Didn't see a thread too similar to this, so yeah.

Almost all of us have one; that one game that is almost universally panned by critics and fans alike, but for some reason, you love it with a passion. You can't get enough of it and you can't understand why everyone else hates it so.

What was a game that you liked that no one else seemed to like?

To answer my own question, Digimon World 2. It got terrible reviews but it will always hold a place in my heart because I spent so many countless hours in the game as a kid.

I wouldn't say underrated in terms of reviews/ opinions etc., but the Shin Megami Tensei series (notably Persona) is one that I don't hear many people talking about, unless it's on a dedicated forum.

P3P seems to have piqued peoples' interests, but still, there are many who haven't even heard of SMT. D:

    Oh, and Harvest Moon, too. >_>;

MegaMan Star Force. According to some, the series was wearing thin with the later installments of Battle Network, but I just can't get enough. One of my favorite combat systems, and it wasn't ruined for me after Star Force, either.

Etrian Odyssey, Custom Robo, and anything set in the Disgaea-verse count as far as my RL crowd goes.

    For me, those are:
-BIONICLE Heroes (because of the funny cutscenes and good graphics)
-The Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series (sure, it's repetitive, but the storyline and missions are what keep me going)

Digimon World in general is a good one.

Earthbound, everyone who plays it loves it, but it still doesn't get the limelight it deserves.

Chrono Cross is up there, because its totally shadowed by Chrono Trigger, and so is Final Fantasy 8, since everyone knocks it for its junction system.

    Shaq Fu.

Is it rubbish? Undoubtedly. But it's still far better than people give it credit. The fact that it ends up on so many worst game lists only shows that people are A) lemmings or B) don't play enough terrible games.

What was a game that you liked that no one else seemed to like?

Rugrats Scavenger Hunt - Being one of my first N64 games, of course I played it a lot. I only had two games to play at the time. And though most people consider this a dud, 7 year old Syd begs to differ. I still have fun playing it today. I'm determined to beat the Reptar level someday.

Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald - Considered the worst among the series, Sapphire was the game that pulled me back into the main Pokemon games after I lost my Yellow version. I have played these games so many times that I know the region, sidequests, and TM locations by heart. I saw nothing wrong with these games, despite whatever flaw others seemed to find in it. I don't like all the water though, I'll admit that. But that alone is not enough to ruin the game for me.

Earthbound - No, I haven't played it, but I'm more or less talking about the series as a whole. Think of the advertisement the game got. "This game stinks." Well, if even the ad is telling me it stinks, why would I buy it? That didn't give the game any justice. Those who have played it consider it a masterpiece among games, and let's not forget the fabulous Mother 3. In the course of a week, it blew through Ocarina of Time and took the throne at #1 on my favorite games list. I can't get enough.

Viva Pinata - It's like The Sims and Harvest Moon had a baby...but they did drugs during pregnancy. It's corny, and I feel weird for playing it sometimes, but I am too addicted to give a crap. If you haven't picked it up, you definitely should. It makes me feel normal...because I certainly wouldn't have though to raise pinatas of all things.

Kirby - Pink fluff ball. That's all people see. I've seen some of the weirdest crap in the Kirby series. 02 is honestly one of the weirdest bosses I've seen, and Dark Matter is just as creepy. So many cyclops enemies. Keeping a cute demeanor about itself and having bright, cheerful music really hides the dark things that lie beneath the series.

    Luminous Arc/Luminous Arc 2
    Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure.

All are niche-market JRPG's that feature rather generic gameplay and aren't talked about much, but I still thoroughly enjoyed playing them. Personally, I found the characters and storylines of each of them to keep me hooked and to play through them multiple times.

You've misunderstood the point of the advertisement. The player guide came with scratch and sniff stickers.
The ad played off of this in a manner similar to the humor found in the game itself.

EarthBound - I beat it without any complaints, it was such a fun game! It deserves a bigger fanbase, though unfortunately I don't think that would happen soon.

