Rain, Vines, and Rust: Oppo Day vs. Rui

Hello fellow people of planet earth. I'm a fairly new battler, despite stalking the S&M forums for since I first joined here close to two years ago. However, stalking and theorymonning have only gotten me that far, and eventually I've become rather mad at myself for not doing something about my pokemon battling addiction... which leads me to this team. You see, about a week ago, I puzzled together an UU team based on what I'd like to try the most, STALL. After a bit of advice from the local deity on that particular subject, I got ready to gain some experience. Though I've frequently become outmatched against others and tend to overpredict a rather lot, I still kept "fighting", learning more and more every match. But in all my battles I'd never faced the so-called biggest threat in the UU metagame, a Rain Dance team... until this match. The total noob against the Goliath of UU.. what could possibly go wrong?

    Oppo Day sent out Steelix.
    Vui sent out Electrode.

Electrode = Rain Dance. Considering how many Frosleads I've met (*cough* taunt *cough*), I simply decide to attack all out, since Electrode only runs Thunder and Explosion anyway, and also in order to prevent it from setting up later or killing my bulky waters later on, since a random explosion midgame is just horribly annoying if Tomb/Steelix are dead.

    Electrode used Rain Dance.
    Rain began to fall!
Steelix used Earthquake. (It's super effective!)
Electrode lost 100% of its health.
    Vui's Electrode fainted.
    The rain continues to fall.

    Electrode: 0% /FNT

    Steelix: 100%

    Nothing horribly surprising happens here.

Well, there's no way that anyone would keep Steelix in on a water-type in the rain, so I go to Venu to soak up the incoming Surf. He probably expects a switch, but then again, I'm not that bright that I would realize that such a thing would be logical, and thus, I stay in none the less in order to scout his team. Oma gets forced out, and 252 SDef EV's pay off when a glaring 4x weak rips through the shellfish the same way Germany ripped Poland to pieces. Unlike Germany, however, this means that Venu is down at 8%, and considering that this is a Rain Dance team, it seems to me that the preservation of it is more important than absolutely everything else. :/

Considering how Kabutops is feared even in OU when it's swimming, I take no risks, and go directly to Blastoise. Toise does not like being set up on, and forces the other prehistoric Gen 1. shellfish out in a less forceful way, but in trying to do so, Ludi gets a free switch in, which is not exactly ideal considering that I already know that it's running Leech Seed, and Venu is in no state to switch in again..

Yep, it Leech Seeds on the switch, and I made a rather stupid mistake by not realizing that Clefable is immune to Leech Seed, thus switching in Tomb to take one for the team (it has like the lowest HP of everything of my team, so it feels like a rather safe switch). However, again I make a fool of myself by switching into Clefable, (I really wanted to get rid of the seeds) giving him another free switch. Expecting a fighting attack, I switch back again to Tomb in order to let the fairy survive, essentially giving my opponent yet another free turn..

I only know one set that Toxicroak runs with a sub, and that is the one with Focus Punch. With that settled, I stay in. Considering that I can't burn him at the moment, I just fire off my only attacking move, hoping that it'll do enough damage. However, Dark Pulse crits twice in a row, not only breaking his sub on the first try, but also putting him down to around 50%. A burn seems in order to me, but he switches (probably expecting to sponge the hit with Ludi's base 100 SDef), giving me one fried duck. Thankfully, this'll mean that the pineapple will be much easier to stall out.

I switch to Venu on the expected Rain Dance in order to try to heal up, but I'm not running any speed at all on it, and thus I fear that it might get outsped by Ludi. Considering how Venu is the key to winning this, I try to Encore the seeds in order to provide a free Synthesis, but my opponent thinks otherwise and makes Kabutops return for a second round. I go back to Tomb trying to cripple it. I guess having as good as no resistances becomes its bane here, but it would have lived the waterfall D: At least the rain gets stalled out by Tomb's sacrifice.

Being rather annoyed by having two team members being KO'd that swiftly, I do what I should've done the moment Tomb fainted.

