Acclaimed Hollywood horror maestro Wes Craven, director of classics like the Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream movie series, died on Sunday in his Los Angeles home.

The 76-year-old director passed away after a lengthy battle with brain cancer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Craven is best known for creating the iconic character Freddy Kruger, one of the best-recognized horror villains ever, in his five Nightmare on Elm Street movies — which he said were inspired by a cemetery opposite his childhood home on Elm Street in suburban Cleveland.

Wes was a great story teller and a ground breaker. Like his movies or not, no denying he was a master of his craft. Very sad but no doubt his legacy will live on.

Like what Matt said earlier, I never watched his movies but he was a legend of the horror movie scene nonetheless. May he rest in peace.

Wow I feel incredibly stupid not hearing about this news sooner. That's upsetting he had a lengthy battle with brain cancer, but I loved all his movies series! May he rest in peace.

R.I.P Wes Craven. Another legend gone from my favorite movie genre. He made an iconic character and he made himself an icon in movie history as well. May he rest in peace as he marked himself as a great man in the movie industry.

I remember watching all of the Scream movies and loving them. This is such a shame to hear and Hollywood is losing a true legend, that is certain. Rest in peace.

Aaaw, maaaan. I mean, I knew it was coming sooner or later, because he wasn't exactly young when I was little and was trying to watch his movies without having nightmares (lol), but it's sad that he went through what he did. :c
