Does anyone have a set writing time every day? Or do you wait for inspiration to strike before sitting?

    I write whenever a.) I'm compelled to write, and b.) there's nothing going on in my surroundings that makes it hard for me to think (such as a loud television in a nearby room—and when I say loud, I'm saying that nothing I have can drown it out @.@;). If I force myself to write at any other time, the results tend to suck pretty badly. o.o; So, no set writing time for me. XD;

When your characters are talking through though, do you write with speech marks or through italics?

When a character's just thinking to himself, herself, or itself, I just italicize it and don't use any sort of speech marks. When a character is actually speaking through telepathy, I put their speech in angle brackets and don't italicize it.

Part 2 of VS. Rhyperior is finally up in Poke Special Manga: DP.

    Took your time.

Now, a question regarding the start of a fanfiction:

Which would you post; an introduction, or the first chapter when beginning a story?

Obviously it depends on the story itself and whether or not it needs an introduction, but would you normally go with introductions?

    Yep :).

It depends on the story. For some reason, I think that my story needed an intro, but I think my first chapter was an intro, in its own way.

Depends. Usually I will post just the first chapter, but many times either a preview or prologue will be helpful for getting new readers.

Well...I did say I dislike reading mangas. If you make a regular non-manga one, I'll read it, I just dislike mangas.

Depends on what you mean by "introduction." If you mean a prologue, then I usually do. I really can't explain why except for the fact that I usually like to begin the actual story in medias res. Because I think that's cool.

If you mean a post saying "this is a story about blah blah blah," then definitely not. I feel it's just better to go right into a story, rather than messing around and making the reader wait. If you're going to tell a story, then just do it. No hype needed.

I would. MKD's already to the second page of the forum, last I checked. XD

What do you prioritize in plot writing? Do you start by figuring out the ending/big theme and work your way towards it with the chapters or do you just decide on the story as you go, leaving the ending open until it's time to write it?
Usually I figure out characters and the scene first, actually - "figure out" might not be the best way to put it though; more like "pop randomly into my head." What I mean to say is that before anything else, I just get the sudden idea that we are at x place, x sort of character is here and x and y will happen.

Then a bunch of other scenes with similar characters will come to me, some near the beginning, others in the middle, then I'll daydream and get ideas for the end. From there I attempt to form some kind of plot to tie an entire story together, which I suck at. I can not make a decent plot for my life, I won't deny it. XD

    I try to brainstorm the plot in advance, but a lot of times I just think "ah, whatever, I'll think of something when I get there." ><;;

Do you like reading/reviewing fanfics or one shots better?
Well, because of ym short attention span and lack of time, I prefer One-Shots (or short-chaptered fics still near the beginning). I don't necessarily LIKE them more, but I prefer them because otherwise I just lose my motivation.

    Also with fics, I tend to review too slowly and get left behind. ^^;

Does anyone have a set writing time every day? Or do you wait for inspiration to strike before sitting?
I usually just write whenever I get hit by inspiration or feel in the mood to write - otherwise my writing tends to suck. And, like with Jax, that tends to be late at night. >>

When your characters are talking through though, do you write with speech marks or through italics?
I think you mean "talk through thought." XD

Anyhow, I use just plain italics. I'll use italics with quotation marks for something like telepathy or when a psychic (person/Pokémon) is speaking.

Which would you post; an introduction, or the first chapter when beginning a story?
You mean a prologue or author's notes?

Author's Notes: I ALWAYS have these, just because I feel like I owe my readers and explanation of the fic before they start reading it. I tend to be a bit long-winded at times, but I think people should know what they're reading so they can back out before it's too late.

Prologues: it depends on the fic, really, but in general I think prologues are a bit overused. My first fic had a prologue which was somewhat random about a character who appears in a later chapter, but it wasn't really necessary. My upcoming Mystery Dungeon fic, however, will just start off with Chapter One, which I think will work out fine. ^^

It's better to show than tell you ;)
    Two days... two days.

    One day was nearly done.

Why me? Why me... why would he want a no fanged, didn't even know how to feed herself good-or-nothing?

