  • Pokemon Amiibo

With NFC built into the New 3DS and an accessory soon to be released to enable Amiibo use on the original models, the door is open for Amiibos to be used in future Pokemon games.

Would you like for Amiibos to be part of the main series games? How could they be utilised?

I'm excited that I'll soon be able to use Amiibos, though a little concerned with the potential expense!

I think it would be cool to have Amiibos in the main series games. Perhaps you could have the Starter Pokemon as Amiibos and choose which one you want by placing it on the connector. I think you would feel extra bonded to it that way. It could also be cool to have Trainer Amiibos which enabled extra customisation and stored all your info and achievements and you could carry that with you to other games so your Pokemon career is forever stored!

  • I still don't even understand the point of Amiibos. I've had it explained to me before, but it just doesn't... make much sense. It's a figure... that you store data on... to... well that's just it, I don't get that part. What data do these characters need stored about them?

Not against it or anything, I just really outright don't understand it in the slightest. So what could they do with it in the Pokemon series...? I honestly have no idea. lol They're an absolute mystery to me.

On one hand they serve as collectable merchandize for both hardcore Nintendo fans, who have one more thing, they can brag aboout, and for those that like a certain character and who'd like to have it on their shelf; also kids can also use them as some sort of playtoy.

On the other hand, their ability to store data allows for access to locked content in Nintendo games, most notably being the newest SSB installation. It's kind of like DLC that can be used in multiple games, but with a physical representaion.

The main problem with Amiibos, though, is that Nintendo didn't market them right, which lead to certain smartasses to buy certain figures in high quantities, taking them out of the market and reselling them at a much larger price, which was not well received by a lot of people. There's also those people who just like to think of them being just some sort of a cash grabbing tool, by Nintendo.

But enough sidetracking...I really don't know, what use the figures could have in the main series, tbh. Creating one amiibo for every Pokemon existing, sounds a little bit too much and using them to unlock stuff ingame, borders to DLC, which is something, GF don't want to build into their games. There would also be a need of the game supporting non-Pokemon amiibos, or else there are going to be a lot of complaints, as well.

I would love the Amiibo feature to be part of Gen 7 games, instead of distributing event Pokémon through gaming stores. Isn't it better to have them the event Pokémon as limited Amiibos? It makes the whole thing special, and memorable as you get to keep the figure. :)

  • I guess the 'display' part is what confuses me the most... there's so many superior display figures of almost -every- character you can get an Ammibo of that you'd be better off getting those instead.

As for the more functional aspects... I guess it's just something that I'd have to experience first hand to fully grasp, but I really don't like the idea very much.

I like the Amiibo idea but I'm not sure how I feel about it being implemented into the main series games. If it was, it would have to not be compulsory as it would give it a bit of a 'freemium' feel to it =/

The idea of it being used for events is a nifty one though. However, they'd have to limit the models to one per person to prevent them being bought in bulk and sold at insane prices, and also still offer just the codes for free for those who don't really want to pay for a one-off legend you can't even use in tournaments.

The idea could be a good one if done right, but Pokemon doesn't really need to jump on the Skylanders bandwagon imo. I mean, imagine 700+ figures to collect?! XD

  • Yeah I don't think one for each Pokemon is a good idea, who has the space for them all let alone the money! They could do cards like the Animal Crossing game that's coming out. I definitely think it would be nifty to have your Starter as an Amiibo though :)

  • I remember reading something about Nintendo wanting to make Amiibo for more Pokemon, and not just those in Smash Bros. It could happen due to the outstanding success. As far as Gen 7 compatibility, I wouldn't really want that. I don't own Amiibo and I am not really interested in them tbh lol.

  • I read that all the Pokemon Amiibo currently released will be compatible with Super Mario Maker when it comes out. That's good to know that one figure can be used in multiple games, obviously less expensive and builds more of an attachment!

