Funny obvious choices there for the *supposed* Gen. III remakes we don't even know yet. :P Anyway, to answer your question, we'll know soon enough.

Maybe Petrel acted nice towards Lance, or something, then lured him to Arceus (whom Petrel had previously attacked), and Arceus defeated him?

I mean, nobody else can beat Lance. Well, except possibly Red and even less possibly, Green. Not Yellow, she needed their help, AND Blue's help, and she used Red's Pika.

And sorry to any Yellow fans, I just don't believe she was strong enough to defeat Lance. She's strong enough for Rockets (what she did in Fr/Lg arc was cool).

I still think maybe Lance was ganged up on, or perhaps being in the Whirl Islands doing nothing for several years has dulled his blade a bit. *shrug*

Also, you shouldn't really underestimate Yellow. I know she got help from everyone the first time in defeating Lance, but I'm not sure if Lance can increase the levels of his pokemon like Yellow can. That seems to be an ability only Yellow has, but I'm not sure.

Well, it is not really mentioned that Giovanni has the powers of the viridian forest... And it is never seen that he reads the mind of a pokemon...
So I am pretty sure the authors leave this open to fan suggestions. xD

Well, I think that even though Yellow needed Red Blue and Green's help in order to defeat Lance, the fact that she can use the Viridian Forest's powers well is enough for me to say that she is strong enough.

Think of it this way.
Red, Green and Blue's pokemon's energy went to her, she channeled it to Pika, and released a super powerful attack, to defeat Lance, AND fix the surrounding environment.

That's enough for me to say that Yellow is strong enough.

Yeah, now Green's trained her and she's obviously tried (unlike when she got upset that Rattata evolved), she's strong enough to hold her own, but I still think Lance is one of the strongest non-dex holders out there, up with Giovanni and Mewtwo, so probably would defeat her.

Do you reckon he'll get a Charizard now? He could be evil again and have a Charizard vs. Charizard battle with Green :D

maybe Petrel didn't really defeat Lance, and he's just lying to Silver or something? Personally I find it very hard to believe that Lance was defeated. I think Yellow defeating Lance was possible since she had help from the other dex holders, but one team rocket guy against a champion seems unlikely to me.
Or maybe it's just cause Lance is one of my favorite characters and I don't want him to be defeated xD

What did everyone give Kris for her birthday?
Red: A battle with Mr. Champion himself. Plus some golden tips :D
Green: Ehm. A book, most probably.
Blue: Accessories to go with her star-shaped earrings.
Yellow: A bouquet of flowers and a self-made apple cake :D
Gold: An unwanted kiss... at least, she says that it's unwanted. Difference between speech and feelings ;D
Silver: Pokeballs. I'd figure she runs out of them many a time.
Ruby: Well, duh. A new outfit.
Sapphire: A cake with all kind of berries... not as good succeeded as Yellow's, unfortunately. But hey, it's the gesture that counts, isn't it? :D
Wally: Hospital food. Asthma mask. Eh... yeah.
Pearl: Wouldn't miss a party so drops in regardless of not being invited. Gives a comedy act go compensate.
