Varik Umbra

Varik walked out of the shareholders meeting with a sigh. All he had planned to do was sell one little invention to help pay for a new weapon, armor, and a birthday gift for Nilya, but instead he became very wealthy. He also had a sizable amount of shares in the technology company that he sold his new "personal hard interactive hologram device" or whatever they were going to call it. He did not care, that was marketing's job to come up with a catchy title, they just gave him a large number of shares to insure his loyalty to the brand. Entering the elevator to go to the bottom floor of the massive 25 story building, Varik quickly loosened his tie before pressing the button for the bottom floor. Pulling out his new business scroll Varik wanted to go over some numbers as the metal box descended. He had just entered the password then he was interrupted by the woman who had entered the elevator behind him.

"Varik Umbra?" asked a heavy accent, causing Varik to notice the woman for the first time. He felt his nerves go on guard due to her appearance. She was as tall as him and was wearing a black khakis and a shirt that hugged her skin, over this was a black vest, and her belt held a pistol in its holster on her right hip. Her unnatural red eyes were unsettling as the iris seemed to be constantly moving on their own.

"Yes?" asked Varik as he eyed her cautiously.

"My name is Dostya Brackman, I am here on the behalf of my father, Dr. Gustaf Brackman. He is very interested in meeting you, and discussing a possible joint business venture," said the woman's calm voice.

"I already have partners…" replied Varik.

"Not like my father," she replied as she handed him a scroll.

Varik put away his scroll and took the one she handed him and started looking at the information on it. He stared at it until the elevator stopped on the bottom floor before handing it back to the woman. "I am not sure I can help. I am not too keen on making weapons…" replied Varik in a shaky voice.

"This is NOT a weapon, it is the first step toward a scientific golden age. My father is not interested in war… only science and progress," replied the woman defensively.

"It could be used as a…" Replied Varik as he stepped out of the elevator, but the woman soon interrupted him.

"Anything can be used as a weapon including your little hologram invention. This is about scientific progress," interrupted the woman. "My father does not care about the growing conflict with the faunus. He works with both faunus and humans in order to pursue scientific discoveries."

Varik sighed as he noted her mention of the possible conflict between the two races and thought for a second before saying, "Fine, go ahead and set up a meeting with your father and let me know when."

"He is ready for you now, follow me," replied the woman as she stepped in front of Varik to lead the way.

Varik lifted an eyebrow before pulling out his scroll and writing a message for his wife. "Are you coming?" asked the woman impatiently. Varik held up his finger to symbol for her to wait so he could finish the message. Once he was done he put away his scroll and followed the woman toward the exit of the building, making sure to grab his jacket and weapon from the front desk before heading out into the cold...

Team FEAR
(condensed for reduction of clutter and broken in the middle for your convenience)

Spoiler:

Four dead and seven wounded as tragedy strikes a small neighborhood outside Vacuo! A travelling circus visiting the neighborhood of Ventui was the site of a vicious attack by roaming Venom Saws on Monday, leaving the people in panic and the circus in ribbons.

Venom Saws are Rank D Grimm, and the circus claims to have been rimmed with industrial Grimm repellant graded for Grimm up to rank C. Researchers now fear that Grimm may be becoming resistant to repellant, leaving the layman no means but the brutish to be safe from these terrible creatures.

"Don't worry," said Haley Grewn, leader of Team HOPE—the most effective Grimm-clearing team in rotation—, to a crowd of frightened people this morning in front of Vacuo's courthouse. "Even if Grimm repellant becomes absolutely useless, we huntsmen and huntresses will protect you every hour of the day and night! There was a time before repellant, and its introduction only made us lower our guard. No more! More teams will be assigned to Grimm-clearing, stronger teams will be posted as ferry escorts, and we will direct as much resource as necessary to ensuring you may all sleep safe and sound in your beds without fear."

The leaders of teams BOOM and DIRJ have given similar reassurances elsewhere as well, but unrest continues to rise, and in the wake of Faunus found on Island G, the questions come through: can we afford to ignore Menagerie any longer? What lengths would Faunus terrorists go to to make their point? Would they sic Grimm on a circus full of innocent people?

More at eight; I'm Leroy Lavender.

Jairo & Sahn Xill

Mira Cullous      Nel Phelia

Team JSMN
The Cold days

"So what do you think?" Mira asked, showing the drawing off to her two teammates in front of her. The group sat at outside at a table, in the now-deserted yard of the academy. Despite the fact it wasn't as cold today as the other days, snow still covered the entire island - with leafless fruit trees scattered around the whiteness like black specks on a sheet, and rooftops covered in a thick layer of white.

Sahn squinted. "Mm. Eyes look weird. Blocky."

"They are meant to be like that, blocks are the entire purpose of polygonal art." Mira corrected. "It's a style I've been trying to perfect lately, and drawing animal subjects is a nice change from buildings. Jairo, what do you think?"

The diminutive spider faunus looked up from his violin momentarily. "...what? Oh, lemme have a look." he said, snatching the paper from her with one of his additional arms. "Looks decent." he said, raising up the drawing and shrugging slightly. "What's it meant to be? Bugger looks like he's havin' a seizure or something."

"That," Mira began, snatching back the paper angrily, ",is a hawk. And it is very much alive." Jairo simply scoffed, returning to playing his violin.

"Did I hear someone say hawk?" a voice suddenly called out from right behind Mira, startling the Owl faunus.

"Oh, Nel, it's just you." Mira said, sighing in relief.

"I was over there making snow angels. A lot more fun than sitting over here~" she giggled, brushing off the snow from her coat, shuddering slightly from the cold. "What'cha have there?"

Handing her the paper, Mira adjusted her scarf. "Yeah, I was showing Sahn and Jairo th-"

"Whoaaa! Now that is the best looking bird I've seen you draw, Mira!" Nel exclaimed excitedly, beaming. "I could even say it's looking..."

Jairo suddenly stopped his violin, glaring at her. "Nel, no, I swear to-"

"...pretty fly!" the bird hawk faunus smirked. "Why, hawk-ind of you to draw one just for me! You've reached the beak of your abilities, Mira!"

The owl faunus grimaced, ignoring the audible grunt from Jairo. "Uh... Thanks, Nel." she said, slowly taking the paper back from her teammate.

gyJByuV.jpg

Another half-hour passed, the wind picking up a little as the team chatted calmly. Suddenly, a loud beep sounded from Mira's wrist.

"Your watch? I thought it was broken?" Nel asked, raising an eyebrow at the beep.

Mira nodded, raising her forearm and tapping on the face of watch to show her. "I had a friend fix it for me a few days ago, she runs a workshop near where she lives. I wonder why her team's still hanging around the school."

"Well let's hope it's not for the same reason we are." Jairo replied, sheathing his instrument. "It's time, let's go." He hopped off the table, quickly looking around to make sure nobody was listening. "Hangar's only gonna be deserted for a short time, so let's get bloody moving."

Mira sighed as she got up, shaking her head in disapproval. "Jairo, listen, I've told my opinion on the matter-"

"That's right, I do. And it doesn't make a damn difference. We planned for this, we're going."

Sahn out a hand on her brother's shoulder, lifting him up onto her shoulders, and motioned for Mira to stay calm. "It's okay, calm down. She only agreed to help with the plan. If she doesn't want to come, it's her choice, Jairo." Her brother stayed silent, snorting angrily in response.

------------

The Faunus academy's hangar was quite well-protected from the snow. Built into the cliffside of the island overlooking the ocean, it was where the faunus stored all their airships stolen from the human forces. Mostly developed by Mira, the plan Jairo had conceived had been prepared months in advance. Under the cover of winter, where security personnel would be a lot lower than normal, anything was possible. This meant that in between patrol shifts, there would be more time where the hangar would be empty. With the wind now picking up and the weather getting slightly stormier, any sound made by a machine would be dismissed as the sound of the wind - circumstances perfect for stealing an airship.

The team arrived to the hangar, having gone down the emergency set of stairs lockpicked a few days earlier by Jairo. Inside were dozens of both small and larger airships - the biggest one taking up almost half of the hangar space.

"Whoa... That's a lot of ships to steal." Nel said, her eyes wide in amazement.

Jairo sighed in frustration. "Nel, if you weren't flying the damn plane I don't know why'd I keep you around."

"Lay off her." Mira responded dryly, and taking off her backpack. She pulled out a long rolled up map. "Here's the plans I made for your route. As I said, just follow the path and you'll be fine. It avoids any human detection, and is the shortest and safest way through the skies. Plus the weather shouldn't be too bad." she said, handing them to Sahn. "I know I said I didn't want to come, but... it's not for me. I made a promise to my sister that I'd stay here safely, and I will. I just can't go-"

"Yeah, that ain't keepin' a promise, that's called chickening out." Jairo spat, hopping off his sister's shoulders. "You 'don't want to come', then so be it. Rot in here for all I care." Standing awkwardly between the two, Nel tried her best not to point out the bird pun her teammate had made.

Mira frowned, her voice shaking. "Jairo, I've respected your wishes so far and kept quiet about it, the least you could do is-"

"Do what? Support your decision? Respect a coward? Yeah. You got nothing to go back to, is all. Team leader my abdomen." he scoffed. "When was the last time you even heard from your sis-"

"YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I LEFT BEHIND!" Mira suddenly screamed, tears in her eyes. "YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH IT'S KILLING ME INSIDE NOT TO KNOW! THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT I THINK MY ACTIONS THROUGH! I'M NOT A BRASH, ARROGANT, PIECE OF-"

"And sitting here thinking is gonna make here magically reappear, eh?" Jairo interrupted, raising his voice. "For all you know, she's already dead in the middle of nowhere and you're just sitting on a blind promise!"

Before Mira could retort, Nel called out to them. "Uhh, guys- I think we have a problem."

Team NAVF

"Why me…?" Fei whined, coming back from another misunderstanding with yet another lady. Long story short, he got quite the slapping. It's really hard to make new friends with the way his bad luck keeps following him.

It's been 3 months since NAVF's trip. Helping the injured, rescuing Archer, well, not really. He's still in a bind, but that aside, things have been a little quite. Beacon is covered in winter's snow, prompting everyone to bundle up. It was the holidays, & most students have either gone back to stay with their families, or stayed within the school. Fei stuck around. He couldn't really see his dad as he recently got a letter from him.

Spoiler:

So two things. He can't go back for the holidays, & he doesn't have his claw with him for a long while now. He's already told his team he sent his claw to his father. That just leaves him with his sword-staff. Perhaps he can find a way to fight without his claw. "Ah, at least I'm not fighting right now…" Fei sat down on a porch watching the snow descend towards the ground. Good thing he has on a fur coat colored in red with white around the collar. Just resting sounds pleasant.

Nilya looked at her scroll and sighed, still no message from her husband. He was suppose to return with her to Beacon after another couple of days relaxing in Vale, but he was pulled into another business meeting last minute. She was pleased with Varik's newest distraction as it meant he was finding purpose outside fighting, and the extreme wealth was a nice perk. Wealth she had to keep secret from everyone. She hated having to keep it from Fei and Amane, but now was not the time to let them know of the couple's new status.

Pulling away her scroll, Nilya adjusted the package under her left arm as she wandered the empty halls of Beacon looking for either Fei or Amane. Finally she discovered Fei sitting on a porch, and silently walked up next to him. "Do you enjoy winter Fei?" asked Nilya as she watched the snow slowly drift down.

Nilya soon appeared, greeting Fei. He looked at her with a smile. "Winter just feels...peaceful, watching the snow descend slowly. It's pleasantly quiet here too." He rubs his hair, chuckling away his recent worries. "You like winter too?" He asked Nilya.

"I like every season for different reasons. I do like winter's long nights… I am more comfortable in the dark. Also the cold means everyone wears more clothes, and more clothes makes certain features easier to hide," replied Nilya picking out one lazy snowflake to watch. She then took the package she had been carrying around and offered it to Fei. "Varik wanted to give you this in person, but he got tied up with work," sighed Nilya sadly as she held out the package for her teammate.

Nilya held out a gift that was from Varik apparently. Fei slightly blushed as he pointed at himself. "M-me…?" He looked around, expecting someone else to be there, & carefully took the gift from Nilya. "I-I don't really get gifts that often." He smiled, taking the moment in.

Carefully opening the package, Fei took out a weapon from inside. It looked like some sort of crossbow, with a high-powered hookshot attached to it. "Is this really for me…?" He stared at it in awe as he examined it in every angle.

Nilya nodded her head and said in a calm voice, "I had the impression you knew Varik was creating a new weapon for you. Perhaps it was just Varik jumping at the chance to create something for the team. I must admit he still seems a little disappointed in himself since the events on the island."

The island. The thought isn't very pleasant. Fei looked down at his new weapon. "I wonder if Archer is doing okay…"

"His body should have mended by now, but his mental wounds… you would have to ask him about," replied Nilya staring at the snowy school grounds. The faunus then looked down at Fei and asked, "Why are you so concerned about Archer?"

"You remember what happened back on the island. Some of the faunus there have tabs on Archer, & ever since, I don't know if they've forgotten him or not." He looked up at Nilya, a concerned expression across his face. "What if they force him back?"

Nilya looked down at Fei and paused a second before replying in a calm tone, "I doubt they have forgotten him, and I am sure they will try to make him go through with whatever deal they made with him. I just hope he does not make matters worse for the faunus." Nilya did not seem to care as much for Archer's well being as Fei did.

"..." Fei was silent, thinking about Archer & the faunus. They haven't made any attempt to get Archer back, at least from what he knows of. Just the thought scares him.

Nilya sat down next to Fei and said after a minute of awkward silence, "You should not worry about Archer so much. He is a trained hunter and he has his own team. Granted he seems to lack good judgement at times, but he is capable." Nilya stared straight ahead as she talked. She did say it, but Fei worrying about Archer so much was getting on her nerves. Deep down she knew it was tied to her own conflict over the events three months ago.

Deciding to change the subject a little before she let her feelings known, Nilya whispered, "I know this is a little late, but Nara is sorry for how she treated you. She was dealing with a lot of emotions at the time, and she took some of her frustration out on you."

Archer does have his own team. Maybe Fei's worrying about nothing. After all, everyone's training to become a hunter & huntress. Regardless, he does worry too much.

Nilya brought up Nara & the way she treated Fei. She's her sister if he recalls. He looked at Nilya & smiled, his grin very pleasant. "I don't mind, really. I'm a punching bag for anyone."

"That needs to stop. You should not have to accept being a punching bag. You are a kind gentle hearted man, but that does not mean you have to just take everyone's punishment. You should stand up for yourself more… that does not mean you have to fight. You can still take the moral high ground of non violence while not letting yourself get walked over," replied Nilya looking over at Fei to see his reaction.

Fei was a bit surprised at the way Nilya responded. She said all those nice things to him, as well as trying to give him some confidence. He's not used to such things, it was nice. Still… Fei just gave Nilya another smile. "I appreciate you saying that. I really do, but…" He paused a moment. "There's always someone who needs to just let out their frustration. I wanna be someone they can take it out on, someone they can talk to. I'm fine with all of that."

"You can do that without being such a pushover, Fei. If someone needs to beat on something there are punching bags for that. The world does not need punching bags, and being one does not help anyone. Especially not the one getting abused," replied Nilya with a sigh her voice showing frustration, but not at Fei. Shaking her head she just stared straight ahead.

Her voice was solemn when she spoke next, "Fei, I am not sure if I can continue to have you as an ally. You are a good person, but I do not know if you are strong enough for the trials ahead. The world is marching toward conflict, and there will be death. I am stuck in the middle of it… my human husband tieing me to one world, and my faunus family the other..." Nilya suddenly stopped talking as he stared at the ground in front of her in thoughtful silence.

Fei thought back to his childhood. "...I'm aware where this world is coming to. ...I used to have a faunus as a friend when I was a kid." He spoke up. He didn't say anymore as he was thinking about that fateful day.

Nilya looked shocked as Fei revealed a little of his past. She could not help but ask him, "What happened to them?"

"...She died. In the attack." He said quietly, not saying anymore & just sitting there with a simple stare at the falling snow.

Nilya felt guilty for her false impressions about Fei and his loss. Carefully moving next to him she wrapped her right arm around him and simply said in a sympathetic tone, "I am sorry Fei."

Fei blushed when Nilya wrapped her arm around Fei. He's not used to much contact with anyone. "I-It's okay. It was a long time ago."

Fei smiled as he stared at the snow, thankful for where he is right now. "...I told you that because I want you to know that I know what this world is like, & where it's headed. It's also because...I trust you." His grin looked cheerful as he said this, but he spoke genuinely, without wavering from his words. He wanted nothing more than to show his appreciation.

Nilya looked at Fei for a second before releasing him from the side hug. "Thank you… sorry that I have not been as trusting as you." Nilya looked straight ahead and added, "Sorry if I have been strange lately, and that I and Varik have been withdrawn from the team. Deep down I hoped the faunus would not let hate consume them like it is."

Nilya was silent for a second then added, "I also did not know how bad things had gotten for faunus either…" Wrapping her arms around herself she added, "I feel like I am betraying my family, and my kind. They are struggling through many hardships, and here I am living well among humans. I feel drawn to reunite with the faunus and help them in their struggle, but I know I cannot…"

Hearing about Nilya's own struggle got Fei thinking. She has some good points. Faunus resent the humans for how they are treated, & Nilya has her own dilemma. "I doubt I can understand what you're going through, but you shouldn't forget why you're fighting." He placed his hands on his knees, contemplating on the issue they were discussing. "You can go back & fight for the faunus, or you can keep fighting with Varik & the humans. Just remember who you're fighting for. Fight for what you believe in." Fei rubbed the back of his head feeling a little sheepish. "Heh. Sorry, I-I didn't mean to ramble. I h-hope that helped in any way."

Nilya forced a smile and looked at Fei then said in a soft voice, "No it helped. I am not leaving. I promised myself to Varik as his wife, and I love him deeply so I will not leave his side. It is just hard on me at times, especially when I talk to my family." The faunus stood up and added, "I also do not plan to abandon you and Amane. We are a team, but I also fear being trapped between two worlds will force me to make some very hard choices. What if I make the wrong one?"

Nilya then drew out a sword that was in its sheath on her waist before. Inspecting the blade, she said in a serious yet sad tone, "Fei I know hold you view conflict… I do not want to corrupt your innocence, but it has become unavoidable I feel like. I have to fight… maybe even kill… I do not want to, but I no longer see a path around it without abandoning those I care about."

This is really weighing heavily on Nilya. It left Fei a bit speechless. He just looked down with a gloomy look. "I'm fully aware of what's coming… I don't know what will happen… I don't know who will disappear… I don't know if I'll be forced to fight & kill or not… I just know that I don't want to be a bystander & watch this world crumble." He went quiet. Only the quiet snow falling could be heard. "I can't tell you what you should do. That's up to you. Me…" Fei stood up, adjusting his fur coat. "I'm gonna try to make this world a better place, despite what others might say." He smiled at the snowy sky, feeling the small snowflakes land on his face.

He turned & started walking off. Turning his head back towards Nilya with a smile, he replied, "That's enough of this negative talk. Let's go get some hot chocolate, if you want."

Nilya nodded with a smile and said, "Sounds like a good idea Fei." She then motioned for Fei to lead the way.

Jairo & Sahn Xill

Mira Cullous      Nel Phelia

Team JSMN and LGHT
Red LGHT

While out for a usual exercise routine, this time joined by Tilki, who grumbled a bit at having his skin dry out in the cold, Lauren heard some voices coming from the hangar not far from where they were. They were voices that the two recognized, that of a certain spider Faunus and that of an owl Faunus. She knew the duo from Team JSMN, and what they were arguing about certainly warranted a visit. The pair ventured downwards to the hangar, dressed in coats and scarves. After seeing that the hangar was devoid of security staff, which is how Jairo and Mira must have gotten in, Lauren and Tilki burst into the hangar, immediately seeing Nel.

Friendly enough, Lauren called out to the hawk faunus and said, "Hey, Nel, fancy catching you here! Uh, what are you guys doing at a hangar, in the middle of winter?" As soon as Nel had noticed her, the girl had quickly gotten away from sight, quite suspiciously. Lauren narrowed her eyes.

Turning to his fellow dolphin Faunus, Tilki whispered, "This is quite suspicious. C'mon, let's check it out."

--------

"Uhh, guys- I think we have a problem."

All three of her teammates turned to face Nel. "Dammit, what is it?" Jairo hissed, giving Mira a final quick glance before turning towards Nel.

"There's... people. I think they heard us talking." the hawk girl said, fidgeting around anxiously. "What should we do?"

Jairo sighed in frustration. It was too late for them to stop the plan now. Their best bet was to either take out the witnesses somehow, or to just make a run for it. Stealth was off the the table now - they'd been spotted, and any other form of conflict would just create more noise and attract more attention to the hangar. On top of that, any use of Dreadsong to repel them back would probably attract too much attention as well.

Before the spider faunus could say anything, Mira spoke up to the team. "Nel, get the airship started- Sahn, you help her out and make sure they don't get in. We'll deal with the situation." she said, looking at Jairo. "I'm team leader for a reason."

Seeing the team lingering around the airship, Lauren and Tilki got visual confirmation of the entire team. In a faux cheery tone, Tilki drawled, "Hey guys, what's up? Need some help?" Tilki crossed his arms and eyed the team.

Jairo grimaced, two of his arms crossed, the other two ready to reach for his weapon. "No thanks, we're all good." he said slowly, squinting at the fox. He shot Mira a knowing glance.

Lauren quipped, a playful smirk on her face, "Surely you could use our help, working all alone in the middle of winter."

Mira sighed, closing her eyes slowly. "Listen, you two have no business in this- don't get yourselves involved. ...Lauren, is it?" she asked, pointing at the dolphin faunus.

"Yup. That's me."

Jairo raised an eyebrow. "Wait a sec... You're that fishhead chick, ain't you?" he said, a scowl growing on his face. "You're the one who defended that blasted human from death back at the island!"

Mira raised her hand, motioning for him to stop. "Jairo, I don't think this is the time for this."

Tensing, Lauren replied, measuring her words, "Yes, I was the one who stuck up for him. Is there a problem?" She asked the question in a more deadpan tone.

"Problem is..." Jairo began, pulling out his weapon and taking a step towards the two faunus, "...that you're givin' me more and more reasons to put you in the bloody ground right now. Stop stickin' your arses into our business and get out." He was suddenly stopped by Mira, who stepped in front of him.

"Guys, let's not start a fight around here. We're not doing anything that you two should concern yourselves with, so don't worry about it-"

"Mira! Jairo! ship's be ready in a moment, just hang tight!" Nel's voice suddenly called from the front of the hangar.

"-crap." Mira cursed under her breath.

hangar-37-saul-espinosa.jpg

That certainly was problematic. Dropping all semblances of cheeriness, Lauren glared at Jairo as she spoke, "A ship?" The pair headed deeper in the hangar, to where they had heard Nel's voice. Indeed, there was a ship, and it seemed that it'd be primed for stealing, based on Nel's comments and Mira and Jairo wanting to divert their attention. Moments later, the two reappeared in front of them, weapons drawn.

"Okay, this is your last chance to leave quietly and peacefully. We really don't want to fight you guys." Mira spoke seriously.

