I <3 this page so far. I felt like I was the only one defending our "anti-new types" argument.

    Hehehehe.

Well, I WOULD defend Light type, but I think we're already on the second or third cycle in this conversation of people saying the exact same thing.

    "Light types are unnecessary!"
<-- Yes... and? So was Steel, but we all love it.
"New types were only introduced in Gen II to nerf Psychic" <-- again, DARK did, but why Steel?
"A light type is already covered by Fire and Electric" <-- Most of us have a different concept of "light" than just that stuff. If you haven't figure that out by now, then we are wasting our breath.
"Psychic is already the opposite of Dark, look at Espeon/Umbreon and Cresselia/Darkrai" <-- except that Psychic has no effect on Dark and is really more arcane magical power than it is any sort of purity.
"A 'holy' Light type would bring up too many religious controversies which Game Freak won't do" <-- And yet they introduced an 'evil' type (dark), which is actually called evil in the Japanese version. They didn't get into any religious controversy with that one, so why worry about it now?
"A new type would unbalance the gameplay." <-- Those of us pushing for a New Type trust that Game Freak knows this game better than we do and can create a new type without overpowering it. Heck, the average Smogon user could do it.
"Well... well... I just don't like Light Type." <-- And now we get to the heart of the argument. This is really all that you're arguing.

But I don't just want to pick on the anti-new type people. There are a few things that the pro-new type people are just as guilty of.
"They should really re-type Ampharos and Lanturn as Light Type!" <-- It's far too late for re-typing pokemon that have existed since Gen II. MAYBE you could make a case for Ampharos, but re-typing Dual-type pokemon is a bad idea. Always.
"Light Type should be super-effective against Dragon" <-- Dragon is specifically made to be a type that is weak against little and strong against little. Making it weak to Light WOULD unbalance things.
"All you haters are just afraid that new types would screw up your competitive edge in the metagame. You'd have to learn new type combinations." <-- I have never actually heard anyone argue this. Most are just of the mentality that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Personally, I'm all in favor. Outside of the pokemon fanbase, this series is majorly derided for never changing from game to game. If they are to pull in large numbers of new fans, they need to show that they are progressively thinking, and a great place to start with this would be adding in new types. I have already (extensively) defended Light type as a reverse-triangle of the Dark/Psychic/Fighting triangle, with an immunity to Steel. I have also (non-extensively) thrown out an idea for a Sp.Defense version of Steel known as Glass or Crystal type, to enhance the gameplay changes caused by the physical/special split. I can understand people not liking those ideas, but please get some new arguments.

Personally I have no issue with Light type. I just don't see it as practical. Steel's addition brought in balance to a different section. I think it has the most resistances of all the types. Not sure on that, but I think so. It was also added in to give the metallic Pokemon that were added in the Second Gen a typing as well. If not we prolly would have had our first Pure Flying type with Skamory. It gave Fighting another type to be strong against to give Fighting more use. There hasn't been an addition to the games that didn't serve a purpose.

I do think that if they were adding new types, we would have heard about it by now. I mean its something that fans have wanted for so long. Why not leak it out when Zorua or Zoroak were released. Or even when they released the new Attacks and Ability that are known so far?

I think its unlikely that they would add more Types now, but no one can say 100%. I myself am about 70% sure that Light won't be added in THIS generation.

Evil is inherently different through culture. Dark types have nothing to do with major view of evil. They are mostly those that fight underhandedly or use stealthy attacks. First thing I think of when I think of Dark Types is Ninjas. Especially in fighting tactics. Bringing in a concept of Holy doesn't fit with this version of Dark at all. If Light were to mean "order" or "honor" that would be one thing, but the Fighting types travel between honorable attacks to dirty fighting as well.

With exception to Zorua and Zoroak, no Pokemon to date has been "Evil" by nature. Its just the version on Light that everyone seems to want just doesn't fit in.

Now Crystal, I'd have thought they'd have brought that in after the Orange Islands Episode with the Crystal Onix. This one I think has an even less chance of getting in. I'm about 85% sure that it won't be there.

Now my % can easily change if I find or I'm shown any info that would say or hint otherwise. But it just doesn't seem like something that is going to happen.

If anything you'd think they would have made Arceus a Light type. I mean he is the "God" of Pokemon. It hasn't happened so its just not likely to happen.

    Steel unnecessary?

It nerfed the uber psychic type even further in Gen II because if they weren't added, then only two types would be resistant to it.

As for the light type being unnecessary....hahaha yes it is =]

    @XanderO

Yes! NOW this conversation is going somewhere.

I agree that adding Light-type is a long shot, but I think it's still within the realm of possibilities. PR departments have a tricky job of knowing when and how to reveal things. I mean, why reveal Zekrom and Reshiram without revealing their type? Probably to build suspense. They COULD be sitting on a major piece of information that they are waiting to give out.

As much as i find the idea of a new light type fun and interesting, I also find it completely pointless and unneeded. Why would they bring in a new type so far into the series?

And, for the sake of saying they actually have, it would completely unbalance the type defences and weaknesses and they may have to bring in another totally different type just to stabilize the balances

    What would be next...Rubber? =]

A light type would be so unneeded, we already have more than enough pokemon types. How many more could they possibly need?

    >list of badly shoehorned arguments
So basically you countered a bunch of arguments you felt you could, rather than addressing issues people here have specifically brought up. Then, you take your own word as fact implying anybody who disagrees with what you say has been "extensively" proven wrong?

