(CNN) -- The cat of an Arkansas Democratic campaign director was "slaughtered" and found on Sunday with the word "Liberal" scrawled in spray paint on its side, Democratic congressional candidate Ken Aden told CNN on Monday.

The cat of Jacob Burris, who works for Aden in his bid for Arkansas' 3rd Congressional District, was found on Burris' doorstep on Sunday in Russellville, according to Aden.

Burris was with his four children when they found their dead pet, a mixed-breed Siamese cat, on their front doorstep.

"What's unsettling to me is that it doesn't matter what your political beliefs are, as grown adults we should be able to sit down and have a good discussion about the issues," Aden said. "This is a great district. There are so many great folks here, but there are also some disturbed people in the world, too," he added.

The cat was found with its "head bashed in to the point the cat's eyeball was barely hanging from its socket," according to a news release on Aden's website.

Aden announced his bid for Congress against incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Steve Womack on September 1. Burris joined the campaign exactly one month later as its director, Aden said.

The Russellville Police Department was investigating the incident as a case of animal cruelty, and a report was made to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday morning, Aden's website said.

Joshua McMillian, public information officer for Russellville Police Department, said there are no eyewitness statements or evidence at the scene.

"We're asking the public if they know anything about it," McMillian said.

The U.S. Animal Humane Society is offering a $2,500 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible.

The Burris family has no history of death threats against them, McMillian said. "We've increased patrols in the area as well. Right now this is only an isolated event," he said.

Aden said, "We've always been vigilant. You always have to watch out, but we haven't taken any added security precautions [because of the incident]. I honestly think it's someone being crazy."

It's no longer enough to slam a person for their political beliefs, so we've moved on to killing their pets?

Isolated incident but still a result of the political hatred. With some aspects calling for the deaths of all/most liberals, events like this shouldn't even surprise me. And personally I don't know whats worse. (The fact that we put up with, no, ALLOW a group of people to say that another group should be killed or the fact that this event doesn't surprise me.)

This is disgusting. I really hate animal cruelty and I really hate the low levels that political dialogue have fallen to. I blame a lot of the conservative leaders and figureheads for not keeping their bases in check and letting all kinds of talk from their supporters slide, like someone at a Santorum rally calling Obama Muslim, Kenyan, etc. It's 2012 and people are still doing that! At least when McCain was defacto face of conservatism he had the decency to object when he heard that kind of talk, but ever since Obama won the election it's like no one knows how to be civil anymore.

I haven't heard any conservatives condemning this act, but with how a large portion of them are all 'kill kill kill all the liberals' I wouldn't be surprised if they all thought that this was a good way to send a message.

I truly wonder just how far the hate will go before we finally decide that enough is enough. I don't like making examples of people, really I don't, but for acts like this examples are needed. It is, as far as I know, the first time something like this happened.

Don't deal in absolutes, Rev. Jeremiah. I'm a Conservative, and I think that business like this, no matter who commits the act, is utterly sickening.

Then again, I need to remember that this is a battle of good and evil, and I've cast my lot in with the thieves and the scoundrels who do nothing more than look for ways to hurt and kill the saintly liberals.

Poor wording on my part, but the all was refering to the previously mentioned Conservatives, not Conservatives in general. Your average conservative will find this act offensive, but the extreme right wing conservatives who are saying 'kill kill kill all the liberials' are more likely to support, or at least be neutral, about this act.

There are crazies on every side of the aisle. There are crazies everywhere period; regardless of gender, political beliefs, religion, etc. Some folks just aren't right in the head.
