Angry Birds Dev Declares Console Games "Dying"

    Article here: https://uk.wireless.ign.com/articles/115/1155372p1.html

This is certainly a bold statement. Since gaming is always on the up, you might question why he has said this. The reason behind his statement is due to the iPhone and Android games on the rise, the expensive £40/$50 games are going to be too much for people to buy and they will die out.

Personally, I don't see this happening. People love games, they love their consoles and people knew they would be that price when they bought them.

So my question is, do you agree with Peter Vesterbacka? Or do you think it is all rubbish?

Rubbish flash games on a platform with bad controls will not kill consoles. The iPhone is targeted towards more casual players while the consoles and the PC are for the more "hardcore" audience.

This and this; QFT. From the looks of it, it seems that people still love the "group activity" concept of console games, and you don't exactly see a group of people huddling together just to play one rubbish Flash game on a handheld. Plus little iPhone games and the like don't exactly provide the sweeping music, story, graphics, and narration, and epicness that console games such as Legend of Zelda, Super Mario (console series), Super Smash Brothers, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Metroid provide. And those are just some examples. Furthermore, you can't exactly do that much activity with a little touchscreen and a phone dialpad. Angry Birds and similar Flash games, while entertaining to some, primarily serve as diversionary fare when you just have a few minutes to spare. Portable games have their niche, but there's a reason why console games continue to sell ever since the NES era, with several current-gen console games shattering sales records in their own right.

I can't believe this was even brought up as a claim, but opinions are opinions...

Well, I don't think console games are dying because of iPhone/Android games. I love playing Angry Birds, but I still love my Wii and Xbox 360, it doesn't matter if the games are super expensive to buy.

Actually Wii is the least popular console. :X but no, the Console is not dieing, a phone or ipad can't support what a PC or Console can.

Um... this article says you're wrong. In fact, it says you're completely backwards.

On the other hand, it's true that there's little evidence suggesting the iPad, let alone a phone, is killing either PC or console gaming in any way. They can't even kill the PSP, let alone the DS! Forget killing console gaming. It ain't happening...yet.

I don't think you can really compare iPad/iPhone/etc games to full-blown console games. I think the iPad and whatnot has definitely killed any real chance Sony & Nintendo have of properly bringing stuff like DSiware/download titles to their portables since people don't really want to pay any more than like $5 for a decent game.

But the epic games and whatnot? You can't replicate that on phones and the like. You could do stuff like episodic games to eventually reach the breadth of a full game but it would never be the same. And people still buy these big $60-70 games. The people those games are marketed for are not the people who snatch up casual iPad games and vice versa. There's likely plenty of people who like both casual games and "hardcore" games but no one is going to want Call of Duty and instead go download Angry Birds for their iPhone... and vice versa. There are things the iPhone does way better than consoles, like puzzle games, and there are things consoles do that will really never be replicated well on a small screen or without a controller, like FPSes and really large-scale action games.

(Note I use iPhone/iPad/whatever really loosely and generically and I mean any phone or device that uses smaller apps. :p)

I personally hate flash games, and don't even own an iPhone or Android. And I'm sure there are tons of other people like me in that area. But...little games on phones and stuff aren't going to be enough to kill off console gaming, not by a long shot.

Far from it. The big three are still making a crapton of money from their consoles and it's very likely going to stay that way for many years. I don't see them dying out any time soon.

The only thing lamentable is how consoles came to overshadow PC gaming as much as they do.
What goes around comes around... but it won't for the time being.

Lolol. I haven't played his little "Angry Birds" game, but making one hit game doesn't give you the right to make such ballsy statements and actually have people agree with you.

Mobile phones will never have the space, memory, battery life, or processing power to be able to overtake console gaming. Not to mention the fact that they don't have joysticks, and touchscreen gaming is terrible.
I have a Pokemon Red ROM on my iPhone that I never play because I can't get used to not feeling the buttons.

As far as i'm concerned, all mobile phone games are basically arcade games.
I'm really sorry to bash all mobile phone games but I like my games to have a deeper story than "swipe to the right to try and smash all of the barrels."