  • I'd like to see possibly Amiibo's for Legendary Pokemon. Maybe a pre-order bonus? It's still quite hard to get a handful of event Pokemon. Especially Mew ironicly :S

  • Quite frankly, I just want Nintendo to drop Amiibos entirely. So no, keep it out of Pokémon.

  • I think it'd be pretty cool if there was amiibo support for the future Pokemon games and allowed usage of all Pokemon amiibo (or even just all amiibo in general, not just Pokemon). I don't think they'll make amiibo for all 721+ Pokemon, but I think it'd be pretty neat if they made amiibo for the starters and legends. That wouldn't be overboard, and people could still grab the ones they want. It should definitely be an optional feature though in case people can't afford an amiibo or can't get their hands on the one they want at all.

  • The Shovel Knight Amiibo that was recently announced unlocks new customisable gear, exclusive challenge stages and co-op mode. I think something like that would be cool for Pokemon games. Say if you got a Water-type Pokemon Amiibo it unlocked a new area where you could find special Water-type Pokemon or battle previous generation Gym Leaders or Elite Four who specialise in Water-types! And maybe got some exclusive themed swag to customise your game too!

No. No no no no no no. NO.

My bank account cries at the thought of this. Nintendo have proven that they have no idea how to handle Amiibo when it comes to meeting the demand, can you even begin to imagine how bad this would be if there were a larger number of Pokemon Amiibo? The prices for some of the regular ones are terrifying because Nintendo are too inept to manage inventory properly; it'd be a collector's hell. I think this would piss off more people than it would please them, because you'd have a very small majority actually getting the figures they wanted, with the rest being left out in the cold because they weren't lucky enough to get a preorder in on time, or are unwilling to pay extortionate amounts of money for them online from marketplace sellers. Pokemon is aimed at children. You'd have a lot of very angry parents sending very angry letters to Nintendo about stock shortages when their kids didn't get the ones they wanted. Sure, from a business standpoint Nintendo would make a ton, but considering they can't handle the demand properly - which they've already proven with regular Amiibo - it'd be a TERRIBLE move.

Pokemon is not Skylanders or Disney Infinity. Part of the appeal of Pokemon is that it's a complete experience by itself; you don't have to pay any extra money for cut content, etc. Amiibo are essentially physical DLC. Imagine how you'd feel if Nintendo started selling Pokemon as paid DLC. It'd be exactly the same principal for Pokemon Amiibo, the only difference would be you'd be paying more and you'd have a figurine. It's unnecessary and a complete ripoff beside, especially considering past games have been complete without it. Sure, with Amiibo they'd be able to add content after the game's release, but that's what patches are for. It's quite possible to add extra stuff through free patches, and if they absolutely must add to their games after release - which they've never done before and don't really need to do now - I'd much rather that they not abuse paid DLC and go the free patch route instead.

It'd be a nice way to get those event-exclusive Legendaries that Game Freak just refuse to let us acquire through normal means in the game, or version exclusives if you don't have anyone to trade with - after all, online players on GTS etc. are damned unreasonable in what they ask for sometimes - but I'd HATE to see this be fully incorporated into the game itself. I say again: Pokemon is not Skylanders or Disney Infinity. No. No. NO. We should not have to pay for things that should be incorporated into the game from the get-go, and the prospect of additional content being distributed through Amiibo is a horrible one. In fact, it's WORSE if it's done that way than if it's done through DLC, because at least with digital content everyone can get it, and prices are substantially lower.

    Hush. You'll give Nintendo ideas.

  • A lot of people here fail to understand that Amiibos have content that are not required to complete a game 100%, unlike most DLC in AAA titles. They're meant to be bonus content. I suspect the Pokemon amiibos would only be used to obtain a specialized version of that same Pokemon (3 perfect IVs, a move it cannot naturally learn, a special ribbon, etc.) much like the ones you get via Mystery Gift. I doubt they'll make amiibos of all 721+ Pokemon, which is why amiibo cards exist.
