  • Many parts of OoT scared me. Even Dodongo's Cavern, solely because of that music. Once I turned it down, I had no problem getting through it. xD All of the ReDeads, the Well, and the Shadow Temple were too much for me, though. I didn't actually get through the Shadow Temple until maybe 2009 - having first played OOT around 2000 or 2001. lol

I hate Arbiter's Grounds in Twilight Princess as well. The Redeads in that game are far scarier than the OOT/MM variety, and I still can't play through it. >.<

  • The fucking NOT TAKE MIRROR jesus christ on a crutch. Threw me for a loop when I was younger and first playing Twilight Princess. Yeah, how about no. That piano too, ugh.

I don't think anyone's mentioned that fucking spiky ass tank from Jak II either. UNAUTHORIZED USE OF FACTORY DOOR. ACTIVATING SECURITY TANK. I was SWEATING. At least the music is sweet.

And I'll just leave this gem here.

That one Bodybuilder trainer in Pokemon Colosseum. Y'know that last arena area before the final boss? You get all the keys from the Cipher guys and enter the casino and then all of a sudden BOOM! you get a jump scare from the Bodybuilder charging at you from the door.

if this ain't the realest shit in this thread tho

  • As a kid the only games I played were Mario, Pokémon and Kirby really. And there aren't really many scary moments in those games... however, the ReDeads in Smash Bros. Melee's Adventure mode really freaked me out, because I had no idea what they were (hadn't played Zelda before then). They put me off playing Adventure mode for quite a few years...

  • Basically anything involving ReDeads in Ocarina of Time used to scare the living heck out of me, most notably the Shadow Temple and the Bottom of the Well.

Fortunately, the ReDeads in Majora's Mask didn't scare me as much, but that was mostly due to the vast number of options we had to fight them with (like, the Goron Mask).

I think my fear of ReDeads completely died out after I saw this really lame YouTube video titled "How to not be scared of ReDeads" or something along those lines. xD

Knights in the castle level of Medal of Honor: Underground, made all the more daunting by the clunking of their footsteps, audible well before they enter one's line of sight; or the way they're otherwise visible but don't move at all (so they just look like decorative suits of armour) until approached. Consider that this is a WWII shooter which prior to this moment showed no signs of Wolfenstein-esque shenanigans (one does start with a thematic crossbow earlier in the mission, but it's the historical Big Joe 5 that was actually designed for the OSS and is reasonably appropriate for the mission). Amusingly, their attacks aren't very damaging. I initially fled from them, genuinely expecting to be hewn down in one blow. There are also the bonus levels, but they're straight-up freaky to the point of being goofy. Like the dance the dogs do, it's just bewildering. Pretty cool though how the bipedal dogs wielding weapons seem to use the exact same animation rigging as human enemies, and yet they don't look too strange, so far as it not completely fucking up their anatomy goes.

Yucatan Peninsula and Bermuda Triangle levels in Treasures of the Deep. The OGRE suit/mech thing in the Mariana Trench level is scary too, although not in a horrifying way, it's just a boss-grade enemy that suddenly appears out of the dark without an introduction cutscene.

343 Guilty Spark level in Halo: Combat Evolved.

I just thought of this scene from Ace Attorney Investigations, with the Proto Badger

    Spoiler:

Those hollow eyes, man. It was just an unexpectedly creepy thing in a game like that. :P

  • Okay, shame on me for forgetting the Ultimate Chimera from MOTHER 3:

I mean, seriously?! An instant game-over in a traditional RPG that spawns right in front of you in the bathroom?! Yeesh. >_>

I know I have stated this in other threads before, but again—Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is not precisely a horror game, but its Silent Realm quests were absolutely terrifying.

In these missions, we are not permitted to take any sort of weapons with ourselves when entering, preventing us from being able to attack if we do run into trouble. In realms, our task is to primarily collect tear drops. However, there are these things known "guardians," which, by the way, are pretty intimidating, and they would be awakened if we stay out of our "safe-zone" long enough while collecting.

When the guardians are fully awake, they would immediately begin chasing you, trying to hit. If they do manage to touch you, somehow, you would be kicked out of the realm and be required to start your quest from all over. Also, when they do go after you, the background music would intensify, which… doesn't actually help making you feel calm, haha.

  • There comes a time in every young Steef's life, where they have to kill a Gloktigi. You heard me right. A Gloktigi. That's it's name. Go look it up, I'm not kidding. Anyway, these things are scary as hell! They can turn into phantoms and fly around invincible like ghosts, they can spin and grind and kill you with brute force, all while having appearance like something out of Lovecraft that went to a Nine Inch Nails concert in a dystopian future. Also you are surrounded by razor pits that can kill you instantly. It's something else.

I think there's a good item in that present box too, so...btw, you can totally sneak over there and get out quickly and not get the game over in that room there. Or maybe you leave the room, then leave that room, then come back in and make a run for it to the toilet. Something of that sort. But yeah, that thing scares me. When I got to that level on my second playthrough, meaning I'd beaten this before and know how to do that level and shouldn't be worried about it, I didn't play for a day cause I wasn't ready to deal with it lol. That little sound when he sees you scares me, and it's not even scary! It's just scary cause now you know hE SEES YOU AND YOU GOTTA GET OUT

I hate invincible insta-kill enemies for that specific reason. Also averse to chase scenes. I find them way too tense for my liking and I freak out way more than I should during them. If I know there's something like that coming up in a game then I literally dread it leading up to it, lmao.

  • I'm going to get laughed at for this, but for when I was a kid, the Title Screen and Music from the NES game "Dragon Power" (which was stuck in a reset loop, so that didn't help me at all) scared me to the point that I never wanted to see the game (even in cartridge) ever again and today, it still holds true (Funny on how childhoods turn out)

Looool, I don't even have the guts to try that. xD I'm thinking only an expert TAS'er could actually sneak behind that wretched beast unnoticed, by using some crazy frame manipulation. o_O

Yep, this is definitely the preferred method of doing it. I think the chimera was literally chasing me in circles before I finally got that present box LOL.

    This.
To be honest, when I first played the game I did NOT expect that chimera AT ALL. So like, as soon as I went into that bathroom stall, I was like OH #$%@&* and fell out of my chair. {D:} Also, I have a question for the development team that worked on the game: WHAT THE HECK IS A CHIMERA DOING IN A BATHROOM STALL?! (For the record, it's a machine... but I literally heard it flushing the toilet before walking in there. O_O)

  • When Yeta's face turned demonic in LOZ: Twilight Princess, I think childhood me had a near death experience that day.

  • Ignoring Ravenholm, there are a number of pretty scary moments in Half-Life 2. But the one that got me the most, was sort of obscure. After you leave Ravenholm, you will find yourself going through a laundromat. If you sneak to the back instead of proceeding, you can find a secret stash of supplies. You can also find a panting Black Headcrab Zombie. Until you realize what it is, it is really creepy, and even the moment when it attacks you is surprising as it comes from out of the darkness to get you. I can't think of any other times that this sound is used, but it is extremely effective on top of the fact that Black Headcrabs are the worst!

    TLoZ OoT seems to be the source of many people's fears haha. I personally really didn't like the stalchildren that came out at night in Hyrule Field. Really scared me haha. Freaked me out so much I had to turn off my console when I was seven. ;-;
