    Dots's Sprite Showcase

Hiya there everyone! I've been inspired by what I've saw throughout this forum of fakemon sprites, so I decided to create my own, currently unnamed region, and I wanted to post my progress and the sprites I've been making here for criticizing. So all tips, comments, suggestions, etc . . . are appreciated! Just keep in mind guys that it'd really be helpful for me if you'd say why you like or why you hate something, since I've just recently took up spriting and would like to get better as soon as possible! xD

Also, just to make sure, I'll be saying this for any further inquires:
Anything posted here is not for public use unless otherwise stated to be so, for now, all of those sprites are exclusive to my upcoming game's region, so please respect my wishes.

Since I'm now officially finished with the introduction and warning, which you hopefully read, time to show you what I've got (until now). ;D

~ Cleri (male) --Level 15-> Cloble --Level 30-> Clorince ~
    ~
Very cheerful and upbeat, a frown on this POKÉMON's face is a rare case
as it can see the bright side of anything, and is usually a great source of
    motivation for it's trainer.

Respected for their dainty, polite nature, smaller POKÉMON often
regard it as a guardian because of its thoughtful personality and
sensitive spirit. A trainer is often proud of their accomplishments
when they find that their CLERI is evolving.

LARPAU are fond of the variety of berries that grow near its habitat.
Even though they cost a bit more than the average POKÉMON to look
after, this species is a fun-loving one that holds a delightful surprise to
whoever is raising it with care.

Also, I'll gladly make anyone who comes out with a name I pick a custom sprite, so get cracking! ^^

So, that's it for now, but expect a bunch of updates during the next few days! xD

Really good! Only problem for me is that they all are pretty much baby pokemon, and that Scrabbit is smaller than Smeargle, which doesn't really happen in evolution. See attachment for comparison cause I'm too lazy to upload it to photobucket :/. Keep spriting, they are definetly better than mine! Oh, and how about naming the Grass starter Clovera?

I start simple before going on to the complex, hence all the baby pokemon (although I'm not too fond of the Miltank/Tauros baby). Scrabbit happening to be smaller in size than Smeargle is more like a reference to the Oddish line, since Bellossom is smaller than Vileplume and Gloom.

Thanks for the suggestion! I like the name Clovera, but it just strikes me as a tad too obvious. If no other name is cuter, this is probably the one I'll be choosing.

Good stuff here. You have good form. I especially like Scrabbit. I could see that actually existing in a game.

Thanks you! I'm glad Scrabbit is liked, because personally, it was the first concept I've come up with and sprited, so it has a special place within me. ^^

Anyways, any feedback anyone's got is really appreciated. I'd like to see what others think of my work.

Ah, okay. It's fine with me no matter what you do; I was just pointing it out. I'm trying to come up with more names like Clovera for (Clovera). (Clovera) is what I'm using to refer to the grass starter because 'the grass starter' is wayyyyy too boring and long for me to type :P. Any ways, keep spriting!

Awe, so cute! Can;t wait to see more! :)

Thank you! Something new will probably be up during the weekend, so I'd appreciate any feedback or critique you've got right now about my present sprites. ^^

Thanks for trying Gol. It's amazing how hard it is to think up of the right name but how simple it usually ends up being. ^^ Referring to the grass starter as (Clovera) is fine with me, since it is based on a clover after all. xD
Anyways, like I've mentioned before, new material is more likely coming up during the weekend. Until then, I'd really really really appreciate any comments you've got, since I want to improve. ^^

Update: Three new entries were added to the Pokédex.

    #??? - Taupille
    Bug
    Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^

    Worm Pokémon
    - Taupille Level 10 > Chrysil Level 15 > Pierrollon -
    ~
TAUPILLE have a huge appetite that they quench by feeding on plants nearest
to them. Incredibly, they never get bloated and are usually a hassle for most
    beginning trainers.

