  • If I'm basing it on their evolution line as well, it'd probably look something like this:

    1. Treecko
    2. Charmander
    3. Froakie
    4. Totodile
    5. Turtwig
    6. Snivy
    7. Squirtle
    8. Oshawott
    9. Chespin
    10. Tepig
    11. Cyndaquil
    12. Torchic
    13. Fennekin
    14. Chimchar
    15. Mudkip
    16. Piplup
    17. Pikachu
    18. Bulbasaur
    19. Chikorita

  • I'll be basing this off the starters, not their evolutions. Maybe I'll come back and do another based on their evolved forms, because I know some of these would be different (except for the first two and the last four).

    1. Fennekin (foxes are my favorite animal, fire is my favorite type, I love the color orange, there was no contest here)
    2. Cyndaquil
    3. Torchic
    4. Chikorita (my very first starter ever, so I'm a little attached, even if I started over and chose Cyndaquil after losing at the first gym)
    5. Snivy
    6. Piplup
    7. Bulbasaur
    8. Treecko
    9. Charmander
    10. Squirtle
    11. Froakie
    12. Chimchar
    13. Oshawott
    14. Pikachu
    15. Turtwig
    16. Totodile
    17. Mudkip
    18. Chespin
    19. Tepig

  • I'm just scrapping Pikachu. I barely think of it as a starter and don't like it outside of the anime.

    1. Chimchar
    2. Mudkip
    3. Treecko
    4. Froakie
    5. Chespin
    6. Charmander
    7. Cyndaquil
    8. Treecko
    9. Fennekin
    10. Snivy
    11. Tepig
    12. Piplup
    13. Turtwig
    14. Bulbasaur
    15. Squirtle
    16. Totodile
    17. Chikorita

    15. Chespin
    16. Chikorita
    17. Bulbasaur
    18. Turtwig
    19. Tepig

Charizard is my all-time favourite Pokemon, I always picked Charmander as my starter. Treecko is the only grass starter I've actively used, the other five always felt like the weakest option in terms of design and moveset. Don't even get me started on the laziness that was Tepig.

  • Treecko is the only grass starter I've actively used, the other five always felt like the weakest option in terms of design and moveset.

I'll have to disagree a bit on that, coz I think that Bulbasaur is the best amongst Grass Type starters & I've almost always chosen it as my starter back when I played Red/Blue & FR/LG. Just my opinion :P

I tend to always favor water-type starters, however, I did not like Froakie at all. I hate frogs and his voice in the anime is like nails on a chalk board.

  • 1. Squirtle - Though RBY wasn't my first game, Squirtle is just a really cool Pokemon IMO. Especially when you can give it some "black sunglasses" in FRLG.
    2. Mudkip - Shiny Mudkip is hilarious and appealing to me, the very popular Mudkip meme encouraged this spot too.
    3. Treecko - There's something about Treecko that makes it different to all other grass type starters. Usually I'm not a fan of them, but Treecko's design just fits with my taste.
    4. Tepig - *cough* Nostalgia *cough* nuff said
    5. Snivy - Similar to Treecko, just unique in a way that I can't describe.
    6. Totodile - I don't know how many times I have trained up a Totodile and called it "Jaws", regardless if the game is official or fan-made.
    7. Froakie - Ninja frogs just seem right.
    8. Oshawott - Probably just because I like water type pokemon, or maybe that Samurott is a Samurai.
    9. Torchic - The Torchic event at the release of X/Y encouraged me to focus on Torchic's training in my playthrough more than anything else on my team. When I progressed to the champion, Blaziken was at least 10 levels ahead of everybody in my entire party.
    10. Bulbasaur - Though Bulbasaur admittedly gets uglier as it evolves, Bulbasaur was kinda meh to me. Not good, but no bad either. Being yet another Grass / Poison type discouraged me a little too.
    11. Charmander - This may have been one of my favourite starters if it wasn't so overrated. I'm sorry, Charmander.
    12. Chimchar - It's not that I dislike Chimchar, it's just that I have rarely ever used a Chimchar in any of my playthroughs.
    13. Turtwig - Turtwig's design is kinda average IMO, but what I'm not a fan of is the fact it grows a tree as it evolves, it just doesn't fit with me.
    14. Chespin - Though I can tell Game Freak tried to make a different feel for grass type starters once again, my Chesnaught named "sanik" never got past level 40 in my Y playthrough, and was boxed ;(
    15. Piplup - A steel type penguin Pokemon? I'll pass ._.
    16. Fennekin - IDK, honestly.
    17. Pikachu - Just because it's so popular. Yeah, I feel discouraged favoring a popular character.
    18. Cyndaquil - I've got nothing against Cyndaquil, but the evolution line doesn't show change at all, just growth on the most part.
    19. Chikorita - IDK, just like Fennekin, I just don't know why, but I just don't.

