So... official timeline? Unofficial timelines? Wanna do the time warp again?

    We all know with the release of X&Y and even moreso with ORAS, there is a timeline to all the games, and they all are connected, soehow, someway.

    However, I can't seem to find an official timeline.

    So, for those of you guys who have seen the timeline, do you agree with it? Or is there plotholes and other unexplainable things?

    Or do you have your own timeline?

  • As for official timelines, G/S/C was set 3 years after the events of R/B/Y, with Team Rocket trying to reunite with Giovanni. Additionally, B2/W2 is set 2 years after the events of B/W. Beyond that, though, is mere speculation and deduction.

    I believe it's pretty widely agreed that R/B/Y were at the same point in time as R/S/E, and that G/S/C were at the same time as D/P/Pt. If we consider re-makes to have the same chronological setting, and if I'm correct in hearing about the Royal Unova model saying "still under construction" in the OR/AS oceanological museum, then B/W is set somewhat after the events of R/S/E.

    There are a lot of puzzle pieces to the timelines of Pokemon, as with every game. The problem lies with assembling them.

  • I have my own timeline and that's other than BW being before B2W2 and RBY being before HGSS, there's nothing else. I don't really like fitting everything into a specific place, and I highly doubt Gamefreak obeys the laws of time travel and they'll put any references they want in any games.

    If we add in X&Y happening after ORAS...

    I think Looker determines where X&Y are placed.

    However, we have to remember ORAS is considered an alternate dimension or the original r/s/e, so it, and X&Y cannot be placed in the timeline with those games.

    So another question is if all the reamkes take place in dimensions different from the originals...

    Gamefreak just screwed us over with the base breaker of oras.

  • Concerning alternate dimensions: There is nothing to say that, chronologically, the alternate dimensions are not the same temporally. In other words, while an event may not have taken place, causing some effects to the spacial realm, that event may not have affected the time that any future events are occurring, if that makes any sense.

    Remakes don't have to happen at the same time as the originals. Something that I could believe is that remakes happen after their original version, so GSC happened before HGSS.

    Ok so I'm giving years to games with year 1 being first.
    RBY and RSE both happened in year 1
    FRLG happened a year after that (year 2) having more pokemon in the kanto region (sorta), moltres changed his location potentially having scared away by red.
    GSC and DPPt both happened in year 3.
    In year 4 HGSS happened, following the new pokemon that were found in Kanto, the Johto professors did more research and found even more pokemon then they orignally found.
    For B/W I'm going to put it in year 4 aswell, I have no clue where else to put it. And Looker can't be in both Sinnoh and Unova at the same time :p
    B2/W2 happened 2 years after that I believe, so year 6.
    X/Y Also has Looker, you could say that this happened after B/W after Looker's succes in Sinnoh and Unova he moved to Kalos. So year 5 or 6.
    ORAS can be said to happen before XY due to mr bonding. Basing it on that it seems that ORAS can occur up until year 5. ORAS could happen during year 2 aswell it also has Looker so it seems unlikely to happen during Year 3 or 4 unless it's after Unova so during Year 5 and X/Y would be year 6.

    Of course Team Rocket, Team Magma and Team Aqua would be bothersome since they're supposed to be disbanded I believe. But oh well Team Plasma also returned in B2/W2.

    EDIT: Apparently I made a mistake, GSC apparently were 3 years after RBY. Just move everything a year later because of that, so year 3 would become 4, 4 becomes 5 and so on

  • I never really made my own timeline, it's all to confusing for me xD

    But I do acknowledge that R/B/Y is 3 years before G/S/C and B2/W2 is 2 years after Black and White. Apart from that I don't really look too much into it, Game Freak always finds a way to bend the rules anyway :P

  • The way I see it, so far we have three timelines (not to mention smaller, less distinctive timelines, each corresponding to one version of any given game) .
    • The first timeline, where Pokémon research went very slowly, Pokémon eggs are about to be discovered and so are Steel and Dark types, and Mega Evolution is completely unknown.
      • Year 1 : Red, Blue, Yellow
      • Year 4: Gold, Silver, Crystal
    • The second timeline. The Pokémon are much better studied than in the first generation. Mega Evolution and Fairy-type Pokémon are discovered in modern times, in Kalos.
      • Year 1 : Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald
      • Year 4: Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver
      • Year ? (later down the line) : Black, White
      • Year ?+2 : Black 2, White 2, X, Y (B2, W2, X and Y have been officially confirmed as taking place at the same time)
    • The third timeline. The Mega Evolution and all 18 types have been known for ages.
      • Year 1 : Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire

    I think S&M will take place in the second timeline, since we had that foreshadowing in X&Y, with the Strange Souvenir.

    There was once a tweet by someone affiliated with Game Freak or TPC or something that said that "RBY=RSE>GSC=DPPt>BW>B2W2=XY" or something to that effect. Whether or not this is "official" is debatable I guess. And then it's canonically stated in the games that the Johto games take place 3 years after the Kanto ones, and Black2/White2 2 years after Black/White. The only unknown in the length of times between games is between HGSS/DPPt and Black/White

    The way I see it, the timeline is basically that, but with ORAS in its own separate timeline/parallel universe (due to poor lore writing in X/Y about Mega Evolution+Delta Episode stuff). Remakes can be used interchangeably with the originals and doesn't really cause and effect on the timeline to me.

    Curious to see where Sun/Moon will fall. Are they gonna be in the ORAS timeline or the non-ORAS timeline? When do they occur in relation to the other games (after XY? if so, how long since then? maybe somewhere in the middle of the timeline?)?

    Remakes don't have to happen at the same time as the originals. Something that I could believe is that remakes happen after their original version, so GSC happened before HGSS.
    How do they happen at different times though? Remakes are the same as the originals storywise.

    I didn't think of that, coincidence I guess, though they might be slightly different, iirc FRLG forced you to go to the Sevii islands after the cinnabar islands while the originals didn't.

    As I see it, there are three main timelines:

    8 Bit: RBY => GSC

    16 Bit: RSE/FRLG => DPP/HGSS => BW => B2W2

    3D: ORAS => XY

    If RSE and ORAS are on separate timelines, then it stands to reason that the same is also true for RBY/GSC and FRLG/HGSS. My theory is that the 16 Bit timeline was created as a result of Bill's Time Capsule in GSC. Dark and Steel Pokémon were accidentally brought back into the past with it, which created a new timeline where those types existed during Gen 1 and were no longer considered newly discovered. (Compare Jasmine's pre-battle dialog from GSC to her dialog from HGSS.)

    The 3D timeline, of course, was created as a result of AZ's war happening and Mega Evolution coming into existence.

    I do think a version of each region exists in every timeline, although it may not necessarily exist in an actual game. For example, there's likely an 8 Bit version of Hoenn where Steven is a Rock specialist, or a 16 Bit version of Kalos where Mega Evolution doesn't exist.
