Depends on how much you want to stretch the definition of "super mode". Battle Maison is the first facility to strictly have this, however PWT had a super mode in having the player fight the Champions. I don't think the Battle Frontier (Gen IV, at least) had a super mode, though I may be wrong on that.
Ah ok I could've sworn other facilities had one.

It was 20. Also didn't every battle facility have a super mode or was that recent?

The Battle Subway had Super Trains that were unlocked after reaching a win streak of 21 in their respective regular train. I'm pretty sure it's the first Tower that had such a system, because I don't remember it in gen 4 and prior.

There was a rumor a long time ago that we have to establish the elite 4 in sun and Moon. So I thought maybe the old champions were coming back for the job. And we'll interview them by battling haha that would've been cool.
This is actually a really cute idea, I like it!

  • The thing that's great about N is that since his whole team idea revolves around catching and releasing Pok?mon, he could have whatever team the developers felt was appropriate or necessary. Heck, he could even have a random team each time (using whatever formula it is they have that generates those teams that perfectly check your own).

This would be really cool! I'd much rather this than N having a static team - this definitely fits who he is as a person and trainer a lot better.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. On the Battle Tree page on the official English site, the Pok?mon League is also mentioned so it makes sense that there's a connection between the Battle Tree and establishing the League.

It's weird how Cynthia and Wally haven't aged.

Yeah that's true. Cynthia's quite a bit older than the player character anyway (from what I thought) so her aging wouldn't be as noticeable, but someone as young as Wally should've aged a bit at least.

  • Wally not aging is rather confusing because according to the timeline, Gen III takes place at the same period as Gen I, so he should've aged into an adult like Red and Blue.

  • I saw a timeline and it seems Sun & Moon take place sometime after ORAS which is confusing when looking at Wally. Idk, maybe they just couldn't be bothered to re-create a model for him considering they had the one from ORAS which is fairly recent.

Wally is a result of: 1. reusing his ORAS model as that would save resources; and 2. proof that ORAS takes place alongside XY and not alongside gen 1+remakes the way that the original RSE do.

Or it's just 1 + the whole Battle Tree is non-canon but I like my idea better so ?(?)?

There's also the possibility that an older Wally would look drastically different from his current form and they don't want to change character's appearances too much. Even though Red is roughly 10 years older in Sun/Moon, it was still easy to recognize him and it's still not a huge leap from his 10/11 year old appearance.

edit: Though come to think of it, they could've just made Wally taller too and that would've been good enough.....

They can use the Photoshop bloat tool on Persian's face to make Alola Persian and call it a day, but they couldn't use the transform tool to stretch Wally and make him a bit taller? For shame.

But maybe this is the entire purpose of the Battle Tree. Wally is on a bloodthirsty rage for contracting "Unaging Ash Syndrome" and the player and Cynthia have to put a stop to him before it's too late.

  • There are a lot of character that don't need to age though xD Champions, Elite Four members and Gym leaders don't need to age, they are all adults (assuming Gym Leaders and Elite 4 members will return). And we don't know if we'll see more protagonists besides Red and its rival Blue.

  • I'm really excited for this! I just HOPE that it is not something like a battle maison that gets REALLY repetitive after FIVE minutes

I honestly think this is really cool, and when I saw Red and Blue at the end of the trailer I got so hyped! It's also pretty cool that they've aged, and as for Wally I thought he looked a little different. Just a teenie bit.

As much as I love the champions and trainers that we've seen at the moment, I hope there are others like Lance, or maybe even Alder or Iris.

Well, the Battle Tree is this gen's Battle Tower. But instead of having some new "Tower Tycoon" at the 21st, 42nd, etc. battle, it's an older NPC (Cynthia, Wally) and if you win they can be your partner in the Multi-Battle mode.

So hopefully the desire to get your favorite available NPC is a strong enough drive to keep the Battle Tree from being as repetitive as past Battle Towers. It's because of this that I think it's pretty crucial that there's a large number of returning characters.

Depends on how large we're expecting here. All previous Champions and maybe some rivals? I'd say that would probably be enough to warrant the Battle Tree to feel less monotonous. It's also why I feel it's more or less important for there to be a mode for something similar to PWT where you face past characters exclusively if you do not wish to fight NPC after NPC.
That's the thing, though. Champions + Rivals only doesn't allow for enough challengers for such a mode. Part of why the PWT worked was because it had all past Gym Leaders, allowing for Type-specific challenges, along with the single-elimination tournament style. The Battle Tower is more of a gauntlet, with the 21st battle being the "grand finale." I don't see why they'd change that number, so if we go by that...

Gen 1's rival was also the champ, but let's add Red in there: 2.
    Gen 2 had 1 rival and 1 champ: 2.
Gen 3 had 2 champions and 1 rival, 2 if you want to be technical on Brendan and May. For the sake of strengthening the numbers: 4.
    Gen 4 had 1 rival and 1 champ: 2.
Gen 5 had 2 champs and 3 rivals... let's go ahead and count N as a champ too for good measure: 6.
Gen 6... if you want to count all the friend characters, 4 rivals, 1 champ: 5.

That totals to exactly 21. So if there was such a mode, where you only fought major NPCs the whole way through... well, there's no room for change, is there? There'd need to be a lot of different characters so each time you begin a challenge, it isn't the same 21 characters as before.

The PWT tournaments were much shorter and contained many many more characters, meaning that essentially no two tournaments were the same regarding who you fought.

If the Battle Tree did include tournaments, they'd have to be just "Rival" and "Champion" tournaments; they couldn't have Type-specific ones as there'd be very very few Type specialists, for instance. Unless each of those Type tournaments used only generic NPCs, of course. But then we've lost what makes this Battle Tower stand out from previous Battle Towers, right?

Of course I don't expect Gym Leaders to be here, as much as I'd like the extra characters, but even just adding some plot-important characters can help up the number of total scoutable opponents while not feeling like it's "asking for too much."

I'm wondering if We get to battle other Playable character like Brendan , May , Ethen , Lucus etc etc.

Well this is certainly something. Curious as to how Wally has somehow managed to avoid aging in all this time, although the likely and boring answer is Game Freak couldn't be bothered to make a new model. Still weird, though.
    Fountain of Youth?

Dexio and Sina both have their own mega rings in this game, so it must be a few years after X and Y. So about 10 years after ORAS. Yeah, Wally should look a lot older. Maybe the theory that he's a ghost has some weight to it.

Obviously they showed Cynthia for long time fans who know and love her, Wally was for the more recent fans, and Red and Blue were for the nostalgic fans that haven't played Pokemon in a while. Here's a list of some other trainers I want to see in the Battle Tree:
    • Lance
    • Steven Stone
    • Alder
    • Iris
    • N
    • Bruno
    • Koga
    • Caitlin