"Speak for yourself." Jairo spat.

Lauren replied, "We can't let you do this. I guess you'll just have to fight us. I don't want it to be this way, but if you're so resolute on going through with this..." Lauren pinned the two with a water jet, hoping to get over to the airship before they did. Before the water could slam them to the ground, Mira's eyes suddenly turned blue, covering it in a faint blue aura. With a single command of her arm, the water shot back in a straight line at Lauren, who deflected it away with her trident.

Wasting no time, Jairo raised his violin and loaded it with a web canister, firing the net at Tilki before firing a second one at the fox's teammate. Lauren flung the web away with her trident and erected a pillar of ice to shield themselves from other blows before continuing onwards to the ship. She immediately transformed her trident into a shotgun and from behind the pillar began shooting Dust rounds in their direction. Wishing to put more distance between them and Jairo and Mira, Tilki and Lauren stopped to pin them down long enough to make their own dash to the ship.

Under fire from the enemy, Jairo and Mira quickly rolled out of the way and took cover behind a stationary airship. Quickly firing a few rounds to test the durability of the ice, Mira ducked back behind cover. "Alright, I have a plan. That ice is stronger than normal, but you'd be able to smash it with your semblance. As soon as it's cracked, I'll cover you, and you engage Lauren. I'll go for the fox boy, and we keep them distracted long enough for Nel and Sahn to get done with the airship." she instructed.

"That plan doesn't sound half bad." Jairo nodded, smirking. "Let's get going!" He quickly rolled out of cover, 2 arms holding the violin behind his back, and throwing down a smoke canister with the other. Quickly, a fast-paced, repetitive tune began to play from the violin, gradually picking up in speed as it went. In a matter of seconds, the ice pillar smashed into bits, revealing the two faunus behind it. As soon as she heard it breaking, Mira's eyes turned blue, and with a wave of her hand Jairo found himself encased in a blue shield-like barrier. "You're covered, go!" she called out to him. Leaping out of the smoke, Jairo dashed headfirst into Lauren, his violin's bow having been changed into a pair of daggers. Mira followed behind, firing multiple blasts from her staff in Tilki's direction.

With the blow having more power than she thought, Lauren stumbled a bit backwards but held her balance. Keeping the daggers in mind, she wrested the small spider faunus off of her and quipped to her attacker, "So that violin wasn't just for show." Struggling with Jairo, she managed to pin him down with her trident at the ready. Meanwhile, as Tilki had glanced off the first few shots, one of the blasts made its mark, knocking the smaller fox faunus backwards a considerable distance. From here, Lauren was conflicted on whether to keep Jairo pinned or to help out Tilki. She made her decision and shot a water jet at Mira and froze it.

"Agh!" the owl faunus turned just in time to see the large icicle slam right into her, knocking her head against the airship behind her in a resounding gong. As she staggered, clutching her head in pain, Jairo quickly hopped back to his feet. He fired another web canister at Lauren, this time at her feet, in an attempt to stop her movement. Backing up the shot with some cover fire, he briefly turned in the direction of the airship. Dammit, how long are they taking?! he thought, gritting his teeth.

The canister that was fired at Lauren tripped her and made her stumble onto the ground. When she whirled around to face Jairo, she saw nothing but rage and hatred, just like before. Taking a page from Archer's book of disarmament, she called out to Jairo, "Is this really what you want? Why even do this?"

The spider faunus unsheathed his daggers before lunging at his opponent. Lauren quickly blocked it with her trident however, knocking back Jairo a few feet away. "I'm telling you why I'm doing this- I'm gettin' payback! On behalf of every coward on this island who just accepts oppression!"

Putting on a more solemn, serious look, his taller opponent rose up and thrust the trident, which was also blocked with slightly trembling daggers, sensing the rage behind the block. "Do you think I want this either? Of course I hate the oppression. But this is not the way to do it. Your lust for bloodshed is just going to make things worse! They already think of us as violent and you are just gonna escalate things and feed right into their propaganda. Does that sound fair?" She looked at him directly in the eyes.

Grunting, Jairo pushed back the trident with daggers, attempting to attack her from the sides, but getting once again blocked by Lauren's blade. "Well, if they think of us as monsters regardless, we might as well give 'em a bloody reason, eh?" he hissed, a smirk growing on his face. "And while you sit here and die like livestock, I'll be out there doing to those humans what they've done to us, on behalf of those like you."

Pressing the daggers closer to Jairo, she replied, a heaviness laden in her voice, "Just because humans have wronged us does not mean we sink to their level and become the very monster we fight against. Trust me, I'd know."

Unable to retort, Jairo simply cursed under his breath, struggling against the clearly much stronger faunus. Pulling out a smoke canister from his pack with one his spare arms, he flicked it open, before tossing down her shirt, and through the zipline on her windbreaker. Coughing and disorientated from the surprise smoke canister, she had to stop her pinning strike and toss the smoke canister somewhere else. This was enough time, however, for Jairo to gain a lead in their scuffle.

After getting over to the airship, Tilki squared off against Mira, wasting no time in making things confusing. Suddenly, Mira was looking at another version of herself. "Wait, wha...?" she muttered, lowering her guard in confusion as she stared at the mirror image. Tilki used her confusion to his advantage, slamming his flute across her head, knocking her backwards. With a smirk, 'Mira' changed back to Tilki, tensing for her next move.

Suddenly catching on to what the fox faunus' shtick was, Mira took a few step back, clutching her aching head. She couldn't use her semblance with a headache like this- melee combat was the only option. With a quick snap of her weapon, Mira's staff shifted into its alternate form- a sword and shield. She ran straight at Tilki, ready to slam down her blade onto her opponent. Tilki promptly responded to the charge with a flourish of his right arm and the sudden appearance of a katar in Tilki's hand. Ornately decorated and gleaming, the fox faunus remarked, "Pretty, is it not?" before taking the katar and sideswiping the blow. His opponent, quickly turning around raising her shield to stop the attack, countered with her sword. The two blades clashed against each other, with Mira's unrelenting attacks constantly being blocked by the nimble fox. Almost as if the encounter were an entire dance or something of that nature, Tilki spun around in a circle, before giving one last thrust towards the owl faunus.

Mira grunted, slightly knocked back as she raised her shield to stop the blow. Before she could retaliate, Nel's voice called out to them from the airship. "We're all clear, hop on, quick!"

"About time!" Mira replied. Now free of her headache, she concentrated her semblance and lowered her shield. After a brief moment, Tilki was violently thrown to the side. The owl faunus quickly shifted her sword and shield back into her staff, letting go of it in midair and hopping on top as if it was a chair. "Let's hope this works..." she muttered, bracing herself as she put her weight on the staff. To her surprise (and relief) the weapon held, and staggered momentarily as it hovered in midair, before dashing forward towards Lauren and Jairo - the latter of which had found himself in a rather tight spot.

"Jairo! Grab on!" Mira called out, extending her hand and holding on to the staff with the other as it approached the two faunus.

Jairo briefly looked up at Lauren, gritting his teeth. "That's my cue to go." he said, before sliding underneath the taller girl's legs and grabbing Mira's hand.

"Start closing the hatch!" Mira called, pulling Jairo up onto the hover-staff. Gotta make this thing go faster...

Wasting no time in pursuing the two members of JSMN, Lauren rocketed forward with jets of water to propel her forward, bridging the distance between them. As she got closer and closer, the ship gained more and more speed and altitude, starting to fly away from Lauren's grasp as the two other faunus flew inside.

As the ship began to take off, Lauren began slowing her descent, running out of height for her waterspout to draw power from. With the ship just in range of another attack, Lauren twisted around and redirected the water at the ship's four engines. She missed one of the engines, however, and the ship continued its course.

As the dolphin faunus descended from her position in the air, she arced her arms in front of her to prepare for the dive. Although the water was very cold, her cold tolerance she inherited from her father and ability to warm the water made the landing more comfortable even from the height she was at. With a big splash, Lauren was in the ocean, wet, but relatively warm. They had gotten away.

Team NAVF - ...

"Hrah!"

"Hng!"

"Rah!"

Another training bot went down, the scythe as sharp as ever. More surrounded Amane with their guns at the ready. She smirked as a quiet slice was heard. All the bots went down as they were cut in half. The two katanas in the air slowly spun around Amane as she scoffed at the bots. "I'm getting too used to this training." She focused her energy to dissipate the katanas, vanishing them slowly. With just her scythe, she walked out of the training room & out into the cold winter. "I could use some coffee after that. Oh, & a cinnamon roll. They better have strawberry in it this time."

In the quiet cafe of scented coffee & snacks, Amane sat down with a coffee cup in one hand &, for once, a cinnamon roll filled with strawberry on her small plate. "Hmph, I guess I finally convinced them what they should have on their menu. As it should be." She gloated, taking a bite out of her snack. Three months of training, & she seems to be learning what she can do. Soon, everyone will acknowledge her strength. She'll rise up & conquer all of her opponents! No one will stand on her-

"Kyaaa!!" That pierced something in Amane's ear. That scream came from inside the cafe Amane was in. More than one girl screamed, actually. She looked over at another table & found a crowd of girls surrounding a table. "You're so amazing!"

"Can I get your autograph!"

"I can't believe you're actually here!"

Must be someone famous if they're getting all this attention. Staying put in her seat, Amane tried to get a closer look at the table, curious who was even sitting there. Then she saw him.

Spoiler:
"I'm thankful to have such adoring fans, but please, I'm enjoying a pleasant day with my sweets." He spoke to the fan girls. They all swooned at him, except for Amane. She just sat there, staring at him from afar.

"Paige, please sign my weapon!"

"Paige, please sign my face!"

"Paige, marry me!"

Everyone was showing their love & affection for the guy, who merely smiled at them all & did the best he could to quell their excitement. He soon eyed Amane from his table, & a struck of realization hit him in his skull. He smiled & stood up. Amane got the chills as he walked over to him. "& what might you be doing, away from this crowd of fans." Amane didn't speak, just stared at him with caution. "Do you like the frost cakes they have here? They're simply delectable." He attempted to strike a conversation with her. His fan girls were already giving Amane the jealous eyes.

"Th-they are..." Amane quietly answered, keeping eye contact with him.

The man placed his hands in his pockets, smiling genuinely. "My name is Paige Brooke. Of course, you may have heard of me from my achievements I assume."

"Y-yeah..."

"Tell me, what is your name?"

"...Amane."

"Amane. I do hope we meet again, but I must attend to some matters. I bid you good day." He bowed down to Amane & started walking out the cafe, his adoring fans following him from behind, some giving Amane a glare.

Once the cafe was finally quiet, Amane slumped down on her chair. She was sweating beads, an expression of fear across her face.

"He's here he's here he's here. Why is he here? I thought I was rid of him. Oh god, it's happening all over again. I don't want to go through it all again..."

She just sat there, many thoughts crossing her mind, each making her more frightened than the last.

Grimm walk among us!

A Bogeyman Grimm has been reported in the Atlas region! Since its first confirmed sighting last week, three missing children cases have already been attributed to it, and it is managing to shake all the combined efforts of Grimm-hunting teams PRPL and CNDR, and PRPL's Lucy Restunisser has yet to awaken from her critical state.

PRPL's leader Poggler Unf had this to say: "Lucy's no student and ought to know how to take on a Bogeyman, and given what happened to her and how little any of us can turn up on it, I'm afraid we have to face facts. Cody over at CNDR agrees with me and I hate to bear bad news, but this probably isn't a Bogeyman. We think we're dealing with a Dracruela."

Citizens of Atlas have been advised to avoid going out of doors after sundown and to travel in large groups. Atlas has requested aid from other kingdoms' teams in combatting the possibility of an S-rank Grimm within its borders, but with all student teams dismissed patrol duties for winter break, it is yet to be seen how this help may be spared.

Archer and Nilya
"We are not Grimm. We have the souls and mental capacity to choose whether or not to become monsters." - Nilya

"Make sure to take these eyedrops Nina." Archer stressed, putting a bottle in her bag.

"Yes Archer, I'll make sure to put the eyedrops in, just like I've been doing for the last month." Nina retorted, "Why did you give me four bottles?" Her grey, mechanical eyes shifted from her bag to Archer.

"You guys are going to be gone for a while, I don't know when the next time I'll see you will be, so I have to make sure you're prepared."

Nina rolled her eyes, "You're like a mom. We'll be okay Archer, you're the only one who ever comes back in pieces."

"Hey! I'm a lot stronger now, I almost beat Ilexa in an arm wrestling match."

"Yeah, you told me to use my left hand, and then challenged me ten times." Ilexa replied, "I'll admit that you're probably as strong as I was three months ago, but you are definitely not as strong as me now."

Gaige chimed in, "What's your current limit for your semblance? Has it been easier to control?"

Archer nodded, "I can tolerate about twenty times more force on myself than normal, and I've been able to get myself about fifteen times lighter. Flying is a lot easier, but I'm still having trouble controlling myself in high stress situations."

"Hate to say it, but you're probably stuck with that flaw. You can't give up emotion, and your semblance is definitely tied to it." Gaige said, reading through a journal, "Knowing that, you really think you can go through with the plan?"

Archer slipped on his winter coat with a smile, "If there's a war, a lot of people will die, so at least I could try to do something." Nina helped him put his scarf on, "Be safe guys, I'll see you at the meet-up point."

After a nice cup of hot chocolate and a small idle chat with Fei, Nilya headed out into the cold. She finally found a good spot on the outskirts of Beacon's grounds on the edge of a forest. Pulling out her blade, Nilya started to channel her semblance around the energy converter on the back of the sword. The converter had once been the device that sent energy currents down the edge when Varik wielded the weapon, but he had modified it for Nilya's use.

The faunus could feel her dark semblance being changed by the device. It was strange for her as it was her power, but at the same time felt alien. The energy looked like black flames that surging around the blade's edge as she made a quick upward slashing motion, while pressing a hidden switch that deactivated the blade's ability to hold the energy in place. The result was a wave of dark energy surged from the blade that flew forward until it impacted a tree. The energy left a large gash where the energy struck.

Nilya then positioned herself in a fighting stance after the quick warm up, but before she could start her keen ears picked up the sound of snow being compressed under someone's boot. Turning around she spotted a somewhat familiar human approaching her. The faunus dropped her guard as she watched him approach. Looking at Archer with a faux smile she asked, "What brings you out into the cold this evening?"

Archer returned with a genuine smile, "Winter is my favorite season. I love the white snow, and the cold air is always pleasant. That black flame was such a beautiful contrast, I had to see who was creating it." Archer walked up to the tree and touched where she burned it, "You've gotten a new skill over the last three months, how nice."

When Archer touched the cut mark in the tree he noticed there were no signs of charring or ash. The section of the tree was merely gone, and no evidence of what might have happened to it remained. "It was not a flame, and it is not really an ability. Varik adjusted one of his inventions to convert energy from my semblance into an attack. You will need to ask him for any details about how it works," replied Nilya with a warm tone of voice as she looked over at the setting sun.

Nilya slowly slipped the blade back in its sheath as she asked in friendly tone, "How have you been doing? Staying out of trouble I hope."

Archer laughed, "I honestly wish I could say I am." He put his hand in his coat pocket and shrugged, "If anything I'm probably only digging myself deeper."

Nilya looked back at Archer as her smile faded a little as she spoke, "What trouble are you getting into now?"

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you about the missions we did over the last three months." Archer started, "I thought I'd keep you out of it after you helped me get those faunus here."

"What missions?" replied Nilya as she watched the human's every move with interest.

"Perhaps I didn't tell you." Archer said, "The reason the faunus were sent here was to do various things under a faunus teacher's discretion. At first it was things like breaking faunus out of prison, but she began to give a lot more, malicious, tasks." Archer looked at Nilya, "There's a war coming soon, did you know that?"

"Yes," replied Nilya in a neutral tone. She was quiet for a second before asking, "And you want to stop it from happening?"

"I don't think there's much I can do to stop it." Archer replied, "Even if I was the strongest person in the world, it isn't something that would be possible, but I do plan to diminish the war, and maybe end it early."

"How do you plan to do that?" asked Nilya raising an eyebrow.

"I want to tell you, but I'm not sure if you'd be in on it." Archer said, "And I wouldn't want you ripping my head off."

Nilya stared at Archer with an annoyed look for a second before saying, "Considering how poorly your last few plans worked out I am now concerned you are about to do more harm than good." Nilya reached up and rubbed her forehead before adding, "What is your plan Archer? I promise not to kill you unless it involves killing Varik, Fei, Amane, or any of my family…"

Archer laughed, "I'm not going to hurt anyone you know." Archer sighed, "But I really am going to do some bad things. If I can get humans and faunus to redirect their hate a little bit, it might be easier to get this war to end."

Nilya sighed and shook her head as she gathered her thoughts. "Archer as noble as your plan is I doubt it will work. In fact, most likely whatever you are planning will only make things worse." Nilya walked up to Archer and placed a hand on his shoulder, "You cannot become a monster big enough to distract the faunus, much less the humans. How will another human monster help the faunus? How will it help your kind? Hate will not dissolve hate, and this world is filled with enough pain as is."

Nilya looked into his eyes and said, "What the world does need is hope. Good men and women from both races who will set their differences aside to build a better future. I hate to say this, but as a human you lack a true understanding of the faunus side of this conflict. The best thing you can do for my kind is try to open the eyes of humanity to see us as your equals and realise how your actions have hurt us. Please do not become another monster."

"The root of humanity is violence, just like any other animal." Archer responded seriously, "We don't find any type of comradery unless there is something to be against. Humans, Faunus, at heart, we will always be but monsters."

Nilya dropped her hand from his shoulder with a frown, "We are not Grimm. We have the souls and mental capacity to choose whether or not to become monsters. We have a choice. Yes, we might be drawn toward that barbaric nature, but we can choose a higher path.

Shaking her head Nilya looked up at the darkening skies asked, "Archer do you really think you can become a monster so threatening that you can shift all the hate generated by the collected pain and suffering of my kind away from our oppressors and onto you?"

"No, not at all." He replied, "But I'm not the only person who's doing this. Honestly, I do kind of want you and Varik to help on this one. If you think there's a peaceful way I really hope you can succeed with it, but there's already been so much violence, I'm absolutely positive there will only be more violence."

Nilya continued to stare up at the sky and said, "I fear the time of peace has past…" She stopped talking for a second before looking down at Archer and asked, "What do you need our help for?"

"Your semblance would make it a lot easier to make things look worse than they are." Archer stated, "And it would help to be able to have more people on my side."

"Archer I am not going to help you unless I know what your plan is and what you need me and Varik for, " replied Nilya looking back down at Archer.

"Fair enough." Archer said, handing her a small book, "This has pretty much everything. I've been using it to remind me, but I think of it so much, it's branded onto my mind." The journal had no names, but did have aliases for each person involved, and detailed everything Archer had spoken with his team about. "I give that to you in good faith. Oh, and don't tell Fei or Lauren about any of this. I know they wouldn't like it."

Nilya started reading the journal through and did not initially respond to Archer. It was an awkward several minutes as Nilya read in silence before she closed it and looked up at Archer with a frown, "I will not tell Fei, nor will I tell Lauren, granted I have not talked to her since that day in the tent so you have nothing to worry about there." Opening the book again for a second Nilya suddenly asked, "Do you want my honest opinion of this plan?"

"Feel free to share your thoughts." Archer said, "But please keep the book, I was informed by Isa that I'm due for an audience with the faunus."

"Sorry Archer this plan will not work. For the human side of things it might, but your lack of understanding of the faunus side is clear from what you wrote here. If your other faunus "allies" helped you with this it is only because it will weaken the human's ability to fight in the war, and will have a minimal impact on the faunus' ability to fight. From a faunus perspective, you are more likely to kick off the war with this plan than prevent or slow it," replied Nilya in calm collected tone.

"Now if you want to do something to help… I have an idea, but it lacks the martyrdom you seem fond of," replied Nilya casually. She guessed Archer would dislike her plan as much as she disliked his.

"I'm all ears." Archer replied, checking the time, "I'm just killing time for now."

Nilya slipped the journal into a small pouch on her belt as she spoke, "To create a haven for both humans and faunus to escape the war. A place for members from both races to survive and hopefully create the seeds of peace and cooperation that will help end the war, or at least shape the world after the war."

"I honestly don't think I can create something like that." Archer said sadly, "I don't have the place to do such a thing, and I feel like it would not last long." He sighed solemnly, "To be honest, I don't think I'd deserve a spot in such a place, though I really do wish a place like that existed."

"It is not something any one of us can create, but if enough of us come together it becomes possible. We would have to create a place in the wilderness… far enough away from the conflict to not get caught in the middle of it. However that means we will need good hunters and weapons for any Grimm issues," said Nilya. "We already have several hunters in the form of NAVF, Lauren's team, and could add yours. If you can convince your father, who is a teacher here to help, that would help with future hunter training."

Nilya stopped for a moment then looked into Archer's eyes again, "You get the idea… No one is a singular hero, and it does not stop the war. However it can start the healing process and builds the idea of cooperation between races. Archer, you need to stop beating yourself up. We have all made mistakes, but we cannot let those mistakes define our future and hold us back. We need to learn from them and continue forward. Do not let your self loathing turn you into a monster."

"I can't run away like that." Archer replied, "Even if heroes can't exist, I can't leave everyone on that island, and we certainly can't take everyone there with us." Archer began to shake, "You don't want my dad involved in this either. He let them put Lull in prison for something he told her to do." Archer began to feel heavy, as he thought about everything, "They have her in a concrete cell, and…" Archer became more and more emotional as he spoke, and the tree next to him cracked under the weight, snapping him back into reality. He took a deep breath, letting himself calm down, "Maybe it's too late to stop being a monster." Archer said somberly. "If you find yourself pursuing such a place, I can offer you some help, but only a little."

Nilya frowned and softly spoke, "It is not too late… You just need to see that. Before you commit this act, think of all the people you will be hurting. Those you are dragging into this, those who have stuck up for you, and those who care about you. Your intentions are good, but you are going about it the wrong way. I have noticed that you like to pretend that you can take all the pain, guilt, and repercussions on yourself. That as long as you suffer, no one else has to, but that is a lie. You will hurt those close to you with these actions. Beware the tyranny of good intentions Archer. I almost lost the most important person in my life to them."

Nilya noted the emotion displayed about this Lull character so she added, "If you ever want to help free Lull let me know." The cold wind whipped around the two as they spoke.

"I already know I'll never be the only one to suffer." Archer said, "I'm not doing this to stop anyone's pain, I'm doing it because…" He frowned, "Perhaps the wrong people are suffering." Archer bowed his head slightly, "Thank you for speaking with me." He said, beginning to turn around, "Oh, don't worry about Lull, she's my problem, if you were to help, she'd try to kill you."

Nilya rolled her eyes at Archer and suddenly started to twist the darkness around her with her semblance. A few seconds later a perfect illusion of Archer appeared in front of the human. "Not sure if you are full of yourself, a control freak, or just hate getting help, but you should not dismiss others help without knowing the extent of their abilities," said the illusion in Archer's own voice.

Behind Archer came Nilya's voice from the darkness, "You are set on this plan because you want to feel like you are doing something that will have a large impact. Deep down do you really care if you succeed? I am beginning to wonder if this whole stunt is more about you feeling good about "doing something" than actually helping anyone. If you fail you want to be able to say "I tried to stop this" and stand on some false sense of moral high ground." Her voice lacked a body as it spoke.

