  • I know this news is a week old or so, but who or what do you think was ultimately responsible for causing a societal meltdown in Mecklenburg County in North Carolina?

If you don't know anything about the riots in NC, they began soon after a black man, Keith Lamont Scott (43), was shot by police officers. Now, the shooting was deemed justifiable, due to the fact that he was a repeat offender, a felon, had a firearm on his person (some say 9mm, some say .380) and he had even threatened to kill his own wife and child previously.

What policies should be put in place to avoid riots in the future? Should the media be involved? Should protests be allowed so soon after without all the facts? Should the investigations be completely transparent? An isolated incident? Your thoughts?

What I'm concerned about is that this seems to be the norm these days, regardless of the preceding conditions that led up to said shooting. The riots seem to be getting more and more frequent as time wears on, despite good or bad police work.

  • The riots are a sign of unrest. There are a number of people discontent enough to riot; and those people's concerns do need to be heard out and addressed as soon as possible.

Unfortunately I believe that sometimes Law Enforcement Officers are given a little bit too much freedom to do their jobs; and that's unfortunately allowed some to abuse that authority and freedom. Cases such as this need to be assessed, addressed and dealt with swiftly and in a way that all feel that justice is served.

To prevent further riots; they need to deal with things and make people feel satisfied with whats being done. There's no other 'cure' or 'fix' to this problem. Laws need to be evaluated and passed so that there are ways and means for people who feel have been treated unjustly by LEOs to have their case heard out fairly. It's sometimes hard to make people believe in such a system but it works eventually. If riots continue; then change is needed. if they settle down, then perhaps not. Only time will tell.
