  • There could be 'pink, floral Pokémon' in just about any region.

In any case, Munna was probably a reference to the dreams of a girl in R/B, probably, for a pink Pokémon with a floral design, and hence is said to eat dreams. The general suggestion might be that they ate their dream, and hence became a pink, flowery elephant. This might have been in part an ironic reflection on the direction of the games actually being towards such designs. However, they were eventually uncertain about whether it ate dreams or nightmares, etc., and hence this kind of thing became highly uncertain and vague. It is also based roughly on an elephant, which might not reflect too well on its dream-eating technique. In any case, while it's a slightly amusing take on the stereotypical girl portrayal in R/B, which they would generally have wanted to avoid after the direction of the series post-Crystal, it's quite partial and doesn't get at much.