Then the illusion spoke once again, "You ignored the suffering of the faunus until now. So I dare you to look into your own heart and ask yourself: is your plan really you trying to end your own suffering, or end the suffering of others? So which is better? You fail and only hurt those around you but help your own sense of morality? Or helping one suffering individual with kindness and support?"

Suddenly the illusion shifted and an image of Lauren appeared. It was not as perfect as the illusion of Archer, but it was very close. "Archer will you help me? Or yourself?" Asked the false Lauren as the image held out her hand to Archer as if to ask for his help...

Archer frowned, "Saving one life will never be enough, even if that life is incredibly important to me. I did ignore their, no, your suffering, and what kind of person has that made? I'm not doing this to have the moral high ground, I don't care about who is good and bad here. I'm doing this because I want power. I want to take it from the people who have it, and give it to those who don't, and when I have that power, then I'll stop failing." Archer walked through the illusion, "If I fail, I'll be the same monster I would be if I succeed." As he walked he called back, "Feel free to demonize me to Lauren, she doesn't deserve to be in this war anyways." As he walked, the trees slightly bent down towards him, dropping snow from their dead branches.

Nilya lay an invisible hand on Archer's back as she whispered in a somber tone, "To that one life it will mean more than you can imagine. Often it is the smallest of acts that can change the course of history." dropping her hand from Archer's back Nilya dismissed her illusion and began to walk off. "Call when you want my help, for now my team and husband need my attention," said the faunus as she walked back to Beacon.

Terror on the high seas! Lookouts are reporting a sharp spike in marine Grimm activity, and multiple ferries are reporting coming under attack by large Grimm parties. Thus far no ferries are encountering problems that can't be handled by their escorts, but further ferries are being put on delay as lookouts report a Leviathan heading for the Vacuo coastline.

Coastal residents are advised to evacuate inland until the threat has passed, and teams BOOM, DIRJ, KRAK, VNLA, COCO, GRIM, YLLO, and FLNT have been sent to points along the coast to repel the threat.

We managed to speak with the leader of Team BOOM, Buster Rah on the matter. "For those who haven't been keeping up on their Grimm classification classes, the Leviathan is an S-rank Grimm and is the single-largest marine Grimm species on record. Most of the time, marine Grimm can run before we kill them, and this will likely be no different. We're just hoping to turn it away from anywhere it could do too much damage. Hey, with any luck, we can get it pointed at Menagerie and let the Faunus finish it off. Or maybe it'll kill all the Faunus for us. Either way we're short one more problem."

Jairo & Sahn Xill

Mira Cullous      Nel Phelia

Team JSMN
Air Turbulence

"Ugh..." Mira grunted, rubbing the side of her head as she sat up in the airship. "Sorry about that. Not so great on stopping vectors after starting them up..."

Jairo cracked his neck, still shaky from the little escapade the duo had just had. "Yeah, yeah... I'll admit, that was bloody good." he smirked, sheathing his weapon. A large clang sounded at the back of the airship as Sahn secured the final lock on the door.

"All good. You two alright?" she asked.

"All -good- here," Mira groaned, standing up and picking up her weapon. "Where's Nel?"

"Here I am~" Nel essentially sang out from the ship's cockpit. The girl gave a quick spin of the airship's wheel, causing it to turn quite sharply. The two spider siblings and Mira were almost sent flying across the ship from the impact of the turn. "I haven't done this in a while... so I'm just kinda wingin' it right now, you know?!"

Before Jairo could spit a curse back at her, a loud, cracking pop noise sounded from beneath all four passengers' feet - shaking the airship even more than Nel's little twist-and-turn game. After a few seconds however, the rumbling stopped abruptly.

"Crap, did they hit us on our way out?" Jairo asked, turning to Sahn. "Because I swear if that birdbrain just cost us our plane ticket home I'm-"

"Let's hope it's neither, and just some air turbulence." Mira interrupted. "And Nel, please keep the games for when we don't actually need the plane!" she called out to the cockpit.

"Right, right... But we need something to keep us entertained. We got a long way to go, you know?" Nel called back. "I know, we could try that mile-high club thing!"

The owl faunus' face instantly turned red as Jairo tried his best to retain his laughter, the two gathering confused looks from Sahn. "N-nel, please just focus on the flying...?" Mira uttered, patting down her clothes nervously. "We- we've got a long way to go, so let's take turns handling the controls."

Wiping away the tears of laughter off his eyes, Jairo snickered one more time. "Y'know, for all the silk you talked about not comin' along... I knew you would." he said, taking a seat on an upturned weapons box.

Mira sighed, glancing briefly at Sahn before sitting herself. "Truth is... I haven't heard from my sister in months. For all I know, her radio could be broken, or she could've been caught, or-" she stopped at the last moment, the words unable to escape her mouth. "I just...Want to find her. It doesn't matter if I'm safe anymore, I just want to find her."

"Don't worry! As long as you don't think she's dead, then there will always be that ghost of a chance you'll find her!" Nel chipped in, a wide grin gracing her lips. "Do you have any actual idea where she actually is supposed to be there?"

"Last I heard of her, she was at some kind of... makeshift faunus settlement. She told me she'd be safe there. It's just that..." Mira stopped to recollect herself, and took a deep breath. "It will be fine. We just keep moving."

The group kept flying for sometime. After about an hour or so, Mira decided to relieve Nel of flying the airship so that the hawk Faunus could have herself a small break. Nel had no issues with this, the girl practically skipping to the seats where Jairo and Sahn were sitting while humming. Nel was quick to hop over the back of one of the empty seats, flopping down into the cushion with a grin.

"What's up, you two?" Nel asked quickly. "I know we're flying, but there's no need for both of you to have your heads in the clouds, yeah?"

Sahn momentarily raised a finger, signalling her to wait. Putting her hand in front of Jairo, she snapped her fingers tentatively. The diminutive spider faunus gave no reaction, instead slumping over to the side, drooling in his sleep.

"Right, he's sleeping. Just wanted to make sure, he gets mad if you wake him up." his sister responded calmly, shrugging. After a few moments of silence from both teammates, she continued. "Y'know, he never told me how he managed to get you to follow him."

"Oh... We just had a nice chat after that little incident with that snake guy I fought in our first class..." Nel explained. A slightly distant look graced her features, followed by a small smile tugging at her lips. "...I never did find out what happened to him after that..."

As if suddenly waking up from a dream, the hawk faunus shook her head and returned her attention to Sahn. "Anyways... He came to see me after I ended up in the infirmary for a while. We got to talking, and he sort of ended up finding about my mom. He did some... weird thing with his violin, and... well, next thing I know I was telling him all about it and how I never got to avenge her or anything like that. So... he basically convinced me to use this whole trip to do that."

Sahn furrowed her brow slightly, briefly glaring at her sleeping brother before shaking her head. "I'm sorry he had you go through that. So you're mom's, ah...?" she hesitated. "You probably don't want to talk about it. Sorry."

Nel shrugged. "She's dead. Not like keeping quiet about it is gonna make it all better, you know?"

"Huh. Guess that makes three of us." Sahn replied. "So that's how he convinced you? Revenge?" She raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah..." Nel replied. "I was just a kid when it happened. Couldn't really do much about it back then. Done in by a human in the middle of the night... She really couldn't do much about it either." She paused again, turning to glance out the window of the ship. Her lips twitched ever so slightly. "...There was so much blood..."

Sahn winced. "That... must've been horrible. You shouldn't keep things like that bottled up, you know."

"Why...? You think I might pop?" Nel questioned, a familiar grin returning to her lips.

Sahn smiled, merely shaking her head at the comment. "Get some sleep. Like Mira said, trip's gonna take a while, so get rest while you can."

--------------

Nel felt herself being slightly shaken awake. Sahn stood over her, frowning as she looked back at the cockpit. "Nel, get up. We've got a problem."

Nel let out a somewhat noisy yawn, her eyes still half closed and groggy with sleep. "Just use the plunger and pull it out... Jairo needs more fiber..."

"Crap, crap, crap..." Mira cursed under her breath, panicking as the various ship controls in front of her flashed and a loud beeping alarm sounded. She desperately tried every switch and button on the panel, but with no response - none of them seemed to work any more. An equally panicked Jairo was next to her, his head buried inside the fuse box under the controls.

"Dammit, Sahn, get birdbrain's arse over here!" he yelled, glancing at his sister. Sahn sighed, and lifted Nel up by the shoulders before plopping her up onto her legs. Positioning both her hands at the side of her ears, she snapped her fingers.

Nel's eyes snapped open all the way, the hawk faunus looking around in confusion before flashing Sahn a bright smile. "Hiya! What's up? You know, besides us?"

"We won't be for much longer if this goes on." Mira replied. "Can you come over here and take over the controls? I need to check what's wrong the engines."

Nel made her way into the cockpit of the airship, watching curiously at the situation unfolding before her. "No need to get your wires crossed... But do you even know how to check them?" The shorter of the two bird faunus took the controls, glancing over in Mira's direction as she continued. Her voice was surprisingly relaxed despite the panic her three teammates were in. " I mean, the only reason you know how to fly is based on what I learned from that old pilot... And I never got the chance to ask about proper maintenance before we got tossed out from his ship."

Before the owl faunus could respond, the airship gave a violent lurch as all the lights powered out, throwing all four members of JSMN forward and slamming them against the windshield, and sending the plane barreling towards the freezing ocean below.

NAVF - Seeds of Doubt

Nilya walked down an empty hallway of beacon heading to the room NAVF "shared." Most of the last three months she and Varik had found other places to sleep out of respect of their other team members, mostly Amane. The faunus in hiding was not smiling as her mind wrapped itself around the escalating conflict between faunus and humans. Pulling out her scroll from her winter outer wear, she quickly wrote a simple message to her husband that said:
'Please hurry, I need your arms around me.'

Putting her scroll on idle mode she started to put it away. She then realized she was no longer alone in the hallway.

A group of girls were following a man in a white suit down the hallway, trying to speak with him. "Paige! Paige!" They squealed out to him. Paige felt his energy drain bit by bit at the hands of these fangirls, but he kept smiling nonetheless.

"I'm flattered really. I have somewhere I would like to go, please." They wouldn't give him room to keep walking, but he wasn't being too overwhelmed. With a group this big, it was difficult for anyone to get through the hallway.

Nilya looked up to see the boy and his fan club approaching. Nilya quickly moved to the right side of the hall and pushed her back to the wall so the group could pass her without too much effort. The faunus glanced at the man leading the group wondering why he had such a following.

Paige was looking around at his fanclub. Many of them just wouldn't give him some space, but that's understandable. He saw some other girl who seemed a bit separated from the rest of his fanclub. Pushing past his fans, he approaches Nilya with the girls right behind him. "I'm very sorry. I must be getting in your way." He tried apologizing to her, dusting himself a bit.

"It is fine, no harm was done," replied Nilya with a smile. Seeing a gap in the girls, Nilya started moving toward the opening while saying, "Nice to meet you Paige, but I have had a long day and need rest."

These girls blurting out his name, anyone would be aware of his name. "Please, by all means…" He moved aside to let Nilya through, which is when he noticed the blade strapped to her. The intricate design, that energy converter. Who could've created such a masterpiece? "That blade… Tell me," he stood up, facing Nilya. "Where have you acquired such a weapon? Who is your inventor?" Some of the girls nearby were already giving Nilya the stink eye. They just remained quiet.

"Hm?" Fei, who went to NAVF's room after going to the cafe with Nilya, came out to see what the commotion was. "Eh?" What he had found was a strange sight. A bunch of students, all of them girls, were crowded together, sort of blocking the hallway. Isn't there a problem there? Fei walked out of the room to investigate, though was a bit intimidated by such a huge crowd.

"Varik built the blade," replied Nilya softly. Her escape had been blocked off by the girls who were giving her less than friendly looks. What did this guy and his fan club want with her?

Fei tried to get a better look at what these girls were here for, but that proved to be difficult.

"Fascinating…" Paige kept staring at Nilya's blade with keen interest. He stood up & dusted himself off. "Forgive me, I just get pulled in by such exquisite inventions. Please, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Paige Brooke. Tell me, who might you be?" He asked politely, smiling genuinely.

Fei kept pushing through the crowd, albeit a little uncomfortable with all these girls here. When he reached where he supposed they all came here for, he found a man in a suit & Nilya. They seemed to be speaking to each other. That's when he heard the man introduce himself. Realization crossed his face.

"Nilya Umbra," replied the faunus faking a smile. "It was nice meeting you, but I am tired from training and would like to get some rest," added Nilya not noticing Fei yet.

"AHH!!" Fei screamed out. He walked up to Paige, pointing a shaky finger at him. "I-I know you! You're Paige Brooke! Famous entrepreneur! You've helped fund so many big projects!" Paige turned towards the abrupt voice, looking at Fei. Yet another one of his fans, perhaps.

"Y-yes, I am that same Paige Brooke." Paige introduced himself to Fei. "& who might be addressing me?"

"F-Fei Zero, sir!" Fei greeted nervously, bowing suddenly.

"Nilya!" He looked at Nilya just behind Paige. "Do you know who this is?!"

"Apparently not as much as I should," replied Nilya looking over at Fei with a genuine friendly smile.

"If only Varik & Amane were here. They would be meeting someone famous right now." Fei excitedly said.

Paige eyes lit up a bit. "Did you say...Amane?" He asked Fei.

"Oh, do you know her?" Fei asked, tilting his head a bit as he looked on at Paige.

Paige turned his head to Nilya, curiosity across his face. "I've heard that name before. Tell me, are you acquainted with her in any way?" He asked her.

"She is a member of our team," replied Nilya plainly as the scroll she was still holding made a beeping sound. Nilya quickly looked at it and read the message before placing it in its case on her belt next to her sword.

"A team…" Paige muttered, a bit concerned. He looked both at Nilya & Fei, & at his fans. "There's something I need to discuss with you privately." He deliberated to Nilya & Fei, before they saw that the girls have suddenly vanished.

"Wha-" Fei was a little spooked at what just happened. Where had the girls gone?

"Stay calm. They are not gone. I am just using a Semblance that camouflages us. To them, we have merely vanished. They can't sense us in any way." He explained shortly. Looking around, they seem to be alone in the hallway. No one else was in sight besides Nilya, Fei & Paige.

"Now, to the matter of Amane. There's something you need to be aware of." Paige looked at both of them with a serious look on his face, his tone less calm. "That woman is dangerous to be around."

"...Huh?" Fei didn't quite understand what Paige meant.

Nilya looked back at Paige, her expression unchanging, as she said in a calm voice, "She definitely has her quirks. We are also in a school for hunters and huntresses so danger is a part of our job. Now why are you going through this extra effort to tell us this?"

Paige sighed. "So you don't know." He assumed.

"Know what?" Fei asked him. He was starting to get a little worried. Does he know Amane?

"She's a murderer with a streak, starting back to when she was a child."

Nilya raised her right eyebrow and asked, "So why is she free and what proof is there supporting this claim?"

"I understand if you don't believe me. I'm only trying to warn you." Paige looked around his surroundings. "They're mostly rumors, but I've seen it firsthand. If you want proof, just ask her. You will see her fidget from the subject, I'm sure."

"Uh, it's kind of hard to believe this." Fei spoke, a little down from this. "W-we've known Amane for 3 months. Sure she's a bit rough, but…"

"Even if she killed her own father?"

"..." Fei went silent. Everything went quiet.

"We will talk to her," replied Nilya her expression mostly the same. "Can I go now? I need rest," added Nilya, who started to sound a little tired.

"Just as long as you're aware. My apologies for taking your time." Paige bowed, lifting the veil surrounding them. The girls were there once again, as they never left. They were happy to see Paige again, but gave the other two the cold shoulder. "Excuse me." Paige bid Nilya & Fei a farewell & walked away, his fangirls in tow.

Fei was left with questions that could not be answered so easily. He looked over at Nilya. "She c-couldn't have...could she?"

Nilya sighed and said, "We will talk to her about it. Jumping to a hasty conclusion about Amane will not help us. We need to hear what she has to say. Even if she did it, she might have a good reason behind her actions." Nilya then turned and walked to the team's dorm room.

"..." Fei couldn't think of anything to say, just watching Nilya walk into the dorm room. She's right though. They should at least hear what Amane has to say. "S-so, I'll just be in the courtyard if you need me," Fei informed her before leaving the hallway.

The seeds of doubt have been planted. I wonder how Amane will handle it this time. Heh heh...

Spoiler:

Fire in the night claims two!

The blaze that started in downtown Vale's residential district last night has finally been stopped. The fires started in a small apartment building and quickly spread to nearby buildings with incredible speed, "too fast for normal flames," policemen say. "We suspect this was a case of pointed arson, and it's likely there may be another such attack." Though there was quite the loss of money from the fire's damage to property, only a few wounds were taken by civilians, with the exception of two fatalities, found near where the fire is thought to have started.

The bodies have been identified as those of local toymaker Waltzur Rekstum, and his wife, Myndy Rekstum. Police suspect they may have been the target of the same serial arsonist suspected to be responsible for last month's Unf case. Citizens are reminded to make sure their smoke detectors are operable, and to report any suspicious persons out afterhours.

Brooke Webster, Reese Kells, Oswald Carotene, and Salazar Jones
Faunus Academy

Winter had come to Menagerie, and most of the students at the Academy had left, leaving it empty and mostly silent. Down by the jetty, Ozzy was looking over some crates and cages. They had mostly been designed to transport food or clothes, a "gift" from the humans at Vale. Unfortunately, those were too small for this particular mission, as Ozzy was finding out.

"This box had oranges in it!" Sal angrily declared, kicking the box in frustration. He'd meant to send it flying, but he just ended up kicking a hole in the side and getting his foot stuck. A low growl started building in his chest as he raised his fist to smash the box, but Ozzy darted in to free him.

"Do I look like an orange to you, Ozzy?!" Sal growled, turning away from the crates. After a moment, his angry tone diminished to a sad one. "I wanna be on the boat with you guys! Not... stuck in the cargo hold!"

Ozzy sighed, continuing to look for a suitable box. "We've gone over this. Brooke and Reese can hide their tails, I can cover my ears, but you can't disguise your scales."

"What if I say it's a skin condition?" He sounded hopeful, but Ozzy shut him down. "Oh, don't mind our friend, he just has a rare deformity that makes his skin look like hard, green scales! But don't stare, he's self-conscious!"

Ozzy sighed, giving Sal an apologetic pat on the arm. "I'm sorry. We need at least one Faunus to get us on that boat. It's easiest if it's you, and we'll smuggle your weapons on board in another crate."

"What about that one?" Sal pointed to a solid steel container, big enough to hold an Ursa. It was missing its door, and one side lay on the ground beside it.

Ozzy hopped over to it, looking around for the door. "It'll take some fixing, but Brooke could repair it easily. It looks like it was used for hauling livestock."

"Or Grimm. Or maybe it was used to transport Faunus that didn't wanna go. Like me." Sal helpfully added. "I say it's perfect! Let's get it back to the shop!"

"You found one, then?" Asked Brooke, who called out from a large, flatbed truck she had reconstructed and modified, currently parked nearby. "Need a hand loading it up?"

Reese seemed a bit less enthusiastic about the crate than his companions, sitting on the snowy ground with a frown. "Brah, you gonna be okay? Aren't croc faunus s'posed to stay warm?"

"I can just add a heat source to the crate, or maybe even to his coat," Brooke reassured him. "As long as the humans don't notice it should be fine." Reese didn't seem entirely satisfied, but he didn't argue. Brooke could tell he was still troubled and continued. "It'd be great if we could all just bust in together, but it's the mainland and we wouldn't want to call the attention of pro huntsmen or anything like that. This is the best way." Despite her words, Brooke didn't seem satisfied either, gripping the truck's steering wheel tightly.

Sal and Reese managed to load the old crate into the bed of the truck, while Ozzy hopped into the cab with Brooke. "That should work. I feel kinda bad for him, though. We'll have to stay in character if we want to stay undetected, so he'll have to suffer for it. Unless you think one of us should be with him? We'd have to smuggle in two sets of weapons instead of just Sal's, but at least he wouldn't be alone."

Brooke sighed. "Reese would be the best option with his small equipment load, I think, but I don't know if he's capable of putting on the right attitude for a captured faunus. It'll be way too difficult hiding all of my gear, and with you... Let's just say I'm going to need your help dealing with the humans." A smile accompanied Brooke's last sentence, but it looked uncomfortable and forced.

Ozzy just nodded, tracing a finger through the dust on the dashboard. "Yeah, the plan works best if it's just him. I guess I'm just a little nervous. We've never really done a stealth job like this before, and I hate to leave behind our muscle." He jumped as a loud thunk echoed through the cab, looking up at a new dent that had appeared in the roof, roughly the size of a fist.

Sal sat next to the cage he and Reese had secured, having just thumped the roof of the truck. "We're all set back here! Whenever you guys are ready, let's pack up and roll out!"

"In that case, let's move!" Brooke shouted as she started up the truck. Before actually moving, she looked over at Ozzy, lifted an arm and flexed. "And don't worry about muscle, I've got plenty of that myself to make up for Sal." She gave him a comforting smile despite her own worries before facing the road and pressing on the gas.

The group traveled along the road toward Brooke's workshop, making their way through the woods along a dirt path she had cleared specifically for the truck. The path was long and roundabout instead of cutting straight through for reasons Brooke neglected to tell her team, but it led them to their destination all the same. Soon enough they arrived at the workshop, ever-expanding as time passed. It now looked more like a warehouse than the small shed it started out as. With Sal's help, Brooke unloaded the crate and pulled it aside to begin work on it while the others waited.

Sal looked over his gear one more time, despite the fact that he'd be carrying the least. In particular, he was looking over his new gun Brooke had built for him, a cannon the size of his arm. "My first field test of this thing, and it has to be taken away from me!" He looked around Brooke's yard, searching for a target. "Maybe I'll just get one last target session in before we go..."

Ozzy nervously stepped in front of him, nipping that particular issue in the bud. "You might want to save your ammo, big guy! Who knows what we'll encounter when we get to Vale. Just put it in the crate, and you'll get a chance to test it later. Besides, aren't you more concerned about your arm?"

Ozzy gestured to Sal's Grappling Hand, which had received some modifications after Sal's fight with the humans on Island G. Brooke had repaired the damage, as well as adding some armor plates to it. Sal scratched his head, thinking it over. He handed his gun to Reese, who staggered a bit under the unexpected weight.

"What's wrong with it? You guys aren't gonna take it too, right?" Ozzy scuffed his foot along the ground nervously, looking to Reese for help. Reese deposited Sal's cannon in the extra crate, flashing an apologetic smile.

"Well, we're supposed to be hunters, ya? And we can't exactly leave our prey with his weapons." Sal growled at the term "prey", but Reese held up his hands to stop Sal's comment. "It's either that or we break it. And I'd hate to get Brooke mad for breaking her stuff."

"HER stuff?!" Sal snarled, curling his hands into fists. "It's MY arm! And I'd like to see you try!"

Reese never dropped his smile, but he pulled his staff off his bracer, extending it to full length. "If you insist, brah. It'd make it look more authentic."

