This challenge is based on Tolkien's fantasy series, The Lord Of The Rings. No knowledge of the books or films are required to play the challenge so don't put off by that! The challenge is set in Middle-Earth, where you play as one of eight races or factions, each constrained by a different set of rules.

    General Rules:
    1) You play as one of eight factions and must follow the rules specific to each.
    2) Each faction has two modes to choose from: Normal mode and Expert mode. Expert mode has additional rules for each faction that increase the difficulty of the challenge.
    3) You may up to 2 HM slaves unless the specific rules of a faction dictate otherwise.
    4) For each faction, you may only use Pokémon of the specified types. Dual types are allowed. However, you may not use dual types when one of the types is prohibited by the faction's rules. If Mega Evolutions are not mentioned in the faction-specific rules, you can assume you may use them as you like.
    5) You may use any game or ROM you like, hacks included. You may hack Pokémon into games if you wish but if you would like to play a challenge on Expert mode, you may not do any hacking (though you may still use a hacked ROM such as Omega Fire Red).
    6) Unless specified otherwise, you may use your starter in each challenge until you obtain the first member of your final team.
    7) Your challenge ends when you defeat the reigning champion in the region as listed below:
    (i) R/B/G/Y/FR/LG - Rival (first Elite Four challenge)
    (ii) G/S/C/HG/SS - Red
(iii) R/S/E/OR/AS - Steven (first Elite Four challenge)
(iv) D/P/Pt - Cynthia (first Elite Four challenge)
    (v) B/W/B2/W2 - Alder (Elite Four rematch)
    (vi) X/Y - AZ
    8) OPTIONAL. If you're familiar with Tolkien's work, you should nickname your Pokémon after members of your chosen faction!
    9) OPTIONAL. Your challenge ends if you lose an important battle (a battle against your rival, a Gym Leader or an admin of that region's villainous team.

The factions you may choose from will be listed below along with their specific rules.

    The Elves

    Rules:
    (i) You may only use Pokémon of the Grass, Water, Ice, Psychic, Electric and Fairy types. However, you may not use any Dragon, Fire, Steel or Dark types.
(ii) The Elves are immortal and one of the oldest races in Middle-Earth - therefore, if you are playing a Generation 2, 3, 4 or 6 game, you must use at least one Pokémon from an earlier generation if your final team consists of four or more Pokémon.
(iii) You may only use natural items in the game - so berries, herbs, etc - and no man-made items like Potions, Antidotes, etc. (You may use as many Pokéballs as you like.)

    The Noldor (Expert mode):
(iv) You must use at least one Pokémon with a base speed of at least 100.
    (v) At least half your team (rounded down if an odd number) must have recovery moves (Giga Drain, Recover, WIsh, etc).

    The Dwarves

    Rules:
    (i) You must have one Pokémon of each of the following types: Ground, Rock, Steel and Fighting. The remaining members of your party (if you want a team of five or six) can be any type you want except Grass, Bug, Flying or Fairy.
(ii) You may spend as much money as you like due to the vast wealth of the Dwarves, and gambling is encouraged if a Game Corner exists in the region.
(iii) "...there are no dwarf women... dwarves just spring out of holes in the ground!" You may not breed.
(iv) You may only healing items in battle against Bug, Flying and/or Fairy types.

    Durin's Folk (Expert mode):
    (v) You must use at least Pokémon with a height of no more than 3'0'' if available.
(vi) If your Pokémon can learn Strength or Rock Smash then they must, in equal number - for example, if you have a team of six Pokémon that can learn both, then three Pokémon must have Rock Smash and three must have Strength. If you have an odd number of Pokémon in your team, you must favour Rock Smash over Strength (ie, with five Pokémon that can learn both, two must have Strength and two must have Rock Smash).

