  • Hey everyone! I'm new to competitive battling, so I'm definitely in need of a little help. I only recently sort of got the hang of IV/EV breeding and training, so I'm still struggling with how to distribute the stats and which moves and abilities to select.

This might get long, so I'll try to ask specific questions for suggestions for each Pokemon. Thank you to ever helps me with this, I appreciate it! Also, feel free to offer any suggestions that I don't necessarily list, I'm also not locked into any particular Pokemon. I made this team already, but I'm fine with doing some do-overs and changing which Pokemon I use.

    1) Miltoic
    Item: Leftovers
    Nature: Bold
    Ability: Marvel Scale

    (58SpAt/250HP/50Def/25SpDef/125Spd)

    Confuse Ray
    Hypnosis
    Aqua Ring
    Scald

    2) Froslass
    Item: Focus Sash
    Nature: Modest
    Ability: Snow Cloak

    (252 Spd/240 SpAt/16 HP)

    Ice Beam
    Thunderbolt
    Shadow Ball
    Destiny Bond

    3) Gardevoir
    Item: Pixie Plate
    Nature: Modest
    Ability: Trace

    (252 Spd/ 240 Sp At/ 16 Def)

    Psychic
    Moonblast
    Energy Ball
    Thunderbolt

    4) Camerupt
    Item: Quick Claw
    Nature: Brave
    Ability: Magma Armor

    (200 SpAt/150At/75 SpDef/ 83SpDef)

    Eruption
    Earthquake
    Flash Cannon
    Fissure

    5) Salamence
    Item: Draco Plate
    Nature: Jolly
    Ability: Intimidate

    (250 At/ 240 Spd/ 18 HP)

    Dragon Claw
    Fly
    Brick Break
    Earthquake

    6) Aggron
    Item: Aggronite
    Nature: Careful
    Ability: Filter (Rock Head)

    (252 At, 100 HP, 100 SpDef, 56 Def)

    Iron Head
    Thunder Wave
    Earthquake
    Shadow Claw

You may have noticed that there is an absence of status and stat effecting moves, and moves like substitute and protect. Like I mentioned, I really am quite new to competitive battling, but I'm very interested in embracing aspects of the game and broadening my movesets to more than just moves that do physical or special attack damage.

    Thanks you! :)

  • There are better bulky Water Pokemon out there than Milotic. It doesn't have much to make itself stand out from others like Slowbro, which has Regenerator to passively heal itself upon leaving battle:
    -Scald
    -Psyshock/Foul Play/Fire Blast/Ice Beam
    -Thunder Wave/Toxic
    -Slack Off
    Nature: Bold
    EVs: 252 HP/232 Def/24 SDef
    Item: Leftovers
    Ability: Regenerator

Froslass is only good as a lead because of its lack of offensive presence. Other than that, Gengar outclasses it in offensive and utility roles:
    -Spikes
    -Taunt
    -Ice Beam
    -Destiny Bond
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SDef/252 Spe
    Item: Focus Sash
    Ability: Cursed Body

    Gengar:
    -Sludge Wave/Sludge Bomb
    -Focus Blast
    -Destiny Bond/Taunt/Substitute
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SDef/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb/Focus Sash/Black Sludge

    or
    -Substitute
    -Shadow Ball
    -Will-o-Wisp
    -Taunt/Sludge Bomb/Sludge Wave/Disable
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 28 HP/148 SAtk/80 SDef/252 Spe
    Item: Black Sludge

    or
    -Hex
    -Taunt
    -Will-o-Wisp
    -Sludge Wave/Sludge Bomb/Substitute
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 8 HP/248 SAtk/252 Spe
    Item: Black Sludge

Gardevoir's Mega Evolution is the sole reason to use it in the first place. Regular Gardevoir is simply mediocre. Non-Mega Psychics Fairies to turn to are below:

    Gothitelle:
    -Psychic/Psyshock
    -Thunderbolt
    -Hidden Power (Fire)/Energy Ball
    -Trick
    Nature: Modest
    EVs: 172 HP/252 SAtk/84 Spe
    Item: Choice Specs
    Ability: Shadow Tag

    Starmie:
    -Scald
    -Rapid Spin
    -Reflect Type
    -Recover
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 248 HP/24 Def/236 Spe
    Item: Leftovers
    Ability: Natural Cure

    or
    -Hydro Pump
    -Psyshock/Thunderbolt
    -Ice Beam
    -Rapid Spin
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SDef/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb
    Ability: Natural Cure

    Latios:
    -Draco Meteor
    -Psyshock
    -Surf/Hidden Power (Fire)/Earthquake
    -Defog/Roost/Recover
    Nature: Timid/Hasty
    EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SDef/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb

    or
    -Draco Meteor
    -Psyshock
    -Defog/Tailwind/Hidden Power (Fire)
    -Trick
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SDef/252 Spe
    Item: Choice Scarf

