Ash's Replacement

Ash has visited al main games region as the main character until now, replacing him with a new characther would be strange. Also the anime would loose many old followers (I atleast would stop watching).

For example: I lost interest in Digimon after Tamers. There were no Tai, Sora, Matt or any other original character. 02 was good but I was a little dissapointed because the original characters didn't reprise their role as the lead characters.

I watched Beyblade, most of the V-force episodes and G-Revolution, but I only saw 1 episode of the Metal Fusion series.

    Yu-Gi-Oh same.

Now don't think I am someone who accepts any story as long the main character is the same.

I loved the Kanto series, but I didn't liked the Orange Island and the Johto series missing most of the episodes of the latter between the Johto League Champions season . I begun then with the Ash against Gary episodes again. I liked the Hoenn series and the Sinnoh series were awesome. I hated the Unova series and the Kalos series are looking great until now.

By Beyblade I didn't liked the V-force series.

    But enough of Off-topic.

The show would loose many fans if Ash would be replaced and why change what works well?

A full origins anime would only make sense if they remake Red/Green- Red/Blue again.

In case you haven't noticed, the anime's been losing quite a bit of its fanbase for quite some time, not to mention its target audience, so your claim about it losing it if they replace Ash means nothing, as it's been in the red for quite some time anyways regarding ratings (I definitely know AG and DP did worse than Johto, with DP doing worse than AG).

Of course, just because I wouldn't see Pokémon anymore if they replace Ash it doesn't mean that others wouldn't too. Peoples taste change specially with younger audiences.

Also the fact that they replaced Misty could be a reason why the ratings dropped.

But like I said Ash has visited every main game region (plus locations which don't exist in the games at all) in the anime. Ash is the main character of the anime for 17 years now. If another character was to be the new protagonist he/she would be in the B/W series (since many people say it was to be a reboot) so I doubt someone else becomes Ash's place.

  • I would be fine with it if it was Red, haha. Other than that, I'm not sure how I'd feel. I used to love Ash but as of recent, he honestly annoys me more than anything. Although the last time I saw him was in BW.....

The problem is that they have a huge decrease even in the target demographic. The older fans leaving is one thing, but if you're failing to maintain the age bracket the show is actually geared towards, that's a huge problem. Mathematically, if the older generation leaves, the younger generation would fill the void, have about as many as before to replenish lost numbers, not exactly decreasing in number or ratings percentages. However, in this particular case, the ratings are going down for each succession despite it being composed of little kids, which means it actually is doing exceptionally poorly.

And yes, Misty's removal was definitely one of the reasons for the decrease in ratings. I doubt too many people were happy with that director's admission that they viewed all girls as only being there for "eyecandy," either.

Yeah I wasn't happy with Misty leaving the team too. Also the writers sure noticed it and feared a drop of the ratings making Brock come back for the Hoenn region.

Also the anime now deserves the decrease of the Ratings after showing us the Unova series. It is for me the worst series of all (even worse than the Johto series) and Brock's and Dawn's (and Misty's and May's) replacement weren't very good. Saying this and after 17 years watching Ash's journey in the Pokémon World I believe that Ash being replaced would really make the ratings drop significantly.

From the little I've heard of Iris's character, she seemed like she was like Misty (in that she wasn't of the female anime stereotype [look up Love Hina or see the Fiorello Fangirls in Princess v. Princess to see what I mean by that]), but never having actually watched Best Wishes, I can't make the call whether she truly is not of that stereotype or not, unlike May or Dawn. As far as Serena, never having watched XY obviously, I can't comment one way or another about her, though the romantic subplot seemed to be bad writing especially with the implication that she may have been the first girl his age, meaning Misty wasn't that.

And honestly, the characters aside (not because I liked them, but simply I have no way of gauging them as I haven't seen the series), I have to agree with you about Unova being the worst. I get it, it's supposed to be a reboot, but couldn't they at LEAST not have Ash mistake Iris for a friggin Axew as if he somehow got brain damage?

And I also am very irritated that Ash got the same ranking in the league that he got in Kanto. At least with Kanto, he has the excuse of actually starting on his journey. Ranking Top 16 in Unova, meaning he actually did worse than Sinnoh, was just terrible. Honestly, Unova now officially surpasses AG as being the worst league turnout (Say what you will about Johto, at least he actually increased a rank in that region, while he didn't increase in AG).

And they also did a lot of wasted potential in NOT showing a Pokémon Gym Leader tournament like in the games. I mean, not only would it have obviously given a much needed opportunity for Misty to return even temporarily (Brock unfortunately won't make it as he's not actually a gym leader anymore. Probably would still be one if he had done the responsible thing after AG and returned after Forrest blew it big time during Battle Frontier, possibly even after Johto after quelling the disaster in the first place), but it would have been a great way to advertise Black 2 and White 2 which did feature that aspect. Instead, they brought in Dawn who really didn't have any real business in the region. I mean, Ash doesn't interrupt his own goals to visit his friends no matter how much he might miss them, so why should Dawn basically get away from doing contests in Hoenn for Unova when it doesn't even have contests? At least with May, she actually had a reason besides meeting friends to go to Sinnoh, the Wallace Cup and all.

