    *is overclocking again*
3:42 (hours:minutes) so far... about 9 hours to go. (Prime95 blend test)
    Going for 4.2 GHz, 1.272v @ load.
I'm afraid to push this thing... I know that's not a lot of voltage.
Once I see anything over 1.3v, I'm afraid of frying it :/ (Even though I've seen people running them at 1.4+ for over a year).
I need the extra speed for video encoding.

4.5 would be nice, but I don't think I have a "good" chip... Some can run 4.5 stable on stock volts.

Edit: Awesome, >12 hours and still running.

I'm glad you're stable, but in all honest, 12 hours is total overkill for Prime. 3-4 is MORE than enough and most of the time a crash is going to occur in the first 15 mins. You're just putting unnecessary stress on the chip.

You're right about being safe with the voltage, though. Although you could probably get more out of it, you want to go for the highest OC at a reasonable voltage, rather than pushing it that bit further for two main reasons - not only can overvoltage shorten the lifespan (I have seen people killing these chips, but then again I hang out on an overclocking forum), but power usage and heat skyrocket with voltage.

Don't let that turn you off, though. You're not likely to hurt it unless you either use a far too high voltage or run it heavily overvolted for a good few months. If it DOES die, warranty time - you have no idea what went wrong and "what's overclocking?". :D

I'm trying to keep heat/power down, so I'm actually running undervolted most of the time. 1.4V -> 1.275. Phenoms run at a much higher voltage than Core-i chips, to clear up any confusion.

I don't have Windows on my desktop at all, so it really is just a matter of backing up the hard drives and doing it, which I don't know if I'll do now or not.

Those hard drive prices really need to go down :/
    I need some more storage.

I know, just before the flood, a friend of mine bought some 1TB drives for $15 USD. I bought a 1TB drive two years ago for 80. T_T
    EDIT:
Go indecisive me: I changed my mind, I went with a 40GB SSD, and a 2x2.5" mounting bracket. So I am going to mount the SSD for OS, and use the 250GB HDD that is currently in my laptop as storage on the build. On a plus side, I won't have to transfer my files off the drive. XD Price is now $20 lower.

    EDIT: Feb/8/2012

I've got my new computer up and running. I went with the Corsair Force Series 3 60GB SSD. Core i3 -2120, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 250GB Seagate 2.5" HDD for data storage.

Total for build, including shipping $436.99. WEI: 5.4 with graphics being the lowest.

Right. My college wants a new computer for heavy video/image processing and possible 3D rendering. The budget given to me was over the roof, so I went crazy. I can't overclock though, school doesn't want me to. So yeah, here's the setup, are there any problematic issues?

    MB/CPU: ASUS Sabertooth x79 + Intel i7 3930K @ 3.2GHz
    RAM: DDR3 1333MHz CL9 Patriot 4GB w/Heatspreader x4
    GPU: ASUS GTX590 GDDR5 3GB
HDD Boot: OCZ Vertex3 Max IOPS 120GB SATA3
    HDD Data: WD 2TB 64MB/FAEX/BLK/SATA3
    ODD: SONY 24X SATA x2
Sound: Auzen X-Fi Home Theater HD
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100 Closed-loop Liquid
    PSU: Corsair AX1200 (1200W)
    Chassis: CoolerMaster Cosmos II
    Keyboard: Corsair K90 Vengeance
Mouse: SteelSeries Sensei Pro Grade Laser
OS: Windows 7 x64 Home Premium

I know right, it's overkill. I want this in my house :(

It probably smokes my Core 2 Quad several times over, smokes my puny pair of 2GB sticks several times over, smokes my puny 9800 GTX+ several times over... 3 years can be a long time!

Awesome, but I have a few things to point out.
The GPU's probably not the best idea. Most applications can't use both sides of the dual-GPU 590. You're better off with a 580 or an equivalent Quadro unless you know it's going to use both GPUs.

Also, do they really want something as gamey-looking? Neither the Cosmos or that keyboard are particular subtle. Very nice, but you might be better off with something like a Ducky Shine White for the Keyboard and an Antec P280/Fractal R3 for the case (sound deadened and professional-looking. You can probably ditch the sound card, too, as any sound encoding is going to be done on the CPU, so unless you're driving high-end speakers or headphones ($200+) I'd reallocate those funds.

With the cash you save, go with a bigger SSD and look at mirroring the 2TB HDD with another, if the data is important.

Looks like a lot of fun, though.

This does bring me to a good topic: DO you have an SSD? and do you like it?
I have a 115GB Corsair (naturally) Force 2. Love it. In many cases, a SSD is one of the best possible upgrades you can give a system for general usage. Boot times are unimportant, it's the program response times that matter.

lol, the other day I moved some games from my SSD to my 2x1TB RAID0 array. They moved at >240MB/s. :cer_boogie:

    Good points there, thanks!

I had the Cosmos II in the list because I was struggling to even meet the budget set, LOL. And because I love how it looks xD

The keyboard was there because I had assigning macro keys in mind, which may come in handy while doing video/image processing.

They'll be using Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro and Photoshop mostly, Perhaps Cinema 4D and some others as well. Think the GPU can stay or should I still change to a 580?

    Thankies! xD

I do agree with Archer on the sound card - pretty much everyone can ditch it. Audio rendering these days is also mostly on the CPU, so it should be fine.

As for the GPU... are your projects going to take up a lot of processing power? Not all projects are the same, though I'd wager that they'd eat up quite a lot of time if the hardware's not up to the task.

Best to check up with the software vendors on support for multi-core GPUs.

Alright guys, thanks for everything! xD

Will probably down grade the sound card and check on the GPU details. Most like Adobe can support it though.

Rendering in 1080p and with 3D, could potentially need a lot of processing power, so I'd say yes.

Totally fair enough. Go for it, then. Just remember that the Fn Keys and the Delete/Home/End cluster aren't mechanical on that board, if that matters to you.

Premiere uses Cuda, which AFAIK is not supported on either the 590 or the 580. You're still better off with the 580, but if you want Cuda acceleration in Premiere, then you either need to use a hack/mod to allow it or get a Quadro (that will help you fill up the budget, lol)

You don't want to use the Quadro for gaming, however. Keep in mind that anything that DOESN'T use both GPUs on the 590 will be slower than the 580, as the 590 is only 2 560s slapped together.

    Enjoy. :cer_boogie:

Looks like I'll have to change the GPU then, we're definitely going to need Premiere Pro.

Thanks so much for all your help and finding out these for me :)

Upon, further inspection, it seems that the 580 and 570 have CUDA support under Premiere. That's not to say other cards can't be used for hardware acceleration, but CUDA is exclusive to the group listed in my link.

No problem. Forces me to research and keep up to date, lol.

*Sigh* Specifications that make this laptop look less and less impressive each day.

By the way, what do you guys think of the newer Raspberry Pi computers that are going to be released? I already have SO many plans of combining those with an Arduino to do cool Cyberpunk things around my house. I'll probably compile a minimalist Gentoo version for it and image it between SD cards, than set up a virtual machine that uses the SD card as a boot device so that I can develop on it easily. :)