Somebody needs to tone the pretentious down a tad.

Other than that, you contradict yourself in saying "Game Freak knows better than us", followed by "the average Smogon user could do it."

There is just as much evidence for Light Type as there is against it, and no argument you ever attempt to make will suddenly change that. Yes you may have valid points but the the points you countered have not been made any less valid, not at all.

    A few simple rebuttals, take them as you will;
    • Regarding religious controversy, yes it's called Evil Type in Japan, not here. Have you perhaps ever wondered why it was changed to 'Dark' in English?
    • Steel was made for no reason? I guess that's why it isn't resistant to psychic among other things. Oh wait, it is.
    • You go on to say that people are only arguing against a Light Type because they don't want one. This is ridiculous and some sort of weird psychoanalysis that you've come up with to make yourself look right that doesn't actually make any sense.
I for one have argued against Light Type, but do you know I don't want it? No, not at all. You made stupid sweeping generalizations.
Your post is shallow and ill thought, and it is unfortunate you think you have the final say on the issue.

A terrible misunderstanding of my previous points.

Ravecat, cool down a bit. I was saying that the argument is going in circles, listing what people on one side say and the way the people on the other side react to it. It is not the definitive solution to the problem; it is a way of saying "let's stop saying the same things and move on." You'll notice I did this a bit for people on both sides, though I've made my stance pretty clear.

Other than that, you contradict yourself in saying "Game Freak knows better than us", followed by "the average Smogon user could do it."

....not really a contradiction. The average Smogon user could create a balanced new type, and Game Freak is even better than they are when it comes to their own product.

I bring up the Evil/Dark correlation to show that they could put in the concept as long as they didn't call it Holy. I think that is very relevant to the conversation.

Steel was not made for no reason, but it is definitely a departure from any other types. 11 resistances and 1 immunity?! I find it hard to believe it was given 11 resistances in order to counter Psychic. I think it is an example of Game Freak's willingness to be creative with their types. Dark can be argued as a let's-balance-psychic-type addition, but I don't think you can say the same for Steel simply because it was added at the same time.

As for me arguing that "people are only arguing against a Light Type because they don't want one," I would be the first to argue that people are only arguing for a Light Type because they want one. I want a Light Type, hence I argue about why it would be a good addition. When people bring up reasons why it shouldn't be included that go beyond a pathos-based argument into a logos-based argument, I counter with logos-based rebuttals, to show why unbalancing types and redundancy are not as big of issues as people make them out to be. But the core of what I hope I'm saying is that I want to see new types because it would add creativity and freshness to a franchise that is often criticized for releasing the exact same game over and over again.

Though I don't see my post as a misunderstanding as much as a backpedal on your part, I do very much agree with you on wanting new things added to Pokémon games for the sake of creativity, such as new types, type-combinations, etc.

I'd like to see a new type, if it could be done well, but that's the problem; could it be done well enough to warrant inclusion?
I do not see the fan want for Light Type as reason enough to disrupt the Fighting > Dark > Psychic chain.
It's nice as it is and though a Light Type could be interesting at best it's just not terribly useful.

I would be interested to see a Crystal/Glass Special tank type, solely because that sounds like it could be very intriguing.

Ok so steel has 11 resistances... And? They all make sense: rock, bug, psychic, dark, ghost, flying, normal, grass, ice, dragon, and steel itself.

Steel is strong, impenetrable, resistant, etc in real life. It makes sense that these characteristics are apparent in the games. Even the types it is weak to make sense.

Ground: Think of the foundation for skyscrapers being removed/stirred/damaged.
Fighting: Think of martial artists punching through amazingly tough material.
Fire: Think of items being forged by fire.

However the light type (any other new type), as ravecat said, wouldn't make sense. How can these be added and still maintain the integrity of the games? Farfetch'd outlooks on type effectivity is out of the question. This series is mostly aimed at little kids nowadays.

I trust gamefreak as well; but I trust that they won't add a new type.

If Anything I see Light being Super Effective against Ghost, Poison, and Dark (Mainly going by the religious version of light cause that's the only way I can see it thrown into the Pokemon world.) Holy Light banish's ghosts, cures poison, and dispells the dark.

Weaknesses...Dark...Well ya that's all that really makes sense in my book...

    Immunities...none.

Non Effective (Does 0 Damage to) Steel, Ice, Water, Fire, Electric.

Ok why? Steel...Metal...It reflects light. Ice and water refract light so it just passes through unharmed...Fire and Electric produce light so its like using a Flashlight during the day time. Fire and Eletric can prolly be moves to NVE against though.

Practical sense Light isn't something good to add. I mean Psychic doesn't fit in the match up. Neither does Fighting, Flying, Ground, Rock, Grass (unless it doesn't effect grass types), Bug, and Dragon. I mean there is no way to make those fit in any of the other categories.

You know what I would in fact love? A holy/light type centered around healing.

The "Clerics" of the Pokémon world.
Though healers aren't very useful considering the battles are one on one, you could still use them to heal your benched Pokémon.

Well, I'm not generally against a Light type. My only problem is that there would be just a few Pokémon with this type and I don't really want older Pokémon to change their type, like e.g. Magnemite did.
And seriously, there's no need for ANOTHER type if you ask me. I'm fine with the current number of types. To me "light" is also already represented in Electricity.
So, I'm for a Light type but I guess it's just too late to introduce another type to the series and its consequence would be too immense.