Sal growled angrily, taking a step toward Reese, but Ozzy jumped up between the two. "WAIT! Come on guys, we don't need to fight about this!"

Sal scoffed, baring his teeth at Reese. "We don't need to, but it would be fun."

Reese chuckled, but put his staff away. "It would be a nice warm up, eh?" He held up a fist, which Sal bumped with his natural fist, grinning.

Ozzy sighed in relief, shaking his head. "Why does she leave me alone with you two?" Reese had a good laugh at that, pulling Ozzy in and giving him an affectionate noogie. Ozzy had gotten used to it long ago, so just accepted it.

It was a couple hours before Brooke finally returned, the crate close behind her atop a cart. It was much cleaner and it looked like it had been reinforced significantly. Brooke explained that it had to look formidable, but that Sal would easily be able to escape from within through a mechanism hidden in the crate's floor. This same mechanism could open compartments in the crate's extra-thick walls where they could hide even Sal's equipment. She decided she didn't feel confident keeping it separate if they couldn't reliably keep track of it.

Sal approved of Brooke's idea, preferring to keep his gear close at hand. Ozzy and Reese had managed to convince him to remove his Grappling Hand, but Sal had one last caveat.

"If I have to get rid of my arm, won't it look a little strange, a one-armed Faunus?" He unlocked the mechanism keeping his arm on, twisting and removing the limb. Sure enough, there was still a metal cap on his arm where the prosthetic attached to the flesh. Sal winced as his arm separated, immediately losing all feeling in the limb.

"But, if we tie a rag on here, cover it in blood, it'll look like I lost my arm when you guys caught me! Then no one will ask questions!"

Ozzy nodded as he thought it over, looking surprised. "That's actually a clever idea, Sal." Reese held up a hand for a fist bump, which Sal returned, holding his metal arm in his left hand to do so.

"Yeah!" Sal agreed. "And it'll totally confuse them when I break out, and they'll be all 'What? Didn't he only have one? When did he get a new arm?!' They won't know what hit 'em!" He chuckled with delight, grinning darkly as he imagined his attack on the humans.

Brooke grinned alongside Sal, though her grin wasn't quite so dark. "Wonderful!" She jumped on top of the crate and looked at her team, standing proudly with her hands on her hips. She cleared her throat before speaking in what the rest of the team had come to recognize as her "leader" voice. "We set out at midnight, so make sure you have everything you need. Stay here for gear adjustments or target practice, or go home and get some rest, whatever you need to make sure you're ready when the time comes. We don't know what'll happen in Vale, and it's possible our plan will fall to pieces, but we will push past that and any other obstacles we may face. We'll take down the mightiest huntsmen or the most colossal Grimm if it means we can take back our brothers and sisters!" She pulled a thick rifle from her back, her newly completed DESP-11b, otherwise known as the Laser Cannon. Here her expression changed, her grin bearing a savagery to rival Sal's. Her voice trembled with a certain giddiness to it. "Tomorrow we give the humans their first taste of a justice that's long overdue."

A JP between Fen-kun and Stingray

Speeding back to shore with vigor, Lauren sped towards a speck of bright blue in the distance. It was Tilki, coming up to the shore to meet up with Lauren. The dolphin faunus rocketed towards Tilki, a little out of breath, exclaiming, "C'mon, let's go meet up with our team and report this!" She half dragged the smaller fox faunus through the snow back towards the rundown Nara called home. The hilly environs was not too much of an obstacle for the athletic faunus, but it was apparent that Tilki was struggling some. Nonetheless, after walking for about twenty five minutes, the pair ran into the slummy tenement made in the same design as many on the island. It was an ugly, unsightly design. They approached the door, and knocked.

Nara answered the door, peeking her head just out the crack created when she opened it. Seeing Lauren the white haired fox faunus smiled and said in a cheerful tone, "I will be right out!" She then shut the door only to emerge from the household five minutes later wearing her winter clothing.

"Sorry youngest brother is sleeping so could not invite you inside," lied Nara hoping the excuse would be enough to prevent Lauren from wanting to come inside.

"It's fine," Lauren replied dismissively. "Anyways, holy crap a lot of stuff just happened we confronted team JSMN you know the spider siblings and the two birds anyways they were gonna take an airship and--"

Nara suddenly asked, "Was anyone hurt? I hope Gareth was not with you." Nara's voice was filled with concern, with a hint of fear. It was clear Nara was uneasy with the newest member of her team.

"No, he wasn't there. I was supposed to meet him at the library around this time. But anyways, team JSMN were planning to do something big. They were gonna steal an airship. I heard arguing from the hangar, so me and Tilki checked it out, and we found them acting suspiciously. We asked what they were doing in a hangar in the middle of winter, told us to buzz off and then Nel told the other teammates that the ship was ready. Seemed like they were gonna do something drastic with it." She sighed to catch her breath after talking from so long.

Nara was wide eyed as she listened she then asked in a worried tone, "Do you think they were working for one of the crime bosses? Did you hear where they were going?"

Lauren tilted her head, "Crime bosses? Nah, I think Jairo and crew seemed dead set on getting back at humanity, kinda like I was with Archer." She looked downwards in brief reflection to the similarities to her former extremism and that of Jairo.

Nara frowned and added, "I have been hearing a lot of anti-human talk lately, but this is worse. Did they get the airship or were you able to stop them?"

The dolphin faunus looked down sadly, "I wasn't able to stop them, no. They flew away, but I think I took out some of their engines. I'm not sure, it was happening too fast to say for certain."

Nara shook her head and said in a sad tone, "I wish I was there to help you. I hope they do not do anything too… bad. Do you think I should try warning Nilya about them?"

The taller girl sighed, "That might be good to warn them." Lauren paused, thinking about what he said to Jairo, "I hope at least Jairo has something to think on now."

Nara nodded and added, "Maybe we should go meet with Gareth before he gets too bored. I will contact Nilya later, she is likely busy right now." Nara was quiet for a second before she suddenly asked, "Do you think faunus should go to war to fight for equality?"

Twiddling her hands, Lauren replied, "I...I want to avoid war, but with all this going on, I just don't see how we won't go to war. All I know is that I don't want it. There's just too much suffering even without it." Her solemness from three months previous began showing again, unlike her normal cheery, energetic behavior.

Nara nodded before saying in a soft tone, "Me too… just… It is strange the last person who I would think would want to go to war almost has me thinking we should…" The fox faunus shifted her weight as she was uncomfortable with the thought of war.

Tilting her head, Lauren asked, "You didn't think…Jairo wouldn't wanna go to war? He's always been pretty vocal about being anti-human, and the past three months certainly haven't helped. Me and him...let's just say, we've had a few run ins after the incident with Archer."

"No I was referring to Nilya, my sister," replied Nara looking uncomfortable that she was admitting Nilya's views to Lauren. "She does not want it, but she is starting to say she sees no other way. She says humans pushed us in a corner… the fact the faunus have been relatively peaceful while the humans abused us has not helped us, " whispered Nara.

Lauren put her hand over her mouth and sighed. "That is indeed troubling. All this research and reflection, and it might be for naught…" She looked down sadly. Lauren mumbled, "C'mon, we gotta see Gareth." The dolphin faunus guided the other two to the library where the meeting was supposed to take place. After walking through several streets of disheartening street scenes that only grew worse with the winter, the three finally trudged to the dormant Faunus Academy, walked through the front and spied Gareth through the window, engrossed in his "studies". His expression was completely stoic as he slowly flipped through the pages of the old book he was reading. As the three entered the small library there were only a handful of other faunus in the room, but they were found on the opposite end of the library as the raven faunus. They were keeping themselves quiet while glancing up every minute or to check on the raven faunus.

Gareth stood in a corner of the library by himself reading a book. When the three entered the library the raven faunus glanced up for a split second at them before looking back at the worn yellow pages of the book he was reading. "You are late," said the man's emotionless voice. It was impossible to tell if he was irritated or just stating a fact due to his stoic mannerisms. When he spoke, the small group of feline faunus on the other end of the room looked up and locked their eyes on the raven slowly creating a tense atmosphere.

In response, Lauren approached the raven faunus and replied, "Yeah, we encountered some...difficulty with another team. You familiar with Team JSMN?"

"No," replied Gareth as he closed the book slowly and looked up at Lauren. "What do I need to know about them?" asked the stoic raven his expression still unreadable.

Looking back at Gareth's unemotional face, Lauren said to him, "They stole an airship and were planning to do something to get revenge against humanity. Tried to stop 'em, but they kept flying."

"Well that could lead into some interesting repercussions. I am guessing you want to try and stop them, or did you just want to tell us of these events so we would be prepared when the humans decide to respond to JSMN's actions," replied Gareth watching the feline faunus slowly walk out of the room. Nara wondered what Gareth had done to the small group of girls to make them so scared of him.

Lauren sighed. "There isn't much I can do but report it to the school. There's a possibility I slowed them down enough to where they can intervene, but other than that...like you said, we'd have to be prepared." Her face, much to the contrast of her teammate, had an anxious look to it and seemed much more expressive.

"What do you want us to do in the meantime? This library has become boring. I joined up with you all since I was led to believe we would do more than sit around idly," replied Gareth as he stretched his wings out slowly.

Looking a little uneasy at the implications of not sitting around idly, Lauren changed the subject to their new mission. "After we report this matter to the school, we are going to be embarking on our mission tomorrow. That's what we are going to be doing in the meantime. We have to focus on that."

"What is our mission? Or do plan to keep us in the dark on our assigned task?" asked Gareth as he folded his wings on his back after finishing his stretches.

"Nah, I'd never do that to you guys. So, our mission involves getting in contact with Archer and bringing him back to camp. We'll be flying to Vale to go and get him. We were instructed to use force if necessary…" She frowned, and continued, "...Which hopefully will not be necessary."

"Do not worry I will provide force if required so you do not have to hurt your human," replied Gareth a small blue flame appearing in his right palm. "I would enjoy experimenting with a human," added Gareth with a hint of pleasure in his voice.

"No!" responded Nara defensively.

"Gareth! What the hell?!" Lauren had a look of shock on her face. She knew him well enough that he would genuinely enjoy such a thing. Even as a team leader Lauren seemed just as uneasy with Gareth at times as Nara is.

Gareth shrugged and replied in his normal tone, "War seems to be coming being prepared for it would be wise. I am guessing this is the human you ruined your reputation for."

Lauren replied, "Yes, that is correct. I'm unsure of what the Faunus Academy wants with him, so I'm a bit worried…"

"It will be okay Lauren, we will help keep him safe," said Nara walking up next to her friend and putting a hand on the taller faunus' shoulder.

"We should insure we are prepared then. I am guessing we will have to travel to wherever he is to retrieve him," added Gareth as he put out the blue flame in his hand and let the arm drop to his side idly.

Lauren nodded. "Indeed. We have to get him on there peacefully if we can, which I think I can make happen. My dad knows a contact who could relay a message quickly. It's how I got in contact with Archer for the last three months."

"I could also talk to Nilya about it," offered Nara with a smile.

"How is your sister and her human?" asked Gareth in his stoic tone deciding to refrain from teasing Nara further at this time. He enjoyed messing with others, but knew he should only push so far.

"Good," snapped Nara without looking at the raven faunus.

Tilki, having spent the whole time in uncomfortable silence because of some run ins he had with Gareth, spoke up, saying, "Shall we get going now?"

Gareth looked at Lauren as if waiting for her to give the order. Nara looked at the other fox faunus with a smile and said, "Yes let us go. We should gather supplies and prepare for the trip. Also a plan would be nice, and I will contact Nilya." Nara was ready to leave to get away from Gareth, or at least give him something else to amuse himself with.

With a nod, Lauren directed the team to the various mission tasks. First on the agenda was coming up with a concrete plan. While the dolphin faunus was fairly certain that a simple rendezvous and a hint to Archer about what they are doing would be enough, and the logistics of getting there were fairly straightforward given the sanctioned use of an airship, conferring with Nilya could help out. Lauren led them through the snow-covered, run down streets to some sort of glorified shack by the shore, which was the aforementioned telecommunications building. She motioned for her team to wait outside while she cleared things with the other faunus manning the station. Since this particular faunus was a good friend of her father's, it was simply a matter of asking. After also hearing from the faunus that her father would be home in a matter of four days, Lauren bursted out of the building quite happy and led the other three inside.

Nara was happily watching the snow idly fall around them when Lauren emerged. Looking down at Lauren with a smile she followed the other faunus inside. Nara asked Lauren, "Who are we calling?"

Once inside the building Gareth quietly split off from the others. Finding an abandoned computer he got to work unlocking it then starting to surf through its files and servers. Once he found information of value he grabbed his tome with his right hand and opened it. He started growing a small third arm out from under his right arm pit. This new appendage was black and only had three talons that took a quill from his pocket and started writing in the now opened book that he held in front of it. His left hand controlled the computer as he skillfully bore through the computer seeking out knowledge he shouldn't have access to.

The taller Faunus replied, "We should contact Nilya first. I haven't talked to her in a while and I imagine you'd like to talk with her through voice, right?" Preoccupied, she didn't notice Gareth's absence, and proceeded to start the communication. She sat at a chair and tapped on the keyboard various queries and before long, anyone could be heard that signified dialing. Hopefully Nilya would pick up the unrecognized number.

There was an answering sound but it was quickly followed by a series of five soft beeps. There was a moment of silence before Nilya's tired voice came through, "Hello, who is this?" The communicator's computer started acting odd as Nilya's location began to hop around at random.

"Hello, this is Lauren, from team LGHT. We have some business to speak to you with. Nara's here too if ya wanna talk to her."

"Hello Lauren, do not worry I remember you. Nara told me you recruited her to your team, and of course I would like to talk to her. I was planning to tell her something important soon. What business would you like to discuss?" replied Nilya's voice after a short delay. She still sounded worn down despite her efforts to create a cheerful voice.

"What did you want to tell me?" asked Nara before Lauren could reply.

"Something I am afraid I am not allowed to tell Lauren. Let us discuss your business then we can talk Nara," replied Nilya.

Nara looked confused by this. 'What could Nilya not tell Lauren?' thought Nara.

Also confused, Lauren replied, "Well, my business has to do with Archer. We've been tasked by our school to take him into our custody. We are prepping a mission to get him from Vale."

There was a moment of silence before Nilya answered, "That sounds like a good idea. I wish I could say why, but I have to save that for my conversation with Nara. Do you need my help in this mission?" Now Nara looked really confused by her sister's words.

"Hold on, gimme a sec." Lauren muted the microphone and turned to Nara, "Something seems up with Nilya pertaining to what she's gonna tell you. Do you uh, mind if I stick around? It seems weird that I can't be included, but I need to know what this is about."

"It is strange for her to keep saying she wants to hide it from you like that," replied Nara before adding, "Let me ask her why she wants to hide it from you, then we can decide from there."

"Ok." Lauren unmuted the mic. "Yeah, we could use your help. You've been in contact with Archer, right? He shouldn't be putting up a fight about it, but what about the rest of his team?"

"Perhaps have Archer meet you alone? That or I can try invite him to a "private" conversation to get him away," replied Nilya.

Suddenly Nara asked, "Why can you not tell Lauren?"

There was a moment of silence before Nilya replied, "Archer asked me not to tell Lauren. I would like to tell you Lauren, but I told him I would not. So Nara we can discuss it once Lauren has left."

Nara smiled and looked over at Lauren and said, "You want to leave now or finish our previous conversation?"

The dolphin faunus replied, "Let's finish our conversation first. So, I think it'd be good if you could divert him to us. I'm sure he wouldn't mind having a 'private' conversation with us. Now, about the business with Archer, I'll go ahead and stand outside while you two have your chat." Lauren walked away from the controls and stood by the door.

Once Lauren had left Nara said, "Lauren is gone, what is going on Nil?"

"You might want to record this just in case my words are hard to understand due to my fatigue. Just keep a copy for yourself and delete the one on the server once we are finished," replied Nilya. Nara smiled as she pressed a button to record the conversation. Nara's instincts told her Nilya was really trying to use Nara as a relay for Lauren. In this way Nilya kept her word, but Lauren still finds out.

"Archer is trying to solve the problem between the faunus and the humans in a terrible way. He plans to try to turn himself into a villain for both the humans and faunus to focus on instead of each other. I have a copy of his "plan" that gave me. I am not sure if he trusts me, or if this is a decoy. However I can tell he is planning to do something that will make himself into a monster.

He plans to stage an execution of a faunus and a human. He came to me for help with an illusion to make one of these executions look real. Then he wants to blow up some human buildings in an effort to create an uproar among humanity. It appears he really hopes this destabilizes the human government with the shock of the terrorist attack. He also seems to think the increased emotions will attract increased number of grimm attacks against human cities.

I just do not see how this will help the situation! He hopes to distract both sides from each other, or force humanity to seek out faunus help. He does not seem to realize all he will do is create another human monster that the faunus can focus hate toward, and if it does weaken the humans. It might kickstart the war as it gives the faunus a tempting opening.

We are talking about Archer… the man's plans seem to only make things worse. He might actually kill someone on accident," explained Nilya sounding increasingly frustrated as she talked.

"I thought you wanted the war?" asked Nara confused.

Nilya was silent for a moment before she said in a sad tone, "I want a better future for our kind and my fut… for the next generation. I do not want war, but I do not think the faunus can keep allowing humanity to trample on us."

Nara could hear Nilya starting to break down and cry. "Why do you care so much about Archer?" asked Nara.

"Because I thought he was an ally to the faunus. We need humans to help us if we want a good ending to the coming storm. Humans willing to see us as equals. In a way, they represent hope for a better future for faunus. Now I am beginning to wonder if Archer is just another enemy to faunus. He is so self absorbed in his quest to save the world with his own "noble" sacrifice. He does not care about us! All he cares about is his own guilt, his own ego, himself! Faunus do not need more self serving humans who use us as stepping stones to reach their own goals.

Yes, let him use the misfortune of an entire oppressed race to satisfy his guilt driven desire to attone himself in his own delusional way!" exclaimed Nilya in a frustrated voice before breaking down in tears.

"We do not need humans to be self serving saviors… we need their friendship and help. A monster pretending to be on our side is not going to help make a world where my future children will be safe," sobbed Nilya.

Nara stood there wide eyed at her sister's speech unsure what to say. Before she could say anything Varik's somber but distorted voice came across the line, "Perhaps Lauren will have better luck talking to Archer. Nara I have a weapon and some armor I designed for you. Once you're in human territory I can arrange for a supply drop. Let me know if your team needs anything else. I will do what I can to assist."

Nara muttered, "Thanks… I guess we best go then." Her ears were focused more on Nilya's crying than Varik's words.

"I agree… good luck," added Varik before the transmission ended.

Nara ended the recording as she looked back to the door and yelled in a subdued tone, "Lauren you can come back in."

Fortunately for Lauren, the door was not very good at keeping sounds muffled and concealed, a mark of neglected maintenance to soundproofing. Unfortunately for her, the words and interactions between Nara and Nilya were terrible. As she listened in on the conversation, Lauren's heart dropped with the news pertaining to what Archer was planning. She fully knew that his plans were not the greatest, nor the most tactical, but this new plan was the work of something terrible. The eavesdropping faunus could only stay still in shock, utterly devastated by the implications it had and Nilya's pain. By the time Nara had called her back, a few tears were on her face and her fists were tightly clenched, storming through the door. When she saw Nara, Lauren softened, muttering, "I heard everything."

Nara looked at Lauren with a look of concern as she quietly said, "Lauren… Nilya and Archer are not the closest of friends. She is judging him from a limited knowledge of him. He might not be willing to listen to her, but you two are closer." Nara was clearly unsure what to say as she stood there, her tail and ears twitching nervously.

The taller girl sighed deeply, ruffling her hair with her hands and shaking her head, "That is true, yes. I really hope he doesn't go through with this. I don't want to see him get hurt or hurt others through this plan. I really don't. Not after what's been going on lately with all this hatred. I can't help but feel upset that he'd keep something so big from me, after all of the time we've spent together." She began to feel anger rise up from within at Archer intending to conceal the plan and trying to singlehandedly deflect the tensions onto himself, without so much of a thought to faunus. Or her.

Nara shook her head and said, "Archer likely did not want you to get involved to protect you. From little I know about him from our little encounter several months ago he seems to lack the ability to consider what others really feel, wants to place all the world's troubles on his own back, and has some of the worse plans ever conceived."

Nara forced a smile as she added, "I think Archer is trying to be a good guy and wants to help you he is just… an idiot who needs to learn to listen to others."

Sighing, Nara added, "I doubt Nilya wants me to tell you this, but she felt like Archer and Varik were very similar in many ways. Noble intentions masked by terrible plans and execution… granted their approaches were different to different problems, but they both arrived at equally bad results.

Nilya had a long conversation with Varik about this, and she made him realize he was unable to help as a leader, but he could help as a follower. It hurt Varik's pride, but he agreed to step back and let Nilya lead him as this conflict unfolds. Perhaps you should have the same conversation with Archer. Both men lack the important perspective that us faunus have in regards to this problem. I believe we should save our judgement on Archer until you have had a chance to talk to him. Then you can truly discover if he cares about you and the faunus or just himself."

Eased by Nara's words, Lauren reaffirmed the sentiment. "Yeah. Thanks. I needed that." Her composure was restored and she added, "I had no idea about that Varik had that in common with Archer. It's about time I knock some sense into that boy's head." She laughed a little, keeping her mind on Nara's more optimistic train of thought.

"Well Varik was more aggressive and apparently got in a lot of fights 'in the defense of faunus.' Same concept of a human trying to help, but not really helping. Archer has guilt issues and Varik has anger issues. Sorry, rambling again," replied Nara as she realized she was talking too much.

"I am sure you can knock some sense into Archer. You are not as soft spoken or as timid as Nilya, and she got her hot head of a husband to listen," added Nara with a wink.

Lauren exclaimed with a smile on her face, seeing Nara's wink, "Hey, what's that supposed to mean?"

Nara playfully smiled at Lauren and replied, "You're the tougher athletic type. Nilya and I are a bit more into being graceful and refined."

The fox faunus then asked, "So where should we try to kidnap Archer? Should we go to Beacon or Vale? Or try to get him away from the main population centers?"

Pacing, Lauren addressed Nara. "Definitely somewhere away from population centers. I was thinking a forest or something like that. There's plenty of those that would be ideal to meet him."

"That would likely work. We could use Varik or Nilya to get him in the right spot for us… would you like to meet him alone at first?" suddenly asked Nara.

The taller girl thought about it for a second, and then responded with a nod. "Yeah. I need to talk one on one with him about his plan. Plus, if he were to physically resist, I by far have the upper hand." She cheerily smirked at her self-assessment of strength and dexterity.

"The rest of us can secure the area, and keep an eye out for humans and Grimm. That or we can go retrieve what supplies Varik offered to supply us… is there anything we should ask for?" replied Nara thoughtfully.

"I don't think so. I think we have all our bases covered. We got Varik's supplies, a plan, a hope and some motivation. We should be great~" Her cheery demeanor came back full force, now that things were figured out and the troublesome impact of the previous conversation was mitigated.

"Is there anything else we should ask Varik to get us?" asked Nara.