Ape Escape: Pumped and Primed: The first addicting PS2 game I've played in my life. Now while the series itself doesn't have much of a spotlight, this game itself has the smallest. What the heck, everything about the game is good!

So yeah, those are the biggest ones I must bring up, though there's a lot more.

I don't get the joke, is it because one of the characters names is Poo? ?0_o?

Maybe it was more popular than I think, but I would pick Chibi-Robo. It could have been better, especially if there was more to explore or do, but it's so fun to be a tiny thing in a regular sized world.

Pokemon R/S/E. In my opinion the best Pokemon games out there, but most other fans HATE them! D:

Ruby version was actually the one that got me back into the games, I never heard about anyone hating them though?

well, don't know if this counts as a video game, but lots of people underestimate the touhou games, people say it looks easy when its actually pretty hard.

    TEE ELL DEE ARR ALERT

I think I'd have to say...

    Underrated Games

Basically this game isn't really well received amongst the fans for reasons I'll get into and it did get lukewarm reception from critics, but for reasons that go far beyond me, this game receives a lot of hate from the fans. Why? Well, for one, to them, it had a tough act to follow. Sonic Adventure 2 had near-universal praise from critics and fans alike and, well, anything not as aesthetically interesting as a 67 year old Hedgehog with a foggy past is going to get poo flung at it. Even worse, is that it had a pretty campy moral about the value of teamwork and the oldschool fans who would be in their late teens by now would fling more poo as the game isn't treating them like an adult like SA2 did. Problem 1: Sonic Heroes didn't seem as interesting as SA2.

Another thing, Sonic Heroes dramatically changed the formula. Instead of three different play styles, there was one with four different teams of three characters. Personally, this is where I felt Sonic Heroes shined. And not just from it's incredibly bright and colourful graphics. Seriously, you will get seizures looking at this game. It felt more like how Sonic Adventure should have been, but it decided to take a different route. It worked, but it didn't really feel that Genesis-like. Sonic Heroes' level progression and basic story felt more like a classic Sonic game. You go through the Act of a Zone, then you go through the second Act, then you square off against Eggman. Even the Chaos Emeralds, which, in the Adventures, were story elements, were once again bonus items if you wanted the Good Ending. Personally, I still think this type of easy, streamlined level progression can still have a place in new age Sonic games as long as it's implemented like this. Sure, I have my own plan for a perfect Sonic game, but that's for another time. Of course, for reasons stated above, classic fans didn't care because they felt there was something interrupting it, even if that were minuscule and unimportant, even though it was a throwback to all the stuff they had been missing. Call it the Final Fantasy IX Paradox.

    So...

Yeah. Sonic Heroes is pretty cool. And it's music is KICK-ASS.

One of the best Sonic Soundtracks of all time if I do say so myself.

Earthbound - It is such a awesome game, yet it is basically unknown over here in NA. This was also my first SNES game. It holds a very special place in my Childhood.

Psychonauts - This game was awesome, and hilarious, and no one knows about it! D:

Shenmue I & II - Some of the best games, I have ever played. The story, interactivity, gameplay, and music. All of that made this game fantastic. A shame the sells for this game was pitiful. :<

I'd have to say Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hands for GBA. The use of a solar sensor on the cartridge was just really unique, and the story and gameplay were spot-on. Even with a "Produced by Hideo Kojima" branding, the game is nearly unheard of. When ever I mention it, I get blank stares.
Drill Dozer, again for the GBA. I think it failed only because it was a Game Boy game released in 2006. The story is entertaining, the gameplay, though sometimes repetitive, was fun and new. Also, ho many games use a Rumble Pak?

I guess when your studio is known for one series and one series only, like Kojima Productions and Game Freak, people won't pay attention to your new ventures until your series ends.

I emphatically agree with this post and offer thanks to the above poster for bringing these titles up.
Also, Lunar Knights. It's a shame it never caught on.