    #??? - Chrysil
    Bug

    Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^

    Cocoon Pokémon
    - Taupille Level 10 > Chrysil Level 15 > Pierrollon -
    ~
    After evolution, those
POKÉMON lose the ability to move quickly and barely
eat aything. Only a most devoted trainer could bring out the best of them, and
the hard work pays off nicely at the end.

    ***

    #??? - Pierrollon
    Bug/Dark

    Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^

    Rhythmic Pokémon
    - Taupille Level 10 > Chrysil Level 15 > Pierrollon -
    ~
Unmatched by anyone, PIERROLLON dance gracefully to tunes provided by others.
Despite their weak flying capabilities and size, they can deceive their foes with illusions
that ensure their victory in a battle.

    ***

Finally finished with them! *wipes brow* Those guys were a pain to sprite, although the final result is most satisfactory (I'm not that fond with the second one, but it's okay for now). By the way, those guys are based off the Red Pierrot butterfly, which in my eyes, is the prettiest one I've ever seen.

Guys, I'd love it if you'd leave comments and feedback on them, so the harshest criticism you've got is most welcome right now! Also, the other fakemon are still waiting for names, so I'm still open to suggestions.

I like how your sprites are pretty clean and smooth, especially you line work.

A couple of things stand out to me though.
    Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^
    Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^

Aside from the wings on the second one these two are more or less facing forward and that's a no-no for emulating the official style. Plus I think it makes them less interesting to look at. I also think you could do more with the arms and legs. In the case of the first one they could have more than a standing pose and in the second's case they could be more than noodles attached to the body. You know, variety in shape or thickness, possibly different colors.

    Now these:

are great in terms of getting an interesting angle. I especially like the green-eyed bug. It's one of your simpler sprites, but I'd say it's one of, if not the best one you have. But maybe that's just me.

Your style is also nice. It doesn't exactly scream "pokemon" with the way you do faces, but it's good.

    Now, this one:
    Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^

I don't like it. It looks like your other one shrunk down. I think you're trying to make it too complicated within too limited a space. The feet especially seem too small to have the shading you gave it. It would probably be enough to give one foot shading and the other highlighting.

Now that I look at it, you only use two colors to shade your sprites: a light and a dark. Official sprites generally use three: a base, a shade and a highlight. It's good for suggesting different shapes without having to add unnecessary detail. But again, it's your style. (Your Scrabbit, for instance, has a bit of a flat face.)

I hope you feel more confident to try larger/more complex sprites soon.

That's the exact criticism I needed, and I thank you very much for it. ^^

Hm ... For the first two, I was trying hard to make them face the bottom left. I see what you're saying though, and I just find it weird that I've done that when I know it's a mistake but still overlooked the fact that they're facing the wrong way. I'll be working on fixing them, and I might even give them a revamp. On the other hand, while I get what you mean when you say "give their arms/legs more shape", I'm not sure of how to do that, since the working space is pretty limited. I'll try to figure out what to do about that though.

I'm glad that I actually got those right in terms of angle! ^^ As you can obviously tell, I'm pretty new to this sort of stuff, but I'm trying to get better.

I find it weird that while you like second one the most, I find it too lacking. You just made me feel better about some of my work, so thanks for the compliment! ^^
When you mentioned that they don't really look like pokemon, you meant the calf ones, right? Because those were the ones that I found not-so-good looking after I finished working on them.

Hm ... I'll probably be remaking those guys slowly after fixing the two you mentioned at the beginning. Right now I'm thinking of scrapping the calves.

    Now, this one:

I see what you mean, that little guy does resemble his new evolution. I'll most likely simplify this one and make Scrabbit resemble an evolution then.

About the shades, you're completely right, and it hurts a bit to know that I've missed the whole point of shape suggestion through shading. I should try to emulate the official style more, so adding a highlight to what I already have wouldn't hurt.

Thanks a bunch Scarf, I really needed that feedback you gave me and I'd like to hear more from you. Hopefully I will become a better spriter through following your tips. ^^

Nice Sprties they are good Chrysil doesnt that much look like worm it needs some woerd parts to make it cacoon XD!