The dolphin faunus thought about it, before replying, "Nah, like I said, we're good. Good good good." Her cheery demeanor seemed to belie nervousness, although unlike with any other things Lauren tries to "hide" about herself, it was hidden well, masked by her energy.

"Good, honestly I am still not comfortable asking him for anything. I hate to say it since he married my sister, but I do not feel very comfortable around him. I know he wants to help its just it all still feels... off," replied Nara admitting some of her feelings about Varik.

Lauren assured Nara, "I'm sure you'll grow to trust him. I know it isn't easy, but I appreciate you keeping your chin up through all of the last few months and helping me out through difficult times involving getting to know humans. Thank you." She hugged Nara, before pulling away to call the rest of her team away from the telecommunications room. Only then did she realize Gareth was missing. "Uh, where's Gareth?"

"Here," replied the raven Faunus as he entered the main communication room for the first time. "I had some personal matters to attend to," he added in his dull tone of voice.

Nara looked at Lauren with a smile and asked, "Should we get going?"

Lauren nodded, and proceeded to lead her team out of the telecommunications room, prepping it to make the room exactly as she had found it, as per the operator's instruction. They exited the shack, and Lauren walked Nara over to her tenement, before walking back to the school in silence with her three teammates.

LGHT and Archer: Betrayal

After splitting with her team about a kilometer back towards a clearing in the forest, Lauren begun to hone in on where Archer was purported to be. He was reported to have gone into the forest on the far outskirts of Vale alone. The dolphin faunus searched the foliage for where he might be. Just as she was considering checking back down a path she only skimmed, Lauren spied the figure of a shorter boy decked in a winter coat and scarf. Not intending to enter quietly for seeing what was essentially a good friend, Lauren called out, "Archer!"

Archer turned to look towards where the voice was coming from, "Give it up Nilya, I'm not going to stop." He said, continuing to walk. "Stop using her image."

Confused, Lauren replied, "What? No, Archer, it's me! Look."

Archer continued on, feeling slightly aggravated at what he believed were Nilya's attempts at convincing him to stop. Lauren jogged to catch up with Archer, and she got in front of him. "See? No Nilya images here. Just plain ol' me."

Archer sighed, "Sorry Lauren." He looked around, "What are you doing here?"

"I came here...to ask you a favor." Her eyes darted around, unsure of how to broach the subject of what she learned with her mission. "Ok, so I was asked by the school to take you into custody. They have some business to discuss with you."

Archer thought for a moment, "I refuse, sorry. I'm not interested in going to your school right now."

"It's not a choice. It's my mission. If you won't cooperate, I'm gonna need to forcefully take you to the ship. But...before we go, we have something else to talk about. Something...secret." She looked directly into Archer's eyes, looking fairly serious in her countenance.

"You can tell me your secret, but I'm not going to go easily with you right now." Archer put his hands in his pockets, not wanting to fight, but willing.

Lauren tensed ever so slightly, right arm reaching for a keychain with her trident in portable form. "Well, it's more about your secret than mine. Your plan to become a scapegoat for us all."

"Where did you hear about this plan?" Archer asked curiously.

"She told Nara over the phone. And I just so happened to hear." From Lauren's bitter tone, it was obvious that she didn't in fact 'just happen to hear it.'

"I suppose it would be expected that she would tell her sister." Archer sighed, "Sorry Lauren, but I have a feeling I know what you're going to say. I'm not going to stop." He began to shift the bow slung over his back, "Please, call the rest of your team."

Resolute, Lauren fully extended her trident and held it out to point at Archer. "I'm not giving up that easy. Maybe you were able to push aside Nilya, but I won't let you do this. Not after all we've been through."

Archer pulled out his bow, "Are you alone here?" He asked, judging his situation, "Did the school really just send you out here to get me?"

"No, I'm not alone. I have my team nearby. And yes, the school did just send me to get you. And it so happens that I need to stop you from this plan. You are just gonna make things worse for us, whether or not I get involved."

"You were never supposed to be involved." Archer replied, calculating his chance of escape, "I'm sorry." Archer replied, taking a step forward and imposing twice Lauren's weight upon her, "That shouldn't be enough to hurt you, but, you aren't used to it, so it will certainly slow you down." Archer said as he turned to walk away.

Indeed, Lauren was weighed down significantly by the use of the semblance. She was, however, well within range to impede his own progress with a pillars of ice that sprung up, forming a ring around him like a cage. Her feelings of tension and anger were subdued, both by the physical burden inflicted on her and her friendship with Archer. "Look, I know that you want to do things because you have good intentions. Really, I get that. The world sucks, humans are fighting faunus, faunus are fighting humans, bloodshed all over the place. Bloodshed that I hate seeing. You are not gonna stop it, or even slow it down with the way things are going. Hell, I had to try and bust some other faunus from stealing an airship headed for the mainland, trying to do something that I would have sympathized with over three months ago." She paused, her throat becoming tight as the emotions piled on.

"But things are different. Looking through the history, the books, the attitude of the populace, this was a long time coming. Trust me, I know where faunus stand on this. Try and see things from our point of view." Her expression hardened to emphasize her point, only to soften when another wave of emotions took over.

"I don't need you to become a monster from the history books. Especially not you. I ask you, from the bottom of my heart, as a friend--no, as a dear friend--please, don't do this. Please." The tall faunus kneeled down on her right knee and looked down, tears forming in her eyes.

Archer grit his teeth, "I'm not going to stop it." He replied, "But maybe I don't want to." He walked up to one of the ice pillars and placed his hand on it, forcing it to crumble under its own weight. He began to walk, but stopped for a moment, "People don't save monsters, Lauren, they capture or kill them. If you were sent here to capture me, what does your school think of me?"

Lauren could only shake her head. "Please, don't be this way. This isn't you."

"You're wrong." Archer stated coldly, surprising his own emotions to hold his semblance back, "This is me now, and I finally have the power to accomplish my goals. The old me endangered everyone haphazardly, but not anymore." Archer continued walking away.

Having no knowledge or many clues that Archer had this in mind, Lauren stubbornly persevered, starting to walk back towards Archer. "But you're gonna endanger people now! What happened to you? What possible goals could you have that'd make you do this?"

"I told you. My goal is power." Archer increased the force in an attempt to stop Lauren.

"P-power? After all this time, after saving me, after I stood up for you...it's been power? Have I just been a tool to you?! Have I really just been a means to these goals? Some excuse to think you are righteous by siding with us?!" She began to get angry, and in her fury struggled more against the new weight.

"Don't confuse me helping you, with siding with the faunus. As far as I'm concerned, Faunus as a whole are no better to side with than humans. As for you being a tool, no, you're not a tool, you were a catalyst."

Looking down, she bitterly replied, "I really was a damn fool. Thinking you were anymore than a coward looking after his own skin. I guess you were right all those months ago about you. But I was too dumb to listen. And I guess I pay the price." She struggled to her her had in the pocket of her pants, pressing a button in a little remote to signal her team. Lauren paused to take a breath to keep struggling against her weight, before continuing on. "Nice to know our friendship was a lie, huh? You using me to speed things up, me naively believing in you. That is something I cannot let go!"

"Good." Archer said, hand shaking, "Would've saved you a lot of pain, to realize that earlier."

"I guess so. Now, into my custody, human." At that time, her team arrived and saw that Lauren was in a predicament, seemingly unable to convince Archer based on their positions and body language.

Archer frowned and looked at the new arrivals. "I already told you. I refuse." Archer pulled his bow out and reached into his pocket to pull out a box of needles. "Do you know what I did the last three months?" He asked Lauren, "After I got so out of control that I couldn't even stand up."

Lauren growled, "Tell us on the ship." Tilki went towards Archer, prepping his blade from his flute and formulating the perfect illusion to have him fall in. He decided to make the trees seem as if they were blocking out his light

"The first thing I did was have my eyes removed and replaced." Archer said in a serious tone, "To atone for what I did to Nina to save you. The second thing I did was learn to control myself." Around Archer, the snow became compact in a clear circle, and suddenly Tilki felt so much pressure it made him collapse, while Lauren returned to feeling normal. "I forced myself to endure enough weight to crush my body."

Nara ran up at this point her hands glowing with light as she glanced over at Archer then Lauren with a look of concern. Raising the strange weapon she had just received, the blade folded back revealing a weapon barrel and pointed at Archer while yelling, "Stop!"

Gareth slowly approached from Archer's blind spot. His face decorated with a sadistic smile as power surged to his hands. His palms tore open as jagged bones appeared in the opening giving the appearance of teeth. Theses new "mouths" began to vomit thick blue flames that Gareth carefully began to mold into an orb of twisted energy. Smiling he continued to watch his team try to subdue the human. Gareth would allow the other faunus to weaken the human so his defenses would be too weak to resist Gareth's terrible magic.

While the weight was lifted from Lauren, she wasted no time in thrusting her trident forward sending a barrage of superheated water towards Archer, looking at him with a hurt and angered look. She addressed her team. "Don't be afraid to hold back. He's in no mood for cooperation. Nor will he ever be."

Archer released Tilki and forced the area around him to undergo several times more weight than usual. The snow around him turned to ice, and the water was forced violently into the ground. "It took a lot in order to get my body to stop being so weak." Archer took an effortless step forward, but the snow and earth beneath him cracked. He pulled out what looked like an epipen, and injected it into his leg. His body tensed up and then relaxed eerily, and he reduced the gravity on him back to normal, and then dashed towards Nara at an unreasonable speed, jumping above her and coming down with a semblance-empowered drop kick.

Nara froze in place as Lauren told them to attack Archer. Then Archer dashed at her, and she finally pulled the trigger. From the barrel of the pistol erupted a burst of brilliant light. Volatile energy lept from the weapon threatening to burn Archer with a burst of superheated gasses. Nara's lack of combat skills and reluctance to fight showed as her instincts caused her to leap to the side to avoid Archer's attack. She was not quick enough to completely dodge the attack and Archer crushed her beautiful tail under his foot causing her to scream in pain. Archer quickly pulled out another syringe similar to the one he used, and injected Nara with it, causing her a searing pain around her tail.

Gareth walked up next to Lauren and asked in a sinister tone, "Will you allow me to experiment with his human to help my research? I promise not to kill him." The ball of morphing energy was growing in strength as the palms of his hands fed the flames. Then Lauren could hear it, the mouths on his palms were whispering some form of strange chant as they spat the odd flames. The words were from a language foreign to every beast on this world.

Freaked out by his combat, even after three months, Lauren replied somewhat meekly, "Just...try not to go overboard, we need him in good condition by the time we get there."

Archer discarded the syringe and looked to the stranger near Lauren, Archer looked to two trees next to them and began to impose his semblance on them, causing them to crack loudly and begin to fall towards the two people. Archer then ran deeper into the woods as the trees fell.

Gareth stepped out of the way of the tree and said in his normal tone of voice, "I will not do anything too permanent to him. You might want to look after the fox… she looks like she is in pain."

After also dodging the tree, Lauren gave her reluctant approval to Gareth. What was but a few wounds after what he would be getting into anyways and after what he did to use her? She said to Gareth, "I know she's in a lot of pain, but she'll be able to heal herself in no time, remember? But uh...I'll make sure nothing gets her while she's healing." She stepped aside to Nara's side, on the defense while the fox faunus prepped her semblance.

Gareth started after Archer in a surprisingly quick pace. The raven faunus' keen eyes easily tracked Archer as Gareth pursued his prey. "I am glad you decided to run like you did. I prefer to conduct my research alone," said the man's sleek voice as he followed after the human. The orb of energy was being held in his right hand as he sprinted after the human.

Archer collapsed another tree between them and sharply turned as the tree sprayed snow everywhere. Archer then began forcing all of the snow from the leaves to fall, lowering visibility. Archer pulled out his sword and struck out at the raven faunus from a tree.

Gareth smiled as he held out his left hand, allowing the sword to cut into the changing flesh. Gareth's hand was filled with pain as its flesh wrapped around the blade, but the faunus' twisted mind enjoyed the sensation of his flesh's painful transformation. The human's momentum carried him toward Gareth allowing the faunus to easily shove the orb of energy into the human's chest. The orb absorbed into Archer's chest causing his skin to change color, and giving Archer a strange sensation as the energy moved to his spine. Gareth looked into Archer's eyes and just smiled.

Archer grit his teeth through the pain, but began to lose focus on his semblance, causing the area to rapidly become heavier and heavier. Archer quivered as he pulled out a pill. Slowly he struggled to take it before they were both crushed. As soon as he took the pill, the area rapidly returned to normal as he passed out.

Gareth smiled as Archer struggled under his own semblance. Gareth's changing magic had run through Archer's spine, transforming the bones to brittle mockeries of their former self. As Archer added weight his own body gave way long before Gareth's. "Knowledge is power," said Gareth as he looked down at the human's limp body. The faunus had allowed the human to waste his strength on Lauren and the others while he created this specific "curse" to target the man's spine. At point blank range Gareth had precision control of his powers.

Pulling the sword out of his palm he pressed a button on his belt to summon the others to his location. He did not want to waste any energy in case Archer woke up.

After ensuring that Nara had her tail patched up and good as new away from danger, the two were summoned to his location. Tilki was summoned by Gareth's mere presence, since he was close enough to witness their little exchange. After they had gathered around, Lauren examined Archer before cringing, before attempting to harden her expression. "Come now, let's take him on board. This fool has a lot to answer for, broken bones or no." Her words were delivered uncharacteristically icily.

"His bones are metal… it was quite disappointing I may add, and almost cost me the battle. Too bad for him, I had plenty of time to fuel the flames to an excess of what I thought I needed, " replied a once again stoic Gareth.

Nara stood behind Lauren, frozen tears still on her cheek as she protectively held her tail close to her body. "Why did he do this? How did he become this way?" whimpered Nara as she stared down at Archer. Nara sounded pathetic, but deep inside she felt a burning hatred for Archer and his kind growing.

"Does it matter?" asked Gareth unemotionally. "He is clearly our enemy so let us treat him as such. We should tear out some of those mechanical parts so others could reverse engineer them to be of use to the faunus. I believe I could extract most of them without killing him… his eyes would be easy. He does not need those to live and being blind would make him easier to control," added the raven faunus passively. Gareth's words were a test for his team. How far would they go now with this human? Or rather how far would they let him go?

Struggling with wanting some form of comeuppance and staying away from the grisly, frightening experimentation, Lauren firmly addressed Gareth. "I don't want to risk getting in trouble if we torture him. Even if this welp is getting under my nerves, I say we find another way to deal with it back at the academy. Certainly after we tell them all that happened they can see he is no ally to us. Or anyone." She gave one last sad glance at Archer, and sighed. "I can't believe it Nara, but you were kind of right about him."

Nara frowned and said, "He was so caring before… He just wanted to protect everyone, and now he is this. I had a bad feeling about his deal with the faunus as did Nilya. Did that change him? Or is this what we can expect from humans?"

Gareth nodded at Lauren as he summoned up more of his flames. "For our safety I will insure his back stays brittle as we transport him. He will not be harmed as long as we treat him like he is made of glass." Kneeling down Gareth pushed the energy into Archer's back as he worked to make the change longer lasting. "Irony is his body will likely be unable to repair the damage I am doing easily due to his bones no longer being natural. Flesh is much more intriguing than metal," added the raven faunus as he continued to weave his semblance into Archer's body.

Lauren nodded and gingerly picked up Archer, taking care to ensure that he would not have a broken spine. After walking back the way they came, she lead her entire team to where the ship was docked. After getting aboard and getting situated, Lauren positioned Archer in the storage room, making sure he was secured and locked in. Lauren looked at the door one last time, and returned to talk with her team. "Well guys, our mission was a success…" Her tone, however, was quite drained and a bit hollow.

"We need to get him home before we can call it complete," said Gareth as he wrote some notes about Archer in his tome.

"The assigned mission… not our mission," muttered Nara sadly.

"Indeed. Our mission failed terribly. And y'know what? I thought he really was better than that...creature he was today. How stupid, huh? I guess at heart, I'm still a naive little girl. Stupid, stupid, stupid!" She was fuming and had tears in her eyes. "Thinking that humans were anything more than selfish bastards who couldn't give a damn about anything other than themselves." In her rage, she wasn't thinking of Nilya and Varik, only the scorn she had for her ex-friend.

Gareth looked at Lauren for a second before asking in his stoic tone, "Are you the stupid one or is he? An interesting question to ponder, and one time will reveal." The raven faunus then walked off toward the cell. He would not waste this opportunity to talk to this Archer character alone.

Nara shook her head at Gareth then hugged Lauren while saying, "I am sorry… it's terrible what he did to you. He had us all fooled."

Appreciating the hug, Lauren sighed heavily and proceeded to ask Nara, "Yup." After a pause, the dolphin faunus asked Nara, "You wanna come in my room? I really need to get my mind off of this. It didn't do me well to just bottle everything up, but I think for now I could use some fun. What do you say?"

Nara nodded and said, "Of course Lauren, lead the way."

Taking one last look towards the makeshift cell, Lauren led Nara into her quarters and proceeded to ask, "You don't mind board games, right?"

"No, but you will likely need to teach me how to play. What game are we going to play?" asked Nara trying her best to sound cheerful.

"Ok. So, how about we play go? It's a pretty...swell...game…" Despite her best efforts, her words came out hollow and disjointed and her voice shaky, and an awkward silence befell them before she sighed and put her head in her hands. "I can't do this. I just...can't...stop thinking about it. I'm a wreck!" She started to sob.

Nara threw her arms around Lauren once again as tears formed in her own eyes. "You can… I know this is hard but you cannot let him beat you down like this. You are stronger, smarter, and better than him. Lauren his betrayal was horrible, and we will show him he is a worthless idiot for what he did," whispered Nara as she held her friend.

Lauren replied, "And look at the one who fell for it hook line and sinker."

"Lauren you were following your heart… We wanted to believe there were good humans out there. We wanted Archer to be a good man. I guess we just ignored the warning signs. It is not wrong to have hope, but I guess we need to also be careful," replied Nara pulling away so she could face Lauren. "You cannot turn cold like him… but perhaps we should be more careful with who we trust."

The dolphin faunus nodded. "Yeah. Hanging out with Archer reminded me of the good times I had in my hometown, before they all turned on me. Maybe a part of me wanted that back...But that sure isn't happening, is it? Not with people like him at the helm." She clenched her fist, tempted to punch something in sight.

"Perhaps dwelling and hoping for the past to return is wrong… most of us had to hide, or were forced to live in designated areas away from the humans. We should focus on creating a better future for the faunus.

Do not worry about Archer. He will never be an important leader. He lacks empathy for others, charisma to inspire, and even when he was acting good he was difficult for many. He lives in an ego fueled fantasy that makes him feel important. You have more qualities that would inspire followers and will create true change, " replied Nara.

Having been quelled for the moment being, she unclenched her fist and sighed, "Thanks you for your faith in me. I'm just...quite emotional right now. It's like two years ago all over again."

"I am sorry. I know it took a lot for you to put faith in him just for him to betray you. He also betrayed his own team as well. Let us just be glad he did not get any of us killed with his betrayal. Unlike you Lauren he will die alone and unwanted," replied Nara, her voice showing her anger.

"I hope so. The bastard used me like I'm some goddamn pawn in a game of chess! A 'catalyst'!" Lauren stood up and rocketed a nearby mug into the wall, shattering it to pieces. Breathing heavily, she could only grunt and cry out in anger.

Nara wrapped her arms around Lauren as she suppressed her own anger to help Lauren. "Let us unload the burden to complete the mission and focus on our future after that," whispered Nara. She then tried to distract Lauren's focus off of Archer, "I was thinking if this war kicks off the humans will attack our only city. Perhaps we should find a safe place for our friends and families. What do you think?"

Lauren merely shrugged listlessly. Her mind was racing, and for the life of her she could not think straight. Her anger was clouding her thoughts, and she could only fume while Nara stood by her side, trying her best to assuage her friend.

Archer sat in quiet contemplation, outwardly relaxed as he ran through his plan. He was suppressing his innate worry for his teammates, who were off doing their part. He knew they were capable, moreso perhaps than him, but it was hard to shake that feeling. For himself, he wasn't afraid though, his plan was coming to fruition, and he was glad that his prediction that they would send Lauren's team to get him was correct. His almost prayer like thoughts were interrupted by the faunus who had bested him, and Archer grinned to welcome him, "If I knew I'd have a guest, I would've cleaned up a little." Archer said, referring to the dusty cleaning closet he was locked in, "Forgive me for my poor host etiquette."

Gareth looked at Archer passively not responding at first as he took the massive tome from his reinforced belt and opened it. Sitting down across from Archer the raven faunus flipped through the pages for a second before finally talking, "Do not worry I am not big on formalities, do not let the suit fool you." Gareth reached back and casually plucked a feather from his own wing and started writing in the strange book.

"I must say your fake skeleton was disappointing, but at the same time does peak some interest. I would love to see how your body reacts to my reimagining of your spinal column. That is not why I am here however, I am more curious at the moment on how you have afforded to anger my allies so greatly," said Gareth in his stoic voice as his eyes slowly drifted back up toward Archer.

"Afforded? For me it costs more to keep your team as allies." Archer responded kindly, "It's much more useful for us to be enemies." Archer thought for a moment, "Please don't take that statement personally, I have no malice towards you, and I would even like to extend an apology for harming your teammate."

Gareth wrote in his tome as Archer spoke before asking, "How is it more useful to you to have enemies?"

"If you didn't want someone to fight, but they were going to anyways, wouldn't you want them to fight someone who would pull their punches?" Archer asked.

"You want to be our enemy so you can pull your punches?" asked Gareth looking at Archer as his right eyebrow raised a little.

"No, I'd just prefer that certain people stay out of the way of those who won't." Archer looked at the book, "Such a cute little diary, you should write in big, bold letters 'Protect my team' and not worry so much about what I'm doing."

"Do not mock what you do not understand," replied Gareth unphased by Archer's words. The raven faunus then continued his questioning after a short pause, "I am guessing you have already told others the answer to this question, but indulge me. What are you striving to achieve?"

Archer laughed softly, "People keep asking me what I'm trying to achieve, but maybe I'm just trying to make others fail." Archer looked the faunus in the eyes, with a wide grin "I wasn't mocking you, it was more of a threat, if anyone on your team gets hurt, I'll be sure to return the favor."

Gareth's emotionless eyes looked back into Archer's as he said calmly, "You seem to assume I care about my team. Do you know why I am here? The better question is do you know what I have done to you?"

"I have a theory about what's going on." Archer said with an unsettling grin, "Not that it matters. I don't know why you're here, and you don't quite know why I'm actually here. It wouldn't kill you to smile, after all, you caught me, and you get to have a little bit of intimate torture with me."

"I seek to know why you are here. I could ask the ones who you have damaged at a deep emotional level, but I find information from the source tends to be best. Capturing you was an assignment that is a means toward an end for me. I could care less if it was you or another being. The only aspect of your capture that truly interested me was how my abilities affected a human body. Sadly the results are tainted by the circumstances surrounding the experiment, " replied Gareth in his normal void of any emotion manner.

"Sorry to disappoint." Archer said in a guilty tone, "Next time I'll try to be a little more human." Archer's tone was suggestive as if he were flirting, "As for information, I'd really like us to be a one time thing, if we keeping opening up to each other, we might catch feelings."