DAMN IT. I feel extremely stupid at this point, because due to me not having set up SR in the beginning, Kabutops is actually allowed to use his sash in order to KO Venusaur with Flail. Realizing this also makes the crit against Qwil hurt even more, due to the fact that it would've prevented this situation from happening in the first place.. Oh well. I pray Blastoise will be able to take one hit from a fully-powered flail D:

Considering that the only attacking move I have on Blastoise is Surf, and the last poke he has is Toxicroak, I decide that Blastoise will have to die if I'm going to have any chance of winning this. This doesn't prevent it from taking the fully-powered flail like a champion and dishes back the necessary 1HP of damage.

Way to not use Qwilfish right noooooooooooooooooooob lol

See this is exactly why damp rock is suspect, rain dance is annoying. Though this isnt the nasty rain dance team. The nasty rain dance teams use specs Gorebyss which 2hkos your entire team in Rain with h-pump, including venu and toise. Staller Ludicolo is garbage too and so is Lanturn in all honesty, he should be running Registeel to stop Raikou/Mismag etc owning him when rain goes down, but oh well. Also shame tops didnt set up. :/

Anyway nice format and a decent battle overall. ^__^

Now this is a Battle Log.

Excellent commentary, excellent format, surprisingly good battle, all topped off with just the right choice of sprites; Pokesho. This is probably the best log we've had in PC since late 08 (sorry D_A). Great job!

  • Breaking Stall! [A OU Battle Log]

    Breaking Stall!

    Introduction:
I was hanging around the server one morning, due to school being out and such, so when Kalsard half-way asked me to help him out testing a new team, I didn't hesitate. Little did I know how the following battle would turn out...

We both start out with Swampert, which means free rocks for all. (Yay go leads that really can't do much to anything) Also I kinda doubt that it will be an offensive team he is running, Also, I'm fairly certain that he'll just start by roaring after he got his rocks up, so I'll just stay in to attack with w/e comes out after the roar.

Guess what, Jirachi is completely walled by pert unless it runs Grass Knot. My Jira is choiced, and since grass is an awful attack to be locked into, I do not carry it (lol). U-turn is perhaps daft on anything but CB Ape or Scizor, but in this case it helps quite a bit, by 1) ensuring that it wasn't a sashed pert lead (4 rose!!), and 2) it allows me to get a free switch-in to Rotom. In hindsight, I probably could've gone to Celebi at once to force it out, but there's something about taking 0% damage from an attack that greatly appeals to me. This pert is also quite annoying, as it has now scouted 2/3 of my team without even showing anything else, but with it being so dedicated to phasing, I have this feeling that it might very possibly be a stall team I'm facing – and since I have no spinner, I'd just better put on enough pressure to ensure that as few hazards as possible gets set up.

See, there's the difference between a weak U-turn from Jirachi and a CB Scizor. ^^ It also greatly annoys me how much SR damage Scizor has to take, as I have no wish support it will eventually take its toll. I just decide to spam U-turn again, as if he stays in, he'll die, so a switch is fairly assured. He goes to Forry, so my stalling concerns were indeed true. Now, I could either go to Rotom to block a spin, but seeing as it is a SubSplit version it is probably 2hko'd by Payback, so doing that would be silly in the first place. Therefore, I go to Celebi (with HP Fire!) to see what happens – however I expect him to scout for it, so I'll just T-wave whatever comes in, be it a Heatran or a (wish) Salamence expecting to take w/e I throw at them.

Well, this isn't great. For one thing, Blissey completely walls Celebi, and ensures that Leaf Storm does ass damage in return. It doesn't mind para as much either, because this means it doesn't have to worry about toxic + pursuit :< What I do here is simply to go to Rotom on an expected S-toss, but Kalsard does what I filed as too silly, why would anyone (purposely) status a Natural Cure poke? So yeah, Rotom is now crippled and useless, since it can't sub up with toxic damage looming in the background. So much for "prediction".

When I first saw the pain split calc, I was like "96%??? OHKO!!", but sadly I immediately got reminded that Pain Split doesn't work that way. I receive an unexpected bonus there, as with pert roaring Rotom out, it doesn't take more toxic damage! \0/ I take what I get. Also, in the middle of my silliness I forget that I pack U-turn on Jira, and go directly to Celebi to kill off Pert. My intentions might have been a "little" clear, however, as the fat egg absorbs the incoming flurry of leaves like the Berlin Wall absorbed tons of East-german inhabitants and their dreams, and just like them and their wall, my only hope of getting past Bliss with Celebi would have to be hax. Why all the switching in-between Rotom-W and Celebi? Well, while none of them can really do very much to Blissey, Bliss can't do that much to them in return (or at least that would be the case if Rotom didn't get toxiced. However, I'm also trying to lure in Forry with the promise of free spikes when my (wow-less) Rotom is out with a good ol' double switch. Also go natural cure!