  • I'm not going for just the first stage, but for all members in each evolutionary line.

    19. Chikorita, Bayleef, and Meganium
Not that I hate them; it's just that I don't really find them interesting in many ways. It's just bland and deserves a mega.
    18. Chimchar, Monferno, and Infernape
I just don't like how they imitated the Torchic line. They don't even have an ability as great as them.
    17. Tepig, Pignite, and Emboar
I just find their designs a little too...out. Also I'm kinda sick of the Fire/Fighting trend.
    16. Cyndaquil, Quilava, and Typhlosion
I just can't seem to like these starters as much as I love others. Must be their competitivity.
    15. Totodile, Croconaw, and Feraligatr
They gave these kickass-looking things the same treatment to be given to all starters, and I find them a little boring.
    14. Treecko, Grovyle, and Sceptile
Though Mega Sceptile had a cool typing and Grovyle had a huge role in PMD, I didn't find them so great.
    13. Fennekin, Braixen, and Delphox
Somehow disappointing starters. While the Fire/Fighting trend ended here, they're just not as usable as the other two members of the group. Must be because of Magician.
    12. Charmander, Charmeleon, and Charizard
I don't like how popular this line is. I like how usable Charizard is, but mostly the only thing I love about the line is Charmeleon.
    11. Squirtle, Wartortle, and Blastoise
Same as above, though not as popular.
    10. Oshawott, Dewott, and Samurott
They're meh. Cute but not usable.
    9. Turtwig, Grotle, and Torterra
Grotle and Torterra's designs kick ass. Also I like the signature typing.
    8. Piplup, Prinplup, Empoleon
Prinplup is probably the best part in the line. I like Empoleon almost as much as Prinplup, and it's like Torterra, only there's a historical reference. Also Piplup is cute.
    7. Mudkip, Marshtomp, and Swampert
Mostly I like the line because of the Mudkip and Marshtomp memes.
    6. Torchic, Combusken, and Blaziken
Great ability, great designs (except Combusken because it looks like...a weird bird), great everything. I mean good.
    5. Pikachu (not Raichu or Pichu because they're not available in Yellow unless you trade and because it's a Gen II Pokémon, respectively)
I find it cute and cool.
    4. Froakie, Frogadier, and Greninja
    Protean FTW!
    3. Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, and Venusaur
I mostly love Mega Venusaur. I also love the fact that Bulbasaur starts off dual-typed.
2 and 1. Chespin, Quilladin and Chesnaught AND Snivy, Servine, and Serperior
    I LOVE using these starters.

The Chespin line is fun to use because of Bulletproof and Spiky Shield. I also like how Chesnaught looks...Mexican.

The Snivy line. Why? Contrary + Leaf Storm.

This was incredibly difficult for me, I don't really have any aversion to any of the starters except for Chespin. Also, I apologize for the absurd length. It's midnight right now and I decided this was probably the best use of my time instead of trying to be a constructive human being.

    19. Chespin - Chespin's evolutionary line just seems... exceptionally awkward for a starter Pokemon, even by modern Pokemon standards.