    Sylveon:
    -Hyper Voice
    -Shadow Ball
    -Psyshock
    -Baton Pass/Hidden Power (Ground/Fire)
    Nature: Modest
    EVs: 244 HP/252 SAtk/12 Spe
    Item: Choice Specs
    Ability: Pixilate

    Azumarill:
    -Waterfall
    -Aqua Jet
    -Play Rough
    -Superpower/Knock Off
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 228 HP/252 Atk/28 Spe (Choice Band) or 16 HP/252 Atk/240 SDef (Assault Vest)
    Item: Choice Band/Assault Vest
    Ability: Huge Power

    or
    -Belly Drum
    -Aqua Jet
    -Play Rough
    -Waterfall/Superpower
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 92 HP/252 Atk/164 Spe
    Item: Sitrus Berry
    Ability: Huge Power

As with Gardevoir, Camerupt's Mega Evolution is why it sees (occasional) use in standard play. Regular Camerupt is terrible because it's slow and frail at the same time, and that's a bad combo. Alternative Fire Pokemon are Heatran and Talonflame:

    Talonflame:
    -Swords Dance
    -Flare Blitz
    -Brave Bird
    -Roost
    Nature: Jolly
    EVs: 88 HP/252 Atk/168 Spe
    Item: Leftovers/Sharp Beak/Sky Plate

    or
    -Flare Blitz
    -Brave Bird
    -U-turn
    -Steel Wing/Roost/Tailwind
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spe
    Item: Choice Band/Sharp Beak/Sky Plate
    Ability: Gale Wings

    or
    -Brave Bird
    -Swords Dance/Will-o-Wisp
    -Taunt
    -Roost
    Nature: Careful
    EVs: 248 HP/8 Def/252 SDef
    Item: Leftovers
    Ability: Gale Wings

    or
    -Swords Dance
    -Flare Blitz
    -Brave Bird
    -Natural Gift
    Nature: Jolly
    EVs: 80 HP/252 Atk/176 Spe
    Item: Liechi Berry/Salac Berry
    Ability: Gale Wings

    Heatran:
    -Lave Plume
    -Toxic
    -Taunt/Roar
    -Stealth Rock/Protect/Earth Power
    Nature: Calm
    EVs: 248 HP/192 SDef/68 Spe
    Item: Leftovers

    or
    -Fire Blast/Lava Plume
    -Stealth Rock
    -Taunt
    -Toxic
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 4 Def/252 SAtk/252 Spe or 248 HP/8 SAtk/252 Spe
    Item: Air Balloon/Leftovers

    or
    -Overheat/Fire Blast
    -Flash Cannon
    -Earth Power/Hidden Power (Ice)
    -Stone Edge/Ancient Power
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 28 HP/4 Def/252 SAtk/228 Spe
    Item: Choice Scarf

    or
    -Magma Storm
    -Earth Power
    -Taunt
    -Toxic
    Nature: Timid
    EVs: 252 SAtk/4 SDef/252 Spe
    Item: Leftovers/Air Balloon

Edit: Salamence was good in OU only because of its Mega Evolution, but its Mega Stone got banned to Ubers, meaning that regular Salamence is still outclassed by other Dragons. A better Dragon Dancer to turn to is Dragonite:
    -Dragon Dance
    -Outrage/Dragon Claw
    -Earthquake/Fire Punch
    -Extreme Speed
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spe
    Item: Lum Berry
    Ability: Multiscale

Though Aggron isn't exactly the best Mega to use out there, it's still quite usable. And maxing out a Pokemon's HP before going for the defenses is a better way to invest in its bulk:
    -Stealth Rock
    -Heavy Slam/Iron Head
    -Thunder Wave/Ice Punch
    -Earthquake/Rock Slide
    Nature: Impish
    EVs: 252 HP/16 Def/240 SDef
    Item: Aggronite
    Ability: Sturdy

    or
    -Rest
    -Sleep Talk
    -Heavy Slam/Iron Head
    -Earthquake/Ice Punch
    Nature: Impish
    EVs: 252 HP/16 Def/240 SDef
    Item: Aggronite
    Ability: Sturdy

  • You'll all have to excuse my ignorance. I was unaware that OR/AS & XY were both options when building a team and that the standard format for competitive battling is doubles. Sorry, again, I'm kinda new at this.

The doubles standard only applies to tournaments hosted by the Pokemon Company.

Many players prefer singles, making it pretty much the standard environment to play in.

  • Oh okay! Hmm, I guess its better to have a team that can do both?

Not exactly. The main difference between doubles and singles is that in the former, the fast pace there makes it rather pointless to have entry hazards, which are rather crucial in singles. In doubles, nearly everything runs Protect/Detect for utility purposes. Helping Hand, Wide Guard, Quick Guard, Follow Me/Rage Powder and Heal Pulse are useless in singles; they're best used in doubles.

  • Oh okay, that's interesting. As far as people I mainly battle with are concerned, it's a pretty even split between ones that use singles and doubles. However, one of my friends plays in pokemon company tournaments and she said she'd take me. So I guess I'm more interested in a doubles team at the moment.