Ugh my horrible English shines through, "you had no chance of knowing", go go superior day. Anyway, the double trick finally works, and first blood is mine! Even though I might have gotten a little lucky, with forry dead now spikes should at least be of a lesser concern, which would make it significantly easier for Ape to sweep as it doesn't have to die in two turns when it switches out and back in.

Well, I'm not wasting any Thunderbolt pp on a blissey trying to stall me out from toxic! :> Ugh, I really should run restalk or something. This was originally a subcharge rotom, but due to advertising in the shoddy chat about "how annoying subsplit rotom is", I decided to try that as well. Not that it helps here. I figure that it'll just heal up swampert, so I stay in to shadow ball and at least not grant it a completely free switch-in.

Ugh. Ttar makes his appearance, and even though I didn't switch, Pursuit still ko's without trouble. This also tells me that it is that damned Scarftar, another poke that I'll have to try to lure with Celebi if I'll ever have any hope of smashing through with Ape. Luckily most of my team really doesn't care about SS, so it doesn't matter that much - after all, I'll likely only get one shot at sweeping with Infernape anyway with all that passive damage.

Well, I was fairly certain he was going to switch, so U-turn felt like a safe choice, but it ends up doing nothing to Skarm. Pert carries H-pump as earlier explained, and it is supposed to 2hko skarm with a few spa ev's. However, he switches into Rotom-H – and while that is not that surprising, the damage is kinda strange, as in my experience a hydro pump from pert does at least around 40% to max hp / 0 sdef rotom, so he must be running some weird specially defensive set. Anyway, I figure that it does okay damage, and stay in to take the wow (Celebi into Rotom-H is a big NO, and Infernape likely wouldn't have been able to kill off Rotom in one shot, and there's tar as well..)

I kinda expected Blissey to switch into the pump, but there was only so much I could do about it, and switching Scizor into Rotom-H is like trying to swallow your tongue, it is possible, but if you actually do it the consequences could be fatal. So anyway, with his Rotom having apparently less investment in def, I figure that it wouldn't like to take an U-turn at all, and as such I decide to smack whatever comes in hard with a superpower (yes, this is a CB Scizor w/o Pursuit, silly I know :< )

Well, that did less than I expected, and while I could probably do more next turn to it if it is faster with superpower, it still wouldn't be even close to a ko, so with me still being reluctant to showing off ape, I go to Jira to try to prevent (more?) spikes from being set up (yes, I know it is bad relying on flinchhax for that, but honestly I felt like I had no other choice :x) Also, if I use anything else than Iron Head, ttar might come in and pursuit me to death, which really isn't that tempting.

I go to my own Pert to take the predicted EQ aimed at Jirachi, as I am not willing to push my luck further with flinching. Poor Swampert, it is getting shook with U-turns all night long. Anyway, I'm not that keen on giving Rotom a completely free switch-in, so Hydro Pump seems like the best alternative. Well, this was most certainly disappointing damage. Swampert, you are officially declared useless, and will be sacked the next time ttar makes an entrance. In comes Celebi, as with a little bit of luck, I can end up baiting tar out by enabling a resting pattern (what I'm trying to do, is to let him toxic me, and make it clear when I'm resting – eventually, if he gets used to it, he'll switch in ttar as he predicts as I'll rest, thus allowing me to leaf storm his sorry tyraniass goodbye).

What I said in the chat, lol. Essentially I thought that with all that crazy jirachi hax, it might have been in a situation where it could be 2hko'd by iron head, hence why he switched, but bullet punch doesn't do nearly enough :< I should've just superpowered for a guaranteed kill on tar, and skarm would still be killed by that with sr, but that would also mean that I'd have to sack something to burn, which really isn't what I'd like. I'm also kinda reluctant to switching scizor out, as with no spinner, it is dead the next time it switches in, and that silly tar is from now on only going to pursuit anyway, so I can't scout by sacrificing it :<

Guess what, surprisingly enough ttar didn't switch in. Booo tinkerbell, you are not very good at your job. Essentially, I'll just let him wear me down so I can net a kill, or if anything else tries to switch in, I'll paralyze it so it is easier for ape later, so for now I'll do nothing but to spam t-wave.