    18. Chikorita - Just a boring design. An effective one, and I'm actually a fan of Meganium, but other than that, there's nothing interesting about it to me.

    17. Tepig - Not much to say. I like the first form, but I feel like they could have pulled off the "bulky tank pig" look a little bit better. I think the wrestler look is just a bit silly.

    16. Pikachu - Eh, Pikachu being the mascot of the entire series just spoils him for me. I absolutely love Raichu though.

    15. Chimchar - He's adorable and all, but I feel like his later evolutions just have too much going on.

    14. Piplup - This doesn't have anything to do with design (except for second form), I just always find Piplup underperforming for me. Because of this, whenever I get a Piplup in any game, it's become tradition to name him "Pooplup." I don't dislike him, I just thought it was hilarious at the time.

    13. Snivy - They pulled off the "snobby aristocrat snake" too well, and the pompousness kinda just annoys me.

    12. Froakie - Silly looking IMO until final evolution. Also, I really enjoy Greninja in Smash 4.

    11. Torchic - Same as above, scratch the Smash 4.

    10. Fennekin - I like foxes. But I don't like foxes in clothes. Particularly dresses.

    9. Squirtle - I'm not entirely sure. Maybe it's because I usually grab a Charmander in Fire Red (despite what my later rankings will imply), so I just associate Squirtle with the overly arrogant rival, Blue. My neighbor also pulled this type-advantage shenanigan on me, which I'll explain in a bit.

    8. Totodile - Totodile has a special place in my heart for being my very first starter besides Pikachu. The difference between Totodile and Pikachu was that I actually finished the game with Feraligatr. The reason he's number 8 is because Croconaw is inexcusably ugly to me compared to the first and last evolutions.

    7. Cyndaquil - Aesthetically, Cyndaquil's evolutionary line is just awesome to me. Other than that, I for some reason feel weird about a Mono Fire type starter after using Charizard in Red.

    6. Oshawott - I really like otters. And water Pokemon. It's a convenient combination. I just like other starters more.

    5. Mudkip - Ground type is my favorite type. Plus Mudkip's line has pulled me through some pretty tight squeezes.

    4. Treecko - The first starter I chose when I first got Ruby several years ago, and the result I consistently get on the Red Mystery Dungeon personality quiz. Also, Mega Sceptile is just straight up awesome to me. Having a speedy grass type is quite entertaining to my little child-like brain.

    3. Charmander - I really like Flying types. Not as much as Ground, but still quite a bit. I also really like Dragons. When I was really young, and Silver/Gold had just come out, my older brother had been moving on up from his Red game to his Silver game. Because of this, he gave out his three Kanto Starters in their fully evolved, level 50 forms, to me, my neighbor, and... well, some other person I don't know, I suppose. I got the first pick, being his little brother, and because I loved Dragons and Dinosaurs and whatnot, I naturally picked Charizard and threw him into my little Pokemon Yellow game. My neighbor, being the slick little scumbag he is (jk) took the Blastoise. The only reason I don't have Charmander as number 2 instead of Bulbasaur is because I vastly prefer to have an Arcanine on my team, as he's been one of my favorites since I first ever picked up the games.

    2. Bulbasaur - Venusaur has pulled me through so many more situations than any other starter has, and I feel he has much more utility. He might not, but that's just how he comes across to me. This was very, very close to being a tie with Charmander. Despite the sentimental attachment to Charmander, I can't pass up a Venusaur on my team.

    1. Turtwig - Ground Type? Check. Nature? Check. Colossal turtle beast that would strike fear in the hearts of the average mortal man? Check. I can't put my finger on what exactly I love about Turtwig and his evolutions, but it has to be somewhere in between the fact that he learns Earthquake at level 32, and the fact that his final evolution is a gigantic tortoise with his own personal mountain for a shell. He's the CONTINENT Pokemon, for Arceus' sake. If that doesn't scream "Shadow of the PokeColossus," I don't know what will.