I never played Angry Birds. My bros have though.
And nah, console games are not nearly close to dying. The 3DS is coming out, so naturally it diverts our attention for quite a while.

It just occurred to me a new, better theory as to why console games are suffering, rather than explaining why mobile devices killing them is ridiculous.

    Two things~
One, the 3DS is coming out. The DS has always been the most popular "non-PC" gaming system in the world, as long as I can remember. Like TJGamer said, that means diverted attention.

Two, consoles /used/ to rely on releasing new systems fairly often. However, due to the advent of online gaming and consoles trying to compete with their immortal grandfather, the PC, this has changed. It's very clear, at least to me, that consoles are trying to live longer than they used to.

In the past, consoles have had a tendency to upgrade every 5 years or so. The PS1 upgraded to the PS2 after about 5 years. The SNES upgraded to the N64 after about 5 years, the N64 upgraded to the Gamecube after about 5 years, the Gamecube upgraded to the Wii after about 5 years. The Xbox upgraded to the 360 in around 4 years, and the PS2 upgraded to the PS3 in around 6 years, which is pretty close.

Y'know how old the 360 is right now? Approximately 5.3 years. The PS3 and Wii are slightly younger. Yet... even Microsoft has stated that it wants the 360 to last until say, 2015.

That's like ten years total we're talking. That has /never/ been done before on anything except a PC. Let me explain why a PC can do this, and why it's not easy for a console.

Probably the most important two things a console does not have, is upgrade-ability, and mods. both of these things can extend a gaming platform's lifespan indefinitely. They're pretty much the core reason PC has been around and will probably continue to be around forever as a gaming platform. Mods alone could add years to a console's lifespan simply by drastically increasing the lifespan of it's games. On consoles, especially the PS3 and 360, modding is extremely limited in comparison. The Wii, actually has a fairly big modding community. It's modding community is /incredible/ for a console. If you've ever seen one of the many Brawl mods out there you'll know what I'm talking about. On the other hand, I can name 10 year old games on the PC with a /bigger/ modding community with /easier to use mods/, because hacking the Wii to use mods in the first place is pretty painful for your average gamer.

The point of all this, the real reason consoles are suffering is because A. The DS is using a better formula that works to make up for the consoles weaknesses, and B. because all three console's respective companies seem to have forgotten an integral weakness they've been covering for decades by releasing new consoles every so often. The result of this is that it will seem more and more like consoles are dying until /somebody/...probably Nintendo, releases a new console.

(Don't ask me why I said probably Nintendo. It's just a guess based on Nintendo's behavior revolving around the DS and the fact that Microsoft openly implied they weren't making a new console anytime soon.)

ILU for epic reply, since this is the discussion I was hoping for. 8D

    Anyway.
I think the reason with companies not releasing more 'big' consoles, is due to the economical climate that most of the world is in, as well as the 360 and the PS3 still being very powerful consoles. The Crytek engine has only just pushed the PS3's graphics to the limit and I am not sure about the 360.
There is no real need for a new console and if you look at the motion controllers from Microsoft and Sony, you could consider them the 'new' consoles, Microsoft's more than Sony's.

With the Kinect, that opens up so many different possibilities for games for Microsoft. They have whole body scanning and full motion control, so the sky is the limit with that for them.
With Sony, they only have a better version of the Wii's motion controller. (Don't shoot me for saying that, from what I have seen, the Move is more responsive than the Wii, but I could be wrong.)
However, even though they only have that, there are still a lot of routes they can go down with a more, hardcore development companies behind them, as Nintendo didn't really have the big AAA titles on their Wii.

As for the PC, it will always, in my opinion, be the best for graphics and, arguably, game play, more to do with controls. They have always had that on their side. I prefer playing FPS'ers on a PC, because for me, it feels smoother and easier. I use to have COD4 on there and I loved it, as an example for the controls.

I don't think there needs to be a new console as of yet, since, like I said, the motion controllers have almost taken the place of a new console. It will be an interesting few years to see what happens.