    The Wizards

    Rules:
    (i) You may only use three Pokémon - representing Gandalf, Saruman and Radagast - according to the following specifications.
(ii) Saruman must be a Pokémon that doesn't evolve (Pokémon such as Scyther, for example, is fine in R/B/G/Y), of the following primary types: Dark, Psychic, Steel, Poison. However if Gandalf is one of these types (see below), Saruman must be either Fairy, Flying or Normal.
(iii) Gandalf must be a Pokémon that evolves only once (in the Generation you play in - for example, Scyther and Onix do not count in R/B/G/Y/FR/LG), or he may be a Pokémon that doesn't evolve at all but has a Mega Evolution (if playing X/Y/OR/AS). No type restrictions other than his primary type may not be the same as Radagast or Saruman.
(iv) Radagast must be a Pokémon that doesn't evolve of primary type Grass, Bug, or Ground or a
secondary Flying type. However, he may not be a Ground/Rock or Ground/Steel type.
    (v) Gandalf and Saruman may not occupy both occupy the first and second slots in your party. You must avoid having double battles with them if possible (so if returning to the previous Pokémon Center to revive Radagast avoids having to use Gandalf and Saruman in a double battlem you must do that!). Triple or rotation battles are fine.
(vi) You may use as many HM Slaves as you like.
(vii) Wizards do things themselves - you may not use the EXP Share!

    The White Council (Expert mode):
(viii) You must avoid double / triple / rotation battles as often as possible. If you cannot avoid one, Rule (v) applies.
(ix) You may only use Pokémon that you catch in the wild - no gift (or Game Corner if applicable)Pokémon may be used. This includes your starter, which you must replace with whatever you find in the first encounter on the first route (once you have Pokéballs).

    The Dragons

    Rules:
    (i) Your team may only have a maximum of four Pokémon in according to the following specifications.
(ii) One Pokémon must be a Dragon type. Megas are allowed only if they are Dragon type before Mega Evolution.
(iii) One Pokémon must have a primary typing of Fire.
(iv) One Pokémon must be a Flying type, but cannot be a Fire/Flying or Dragon/Flying. This doesn't restrict the previous two Pokémon from having a secondary Flying typing!
    (v) OPTIONAL: You may have a fourth Pokémon that could or should be a Dragon type! You may choose from the following evolutionary lines: Gyarados / Aerodactyl / Sceptile / Milotic / Tropius / Drapion / Yanmega / Gliscor / Serperior. However, if your fourth Pokémon can learn Fire / Flying / Dragon moves, they must learn them!
(vi) You must hoard your money - you may not buy any items!
(vii) You must fully evolve your Pokémon as soon as possible (so, for example, you cannot prevent Dratini from evolving until he learns Outrage).
(viii) Dragons take centuries to mature - you may breed if you wish, but you must acquire another 2 Gym Badges before you can use your egg / newly hatched Pokémon!

"My teeth are swords... and my breath death!" (Expert mode):
(ix) You may only use three Pokémon - replace either your Dragon, Fire or Flying type with one of optional fourth Pokémon listed in rule (v).
    (x) You cannot use healing items - you must retreat to your "cave" (ie, a Pokémon Center) to heal.

    The Orcs

    Rules:
    (i) Randomly generate 5 numbers between 1 and 8. After the Gym corresponding to each number you get, you may add a Pokémon to your party from an evolutionary line that you saw / fought in that Gym. However, you may not use or catch any of those Pokémon before you see them in the Gym! For example, if you play FR/LG and one of your Gyms is the third, you may not catch a Pikachu before you obtain the third Gym Badge, even though Pikachu is available early on in Viridian Forest.
(ii) You sixth Pokémon comes from replacing your starter with the first Dark type Pokémon you encounter. If no Dark Pokémon are available before the getting 2 Gym Badges, use the first Fighting Pokémon instead.
(iii) Your Pokémon may ONLY use attacking moves - no status moves, recovery moves or moves that increase / decrease stats. Attacking moves that have secondary effects can still be used.
(iv) You must always have at least one Pokémon with Cut in your party. You must also teach Cut to as many Pokémon on your team as can learn it. Additionally, you must Cut down every tree you find, as Lord Saruman commands!