    Thanks. ^^

Chrysil isn't supposed to look like a worm, if that's what you meant. It is based on a pupa, or chrysalis, which is the 'morphing' stage between the state of worm and butterfly.

So the next update is probably going to be a revamp/remake of a sprite I originally made, since I want to improve in terms of shading and spriting. That or a new name/evolution-method. Priority is still for the first choice though. ^^'

    A few updates guys. ^^

Starting off, I've re-sprited Taupille. The old sprite was bothering me a lot since it was larger than it's evolution, and in real life, it's supposed to be the opposite. The new sprite is now smaller and simpler (since I've removed the antenna-ish parts on its head), and in my opinion, it looks cuter. Also, the slightly edited pose makes it look less like it's going to topple over. I've also changed the species' name too, and Taupille are now to be classified as Larpau.

So without delay, here they are:
    Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^
    --->
    Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^

Larpau's (formerly Taupille) old and new sprites.

Forwards onto Update No. 2 then. A new breeding technique has been discovered! Breeding a Smeargle or Scrabbit holding a Rainbow Incense will result in ??? (the baby pokemon that evolves into them, currently unnamed) hatching from the resulting egg.

    And here's the incense:

    Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^

Before any of you comment on this, I know that the rainbow incense is not rainbow-hued and contains three colors not in their usual pattern. The other four colors are on the other side, since fitting them all on one side is near impossible.

    ***

I'd like to have some feedback guys, and remember that you still have the chance to pick a name for the unnamed pokemon on the first page. Also, some of the other pokemon are on their way for a revamp, and I'm still thinking whether to scrap or keep the Calf pokemon.

What about... Trunny for the unnamed Pokemon? It's a combination of Trace and Bunny... it didn't come out quite right, but I think it's better than Tranny or Tracey (my other two ideas)

Also, for the Rainbow insence, I think you should show any of the following three color combinations on it:

    Blue, Red, and Yellow
    Blue, Red, and Green
    Yellow, Magenta, and Cyan

Well, the baby pokemon was supposed to resemble a puppy having slight features of a bunny, and the names you chose are all based on 'bunny'. Maybe you can make other suggestions now that you know the true nature of the concept?

Also, for the Rainbow insence, I think you should show any of the following three color combinations on it:

    Blue, Red, and Yellow
    Blue, Red, and Green
    Yellow, Magenta, and Cyan

So, I've made three incenses that fit your suggestions, but I can't decide on which one to use. I'm particularly fond of the last one, even though the cyan sticks out a bit too much.

It's a nice sprite, but it's not much different from how it was originally. The head looks like it's facing forward a little more and it's probably about where it needs to be, but it's a little plain. Antennae would give it a little more pizazz though the ones you had before weren't doing much so I can see why you'd scrap them. It's also looking a bit flat at the bottom. Look at caterpie for comparison:

    Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^

It's got more of a rounded underside which helps give it that impression of a third dimension. In general, straight lines give a sprite a more 2D look which I think we'd all like to avoid. You're a bit inconsistent with how dark you made the outline. The end of the tail and the belly are dark, but there's a space between were it's lighter. That dark line at the bottom is also contributing to that less-than-3D look because it stands out so much.

    Dots's Sprite Showcase! ^^

I'd stick with this one. IMO the cool colors work better than red and yellow.

Hmm ... So I've got to move Larpau's head back a bit, fix the inconsistency in the outlining, make the bottom rounder to avoid the 2D look, and give it antennae?

I'll see to that once I get some time. Thanks a lot for the criticism Scarf, I really appreciate it! ^^

As for the incense combo, I have to agree with you. I liked the original the most because of how the colors sort of blend into the brown and give an oriental-ish look. I'll leave it open though and wait to see what the community decides, but if little to no one votes, I'll be sticking with this one.

    I vote the Blue-red-Green combo!

    Thanks for the vote. ^^
