Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma definitely left me with a great first impression as the first new anime I've watched this season. Although I don't normally get to watch many, I am a huge fan of both food based anime and manga, however the last one I watched was Yumeiro Patissiere - and that was quite a while back. However, in comparison to Yumeiro Patissiere slightly more delicate and slow animation to their baking, Food Wars' intense and fast paced cooking animation was brilliant (which fit well with the type of cooking style the anime presented).
From the first episode we are introduced to main character Yukihira Soma. An 15 year old cook who aspires to defeat his father, become a better chef and take over the family restaurant. I already do like anime where one aspires to be better than someone he looks up to, and the rivalry he's created with his father was pretty fun to watch.
I'm really enjoying Matsuoka Yoshitsugu's portrayal of Soma and mixed with his character design/ colour palette makes him a pretty likeable character. Even though he cause a lot of food orgasms to the people who eat is food, I do like how he isn't one of those nosebleeding boob obsessed main characters.
Although fanservicey stuff isn't high on my plate, I don't think it'll be not much of a problem from the way it's presented in food wars. The in your face foodgasm fanservice scenes are pretty hilarious.
The food animation and designs were also pretty brilliant. This anime is going to be the reason I crave to eat more food after every Saturday.
