  • Hey, this should be relatively short, but anyway wrote this relatively recently and figured I might as well put it up here. This here is the first part.

    Meanwhile

    I.

Meanwhile, Darren, a Scyther, had become familiar with the surroundings in the Everglades, though an outsider to nearly all of the Pokemon around the area and its ash-ridden outskirts, whether Scyther, Beedrill, or Caterpie. They could only remember a few notable run-ins, other than a few isolated battles with trainers, including one with a Scyther that would later be better-known for being known as the protector of a quaint, small village nearby, whom he met while looking around the forest area as he sometimes felt compelled to do on discovering somewhere blatantly unfamiliar, although he didn't much like them. Even in a curious mood, that Scyther came off as overly talkative and he felt like he was talking to a brick wall and just being passively pushed in directions he didn't want to go, as if posturing were more important to Scyther than battle. Voices rose up in the distance. 'Hey, you out for catching Pokemon today?' 'Nah, it's a bit too dark and misty today.' 'There's a battle tourney right around the corner today.' 'Slightly abrupt, I'm not sure if I'll make it. Good idea, though, that.' 'Alright, so then are your Pokemon having an off-day today?' None of this seemed directly like something that Darren could do, either. Nonetheless, it struck them that there was a similar fighting circle event happening among the Scyther of the forest and a few others, and they thought that they might well want to check this out, despite a previous sense of disinterest in it.

With some measure of interest, Darren flitted over towards the direction of the small hut near a clearing which served as the location for these Pokemon battles in the wild, approaching the sound of clashing claws and an ill-tempered buzzing of wings. Sometimes they had watched such fights take place in the wild, sometimes involving a trainer's Pokemon, but here there could be a certain edge of something sorrowfully missing or an attempt to find a lost style of Scyther battles, obscured over since the advent of Scizor somewhat overshadowed the Scyther of the forest and their own customs concerning battling, although some of the Scyther were strangely quiet and may not have been expecting much other than to be involved in the fights; meanwhile, however, a vague shout could be heard from nearby and, temporarily buzzing slightly higher, they could see some trainers nearby shouting out commands. He reflected that he should probably come down, lest he trivialise the bug side of Scyther completely. While the central arena was by now a blur of Scyther, with a few practicing nearby, they could just about make out the sound of blue and a Scyther using something which looked like Water Gun to take out an unsuspecting Scyther temporarily, who seemed to be expecting a trained Pokemon rather than the rough and elaborate style of Scyther in the forest.

The battle soon slipped past. It was uneventful except for the Scyther with the advantage pressing the other Scyther into a corner with several Slash attacks, only suffering a temporary reprieve when it attempted a Swords Dance and was disturbed by a Slash to its forearm which it only barely blocked, although it would have time to heal and attempt to recover before the next match-up. A buzzing like a Beedrill followed the next contestant, but it was their opponent who most troubled Darren, looking unabashedly like the Pidgeotto of Violet City's Gym Leader, Falkner, whom he remembered disliking significantly after a run-in of sorts while with other Scyther. It moved like it, too; with a seemingly dazzling pace and highlighted against the surroundings, with a certain sense of expecting the others to give it attacks and show it where to go, while it otherwise behaved just like an ordinary Pidgeotto. Darren wondered if there was a certain mist in the air or otherwise that might make Pokemon look slightly different here, as he hardly recognised some of the Scyther as well. A covey of Scyther circled around like an audience, goading the fighters while occasionally flinching away from the battle when it got too close to the edges and seemed to threaten them. He could vaguely make out Shard, another Scyther he knew from the forest, amongst the fighters preparing themselves, whom he paged to check whether they could still enter the event, which Shard confirmed for the moment. At the same time, Darren wished to follow up a certain hypothesis of his, and flew around in the nearby glades looking for a noise or a flash or movement from nearby. After a brief look, he found what seemed to be a Machop waiting in the grass, training its knuckles against a tree. Scanning the nearby areas they found a few other battles going on, including a Wigglytuff and an Electrode, who seemed to be named Electra; what were these doing in the forest, in the wet grass which used to be territory to Scyther? Obviously, they couldn't catch the Scyther as they swarmed together in a protected area during the tournament, so it was seeming more likely that the Scyther had somehow found themselves in the middle of a trainers' tournament, which might be being broadcast from here.

A Rattata was slowly being drawn in the rough direction of the Machop, probably one belonging to a trainer; it looked tired and a bit roughed up, but would probably be healed up slightly before the battle. It looked about ready to give up. This wasn't going to be an even battle, so Darren figured that they might not have been counting on the interference of wild Pokemon of the forest, whose own culture seemed slowly displaced. As this was a trainer's Pokemon, they could be replaced with another, without it always being clear. As such, Darren quickly swooped down on the already-exhausted Rattata and used Slash, scratching its upper back. The half-familiar appearance of a wild Pokemon battle came down, with Scyther feeling a brief glow form around their forearms as they backed away quickly, although not before the Rattata responded with a quick Bite, causing them to sag for a moment. Darren responded with Double Team in order to take advantage of the Rattata's fatigue, causing them to almost give up the interest in the battle, while it hesitated between the multiple Scyther. Seeing this, they seemed to be moving towards the Rattata, hemming it in before finally landing a Slash. It seemed to be preparing for a move which looked vaguely like Super Fang would, although they didn't know Super Fang and were probably just attempting a Tackle. Darren figured that there must have been some miscommunication somewhere in their case, as he looked back to see that the Rattata had quietly fainted, to the point where he had hardly noticed.