Plus, some of the attempts at Team Rocket being threatening, while it is nice they actually are treated as something of a threat, were, pardon the French, but half-assed. Take the arc where Meowth became a double agent, for example: Not only did it become somewhat predictable by the end of the arc that he'd probably betray them, but they apparently thought it was a "good" idea (NOT) to have Jessie and James act as though Meowth actually was fired despite there not being any evidence to suggest that they were being listened in on (I mean, honestly, if Ash and co were listening in from the bushes I could understand, but from what I could gather from what I read, Ash and co. were not anywhere near them at all, and how can they even bug them if they only just discovered what happened). You want an actual method of showing to the audience that the guy who is working with you is actually scamming you that works well, look at how Dr. Wily handled his treacherous plans for Mega Man, Bright Man, and Pharaoh Man in Issue 37 of Archie Comic's Mega Man.

    ArchieEddieCreation.jpg

The way shown here, the audience is in the know about Wily actually planning to backstab the heroes, yet at the same time, its done in a way that keeps the other characters in-universe in the dark in a pretty good way.

And I also wasn't particularly happy with how they decided to handle Team Rocket being threatening in the first Unova episode. I mean, yeah, I like they actually beat Ash, but having them beat one of Ash's rookie Pokémon would have sufficed enough, especially considering how their second appearance in the overall anime did have them losing quite pathetically to a rookie Pokémon (Ash's Caterpie, who was not only outclassed by Koffing, Ekans, and Meowth by a substantial amount in not only experience, but was pretty obviously just barely hanging on thanks to Ash's earlier foolishness of sending Caterpie off to fight a Pidgeotto and nearly getting it killed while Ekans, Koffing, and especially Meowth were pretty obviously much fresher).

Other than possibly Iris not being of the female anime stereotype, probably the only good things about the series is that we actually got a reunion with Ash's Butterfree after quite a while since a reunion was promised (granted, they still have yet to actually show a similar reunion with Pidgeot despite it actually being easier to find than Ash's Butterfree, but at least we've got Butterfree, as well as further proof that he didn't die, not that we needed the proof anyways), and that Iris, unlike a certain other female gym leader who left the show, actually was granted the opportunity to pursue her dream rather than being cooped up in a gym doomed to basically become stagnate and losing to rookie trainers and/or rookie Pokémon a'la JJM in the third episode of the overall anime/original series, and all against her will to boot.

Iris is a rip-off of Misty. She is a Gym Leader in the games, becomes one of Ash's companion, makes fun of Ash and want's to be a specialist of a Pokémon type (Misty=Water, Iris=Dragon).

And honestly, the characters aside (not because I liked them, but simply I have no way of gauging them as I haven't seen the series), I have to agree with you about Unova being the worst. Ash didn't saw Axew with Iris. While he wonders why it was in a diferent color (even with the possibilty of being shuny) he trusted his Pokedex and he thought Iris was the Dragon Pokémon.

Well they did advertise Black 2 and White 2 with the Gym Leaders of the games and directing movies, and not everyone is the same, just because Ash doesn't cares visiting old firends (cough Pidgeot cough) it doesn't mean that others would do the same. The tournament you are talking about wasn't bad but since it wasn't directly like the games it was a fail in my opinion.

Being a rip-off is a bit bad, but as long as Iris isn't of the female anime stereotype like May and Dawn were (you know, how the Love Hina girls, the Battle Vixen girls, the Fiorello Fangirls in the episode Princess vs. Princess, and/or Maron from Dragon Ball Z [that's Krillin's ex-girlfriend, not his daughter, BTW]), I can forgive that. Besides, I can cite at least one difference between the two that is definite: Iris at least actually is pursuing her goal, while Misty can't do so even if she wanted to thanks to her broken bird sisters forcing her to be stuck at Cerulean Gym, basically being weakened to Episode 3 JJM levels, and she doesn't even want to be there.

Speaking of stereotypes and similarities, from what you've seen of Iris, did Iris have any similar incidents in any of the episode to Misty in the episode Princess vs. Princess (ie, basically not behaving like squealing animals that one could call girls [the Fiorello Fangirls].)? That's actually something I need to know to determine whether Iris is truly not of the stereotype or not.

Ash didn't saw Axew with Iris. While he wonders why it was in a diferent color (even with the possibilty of being shuny) he trusted his Pokedex and he thought Iris was the Dragon Pokémon.

Okay, but it's still no excuse considering the Axew image in the Pokedex was clearly not similar at all to Iris, even with the hairstyle. Heck, Axew isn't even the same size as Iris.

And he also had the excuse of Charizard not obeying him.