Gareth lacked any physical response to Archer's words. "Do not worry, I lack the capacity for such emotional connections. Sadly out of respect for my team and the wishes of those above me I must limit the extent of my research to mere words," replied the faunus.

"Usually the foreplay comes before." Archer said in a disappointed tone, "What do you want to know? Unfortunately the person who knows my dress size isn't on this ship."

"Your mind: how you think, who you are, and what your goals are," replied Gareth. "Most of this knowledge is useless. However even the most insignificant piece can help solve a greater puzzle. Often you do not realize you have such a piece until you find where to put it. Thus I seek all knowledge I can. Lastly it is a way to pass the time."

"I know a faunus girl exactly like you, though she's much more emotive than you." Archer said, "Aren't you frustrated by the rules set in place that prevent you from doing the research you actually want?"

"Rules are set for a reason, but they can be a barrier for my research at times. I have not minded it too much as I break a few of them in a calculated manner when I see fit. It also creates a unique challenge to overcome, and it makes reaching my goals that much more satisfying," replied Gareth as he flipped through his tome carefully. After a moment of idle silence Gareth asked "Do you wish to change the rules?"

"Well rules are arbitrary." Archer replied, "If I followed my school's rules, I'd do my best to sink this ship, but if I followed faunus rules, I'd have to be a traitorous pawn. No, I don't have a desire to change the rules, I'd rather just remove the people making them." Archer smiled and spoke casually and politely, "I suppose you could say in some ways I support faunus, and in other ways I support humans."

"Yet you turn on faunus that are willing to be allies with humans. Lauren's reputation among many of the faunus has been badly damaged in many circles by her defense of you. You turned her willingness to cooperate with a human into anger and hate toward your kin," Gareth added as he read a page in his book. "If you want to remove people making such rules, perhaps you should try the route of an assassin. I doubt you will be able to replace those in power through other means."

"Assassinations are more of a means to an end." Archer replied, "I wouldn't call it a goal." Archer kept smiling, "I do have my regrets about Lauren. I'd feel better if she had the chance to repair her reputation than to risk her own life trying to help me. It's dangerous to be friends with monsters after all."

Gareth looked up at Archer and asked, "O you are a monster? Do explain your reasoning for this self imposed title."

"Wonderful! I got a reaction from you." Archer said excitedly, "I was obviously pulling your leg, I'm more of a wannabe monster, no matter how much I replace, I can never get rid of my inherent nature."

"Why would you want to be a monster?" asked Gareth as he looked back at his tome. He then added, "What is your definition of a monster?"

Archer laughed softly, "A monster can tear through people and achieve their goals with no remorse. I can assure you, I've committed monstrous acts, and have had to feel human afterwards."

"What monstrous acts have you committed?" asked Gareth.

"I won't divulge that information to you, since as far as the present goes, none of my misdeeds have necessarily happened." Archer yawned, "Though I'm sure Lauren will have plenty of stories about me she'd love to tell you."

"I do not care for emotional based rants or judgements," replied Gareth standing up. "Good bye, Archer," added Gareth as he sealed his tome and started to leave.

Archer smiled, "Bye faunus! Be sure to keep what I said about your team in mind, I may not be a monster, but I certainly do have a fondness for them."

"Good to know you're fond of me," replied Gareth in his neutral tone as he slowly shut the door.

Jairo & Sahn Xill

Mira Cullous      Nel Phelia

Team JSMN
Castaways

"Uuurgh..." Jairo groaned, slowly opening his eyes as he regained consciousness. His mind raced quickly with memories of what had just happened - they had crashed. His suspicions had proven to be true, the hit they felt before taking off had been Lauren. Muttering a curse, he attempted to stand up. Immediately, he felt a sharp pain in his second left arm. Glancing at his bleeding arm, he winced as he sat up. Nel, Mira and Sahn were also thrown about the cabin- knocked unconscious as well. Jairo deemed himself lucky that the crash hadn't knocked his head further into the electric box he was peering in, The ship's emergency landing raft was the only reason they were all alive, as he could see the outline of a white structure through the holes in the airship's wreckage.

"Agh- crap-" he cursed repeatedly as got up, making sure not to touch anything with his injured arm. A chill ran down his neck as the cold winter air drifted into the broken ship.

Nel let out a small yawn as her eyes slowly began to flutter open. The hawk faunus sat up slowly, her eyes groggily gazing around the room around her before they suddenly flashed wide open, and the familiar smile graced her lips. "Man, that was a hoot!" Jairo ignored the comment, slowly making his way over to the closest opening in the wreckage. He peered outside - all he could see was the ocean. There was no sign of land for miles, no seagulls to direct them, no stars to guide them - in short, they were stranded.

"God FUCKING dammit!" the spider faunus screamed, slamming down his hand on the metal hull. He turned around to Nel, and stomped over to her. "This is YOUR fucking fault! You had one job! One job, to get us a good airship! And you had to pick the MOST HITTABLE ship in the entire bloody place?!"

Nel pouted, the smile slightly fading off her face. "Hey, I wasn't the one flying, Mira was!"

Awakened by the sudden shouting, Sahn grunted and sat up. "Can you two just... stop, for a sec?" she muttered, rubbing her head.

"Jairo's going around blaming me for no reason!" Nel complained, putting her hands on her hips. "It wasn't-"

"Wait, wait!" Jairo interjected suddenly. "Where the hell is Mira?"

The Owl faunus' voice called out from outside the ship. "Over here, when you're done with your bickering." The three breathed a collective sigh of relief. Giving the hawk a final disdainful glance, Jairo cursed under his breath and made his way over to the large hole in the hull which he assumed Mira had gotten through. The inflatable raft, which formed a large circular platform around the ship, felt surprisingly stable despite its bounciness. Not too far from the exit was Mira. The owl girl was holding her arm over the ocean, examining her watch intently.

"The hell are you doing?" Jairo questioned, raising an eyebrow, still frustrated yet puzzled as to what their leader was attempting to do.

"Ssh." Mira squinted, raising a finger to her lips. After a few seconds, she exhaled. "Okay, maybe our situation isn't so lost after all."

"What in the bloody web are you on about?" Jairo asked, walking over to where she was and leaning over towards the ocean. Nel and Sahn followed, the latter shivering a little as she exited the boat. "I'm not seeing anything."

"We're not, but this thing is." Mira said, tapping her watch. "Remember when I told you Brooke installed a metal detector to my watch?"

"I'm not hearing any beeping." Sahn pointed out, glancing at the water nervously.

"You two aren't, but..." she raised her left arm over the edge of the water once more. "You hearing that, Nel? That faint beeping?"

"I..." the hawk faunus mused, squinting. "Yeah... yeah! It's coming from your watch! Is it it responding to something underwater?"

"To be fair, it could just be detecting the ship right next to us." Sahn motioned to the massive hunk of metal next to them.

"No, no. I'm hearing two beeps. The second one's a lot weaker, so that must mean there's something sunken down there. And my bet is, it's the engine we're missing right now."

Sahn shook her head. "That's a lot of maybes." She said, taking a step backwards.

"And damn it if we ain't taking the chance." Jairo said, taking off his coat and the harness which held the violin.

Sahn cleared her throat. "Ah-"

"I can shield us from the cold with my semblance, and Nel can use hers to help us breathe. Assuming we're not too far, it shouldn't be too deep. Wave situation is also in our favour. Think you'd be up to that, Nel?"

"Should be a breeze!" the latter exclaimed, winking.

Sahn stuttered. "I-"

"Right, let's move quick then, before it gets any bloody colder and my arm gets even sorer." Jairo interjected, taking off his shirt. "Also wouldn't be surprised if the school came looking for us. Another reason to hurry up." Nel nodded excidetly, tossing aside her parka and boots and slipping off her shirt. After a few seconds, both became encased in a faint red glow, almost armor-like, shielding them from the cold.

Mira suddenly blushed blushed. "A-are we goin right now? We..."

Jairo sighed and rolled his eyes. "Jeez. Get over yourself, nobody's bloody judging you." he said, turning around to his sister as the uncomfortable owl faunus took off her own coat.

"Hey Sahn, why aren't you getting ready?" Nel asked, raising an eyebrow and smirking. "Not ready to join the shirtless party?"

"No, I..."

"Ugh." Jairo groaned. "She can't swim. Scared of the water, all that silk."

Nel's eyes widened in surprise. "You're afraid of the ocean?"

"Doesn't matter, we need someone to guard this place while we're gone either way." the spider faunus replied. He glanced at Sahn, who gave him a slient look of gratitude.

Once all their weapons and equipment had been put safely inside the ship, the three faunus made their way to the edge of the raft, and after taking a deep breath, plunged into the ocean below.

They say that the dead sleep so long because life has made them tired.
That the dead never wake because life is so trying.
But what about when life doesn't tire them?
What if life was too short to wear them?
What if a dead man's life was brief enough
That later, after the rot has bitten him
And the world has forgotten him,
He wakes up?
Will he ever go back to sleep?
Or will he be by then so rested
That he can see everyone else
Tire and die before him?

The Escape
A JP between Fen-kun, Stingray and Khalil

The figure rapidly approached the distant airship, fully cloaked and masked as her nevermore flew, followed by several others and hers carrying a cage containing a number of captured grimm. Behind the mask was a grin of excitement as they got closer and closer...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Archer Shortly Before Talking with Gareth
Archer came to, feeling his body return to normal as he felt the now unfamiliar natural pull of the earth. Soon after a figure moved through the wall, frowning at Archer, "When Isa told me to keep an eye on you, I hadn't expected you to outright attempt suicide." She said quietly, "Why would you talk to that girl like that if you're friends?" She pulled out a large injection needle.

"If she's involved she's at risk." Archer replied, "She's involved now, and I'd rather have her be my enemy… Inject those into my spine, did Isa show you how to do this?" The girl nodded.

"I know you're incapable of killing her, but wouldn't she be better on your side?" Archer grit his teeth as she injected the contents of the needle into his back.

"People that close to you are a weapon against you." Archer replied, feeling the violent reactions go on in his body. "Isa, Milana and Lyle are they set up?"

"Things are going well enough." The girl replied, "They got a particularly good catch and should be here soon enough."

"Thanks Moxie, my team should be breaking your sister out as we speak." Archer replied with a grateful bow.

"They better, Archer. Otherwise you'll die way before the winter ends." After the brief exchange, Moxie went into hiding, fading into the walls.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As Gareth left the room, Archer began to feel himself get closer to normal. Within his mind, he calculated the rate of improvement, and cursed the fact that he wouldn't be better for quite a while. Still, he could feel his bones get stronger, and tested himself to see if he could move, with moderate success. Archer grinned as the ship trembled, and he listened as chaos began to unfold. Moxie walked through the wall with a frown, "That guy creeps me out Archer." She said, helping Archer up.

"Let's focus on getting out." Archer responded, "I'm probably the only thing on this ship that can't handle a grimm."

"You'll be fine." Moxie replied, "I need you to just sit still and shut up, going through walls with other people takes focus." Archer relaxed his body as Moxie pulled him through the wall into the engine room. "I memorized the layout of the ship, getting to the deck should be easy."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Up above, the figure landed on the deck of the ship, and she opened the cage, letting loose a number of grimm. Three nevermore grimm circled the ship as well, with hers carrying her off the ship. The wild grimm clawed at the deck and doors, causing a high amount of noise from their roaring and destruction.

Lauren's thoughts were suddenly interrupted by raucous noise and destruction that could be from one source. "Grimm!" In that moment, she realized that the disruption could cost them their prisoner and shouted to Nara, "C'mon, let's make sure that he doesn't escape!"

Nara nodded and grabbed her weapon as she followed after Lauren. In her mind she promised herself she would not hold back this time. She had to be stronger than before.

Gareth opened his eyes being his meditation in his room when he heard the sounds of the Grimm on the ship. Standing up slowly he felt his semblance flowing through his body as he walked down the halls toward the noise. His hands began to warp and shift. Pain shot through his body as his fingers formed long black talons. The palm of his hand opened up into a blood soaked maw that began to spit out flames of blue and purple.

Suddenly the door at the end of the hall burst open and Gareth's first victims appeared. Twin ursas quickly locked their eyes on the faunus, and let out a violent roar before they charged down the hall in single file. Gareth confidently stood his ground as he held out his hands. Twin pillars of flame left from his palms and began to envelope the first ursa completely.

A snake grimm slithered into the room Archer and Moxie were in. "How many grimm did she capture." Archer muttered as Moxie pulled him to the side.

"Evidently enough." Moxie replied, "I don't fight Archer, we need to get out of here."

"If that faunus hadn't ruined my bones, we could be out of here easily, but it'll be okay, I can get us out if you can get me my things." Archer smiled confidently, prompting a look of confusion from Moxie.

"You're a lot scarier than that guy, Archer." Moxie said, setting Archer down and running through the wall to get his belongings.

The ursa roared in pain as its skin was mutated by the flames. Flesh turned to a putty like substance and the signature grimm bones began to ride unsteady waves of skin. The ursa's roar slowly transformed from a beast's painful roar to a blood curdling screech that filled the ship.

Gareth's face mouth twisted upward in a sickening smile. The faunus' forehead split open vertically as a third eye appeared. Gareth's blood trickled out of the newly made eyelid like a thick tear. Reaching up with one of his talons like arms, Gareth pressed a claw against the mutating mass.

Suddenly there was silence from the ursa as its body became slightly more stable. Its mind shattered then changed through mutation, the monster slowly turned around to face its former comrade. It's once bony skull had reformed into a large prey of prey style beak filled with the ursa's razor sharp teeth. Its body elongated as its once muscular arms had split into several smaller appendages, each tipped with jagged bone claws. Its body was asymmetric and lacked any natural form.

Gareth's horror let out a shriek before it leaped at the other ursa. Rendering its flesh with its beak and talons before charging forward out onto the main deck in a madness driven frenzy.

Gareth walked over to the badly wounded ursa and stepped on its head. "Too weak," muttered the faunus before delivering a quick stomp on its neck, crushing its throat. As the Grimm dissolved into thin air, Gareth looked around at the wood that his flames had touched. A cascade of blues, purples, and even a little pink fleshy feeling substance had formed where there should have been burn marks. After admiring the accident Gareth made way for the main deck, his claws covered in mutating energy.

Having sprinted to where Archer's cell was, Lauren and Nara unlocked and entered the cell, finding it empty. Cursing, she felt further enraged, bringing her temper to an explosive boil. Moxie appeared through the wall opposite, and looked around before meeting the gaze of Lauren. Glaring at the woman, Lauren prepared a strike before reeling back and realizing that she was a faunus. She growled, "Where's Archer?"

Moxie played a confused look, "I don't know who you're talking about, I'm just trying to get away from the grimm…" Her tone was full of fear, and her ears folded back.

Lauren replied, "The human prisoner. Where is he?"

"A human?!" Moxie said, surprised, "Th-there's a human on the ship? I-is he dangerous?"

Sighing and softening her glance, Lauren reiterated, "Yes. There is a human prisoner here. He escaped from here and is a traitor to us all. I need to find him at all costs."

Moxie began to walk forward, "I'm no good with fighting, I-I just want to get somewhere safe…"

Assuaging the mouse faunus, Lauren said, "I'll keep you safe. Come on, let's get outta this room." She beckoned the faunus forward, weapon ready for use when they'd open the door

"Let me open it first… You can attack over me if needed…" Moxie said, scurrying to the door.

Lauren nodded, and let her open the door. Moxie reached her hand through the door and locked it from the outside, and then walked through it quickly, "You're so gullible." She said as she walked through, locking Lauren in and running away to look for Archer's belongings.

Cursing, realizing she had just been fooled, Lauren gripped her trident tightly and began bashing the door with it, breaking it down with not too much effort wasted. However, the faunus had a lead on her and with that Lauren decided to check the underneath the various rooms for the prisoner.

Moxie found Archer's belongings and slung them over her shoulder, casually walking out of the room, and seeing Lauren in the hallway. "Damn it, Archer owes me a lot for this." She muttered.

After encountering the other faunus again and hearing Archer's name, Lauren narrowed her eyes. "So he put you up to this. Another faunus to use, just like me!" She outstretched her right arm and summoned a barrage of razor sharp icicles heading directly at the faunus.

Moxie sighed as the ice passed through her, "Archer doesn't see me the same way he sees you." She said with a frown, "And I'm using Archer just as much as he's using me."

"I don't quite believe that. What use do you have for that spineless coward? He's no use to anyone, not me, not faunus, not even humans."

"He has some very helpful friends and resources, and they will be bringing me someone I care about, and that is all I care about." Moxie shifted the bag, "Which is just about the only thing we have in common."

Noticing her hand shifting the bag, Lauren decided to go for a water jet rocket the bag out of reach, in case she was reaching for a weapon. "So he decided to help you. That's exactly what he did with me, and look at how well that turned out. Nothing to show for it but a delusion and betrayal!" She punctuated her words with a strike of her trident directed at Moxie.

"Oh?" Moxie replied, "You seem to be pretty healthy looking. I heard about what happened on the island, would you say your freedom is nothing?"

Struggling with her turmoil, she shouted, "To him it's nothing! Just a cog in some stupid, delusional plan. I mean, what do I expect, these are the same creatures who put us on a shitty island to call home!" Moxie simply laughed in response.

Initiating another strike, Lauren growled, "What the hell's so funny?!"

Moxie allowed the trident to pass through her, "Your life isn't some cog in the machine. Your life is what drives him to bring the cogs together."

"After what he did to me? Don't patronize me!"

"He hurt your feelings, and in return you ruined his bones and are turning him into the faunus whose goals are to kill humans."

The dolphin faunus countered angrily, "This isn't just about that! Yes, he betrayed me, a trusted ally who was cooperating with me who also happened to be a friend. I hate his guts for doing something like that. However, he is someone who is planning to be a monster and someone to direct attention from the faunus and human conflict. Without any regards to anything but himself and his goals. He is just gonna make things worse."

"You are very misinformed about what Archer plans to do." Moxie said, "I don't agree with Archer, and this is all I'll be doing for him, but I can assure you that he wants you far away from being an ally. He wants you to stay out of everything." Moxie grabbed the bag and dived into a nearby wall in one motion. From within the wall, her voice echoed, "It's possible I'll kill him when he's of no use to me though."

Nara had been distracted by the noise upstairs and a strange feeling in her body for a moment and lost track of Lauren. She felt confident and uncomfortably happy despite the fact they were under attack. She began wandering the halls randomly opening doors until she randomly stumbled into a room with a large snake Grimm and Archer in it.

Looking at the two Nara could not help but smile as she cheerfully said, "Oooo two soulless snakes battling to the death. I wonder who will win?" Archer's drug had the fox faunus in a state of euphoria that had melted away her timid nature. Her eyes darted from Grimm to human with a sharp predator like glint to them.

Archer grinned, standing up, "I do hope it's me." Archer felt something push up on his foot and his sword came up from the ground. Archer silently thanked Moxie and unsheathed his sword. The snake stuck out at him and Archer swung his sword down, feeling his bones fracture, and then regenerate. Archer dropped to his knees, and looked up at Nara, "You have such beautiful eyes Nara, they're like looking in a mirror."

"If they were like a mirror then they would be ugly," replied Nara in a joyful voice. She had no idea how bad her response was, but for some reason it made her giggle. She pulled out her weapon and started playing with it. The blade snapped forward as it transitioned to sword mode then snapped back into energy pistol mode, watching the weapon transform seemed to thrill Nara.

Archer laughed joyfully at her insult, "A monster's eyes are full of beauty." He fell back and sighed, giggling a little, "You'll remember everything when the drug wears off, but the things you do now will be, in a way, what you want to do."

The Grimm began to coil around Archer as both heads rose up into striking position. The black head then lunged for Archer as the white one waited positioned itself ready to strike when the other head was done. "Could this be the end of our villain?" asked Nara as she hopped up onto a nearby box to get a better view. She pointed her pistol at Archer and whispered "Bang" as she waited for the Grimm to finish Archer off.

The mutated Gareth walked into the light to see his creation unleashing havoc on the other Grimm. A pack of Beowulfs broke off their attack on the horror, and turned their attention on Gareth as his pet started ripping into a larger snake like Grimm in a madness fueled frenzy.

Moxie grabbed Archer's ankles from the floor and pushed him forward, through the snake's constriction onto the ground where she placed his bag. Archer took a moment to breathe before pulling out a fire dust pellet. He tossed it into one of the snake's mouth, and it exploded, leaving only one. Archer scrambled to his feet and barely avoided the next strike. He threw a pellet of dust and fire between him and Nara, creating a puff of smoke. Immediately he went forward and grabbed her by the arms, "With respect to your sister," Archer started with a smile, "I won't let you do anything you may regret." Moxie grabbed them both, and pulled them into the hull of the ship below them.

Moxie looked at Archer with scorn, and a nose bleed "Taking two people Archer?! You're stepping over bounds."

Nara laughed as she said, "Do not try to act all noble now snake. I have seen who you really are." As the faunus spoke she shoved the barrel of her weapon into Moxie or Archer and pulled the trigger. The weapon let out a soft buzzing noise and Nara threw her energy into it as it discharged a brilliant burst of energy into the target. Trigger pull to weapon discharge was less than half a second giving her victim no chance to react at this range.

Archer laughed as he felt his skin burn, and fell to his knees, still grasping Nara's arms. Tears formed in his eyes even as he laughed and looked up into Nara's eyes, "I'm not noble… just like you're not a monster." Archer coughed, "I'm sorry."

"Stop saying you're sorry! You're not! You hurt her! You torn out her heart, destroyed her trust! She sacrificed so much for you and you spit on her! She is called names behind her back and even in her face for you!" yelled Nara as she pulled the trigger again. Her strange form of bliss angered her and the result was this uncharacteristic rage building inside Nara. She wanted nothing at this point but to kill Archer for what he did, and every one of his words seemed to just anger her more.

"And now that I've done this and she hates me, she'll be able to go back and be friends with her own people…" Even with his body regenerating, Archer's body burned with pain, "I don't want her to give up anything for me, I don't want anyone to give up anything for me."

Lauren had arrived at the scene, finding Archer and Nara locked in combat and Archer injured with burns. Directing her attention to Nara, she exclaimed, "Nara!"

"It's too late she cannot…" screamed Nara at Archer before Lauren's yelling interrupted her. Looking over at Lauren, Nara pressed a button to her weapon and the blade swung into position slashing into Archer's wound. Pulling the blade from the wound, Nara pressed the sharp edge against Archer's throat. Looking at Lauren Nara said, "I can do it… I can end him. No more Archer… no more source of pain. One less evil human to hurt us." Nara looked into Lauren's eyes as if looking for approval from her friend. Meanwhile the weapon's blade began to cut into Archer's skin making a single bead of blood appear on the blade.

"If killing me solves all of your problems, then do it." Archer said with a wicked laugh, "Be a murd--" Archer grit his teeth and clenched his fists, "y-you don't want to do this…" He stammered as his grin fell, but immediately returned, "You really want to do this." Archer went into a stronger fit of laughter.

Perplexed by Nara's and Archer's strange behavior, unnaturally overjoyed with the prospect of killing Archer, Lauren stepped in and said, "What the hell?"