I don't know whether I should be glad or not that bliss keeps paralyzing itself when it tries to toss me. On the bright side, hey, no damage, on the not so bright side, it ruins the entire reason why I'm staying in and not just sacking scizor for ape to wreck stuff.

I send in Jirachi to try to revenge it, but from the Scizor episode he is far more prepared for my so-called "revenge killing", and it ends up with pert being sent out to take the flinchhax. Skarm comes out, which pretty much equals spikes + whirlwind, which essentially means that it is now or never that Ape can sweep, since it'll most likely die in two turns with spikes + sr + lo + ss + another attack. Ugh.

What's really annoying here is that 1) I used to run Mach Punch >> Stone Edge to take out specifically Scarftar, and 2) Even at -2, Pursuit actually had a chance of not killing me if I stayed in, but I just figured that it could switch in later if it crunched (nvm spikes 'n SR, sure. Oh well, success! At least to a certain degree, since Ape removed pert, nothing should stop my choiced Jirachi from killing the rest of his team.

While I do not know the EV spread, I've got this nasty feeling that I've only rolled min damage the first few turns.. Oh well, it doesn't really change the end result, since if I switch out, I die anyway, and his ttar is at 13% before rocks, so fire punch should ko. Thing is, because of shoddy rounding everything up, I don't know whether his Ttar is at 12,4% or lower – if it is, I've won. If it isn't… well, I said this was a choiced Jirachi, right? Sad thing is, it is a CB rachi, so ttar outspeeds it any day (how did you think I killed skarm lol)

  • Good game and if you look at the end, Scizor was over killed by spikes damage as well.
    My Skarmory's EV's were off. :(
I was EV'd for attacking when I didn't have an attacking move.

Amazing battle and amazing comments and pictures. I loved this log and i really hope you post more. Nothing this good has graced S+M since Postmans "Monster Mash" log wise.

Also i run a modified LO Celebi on my stall team, is that where you got the idea from haha ?

In hindsight, I probably could've gone to Celebi at once to force it out, but there's something about taking 0% damage from an attack that greatly appeals to me.
    ._. lol

SS damage could have been taken out, but it doesn't matter much. And to improve the battle scene for future logs having a health bar would be awesome. ;D Overall, great warstory and kept me interested until the end.

  • AaAA I still have ss damage in? I guess too much was immune to it, so I didn't notice :<
    I'll edit that out.
And as for health bars, we'll see (though this took me two straight days to make quite literally, if I *ever* decide to make another one like this, it'd have to be a shorter one not vs stall lol ._.)

    Thanks for commenting everyone! ^^

  • Best log on PC by far, not a question about it. It was a good battle, the pictures were awesome to have, and...it is sexy. K you win.

  • trying to swallow your tounge, it is possible
To make it look better, tounge is spelt tongue. I tried thinking of some comments to put in the battle log, but I failed to write anything vaguely entertaining. I guess it's better without my comments xD Although the fact that my Skarmory had attack EV's when it had no attacks was a bit stupid. X_X

A very good read, I was liking it alot mostly before the first kill xD To bad tyranitar didn't fall to the last SR damage, overall it was a very close fight.

Off-Topic: In wifi we can't use the rotom appliances right? just to be sure, sry if it's inconvinient or has already been answered.

Mindgames : Earthworm Vs Dark Azelf [Suspect Warstory]

Well i was on the suspect ladder about a month ago with my troll "take Salamence out of the metagame and ill just spam fighting types" HO team. I was winning quite alot and got top 15 before long, as expected in a non mence meta by spamming said fighters. However, i clicked the find tab again and not expecting anything out of the ordinary, i got paired with.....

    Rules
    - Ladder Match
    - Sleep Clause
    - Freeze Clause
    - OHKO Clause
    - Evasion Clause
    - Species Clause
    - Strict Damage Clause

    Azelf: 100%/ Reflect

Dammnit, Earthworm. This guy runs stall nearly as good as anyone can, this is going to a horribly hard match. We battled twice and this is the 1st match, the second was more in my favour so as thus wouldn't make such a good warstory lol. As you can see, polar opposite play styles so this should be great too. Earthworm was like #2 at this point iirc.

