I'd say i depends on what you already have to use with it? If you have a printer older than a year check for drivers before deciding OS. in some cases there arent Vista drivers for soe printers. just make sure you check what you plan on using with it to make sure it works with Vista, chances are if it works with Vista you know it'll work with XP.
For My money I'm staying with XP until I get a Mac in Jan. or Feb.

At the moment Vista isn't very "friendly" I'd say wait til Vista SP2 comes out.
Are you using it for general stuff? work? graphics? etc
But if you're that type of "up to date" person, well all I can suggest is that you can always dual boot both XP and Vista.

If you can get XP, is a sure and safe bet. SP3 is coming out real soon for it to, and will further enhance it.

Vista SP1 on the other hand is also right around the corner, and I tested it. It was ugly, slow, and just didn't work.

Speaking of current Windows O/S. I've used both Vista Ultimate and XP SP2.

Now I'm using XP(on the old desktop, had Vista on the laptop)but in a few weeks time I'll be getting a new computer that I'll use Vista on. Possibly a dual boot. I would have used only XP with skins, etc. from Deviant Art but considering the fact that my graphics will be DX10 compatible which is only available on Vista, I'll go for a dual boot. :)

From what I can tell, Vista is just XP with no compatibility and a failure of a Mac-based skin thrown on it. My roommate has Vista on his desktop and our network suffers because Micro$oft can't even make two OS that can communicate between each other efficiently.

Stick with XP if you must use Windows. Uggh.

Personally, I think if you get Vista Ultimate, go for it. If you only have access to the Home Edition, then stay with XP. They have enough drivers for it now that you can run mostly anything you want. If you hack pokemon games, it doesn't support XP OSX Files, but I'm sure the tool makers will get them eventually. I think it has gotten to the point where people say Vista sucks due to what someone says, and not on personal experience.

Would you care to inform us what problems there are with the internet? I'm only asking because I use Vista and haven't had a single problem with the internet...

Vista has nothing to do with his internet connection. Unless he didn't run a Vista internet driver.

You may have to pay a bit more to get XP, but I would go with it. I know I am gonna wait until SP2 comes out for Vista and see how things are before I buy a new computer.

Well, you can easily get a router, which does the same thing as a USB wi-fi drive.