"It's an inside joke, Lauren." Archer said in a mocking tone, "It'd be hard to explain."

Immediately that garnered a trident dangerously close to his face, missing deliberately by half an inch. "Don't you dare patronize me like that. Isn't it enough seeing my life being ripped to shreds, or did you just need to pour salt in the wound? I don't need to be reminded of what could have been on that island!"

"Nara doesn't have the guts to kill me, just like you don't." Archer laughed, "That's the big joke here, someone who doesn't want to kill me will kill me for nothing more than wanting freedom." Moxie took the distraction to take the sedatives Archer had packed for his target on menagerie and inject them into Nara. Shortly after a hole was blown in the room and a nevermore flew in with the figure cloaked in white. Nara began to fall unconscious and Archer caught her as she fell, "Unfortunately, I don't think now is a good time for the punchline, and every comedian knows timing is key to a good joke." The nevermore flew forward and grabbed Archer and Nara in it's talons while a two headed snake grimm formed between Lauren and the pair. "I really am sorry Lauren, you should've killed me that day."

Now faced with a new challenger in the form of a Grimm, Lauren went to work on it, aiming for a slash of the trident, joined by Tilki. Before she could wonder where he had been, the snake made its move, striking Lauren with its head. Tilki was quicker, however, and stabbed the snake in its weak spot, dissolving it into dust.

Gareth watched as a two headed monster he made began to convulse violently before collapsing to the deck dead. This one he had created from merging two heavily mutated Beowulfs that had initially attacked him. Its body soon turned to dust and faded into thin air. "Too short lived," muttered the faunus as he released the head of a Beowulf from his right hand. The Grimm's face was an unrecognizable mess of bone and flesh. As soon as the beowulf had all four paws on the deck and it sprinted off in a random direct before running off the edge of the ship. Looking around at the deck empty of smaller Grimm, Gareth smiled a little as his piercing gaze locked on a nevermore. "Now for the real targets," remarked Gareth as both of his palms released balls of blue flame that he grabbed with his talons. Spreading our his wings he moved his head left and right to stretch his neck before thrusting himself into the air to engage with a nevermore.

The nevermore Gareth chose to attack was a useful distraction as his focus was locked on the poor beast as Archer and his allies escaped. The normally black creature was now a vibrant mix of blues, dark purples, and greens and two almost arm like appendages had haphazardly grown from hits chest. It was clear Gareth's work on this particular grim was much more controlled, but no less painful for the Grimm.

Thrusting a burst of energy into the beast's head, Gareth suddenly lost focus as the creature tried once again made a hard turn midair to try it shake its attacker off its back. The result was fatal to the Grimm and suddenly Gareth found himself forced to once again use his wings to not fall to his death. Flying over to the ship he landed with an exhausted sigh. He was satisfied with his work, but was a little disappointed in the escape of the other nevermores. Now he needed some rest so he headed for his chambers to record the events in his tome and get some well deserved sleep.

Outside
GAIN, NAVF, and Nara

Gaige and the twins finished getting their equipment together and left their hideout. Walking quietly through the snow, they ran right into Nilya. "Hey Nilya!" Nina called in a cheery voice.

Nilya looked over at the calling voice and forced a smile while saying, "Hello, how are you today?" Varik was standing next to her, but it was impossible to tell it was him due to the full face helmet that matched his new armor. Nilya's husband looked over at GAIN minus Archer, but did not say anything.

"Cold as high hell." Nina responded, her lifeless robotic eyes looking at Nilya. Her face was bright and cheery though, and a genuine grin spread across her face, "Archer warned us to dress warmly, but Ilexa was too stubborn and insisted we wear light clothes." The twins wore jeans and a light jacket, along with tennis shoes despite the cold.

"Just because you're twins does not mean you have to wear the same clothes. I would have worn what I believed to be better just to show I was correct," replied Nilya playfully as she turned around a little to show off her warm clothes.

"No we always wear the same clothes, it makes it harder for people to tell us apart at a glance." Nina said proudly, then shivering a bit. Gaige shook his head and pulled one of his jackets out of his bag for Nina.

"I'd prefer not getting on Archers bad side by letting you catch a cold." He said.

"You two get too worried too easily." Ilexa muttered as Nina put the jacket on, "So how've you been Nilya. Making robot friends now?"

Nilya covered her mouth with her right hand as she giggled she then said, "I am doing well, and this "robot" is my husband Varik."

"It is battle armor, " said Varik through his helmet's speaker giving it a mechanical twist. "It has a nice environmental system built it that is keeping me nice and warm as well," added the armor clad human. Despite wearing armor, Varik lacked his pair of swords he used to use. Instead an odd looking rifle was being held on his back by a magnetic clamp on his armor.

"Armor is lame." Ilexa laughed, flexing, "All you need is bulk and aura."

Nina frowned, "Don't be rude Ilexa."

"Hey I'm just tossing shade, it's not serious." Ilexa responded, "Hey Nilya, you should get your own armor set and you two could be like some kind of superhero duo."

"I will leave the armor to Varik, it is not my style," replied Nilya shaking her head.

"Not all of us were blessed with powerful semblances, or auras," replied Varik calmly. "I have to find other ways to defeat my opponents."

"I get that, what's super strength to people like Lull and Gaige who never have to lift a finger." Ilexa responded, "I'm glad Archers on those meds, or he'd be pretty scary too."

"I hate those things." Nina replied crossly, "He always acts weird after."

"Archer is on medication? Is he okay?" asked Nilya hiding her worry behind a neutral face.

"Since the island his semblance has been unstable." Gaige replied, "A friend of ours designed a kind of drug that lowers some of the less desirable emotions."

"The way he talks and smiles all the time freaks me out sometimes." Nina added in, "He doesn't cry as much in his sleep though, so there's that."

"Sorry to hear that, strange that his semblance is unstable. One would think one would be a master of their own aura. Granted from what little I know of Archer he did seem like a burdened soul. Always wanting to take the burden of the world on his shoulders alone. Failing to realize that others want to help him and not be left out. If he places all that pressure on himself I could see it crushing him," remarked Nilya sadly testing to see how his team would respond to her words.

"One cannot save the world alone… even with the most powerful of semblances," noted Varik as he played with a hologram on his left wrist.

"Even before that he was pretty emotional, he isn't cut out for all of this violent stuff." Nina said, looking a bit down, "Would've been better for him to not become a hunter if you ask me."

"Perhaps he is not, but I do not know him enough to make that call," replied Nilya softly.

"Emotions and violence often do not mix well. I will admit my own temper has gotten me in trouble," added Varik as he shut down the hologram and looked back at GIN.

"I'd say emotions win fights." Ilexa replied, "Sometimes getting amped up on anger or sadness can be a real helpful boost." She stretched, "So what are you two doing today?"

"Yes, emotions can drive your adrenaline up so your physical performance increases, but they often hinder your mental processes at the same time. An opponent can use this against you," replied Varik in a stoic tone. He then calmly added, "I am going out to do some field tests."

"Or training as most of us would put it. There are still some weaker Grimm in the area that can be used to test techniques on without much risk," added Nilya clarifying her husband's intentions.

"Are you sure that isn't an actual robot." Ilexa said sarcastically, receiving a punch from Nina in response.

"We're heading over to the faunus prison." Nina said.

"Faunus prison?" asked Varik ignoring the sarcastic response. Nilya's response was a mere slight movement of her right eyebrow upward.

"Mhm, we're going to break out some of the prisoners." Nina said casually, "Oh and Lull."

"Who is Lull?" asked Nilya gently as she remained calm.

"And why is she and the other Faunus locked up?" asked Varik.

"She used to be a teacher a few months back, you know before all that island stuff." Ilexa replied, "After some outrage due to her following orders, they pinned things on her and locked her up with the other faunus."

"Archer said that she took care of him when he was younger too." Nina added in, "I think he said she was half faunus."

"Oh yeah, he did say that." Ilexa nodded, "I wouldn't have guessed, she's pretty timid when she isn't scary. Oh!" Ilexa exclaimed, remembering the second question, "The faunus there committed crimes according to official sources, but Isa did some snooping and found that a lot of them were put there on false charges. Archer decided that was inhumane and so we're going to go let 'em out."

"I am assuming they are being locked up for being Faunus and trying to hide among humans instead of accepting exile," replied Varik his voice showing anger.

"It is morally wrong to lock one up for their appearance. We will help the best we can. What is the plan?" added Nilya her tone soft with an edge of decisiveness.

"We were going to meet with two other faunus and do this in groups." Gaige replied, "If your team is willing to help, then I can change plans, but I'll need to call Archer."

"Why would you need to call Archer?" asked Nilya her left eyebrow raising up a bit.

Varik was silent as he raised his right hand to the right side of his helmet and turned to the side.

"All things go through Archer." Gaige responded, "It keeps things running smoothly." Gaige phone rang, "How convenient." He said with a slight laugh, answering the phone, "What's up Archer."

"Bit of a change to the plan, I ended up getting kidnapped, and I kinda took Nilya's sister." Archer said quickly.

"Oh… Well Nilya is here with us now." Gaige said with a sigh.

"Well is she angry?" Archer asked.

"Not now, though I wouldn't imagine that to remain the same after you tell her what's going on." Gaige said, tossing his phone to Nilya.

"No Gaige, don--" Archer tried to say.

Hearing that everything went through Archer made Nilya roll her eyes. Then the phone rang, Nilya tried to listen but with her fox ears pinned down she lacked the ability to eavesdrop. She was ready when Gaige threw her the phone, catching the phone and bringing it up to her ear Nilya asked, "What did you do Archer?"

"Oh hey Nilya!" Archer said nervously, trying to sound cheerful, "So I was kidnapped by your sister's team."

Nilya frowned as she said, "Continue." She was not planning to admit her part in getting him into that situation. She hoped it would have been a good reunion between him and Lauren, but she knew now it had not gone well.

"Well I escaped, and uh, took, uh." His voice got quiet and high pitched, "your sister... " Archer quickly added in, "She's 100% fine, but she definitely broke more than a few of my ribs…"

Amane & Fei had finally found where Varik & Nilya were. Fei was still in his bundled coat, so he was keeping himself warm. Amane had on a purple scarf around her neck, & nothing else. "Finally, we've been looking for you guys everywhere." Fei whined, catching his breath.

Amane looked around, recognizing some faces. "Hm…I'm sorry, I never got your names."

"I-I believe their names are Gaige, Nina & Ilexa." Fei tried remembering, thinking back to how they met on the island. "Um, what are you guys doing here?"

"Archer is getting chewed out." Nina giggled.

"Pretty sure Nilya's eyes are showing killing intent, should we intervene?" Ilexa whispered.

"Nah, it's fine. Uh, Fei right? You're on Nilya's team? Wanna go do a jail breakout?" Nina asked.

"Huh?" Fei was a little confused by Nina's question out of nowhere. Jail break? "Um, yes, I'm on Nilya's team. Jail break? What did I miss?" Fei asked. Amane listened in to see what they were talking about.

"Nina it's not a party…" Gaige said.

"We're gonna go break out a bunch of faunus. 27 to be exact!" Nina exclaimed, "Oh and Lull."

Fei didn't quite understand what the heck Nina explained. It was rather short too. "Gaige, was it? Explain what we're doing. Don't skim any details." Amane asked Gaige, crossing her arms as she didn't have any patience.

"We're going to free a bunch of falsely imprisoned faunus. Archer wants us to do that while he is away, and we're breaking Lull out because Archer has an attachment." Gaige replied, "It should be easy enough, but we have to make sure to make a scene."

"We gotta break stuff!" Ilexa said excitedly.

"Sweet." Amane was looking forward to breaking stuff.

"Um, who is Lull, if I may ask?" Fei asked timidly.

"She was the teacher who slept during lecture and taught survival through her shadow thing." Nina responded.

"Oh! I'd sure love to meet her!" Fei smiled, feeling excited to meet someone else.

"I'm more interested in breaking stuff." Amane turned away, her scarf fluttering in the snowy weather.

"Not a good idea." Gaige responded to Fei, "There's a good chance she might try to kill whoever gets her, and her semblance is very hard to deal with. Since Archer's gone, I'll be the only one going for her." Gaige yawned, "You look like you have a weak stomach, have you ever seen someone die Fei?"

"!" Fei frowned upon hearing this question. Perhaps he's asking him this to make sure he's capable of fighting. He simply looked down, remembering his old friend from long ago.

"Lull has." Gaige continued, "She's killed under orders in the most brutal of ways. Her last two targets were eaten alive." Gaige looked gravely at Fei, "And she would've killed a third if Archer hadn't stopped her, just him, if any of us had tried, we would likely have been casualties as well, so does she sound like the type of person you want to get to know?"

Fei brushed his arm, thinking hardly. If she's dangerous, maybe there's a reason. "...I won't know unless I try." He said softly.

"Such a softie." Amane pointed out.

Nina and Ilexa put an arm around Fei, "Awe, don't listen to Gaige, he's always so grumpy when people are having a good time." Ilexa said, "If you want, you can stick with us, we'll keep you safe."

Nina giggled, "It's adorable how much of a softy you are."

Fei blushed, being surrounded by the sisters. "I-I'm fine! I can handle myself." he sputtered out, a little nervous.

Amane walked up to Gaige to gain a little more information. "So what's this attachment that Archer has?"

"She raised him." Gaige replied passively.

"Look how embarrassed he is Gaige!" Nina said, both twins tightening their hold, "Would you like to try on some cute clothes? I totally have some things that would look absolutely great on you."

Fei was left helpless against the twin's cute assault. He was frozen with red across his face & didn't know what to say.

Amane chose to ignore the weird display.

"Hey Gaige, can we keep him?" Nina asked.

"I don't care, just ask his team if it's okay." Gaige responded.

"Hey Amane, can we take him? Just for a little while?"

"Do I look like his babysitter? & keep me out of your weird fantasies." Amane wanted nothing to do with the twin's playful attitude.

Help me…

Nina cheered, and the two of them began dragging Fei away, "You're going to look absolutely adorable in a dress I got Archer." She said as they carried him off.

"Hurry up you two!" Gaige called, followed by a sigh, "My apologies Amane, they aren't the most relaxed."

Amane watched as the twins dragged Fei away, who looked like he was calling for help. She sighed as well. "It's fine as long as they don't dress me up. I choose my own clothes." She responded, adjusting her scarf & butterfly accessories.

"Don't worry, they don't target people like us." He laughed.

"Why did you take Nara?" growled Nilya as her facial expression shifted to a menacing snarl. "And what did you do that provoked her enough to break your ribs."

"You're getting mad." Archer said in an exasperated tone, "She got hurt when I was fighting the team and so I gave her some of my medicine, y'know, to help her heal, but during my escape she kind of caught the other effect of it, which sorta made her crazy?" A nervous laugh on the other end, followed by, "We took her to get it out of her system and make sure she didn't hurt anyone, but uh, if Lauren calls you, I didn't mean to have that many grimm on the ship…"

Varik suddenly looked over at his wife and muttered a curse word that could barely be heard thanks to his helmet. Seeing his wife this angry made Varik very uneasy. His gaze locked on the faunus as he ignored the fact the rest of his team had just arrived.

Nilya was silent for a second as she tried to control her temper. The air around her began to darken unnaturally and small ribbons of pure darkness began to appear. After several seconds the fuming faunus growled, "So you attacked my sister, drugged her to try in fix wounds you inflicted on her, and then kidnapped her to "protect" her because your drugs made her crazy…"

Nilya closed her eyes and took several deep breaths before continuing in a slightly calmer tone, "Where are you, Archer? I need to retrieve Nara before you accidently harm her further."

"I wasn't protecting her, I was keeping her from doing something she would regret." Archer said, "Totally different, I think. And coming to get her isn't really a good idea, we're kind of hiding in a shady area on Menagerie. Isa calls it her cozy hovel, but the police keep patrolling around, and I'm pretty sure nobody here is friendly." The sound of yelling and fighting blared distantly over the phone, "I swear to you she's totally safe, and totally free to go whenever, but uh, if you really want I can send her on a nevermore."

"Your solution to get my wounded drugged up sister here is to put her on the back of a Grimm!" replied Nilya her fury returning. "No, Archer I am coming to get her. I am not leaving my sister's safety in the hands of a bumbling idiot! Perhaps it is not safe to a foolish brick headed human like you, but I assure you Nara is much safer with me. Now give me your location!" replied the faunus as her semblance continued to gather around her.

"I definitely can't do that." Archer responded, "You're definitely going to hurt me. I'll uh, take her home when I'm done here, I don't even think you can make it here before I do the thing." Archer stumbled over his words, "Oh hey Isa! Here talk to Nilya."

Faintly in the background a voice was heard, "Why did you call Nilya?"

"Uh, she's with Gaige…"

The new voice took the phone, "Archer go wake up Nara." She muttered, "Hello, Nilya?"

"You need a better answer than Archer had because my patience is about gone," replied Nilya.

"Yeah, he can do that." Isa replied. "Nara is perfectly fine, her injuries are gone, and I took care of the meds in her system. If you want to retrieve her, I can take her somewhere for you to pick her up, but if you're with Gaige, you're probably on the mainland, which means it'll be difficult for you to get here in any timely fashion." Isa paused for a moment, "It wouldn't be good for you to show your face around here anyways, would it. You have a secret to keep do you not?"

"I will be there as soon as I can," replied Nilya sharply. She hesitated for a second before adding, "I find it humorous that you are all so concerned about me being able to hide when you are harboring a human whose plans always get those around him hurt. The "genius" has afforded to scorch out the eyes of one of his teammates while burning down half a camp, get himself locked in a cage when he was safe mere minutes before, and now this. Sorry if I do not trust him with the well being of my twin. Give me the location and I will give you the time I can get there."

Varik made his wrist hologram appear and he furiously typed on it for a second. The human's wealth was not the only asset he had gained recently. His deal with each of the Brackmans opened up many resources for him, and he hoped it was worth the cost.

"Of the situations listed, how often has Archer been the aggressor?" Isa responded, "Are you aware that even now, when he wanted nothing to do with getting kidnapped, they attacked him and ruined his bones?" Isa sighed on the other end, "Archer has you and your sister on his list. He's more likely to die then let something happen to her, and about the eyes. Have you ever removed your own eyes out of guilt?" Isa asked, "It's not something I can do. Unless you can get here in the next, hour or so, knowing our location won't help much."

"Where are you going?! And self mutilation to solve guilt only proves my point further! I do not trust Archer's ability to protect my sister. I do not care that he does not want to harm her, he already admitted to hurting her, drugging her, and then kidnapping her! His plans and actions are one of a fool who gets himself and others around him needlessly hurt," growled Nilya.

"You think his plan involved getting kidnapped?" Isa replied, "Do you think that he had known such a thing was coming, he would've acted differently? From what I'm told, Lauren knew details that he'd given you, do you think if she hadn't, he would have been less inclined to resist?" Isa paused for a moment, before continuing, "Nara's team attacked him, and despite him severely holding back, your sister was still a casualty. He gave her a dose of medicine to fix that, and because of that, he now has deteriorated bones, several broken ribs, and he has to increase the dose on his medicine in order to keep from breaking down. You don't have to trust Archer to protect your sister, and even though I'm here to watch over her, I don't expect you to trust me either, but what are you going to do? When you get her, are you going to protect her from this hell of an island? What about the humans who are actively dangerous to her? She's not any safer with you than she is with us, and Archer is just as willing to give up his life to keep her alive, as you are to give up yours." She paused for a moment and finally said, "If you are really worried about it, I'll arrange for her to be sent to the mainland with false documents. I can certainly call some favors and pull some strings to get her anywhere you'd like."

"You underestimate me, and you fail to understand me. I do not trust my sister's well being with either of you, and yes she is safer with me. It is quite clear you are trying to prevent me from coming to get her. You say it is too dangerous for me to come get her then you offer up a worse solution to "get her to me." I am guessing Archer is up to something that you do not want me present for. At this point, I do not care what happened or what you are doing. I sense my sister is in danger, and that is my concern. If you are determined to hold onto Nara understand this: whatever harm comes to her I will do doubly to you both, " growled Nilya. Varik stopped what he was doing as he listened to his wife. He also watched as her semblance modified her appearance as her hair slowly turned black starting from her roots as well as a strange amount of energy growing behind her.

"Should anything happen to her, I would love to provide you with the knife to make that happen." Isa replied in an eerily wicked, yet low tone, "With friends like you, I'm sure it is certainly Archer's fault that things go wrong, but I would like to personally compliment you, you realize I'm trying to keep you separate. Since you don't care about Archer though, I'd be happy to arrange a safe spot to pick your sister up from, without his knowledge of course. I can't have you playing with my toys during my own game." Her voice was low and calm, "Would you like to talk to your sister? I'm sure she's awake by now."

Amane was listening in on Nilya & noticed the sudden change in her appearance. From what she heard, Nilya didn't seem to be taking it well. That hair color was new too. Amane couldn't help but see what happened next.

After the other faunus finished talking Nilya replied in a firm tone, "Yes I would, and Archer is not a friend. An associate or classmate at best."

Isa took the phone and walked into the room with Nara, who was in the process of trying to attack Archer, "Oh hey Isa, she woke up, and I don't think she's happy."

"Of course I am not happy you terrible human. You did this to me," cried Nara still trying to recover from her drug induced sleep.

"Your sister is on the phone." Isa responded, handing her the phone.

"Is she still mad?" Archer whispered to Isa, who nodded in response.

Nara grabbed the phone and tried retelling the entire story from meeting Archer to being captured in a minute. Her sobbing tone further made her words incoherent as she spoke to Nilya.

Nilya immediately moved swiftly away from the group to get out of earshot of the others. "Settle down Nara, first are you ok?" asked Nilya in a concerned tone.

"No! Archer did something to me that made me feel and act weird after he broke my tail. Then he kidnapped me!" spurting out the still disoriented Nara as she tried to glare at Archer with tear soaked eyes.

"Are you still hurt? And where are you?" asked Nilya.

"I… still feel a little weird but I am not in pain. Why all the questions? Why are you not more concerned? I bet it's that human is making you…" replied Nara before Nilya interrupted her.

"Nara! I am concerned and you need to get yourself back together. I know you are stressed, scared, and confused, but you need to keep calm and collected. I am going to come help you as soon as I can, but until then you need to stay safe, " directed Nilya.

Nara was silent for a second then softly asked, "What about Archer?"

"I will deal with him later. For now your safety is my only concern. Do not do anything rash or drastic," replied Nilya firmly.

"I can take care of myself. I'm a huntress too you know," protested Nara.

"We all need help at times Nara. I just want you safe… we just found each other and I cannot lose you again. We have all those plans and so much time to make up," replied Nilya softly. As she spoke to her sister her semblance faded until she was mostly back to normal.

"...Fine I will stay safe," muttered Nara with a sigh.

"Okay I need to go, but we will speak soon," said Nilya softly.

"Nilya, please… Okay… goodbye," whispered Nara sadly as she lowered the phone from her ear. She softly muttered under her breath, "Stupid humans ruin everything."

Nilya sighed as she turned around and headed back to the others. She was still holding onto the phone in case Isa or Archer wanted any last words.