Anyway a Forretress lead, this automatically hints at stall. Forry Vs Azelf is a scenario im really familiar with and im really just thinking "inb4scarftarswitch" which explains why i set up Reflect. To my surprise he goes to Heatran which is kinda odd but ok i guess.

I set up Light Screen and Flamethrower does pathetic damage, this also lets me know he is using a defensive Heatran (which is godly btw :])

Good sequence of moves for me here, i set up Stealth Rock and stop him setting up Toxic Spikes, i wonder why he did that though all dual screen elves have Taunt so yeah. I guess he was predicting that i thought he would Payback because the Taunt was way too obvious.

Oh well, since this seems like a defensive team i could care less that my Rocks got spun away. I doubt anything he has stops SD Cross since nothing on stall can. Even Gliscor loses to this set and that Rapid Spin screams "set up on me" which is precisely what im going to do.

Umm, ok i guess. Standard Hippowdon cant even touch this set outside of Roar and if it does that then my DDTar sweeps due to Hippow taking near fatal damage so its up to him.

Based on that damage, his Gyarados is Impish as it would do like 70% to non Impish ones even after the att drop. That damage is great though, every time Gyara comes in and takes damage the more chance Lucario has to sweep. Stealth Rock not being up sucks though as that would decimate Gyara but oh well.

I go for the obvious move, Stone Edge and he goes back to Hippow for LO + SS Stalling as he has no way to deal with SD Cross.

I catch on to what he is doing (as said LO stalling) and take the opportunity to SD again so he cant use resists against me anymore which was a great prediction on my part. This really helps softening up his team.

Fantastic. I was going to Megahorn Rotom since its not walling +3 Megahorn at all but it may of had Overheat which is horrible but whatever people still use it. Earthworm realises this switching is just wearing down his team as he is doing nothing. Nothing can now take Megahorns apart from Heatran but would you REALLY risk switching that into Hera when i could easily hit CC ? Sacrificing Hippowdon was really the only thing he could of done which is great for me and it puts massive pressure on him now and backs him into a corner. Removing Hippowdon really opens up his team to my Tyranitar and Lucario in the wings.

That may have seemed risky but after i saw the Protect i KNEW he was going to Rotom-H. Gyarados couldnt take CC's and neither could anything else on his team. The more damage that takes the more chance Gyara and Lucario have of sweeping.

Heracross may have fainted but it has BADLY hurt his physical walling core.

I was going to Taunt Rotom but i thought setting up screens would be better in the long run as it lets me sweep easier and i knew Rotom wasnt staying in as he had already seen Taunt.
I was going restart with Lucario but i figured Gyara would just wall me as its still at way too high health to break through.

I Taunt to stop those Toxic Spikes as they will cripple me horribly and get hit with a Payback which isn't all that bad.

I set up Reflect and so both screens are up again as Forretress feebly Rapid Spins expecting the SR.

I go to Gyarados to set up on Forretress as my Gyarados has the best chance to sweep seeing as Rotom, the only Gyarados counter ive seen has been mauled by Heracross.

To my surprise though, Earthworm goes to Gyarados for the intimidate which i guess what a good move on his part.

It may have seemed like Gyarados hasn't done anything but let him get Spikes up (via hax >_>). However allow me to explain, his Gyara is in pretty much in kill range for Lucario now and Forretress is the prefect set up bait for it so with the constant switching has really just harmed himself.

Either way it was good thinking on his part but my sac Meta to get Tar in for free plan negated his though process.

Lol love the sneaky little attack raise there. Either way that was kinda inevitable after mashing a few times in a row.

Anyway this is a double ko and a perfect opportunity to indeed get my Tyranitar in thank god Blissey is weakened.

  • Wow Hera is a pain in the ass lol.

What an awesome match, both you and EW played great but some good predictions on your part kept the momentum in your favor. I love watching offensive teams when they're played correctly as it makes for much more entertaining battles.

Rofl @ the Bright Powder comments, even though we SAW the Leftovers healing =P

    Nice job bb.
