quilava before I even took on Whitney in my last HG playthrough.

This was much too hard to be considered a game rather than an endurance test. Not a fan.

I love the game, its like a Sudoku, Pokemon style. Also guys, Merry Christmas, here's a gift to you from me, in case you havent seen this one before :)

You can now easily get all the Pokemon and items you need, its a really good program. (not trying to advertise or anything, I just find it to be really useful and reliable).

Anyway, the game itself is fun, and doesnt require too much thinking, and not even that much luck. I preferred it over the slots cos they were pure luck. Downside of this game though is that you cant buy the coins, but with the program I linked you can bypass this problem to a certain extent.

Nay. I wasn't a fan of Voltorb Flip since I never enjoyed what it was based off in the first place. It was a cool idea but not my sort of game. :(

I really sucked at Voltorb Flip, especially given it reminds me how bad I am at Minesweeper which the game is heavily based on and as a result I often lost so many times I gave up.

I actually like the fact Game Corners are no longer a thing due to the crackdown on gambling.

I actually hated Voltorb Flip. Main reason why I hated it is because it is based off of Minesweeper, which I am not good at. I find it inferior to the slots it replaced. I was actually annoyed that the only way to get coins now was to play that game. Because of that game, I have no reason to go to the Goldenrod and Celadon Game Corners any more.

I guess it's fun and irritating when you're in need for coins to get the TMs you need. The game itself is pretty creative and I like it for that fact. But when trying to play well in it ..well it's hard for me at least. So I'm "half-half" with it

I liked this game a lot! It was considerably better than the slot machines which didn't really have any strategy behind them other than to stop the wheels. Having said that, I sucked a Voltorb flip haha. I think the highest round I've ever gotten to was like 4?

It requires more skill and thought than the slot machines, imo, which is just a matter of timing with some luck. While the DPPt ones (sans European Platinum...) were neat with the extra minigame it had, Voltorb Flip was pretty fun and certainly much better than Europe's 'solution' to anti-gambling laws with the Game Corner. If only they gave us such a minigame in ORAS...

Screw this game and the bleedin' hearts that took away my cigarette smoke/cancerous environment. I miss the simplicity of the Slot Machines and the ability to just hit one button and see if I won something. Now I just buy the coins I need instead of wasting my time at all with the Voltorb flip, the hideous mine sweeper clone that doesn't even do it right. If I wanted to play minesweeper, I would play minesweeper but I don't, so I won't. Instead of slot machines then, they should have put in a card game, or some other games based on skill instead of the Voltorb Flip. . .

I hated Voltorb Flip. It was a lot harder than it needed to be. They could've done a better job of replacing the slot machines. But no, they gave us this. It frustrated me to no end. xD But at the same time, it was fun to play every so often. Sometimes I would get enough to get what I wanted. Then I wouldn't play it anymore. xD

Yes, I was. Voltorb Flip? Nay. They broke my heart when they removed the casino Game Corner.

If you know the drill, this game isn't actually that hard, and fun for a change of pace. Sure, I liked the slot machines and was surprised to see this instead, but after a while I've gotten the hang of it. I liked it, because it actually requires you to think about your next move instead of just pushing a button and see what happens... :P

Always used this to get myself a nice Dratini as soon as I got to Goldenrod. :) Never used to play again though after I got one ;)

It was alright once you got the hang of it. Totally bogus that we couldn't buy coins anymore.

I also think it was a bit ridiculous that people threw such a fit about the casino in the first place, but that's beside the point I guess.

I hate Voltorb Flip. It is rare for me to get beyond the second stage. I which they had just either just taken out the gambling center in the EU version or allowed the player to buy coins directly.

I'd rather play a Mass Effect game on Insanity and try to beat it in less than 3 days without dying once than even think about this minigame again. Even if I did get an extra Eevee out of it.

This is the best thing I've ever heard about Voltorb flip. And indeed, I'm sure we have played Mass Effect on insanity instead of this stupid game. But in three days? I'll have to see if I'm up to that task one of these days.

I'm neutral about it, on one hand I like it, but on the other hand, I miss the card flip game.

I want an age based feature that if you are 18 or older you can gamble.