Archer took the phone, "Uh, Nilya, could you make sure the twins actually have a jacket on for me? Since you're already there and all…"

"I will pass on your request, and Archer we need to talk alone… in person," replied Nilya in a much calmer tone than before. She hoped Archer and Isa would keep Nara safe for everyone's sake. Deciding enough had been said for now Nilya hung up the call as she reached the gathered group. Tossing the phone back to Gaige, Nilya said in a threatening tone, "First off understand there are a few people I will protect like that. Any of you try to hurt them or take them from me… I will hunt you down, and when I find you I will make you pay."

Her facial expression then shifted from threatening to serious as she addressed Gaige, "Now I know Archer had a plan, but if you intend for us to help we need to know it. From what I have seen Archer's plans have flaws that cause major issues during execution, and invite unnecessary risk. I will keep as open mind as I can despite recent events. I will not allow our team to follow the plan if I find risks you are unwilling to mitigate through modification of the plan."

"I've already explained what we are about to do." Gaige replied, "Though I'm sure you got some lie or another from Archer on what he is currently doing." Gaige shivered sighed and sprinkled some red dust to warm his clothes, "Archer intends ultimately to take out people who harm others. Essentially, he wants to hunt human and faunus monsters."

Archer sighed as he put his phone in his pocket, "So uh, hey Nara, are you feeling okay?" He asked nervously.

Nilya stared at Gaige a second before saying, "I know the what, I want to know the how. I need to know what the plan is for the prison break." She ignored Gaige talking about Archer, she was tired of hearing about Archer from others.

"We're going to enter through one of four entrances that we will make through explosives set by two faunus that are helping us. The resulting chaos will allow us to split up any of the present guards and preferably keep them alive. Once we secure all of the target faunus, we will take them to a small, deserted mining town and wait for Isa to deliver them to their families on menagerie." Gaige replied, "It's an incredibly simple operation, and I have a map of where our target faunus are." Gaige took a paper out of his bag and handed it to Nilya, "If your team assists, we could cover more of the area a lot safer."

"I hope you plan to conduct the mission under the cover of night. It would give us an advantage," replied Nilya.

Varik walked up to the two and held out his wrist to display a hologram of the prison. "Public records can be a wealth of knowledge if you know where to look and who to ask," said Varik. He pulled up several submenus and added, "I would recommend striking at 3 AM due to both the advantage of night and it is scientifically shown to be the time human's natural drive to sleep is at its strongest. Most of the power is supplied via the nearby power plant. If we disable the main power source a second team should be able to disable the primary generator that should be located here." Varik pointed to a basement close to east wall.

"Shipping manifests to the prison do list a significant amount of flashlights and spotlights, but those can be defeated kinetically with ease. An associate of mine has some experimental night vision enhancing devices I can borrow for those of us not gifted with natural night vision, but I will need them back," continued Varik hoping he was helping push the idea of striking at night. "Finally I have a pilot with his own transport for hire I can acquire to give us superior mobility," offered Varik.

"Vehicles are too easy to spot." Gaige replied, "We'll be using grimm to get across the water. "If we have a time to keep, it needs to happen at a very specific time, which puts night out of the question. We aren't saving faunus just to save faunus, Archer wants to make it very well known what is happening."

Nilya and Varik stared at Gaige for a second before Nilya, "Stop being a fool who just follows Archer's plans without thinking for yourself. This plan already contradicts itself, and is filled with needless risk. You want to do it during the day so people notice, but want to use Grimm because "vehicles are too easy to spot." I doubt Archer has really thought about the implications of using Grimm to rescue faunus will bring. Let us rescue falsely accused faunus with the aid of the nightmares that haunts the dreams of every child on this world. I am sure that will foster all sorts of good feelings toward faunus."

Nilya continued to speak her tone firm and decisive, "Also getting the prisoners to ride Grimm will be difficult as well. It is very likely many will see them and try to flee, resulting in further chaos that will hurt our efforts to rescue the innocent. So we will NOT use Grimm, period. Now what type of statement does he want to make that requires a daytime rescue that increases the chance for fatalities?"

Varik added, "I would not risk my team's life on a lackluster pilot. He is the best off the grid pilots you will find. He will be able to insert and extract us without problem."

"We aren't using real grimm." Gaige replied, "Isa can use her semblance to create them. If we're spotted from below, nobody will expect faunus to be on grimm. When people see faunus on grimm, it shows courage, strength, and can make the faunus look strong in the public eye. You have an island with defeated faunus who have to live in a slum, I'd think a little bit of, ad the twins would say, hype would be very beneficial. Grimm aren't the only monsters in this world Nilya, and we're going to bring that to light."

Nilya glared at Gaige, "Has Archer been feeding you these fantasies? This is the real world and unlike you I've had to face the pains and judgements of humanity on my kind. The news will be Faunus control Grimm to attack prison… followed by are Faunus soulless like the Grimm? Are they monsters? Perhaps they are more like animals or Grimm than we realized. No, Gaige I will not allow Archer's little fantasy of how the world will work make my kind's plight worse. He already did that once on a smaller scale. We take the safe route to insure Archer's brilliance doesn't demonize my kind more."

"Attacking and freeing our kind shows strength enough. We do not need some foolish display. This is what I mean by Archer being reckless. He goes for the over the top dramatics and puts everyone in more danger than needed," replied Nilya.

"The aircraft is much faster as well. My contact can get us in and out before your Grimm could reach the prison. This reduces the risk of reinforcements arriving. Also anyone seeing a Grimm large enough or enough Grimm to transport us will report the activity immediately. As close as we are to Vale and Beacon, that risks inviting an experienced hunter team to our location, " added Varik. He then sighed and added , "I understand Archer's desire to make a huge impact, but Nilya is right the risk of backfire is too great. It would be better to conduct several less dramatic actions that could not translate into making the faunus appear any more animal or Grimm like than the human government tries to label them."

Gaige looked at the two of them, "I think you misunderstand my stance on this. I'm not doing it for Archer, I'm doing it of my own volition, and my own intentions. If you'd really like to take the faunus, then please, by all means, they aren't of my concern. Archer is the one that cares about what happens with your people, my goals are independent of what humans are faunus think. As far as I'm concerned, humans and faunus are as much monsters as the grimm, and pretending that your people have the moral high ground because they happened to be on the losing side is arrogant. Faunus are not pure, they're not special, they have just as much potential for monstrosity as humans do. I saw your intent to kill earlier, you're just as apt to violence is we are." Gaige grinned, lowering his voice, "And you know, despite how good Archer is at heart, wouldn't it be so fun to see someone like him turn into a monster?"

Nilya glared at Gaige and said, "I know that the heart of faunus and humans are the same. Our physical differences is all that divides us into two different races. Both are capable of great good and evil. Right now however the faunus are being oppressed, and matters are getting worse. Humanity has already decided to label us as lessers, animals, or whatever billion other names that have been created to degrade us. I fear that of given enough reasons humanity will decide that the world is better off without faunus. Making us appear as friends with the Grimm is a d*** good excuse to start this line of thinking."

Nilya let out a long sigh before adding, "I do not understand what the big deal with Archer is. He is a hunter with a huge guilt complex and bad planning skills. He is no more noteworthy than anyone else here at this time. Granted I am beginning to think that many around here just like having him around so they can play some sick game on him."

"The world is better off without humanity in some people's eyes." Gaige replied, "In my own opinion, humans are going to have the thought no matter what is done, so why not put a little fear in them. As for Archer, he's certainly not a toy, but he is incredibly fun to have around."

"Hey, I know that humans & faunus have their differences, but can we get back to the subject at hand? Talking about who's done what isn't gonna help right now, & right now we still have a bunch of faunus & Archer on the island." Amane voiced out, getting irritated by this conversation going nowhere.

Nilya looked over at Amane and nodded before saying, "Perhaps we are drifting off subject to discuss the reasoning of why we differ on opinion. The fact is your plan to save the faunus is flawed. We will not be using Grimm, fake or not. Archer does not speak for my kind. We are stronger than you humans think, and we do not need your kind trying to show our strength for us. Thus I am taking control of this operation as a faunus. Your team will focus on rescuing Archer's friend. I will use illusions to make my team all appear as faunus."

"We will strike at night as faunus are stronger at night than humans. We will show them our strengths through execution of the mission. I am extending the goal to include sparing all guards that have no part in immoral actions. We will do it in a matter they know they have been spared. We will not sink to the level of the monsters you want to imply we are through the use of Grimm. The message we leave needs to be clear. No longer will we tolerate being treated like lowly animals, and at the same time prove our words by showing compassion. Not all faunus are good so any faunus locked up for actual horrible crimes must be left behind, " said Nilya with a strong tone of authority.

There was a moment of tense silence as Gaige thought for a moment. Fei & the twins returned from their short trip, with Fei dressed up in some pink dress. He just continued blushing & kept quiet. "Mm…"

"You don't have to be so bashful, I bet if you tried, you could steal away that girl Amane's heart." Nina said to Fei discreetly.

Ilexa grinned wickedly, "Or angsty robot there."

"I-I don't wanna hear it…" Fei muttered out, embarrassed just to be seen. Amane looked over at Fei's direction. Then she turned back.

"You can be confident, you look absolutely great." Nina said, "She sees it too." Nina said with a grin.

"I'm in a dress… Can I take this off now?" Fei pleaded.

"Wow, you're kind of a pervert." Ilexa laughed, "It's so cold out here, who would you want to do that."

These girls are torturing him, aren't they. "I never asked to be in a dress…" Fei sighed.

Ilexa shrugged with a grin, "We got permission."

Nina looked at Amane thinking, "She's super cute too, I bet she'd look amazing in sundress."

"...I don't think that's a good idea." Fei feared for the twins. Amane isn't the easiest person to talk to.

Nina had already walked off to talk with Amane, "Hey, you know you're a real cutie." Nina said informatively.

Amane's attention was taken by Nina. She glared at her, as if already knowing her intention. "You're not dressing me up."

"But you could be absolutely adorable, people would fall over you!" Nina urged.

"People would run away the second they got to know me." She added.

"I want to put you in the middle of a room and see the guys fawn over you." Nina said in a serious, intense tone.

"I'll chase them out." She retorted.

"Oh do you prefer girls? Or do you have someone?" Nina asked.

Amane stood closer to Nina & looked at her in the eye. "Listen, we can keep throwing answers at each other, but I don't have that time right now. I'm more concerned about the mission than my social life. So just drop it." When she finished, she turned around & walked back to Gaige & the others.

Fei walked over to Nina, looking in Amane's direction. "I tried to warn you."

"I'm not going to give up until she has peaked her adorable potential." Nina said with a determined glare, then turning to look at Fei, "And you're going to try every one of them on until I find the perfect one for her."

At this point Fei was already crying tears. "I just want to know about the mission details…"

Nina gave him a hug and pat his back "It's okay, you're going to be a real killer."

That wasn't the answer he was expecting. He looked down a bit. "I'm not trying to be a killer…"

"You're going to kill all the ladies." Nina continued, ignoring the comment.

"Ugh…" She never gives, does she.

"People shouldn't go through life feeling like people will hate them." Nina replied, "And it's your job as her teammate to help me help her."

"You & I aren't even on the same team." Fei mentioned.

"You're in one of my dresses, you're totally on my team." Nina said with a serious glare.

Fei just stayed quiet in fear of Nina's glare. He began walking over to the others, mostly interested about what they're discussing, but mainly to escape from Nina & Ilexa clutches.

Varik looked over at Fei while Nilya was engaged in a heated debate with Gaige. The man shook his head and asked, "Did you lose a bet in the short time you have been here? Or did you let them force you into that thing?"

"I don't wanna talk about it…" Fei said defeated.

"You need to stop being pushed around so easily Fei," replied Varik.

Fei didn't say a word & listened in on the conversation.

"I suppose expecting you to understand wasn't really a reality." Gaige responded, taking advantage of the change in tone, "Nina, Ilexa, let's go, we have a schedule to keep." The twins ran up and Gaige gave a polite bow, "Best of luck to you and your efforts, and it is unfortunate that we did not align." Gaige said, as he and the twins began to walk away towards the prison.

Nilya's fake expression reappeared of neutrality as she spoke, "More humans using faunus as an excuse to push their own agenda."

Varik looked at his wife and asked, "Should I stop them?"

"No, it is not worth risking our lives," replied Nilya.

Amane sighed a relief now that they seem to be moving things along. Her scroll vibrated, she dug into her pocket to check. She received a message &, reading it carefully, put her scroll away. She turned to Nilya. "So we'll be picking up your sister then?" She asked.

Nilya looked over at Amane before saying in a cold tone, "I do not know exactly where she is at this time, but I intend to find out… Varik call the pilot we are leaving."

Nilya looked over at Amane, Fei, and finally Varik for a second before saying, "I need some time alone to think. Please no one follow." She then turned and walked off and disappeared into the shadows of some trees.

Amane watched as Nilya left the group to be alone. "Hey, Varik, can I talk to you for a second…?" Fei asked Varik, tugging at his arm. Amane looked up at the sky, thinking to herself.

Varik turned to Fei and said, "Go change out of that dress you look ridiculous."

Fei nodded & chuckled, taking cover somewhere to take off the dress. He came back with the dress folded, looking over at Amane. "Can we talk alone?"

"Yes, sorry that thing was annoying me," said Varik as he turned and began walking away motioning for Fei to follow.

Fei followed Varik & looked back, making sure Amane wasn't listening. He looked back at Varik, ready to talk. "You've noticed something strange about Amane, right?"

"Yes, but it seems like everyone has been acting strange lately, except you," replied Varik as he glanced over toward Amane. His eyes hidden behind the helmet.

Amane was looking at her scroll, seeming oblivious to her surrounding. "Do you know anyone named Paige?" Fei continued.

"Name sounds a little familiar. Nilya mentioned running into him, but she did not say much about him," replied Varik as he looked back at Fei. "Five minutes till our ride arrives," added Varik suddenly.

"...I feel like she's hiding something from us." Fei finally said. "I tried asking her something, & I think she tried avoiding the question."

Varik replied by asking, "And you are not hiding something from the group?"

Fei scratched his head, confused at Varik's doubt. "I don't get it. I don't really have anything to hide, other than my need to help."

"My point is we are not completely open books to each other. We all have issues and skeletons we like to keep in our closet Fei. That being said I am worried about Amane, and I am honestly not sure if we can trust her to be reliable in combat. Granted at the same time I have beginning to have doubts about you as well, but for different reasons," replied Varik.

"Heh…" Fei tried to laugh it off, feeling inadequate. "Am I really that much of a pushover?"

"You allowed those two girls to humiliate you by putting you in a dress then parade you around. They tried to tease me and Amane, but only used mere words, why do they single you out for such a humiliation? If you want to be the one that people look to for protection you need to act like it. Honestly the way you act makes people feel like they need to protect you… or you're someone to victimize, " replied Varik. "You do not have to be mean or violent like some of us. You do need to show confidence, strength, and valor."

"..." Fei held his left arm, contemplating Varik's words. "...I don't really care what others think of me. A pushover, a weakling, a victim. It's fine for me as long as I can protect those I love. If it makes them happy, I'm okay being humiliated." he smiled, feeling a little better from his own words & Varik's as well.

"Just know when it comes down to it, those others might not see you as someone who can protect them. Do not be shocked if they seek help from others instead of you. Sorry Fei, I know I am being brutally honest here, but the future is looking darker and I am not sure if I can rely on you when everything goes to ****. I fear you will just… break at the worse possible time," said Varik as he wondered if Fei was really ready for the coming conflicts.

Fei kept smiling despite Varik's honesty. "I've been through hell already."

He just stood there, smiling like the idiot he is while those words rang through the air. Despite everything that Fei's been through, he still puts on a smile in times of crisis. "I think we've talked enough. Let's get our team together." He suggested.

Varik lifted an eyebrow at Fei and said, "I will trust you on that one then. Anyway let us get Amane, Nilya will come when she is ready. Transport will be here very soon."

When Fei turned around to go get Amane, she was suddenly gone. Surprised, Fei looked around to spot her, but she was nowhere in sight. "Uh, V-Varik? She's gone!" He shouted in Varik's direction.

Varik looked around and then shouted back, "Where does her tracks in the snow lead?"

Fei looked around the snow where Amane was earlier, but… "There's no tracks…" Where did she go…?

"That is strange," muttered Varik as he pulled out his scroll and messaged Amane asking where she was. It was then a plain grey small airship seemed to appear out of nowhere from the direction of Vale. It was skimming just above the trees at a seemingly reckless speed. Stopping in mid air above Varik its abnormally quiet engines shifted downward as it maneuvered to land in the snowy field off to the side of Varik and Fei. It looked like any other small transport from a distance, and its unassuming factory grey paint job further hid the truth.

"Where is Amane?" asked Nilya who seemed to just appear out of the nearby treeline. Her fox like ears turning side to side as to listen for sounds of the missing woman as her fluffy tail casually swayed side to side as she walked toward the transport.

It looked like their transport was here, but still no sign of Amane anywhere. Nilya had just come back. Fei wa getting worried. "S-should we go look for her?" He asked.

Nara did not answer Archer for several long seconds as she stared at the ground. She finally answered in a firm tone, "I'm fine."

"Thank god." Archer said, sighing in relief, "And your tail? Is it healed up?"

"It's fine, and even if it wasn't I would heal it myself," replied Nara.

"Of course you can heal yourself." Archer muttered, "Are there any questions you have for me? I suppose I owe you that."

Nara was silent for a second before asking, "Why are acting all concerned? A few hours ago you broke someone's heart as if it did not matter."

"If she worried about me, she'd put herself in danger." Archer replied, "I prefer you all to stay safe. I figured it's fair to talk with you without my meds, but as soon as you're done, I'll have to go back to them, and I'll be just like I was on the boat."

"Wait, you're saying that you wanted Lauren to hate you so she wouldn't put herself in danger?" asked Nara lifting an eyebrow.

"I didn't want her to hate me, but I didn't expect to get kidnapped, and I definitely didn't expect her to already know that I was starting something." Archer replied.

"Then why make her so upset? Why hide secrets from her? Why are you doing this anyway?" asked Nara rapidly. Her tone and speed of talking made it sound like one giant run on question.

"I'm doing this because I want to." Archer replied, "It's the best I can do."

"Why do you want to do all this, and how do you know it's the best you can do?" asked Nara completely confused by Archer's words. "Also why the crazy pills? Those things are…" Nara shivered as as a cold feeling ran down her spine. "Not right, you should not be taking them!"

"Your semblance heals, mine kills." Archer replied simply, "Even now, it's difficult to keep myself from destroying this building and the people around it. I'm not a protector, I'm unable to control myself, so I'll do what I can do. I'll get rid of the people who purposely hurt others. The pills are all that keep me from falling apart while I do this."

"Why does pills that force you to be happy make keep you from destroying everything?" asked Nara.

"Anything else fuels my semblance. The more guilt, anger, or sadness I feel, the more it goes out of control, and all it does is break people." Archer began to shake, and the room began to feel heavier. Isa didn't hesitate to run up to Archer and sedate him.

"That will have to conclude your question session." She replied, "Archer has to be in top condition if he's going to be entertaining the crowds, would you like me to take you back to your team?"

Nara shook her head and said, "Archer does not need to do anything." Standing up the room's lights began to dim as Nara absorbed their faint energy. Soon the lights were so dim they could barely light a foot in front of them. "He is not ready for any of this," the faunus muttered as she finished absorbing energy. The lights slowly went back to their original state and Nara said, "I need to see my sister right now."

Isa slung Archer over her shoulder, "Can't know he's not ready until he fails." Isa giggled a little bit, "I always love to see humanity at its finest, that's why I do this if you were wondering. I just love humans. If you want to see your sister, I'll certainly leave you with your team."

"Take me to my team then," sighed Nara.

"Are you afraid of heights?" Isa asked, lifting a hatch into an underground tunnel.

"No," replied Nara.

Isa carried carried Archer down into the tunnel, motioning for Nara to follow. They went down the tunnel and after a while came up into a section where numerous grimm were caged and Milana sat reading a magazine, "Hey Isa, Moxie already left."

"That's fine, I need you to send this one to her team, I'll send her on my personal Nevermore." Isa said, "And take Archer to get ready, I expect him to have twice the dosage this time around." A boarbatusk grimm walked up and Isa put Archer over it's back and looked to Nara as it walked away with him, "Now I'm sure you're certainly revving up to say something, but I've achieved a lot with the resources I have here, and my little collection of grimm is all in the name of killing them. Now, I'd prefer if you didn't say anything about Archer to your team, nothing good at least, I know how much you hate humans, and it only makes sense for you to continue to do so." A small, white nevermore landed beside them, "If your little friends try to take my toy away, I'm truly unsure what I'd do, but I could think of ways to make them take his place, so consider which you value more, a human or your beautiful team."

"I do not have anything good to say about Archer. Do not threaten my team, I may be weak, but the others are not," replied Nara her ears lowering in response to Isa's threat.

"It's not a threat." Isa replied, "If I have nothing to worry about than, all is fine and we are friends in the loosest terms. Just tell your team Archer kidnapped you, and that you escaped. Oh," Isa grinned, "And let me give you and gift for being such and delightful guest. Archer is setting the person free that murdered the other half of Lauren's old team, I'm sure you'd like her to know, as a friend and all."

"Why tell me? Why not tell Lauren directly?" asked Nara as she carefully approached the Nevermore. This was startling information, and Nara wondered why she was told this by this woman. She then climbed on the Nevermore's back to insure she was not carried in its claws.

"It's of no consequence to me if she knows, but for you, the knowledge is much for valuable. I don't intend to go out of my way for such a thing." Isa pet the nevermore's face, "Oh, and as a faunus to another faunus, I feel a certain obligation to offer you at least a little information, and I'd be willing to offer more upon request."

Nara shifted uncomfortably on the monster. "I know I should request for you to give me as much information as you are willing to, but I honestly do not want to hear more," replied the faunus softly. She hesitated for a few seconds before asking, "What information are you willing to tell me?"

"I'm not going to give up any more free information." Isa replied, "Though I'm always willing to trade, and I can use any information. You ask me a question, and I'll always get you answer, whether that's on Archer, his team, you, your team, I can get eyes anywhere." She grinned, "Preferably I'd love for you to get that girl Lauren's thoughts on Archer, I'd be willing to pay a good deal for it."

Nara frowned and said, "Ask her yourself if you want to know them. Last time we talked she was still very upset."

"Fair enough. If it's any consolation for her, I'll be making sure Archer gets what he deserves." Isa spoke with a grin, "It'll be exciting when he finally shows his true humanity, just like you know he, like all humans, has. Then the world will make sense again for you, the humans will be proven bad, and you'll be able to comfort Lauren with the knowledge that it wasn't her fault."

Nara did not answer for a second as she thought of what to say. Shaking her head the fox faunus asked, "How do you get this thing to move?"

Isa snapped her fingers and the beast began to move, "I know where your friends are, so she will take you right to them, well, close. I can't have you seen with my nevermore."

"You wouldn't want Gareth to see your nevermore anyway…" muttered Nara remembering Gareth talking about his interest in that particular type of Grimm.

"I hope you can swim." Isa replied, snapping her finger once more, causing the Nevermore to take off towards her team.

"Why?" asked Nara but she was already out of hearing range. Looking down at the Grimm she said, "You drop me in the middle of the ocean I will end you."
