I would say Pachirisu isn't the main character because they came up with it roughly 9 years after Pokémon began. :( "We're still working on a better ____" may work well as a slogan for PC, but I don't think a major franchise would have the same luck with a mascot.

Um, that said, I can see why they'd use Pikachu. It's an endearing character, and the name is just exotic enough so that people can easily remember it, but it's something new and fresh all at the same time. Design-wise, I find it more interesting that the Kanto starters. Yellow with those bright red cheeks again, is very memorable and when you're trying to pick something that will associate with your franchise for ages, you really want to stick with something easily recognisable. There may be unrelated reasons, but that probably had something to do with it. :|

I really don't know why they would chose him. He's not that great (unless you evolve him and Raichu lacks in some areas) and he's #25. Wow that's random. Well it's better than having Caterpie as the mascot. Actually, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad idea...

    Why Pikachu?

Because they focus tested Raichu and they didn't like him and they did the same for Pichu but he got annyoing. And noone likes Caterpie, so Pika was it.

Actually, Pikachu is the franchise mascot because of his involvement with the anime, and he was chosen as a main character in the anime for the following reasons:

    1. Pikachu is a character that is "cute" enough that girls will like it, yet shoots lightning bolts, which the guys like.

    2. Pikachu doesn't evolve without special assistance, so he's kind of continuous.

    3. Pikachu is, as has been mentioned, quite distinctive in design.

    4. While it might not be a reason why he was picked, Pikachu is the only Pokemon to have its name remain unchanged in every language the games have been translated into.

Because the writers decide to make Pikachu the mascot. ^^~

    -simple as that-

Well it wouldn't be as "simple as that" as they could of have sandshrew, nidoran, ekans, clefairy, jigglypuff, vulpix, etc. as the mascot instead, if Ash had a different starter besides pikachu things would probably be a lot different.

We'd be discussing the same thing if they'd chosen Poliwhirl. Pikachu works. Hes small and agile enough to climb on Ash, yet he can shoot lightning which makes him strong, and Pika as been corperated into so many different emotions. I don't know if Snorlax could have had the same effect. Plus its cute and lovable.
Plus the fans mroe or less decide a mascot, hence Charizard's popularity. If the fans don't like him and then no one remembers him.

Yeah as strange as it sounds, whenever I think of Pokemon I always think of Charmander instead, probably as he is one of my favourite. I could imagine it being Charmander as the mascot, but I do inderstand why Pikachu was picked. God imagine what the anime would be like if Pikachu DID choose to evolve into Raichu to beat the gym leader Surge?

Actually, Ash's Pokemon in the anime was suppossed to be Clefairy, but a litterally last-minute change made it Pikachu instead.

I can see it now: Clefairy, the uber-cute mascot of Pokemon. Instead of Yellow Version, we get White Version. (Oh my, that sounds a bit...racial ._.)