    The Uruk-Hai (Expert mode):
    (v) Your superiority and stronger willpower definitely pays off! You may freely choose one Dark type and one Fighting type to use on your team. If no Dark Pokémon are available, choose a Normal type instead.
(vi) Generate 3 random numbers which again correspond to a Gym in the region as before. However, you may not choose which Pokémon from each Gym to use! Instead, you must use the first Pokémon of an allowed type (see next rule) that you next encounter in the wild after you obtain the Gym Badge (gift Pokémon do not count!). If you fail to catch the first allowed Pokémon you see, then you must go without!
(vii) When you catch a Pokémon after a Gym, you may catch a Pokémon of any PRIMARY type (except in the case of the Flying type) that is in the same grouping as the Gym's specialty type. The groupings are as follows:
    (a) Grass, Flying, Ice
    (b) Poison, Ghost, Bug
    (c) Water, Fire, Electric
    (d) Normal, Dark, Fighting
    (e) Rock, Steel, Ground
    (f) Dragon, Fairy, Psychic
So, for example, if one of your Gyms is one that specialises in Water, you may catch the next Water, Fire or Electric Pokémon you encounter in the wild. For a Flying type, you may not use dual types where the secondary typing is one of the following: Dragon, Fire, Electric or Ice.
(viii) You must box your starter when you receive your the first Pokémon you will use on your final team. Rules (iii) and (iv) still apply.

NOTE: Playing as the Uruk-Hai you will only be able to have five Pokémon on your final team - but your smaller number is no problem for your superior strength!

    The Ents

    Rules:
    (i) You may only use five MALE Pokémon.
(ii) You must use at least three Grass types and one Rock type.
(iii) You may also have one Water type but it may not be a Water / Ice or Ice / Water type.
(iv) You may not use Steel, Dark, Fire, Bug or Dragon types.
    (v) There are compulsory Pokémon you must use if they or anyone from their evolutionary lines are available. These are as follows:
    (a) Kanto: Exeggutor / Tangela
    (b) Johto: Victreebel / Sudowoodo
    (c) Hoenn: Roselia
    (d) Sinnoh: Abomasnow / Trangrowth / Carnivine
    (e) Unova: Simisage
    (d) Kalos: Trevenant / Chesnaught
(vi) You are the shepards of the trees! You may only use Cut when the story requires it to progress. Otherwise, you must not carry a Pokémon in your party that knows Cut!
(vii) "Do not be hasty!" You cannot use any moves that carry priority (Detect, Protect and Spiky Shield included!).

    The Last March:
(viii) You must use a Pokémon that is at least 6'11'' if available.
(ix) You must use one Pokémon with Base Speed no more than 60 if available.
    (x) You must carry stalling moves on as many Pokémon as possible. This includes status moves, recovery moves and moves like Subtitute, Leech Seed, Ingrain, etc - basically any move that doesn't straight up deal damage!

    The Forces of Good

    Rules:
    (i) You must choose up to six Pokémon from the list of nine that follow to use in your final team. You must nickname your Pokémon after the character they represent!
(ii) Aragorn: No type restriction. Must be your only Mega Evolution if you're playing X/Y/OR/AS. Aragorn must act as though he is carrying the Choice Scarf / Specs / Band from the moment that he has four moves in his moveset. So, he may only use one move per battle. Aragorn cannot hold any items.
(iii) Boromir: Must be a Steel or Normal type. He must carry at least one move with recoil and if he can learn Self Destruct or Explosion, he must!
(iii) Gandalf: Must be Electric, Ice, Fire or Fairy. You may use him for the first Gym you have him ready for, but not in any important battle (Rival, Team X Admin or Gym Leader) until you have obtained two more badges thereafter. Additionally, you cannot use him in the battle against the first and second Elite Four members!
(iv) Legolas: Must be Grass, Psychic or Fairy type. Must have at least one recovery move and one status move.
    (v) Gimli: Must be Ground, Rock or Fighting type.
(vi) The Hobbits! Frodo, Sam, Merry or Pippin - must be Ghost, Fighting, Bug or Normal type respectively.
(vii) Boromir cannot be in any double battle with a hobbit (triple or rotation is fine).
(viii) You may not use healing items in single battles. You may only use healing items in a double, triple or rotation battle if the following Pokémon combinations are on the field: Legolas / Gimli, Aragorn / Boromir and/or any two hobbits.