Don't you want to know? Something inside me asked

No, I don't, I'm staying right here and breaking down into a schizophrenic sobbing mess that gets locked away in a mental institution, thank you.

But what if he had a good reason for picking you... what if there is more to this vampire thing?

What, a cape and a seaside castle in the Whirl Islands?

Maybe not... but I bet everyone thinks you can't do it, whatever 'it' is...

    Can't do it?

A fire of anger felt as if it had rekindled somewhere near my digesting liquid lunch.

Yes, Yvonne can't do it. She's a lost cause.

With a shouted obscenity that made Nickel jump, his tail transformed into the texture of a bottle brush, I hopped to my feet, nearly slipping over again.

    "I'll show them!"
italics for thoughts, bold for that 'talking to yourself little voice that is in everyones' head' ;)

Does anyone have a set writing time every day? Or do you wait for inspiration to strike before sitting?
I don't have a set time every day but I don't wait for the story to walk up to me ether...
Now that I think about it, between midnight and three am is when I write mostly :)

What do you prioritize in plot writing? Do you start by figuring out the ending/big theme and work your way towards it with the chapters or do you just decide on the story as you go, leaving the ending open until it's time to write it?
I write in order if that's what you mean, I start at the begaining and work to the end. I normally know the ending, and the the middle, but it is those bits that pull them altogether that give me trouble. Yet if I outline the story in too much detail it dies so I have to just get though the hard parts as best I can :)
Do you like reading/reviewing fanfics or one shots better?
I don't like one shots at all, they all are dark and depressing most of the time. At least with a full size fanfic there seems to be more balancing of themes :)
Which would you post; an introduction, or the first chapter when beginning a story?/B]

If the fanfic has any meaning to me at all I have to add an introduction :). Even if it is just to say what the title means.
'Fable' has lost some of it's older meanings to many people so I thought telling the meaning I was using it in would be a good thing to add, along with a little history of my idea :)

I'm not sure what one-shots you may be thinking of, but I've seen many one-shots that aren't. O_o In fact, quite a number of romantic one-shots are fluffy (i.e. meant to be happy), and then you've got the entire crackfic genre. One-shots centered around a battle (like some of Dragonfree's work) can go either way, although I don't particularly see them as being dark. Serious and full of action, maybe (unless it's also a crackfic), but certainly not angst-ridden.

This generalization is a lot like saying every short story in the English literary tradition is like the stuff done by Poe, which many of them actually aren't. o_o Please be careful about what you say about an entire genre of fiction, Orange Flaafy.

    2) Try and read and possibly review all of Jax's Fanfic
    3) Try and post Chapter 5 of Season Champs
    4) Try and have the attention span to read and possibly review my first manga (turtleking)

    Thanks for even considering. :)

I too will review some fics. Anyone need their fics reviewed? I don't review on grammar, FYI, I review on if the story is interesting or not, in my opinion.

I was'nt saying anything about Poe or real life short stories :). If one shots in the pokemon fanfic world were as varied as real life short stories then it might be like saying the same thing, but sadly I have'nt seen that :(.
I'm just saying that most of the time nearly every one short I've seen that has been written well for more than fluff has been depressing and dark IHMO.
although I don't particularly see them as being dark.
Everyone has their own idea of what 'dark' is. To me it is when the level of angst overshadows everything else in the story.
I guess more than anything I wish there was more of a balance between 'fluff' and 'angst' in one shots. I've read so many of the 'there is no hope I'll just die here/humans are evil/the world hates me' one shots that everyone else at Serebii seems to love that I just can't anymore :(.
Anyway, I am just saying why I myself don't like one shots, I don't think there is any need to be 'careful' about my feelings. I'm not stopping anyone else from loving them, and I am not the one one here with this POV.
Again my feelings about pokemon one shots are not the same as my feeling about normal short stories, I happen to be an english lit. major :)

    Edit:
I don't read pokemon fic (of any fanfic for that matter) for crackfic of any kind :) I like my characters in character :). I also don't read it for canon character romances :P. Unless maybe it is rocketshippy, but I have'nt read a good one of those in years.