The Fellowship of the Ring (Expert mode):
(ix) Aragorn must lead in all important battls (rival, Gym Leader, Team X Admin, each Elite Four member).
    (x) You may not heal Boromir outside of a Pokémon Center.
(xi) Gandalf may not be used against the second and third Elite Four members instead of the first and second.
(xii) Legolas must also have a move that raise or lowers stats.
(xiii) Gimli must know Rock Smash and/or Strength (if he can learn both, he must know both)!.
(xiv) Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin may not know or use any moves over Base Power 65.

    The Forces of Evil

    Rules:
    (i) You must choose up to six Pokémon from the list of nine that follow to use in your final team. You must nickname your Pokémon after the character they represent!
(ii) Sauron: May only be your game version's iconic legendary (if you're playing R/B/Y/G/FR/LG, you must use Moltres) or a (semi-)pesudo legendary Pokémon. You must use a Fire, Steel or Dark type if once is available. The list of (semi)pseudo legendary Pokémon is as follows: Dragonite, Tyranitar, Salamence, Metagross, Garchomp, Hydreigon, Goodra, Slaking, Aggron, Flygon, Lucario, Zoroark, Haxorus, Volcarona. Sauron must preferably be obtainable in-game before you receive your 8th Gym Badge!
(iii) Saruman: No type restriction. Can only be used in an important battle only if half your team members have already fainted (if you have an odd number, round up!).
(iv) The Witch-King: Must be either Dark, Poison, Ghost, Steel or Ice type. He must act as though he is carrying the Choice Scarf / Specs / Band from the moment that he has four moves in his moveset. So, he may only use one move per battle. The Witch-King cannot hold any items.
    (v) Gollum: Must be either Ghost, Poison or Bug type.
(vi) Shelob: Must be a Bug type. If a Pokémon from the evolutionary line of Galvantula, Ariados or Ninjask/Shedinja is available, you must use one of them.
(vii) The Balrog: Must be a Pokémon that doesn't evolve; a Fire, Flying or Dark type must be used if one is available. The Balrog cannot be of the Water, Ice, Grass or Bug types.

  • I would recommend making the lose condition (losing to a major battle) optional, as it's not uncommon to lose one of those battles by accident.

Yeah, good point, I guess it's a bit harsh. I'll change that now, thanks for the suggestion!

Yes but Charizard occupies the second space in your team, the primary Fire with optional secondary Flying typing, which is allowed - you cannot have another Fire/Flying type in the third space though!

  • August 28th 2015- The Beginning

Started my adventure from Littleroot town with my Mudkip Daeron and beat Brendan on route 103. After receiving the pokedex I headed to route 102 and trained Daeron to level nine while also catching new members of the team. Collected two Oran berries and two Pecha berries. Upon arriving in Petalburg city I healed up my party of four and chatted with Norman before going with Wally to help him catch his own Ralts. Now about to head through Petalburg Woods to face the first gym in Rustboro City.

Please do, I'd love to watch you take the challenge!

I think I will take the challenge. I'll be sure to post in the description of every vid in the series along with the description in the video playlist of the series. Now to decide what game I should do... Actually you know what? You give me a game to play for the Nuzlocke I will do with this challenge. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now, but I don't care. It will be entertaining.