But the ranking isn't the worst for me but yes that he didn't used his old Pokémon.

And Team Rocket forcing him to be late for the match by luring him into a trap as well, basically leaving him with no other option but to use Charizard (as Bulbasaur and Pidgeotto were already exhausted).

And I also prefer that characters actually be shown to be improving, so while Ash not using his old Pokémon is bad, I can forgive that compared to his doing a poor job at the region.

Well they did advertise Black 2 and White 2 with the Gym Leaders of the games and directing movies, and not everyone is the same, just because Ash doesn't cares visiting old firends (cough Pidgeot cough) it doesn't mean that others would do the same. Wait, hold it. Did they have the tournament or not? I'm asking because from what I'm reading from its article on Bulbapedia, they skipped the tournament in the Anime.

I really liked it to see Team Rocked being badasses bad people, it made them seem important to the series.

It's not that they are depicted as badasses bad people that I have a problem with (heck, I actually hated how they were depicted in AG and DP). Its just that they didn't do as good as a job as I would have hoped. The Meowth double agent arc as I cited really did poorly regarding such a scenario. Was Jessie and James claiming Meowth was indeed fired in a private conversation to themselves, that wasn't eavesdropped, really necessary? It came across as random, really.

Actually Butterfree didn't came back, he appeared only in one of Ash's flashbacks.

Alright, my mistake. The Decolore episode guide did make it seem as though Ash's Butterfree did actually reappear, though.

From Megevolution & Origin's rating , I say that Pokemon will get the same TV rating this show get now with or without Ash.
But if Writer/Director are soooooooooo afraid then they can keep Ash but they should change his profession .
For example , Ash win the League and become eligible to compete in ''World Tournament''
Then In Gen VII , he goes to new region as a Mega-Stone collector and help the new ''Main girl'' to win Gym-battle while investigating an Evil Team & Legendary Pokemon.
People will complain if Ash quit Badge-Collecting without becoming a champion But if he quit Badge-Collecting after becoming a champion then nobody will complain because he's a champion .

From everything you said the only thing I can answer you is that there was a tournament with the name Pokémon World Tournament: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Junior_Cup

Which was completely handed to Trip with a Haxed untouchable Serperior Because of his ''Love-story'' with Alder .
The Real reason offcourse he was Writer/Director's Love child.
    I will look forward to Ash's Hawlucha , Talonflame & Greninja .
Let see how many battle they win without getting a single scratch.

I can't imagine Ash as an Mega Stone researcher and collecting them, and if Ash get's replaced, it would surely be another male +rotagonists since most of the female ones appeared as the major characters.

And actually it doesn't makes sense for me Ash becoming Champion from a region which isn't his home. I always thought that he would come back to Kanto and participate on the Indigo League again fighting the Elite four from there and becoming the champion in his home region. It would be wierd Ash being a Foreign Champion first. (I always saw Orange Islands as part of Kanto with their own rules).

Like I said the fact that you now (and probably others) expect that Ash looses every tournament might make that he wins one at least.

    I said Mega-Stone collector , not researcher !
Actually he could use that as a excuse to hide his real identity as a champion.
I would prefer Ash being train by Looker after he become champion in order to a Investigator so he can help Pokemon .
    I mean
    -First Ash become champion

-He join Looker's agency in Luimoise city and work there since he has to wait one year before he can participate in ''Champion League'' .

-During that time , Ash learn to be investigator from Looker and solve various problem in Kalo .

-He use Charizard as a Transportation for going to various city of Kalo.

-Ash journey as a ''Challenger'' come to an end after he beat Diantha and face ''Team Rocket'' in one final battle i

-3 year pass and Ash reappear with a new name & identity in a new region and travel with the new Main girl who's a challenger & Tsundere for an unknown reason.

-Ash took over as a Protagonist again to participate in ''World Tournament'' and also to deal with a crime syndicate that planning something terrible in ''World Tournament''

    Thats what should happen !
I don't know if its the best idea or not But it beat repeating the same story over and over again during every series.

Oh boy, I would welcome a replacement. If Ash as a character keeps getting any flatter he'll have a fractal dimension lower than 1 and be crushed into a black hole.

They can just end this generation like a cheesy ship fic and make him (eventually) reciprocate Serena's feelings and live as a champion happily ever after, or a 10-year old Pokemon trainer happily every after. It doesn't matter, just change this dirty pair of underwear.

Ideally, we need a completely new female protagonist but the same Pikachu. I wouldn't know how to pull that off though.

    Simple--

    -- Make Ash champion

-- Move the story 3 year later

-- A new Girl claim she will become a Pokemon Master like her idol Ash ketchum who disappeared 3 year ago.

-- She run into a strange 13 year old Boy with Pikachu who claim himself as a Weak Mega-stone collector who strangely look familiar.

-- They get attack by Pokemon .

-- A girl tries to fight and fell unconscious.

--She then saved by that Boy But he give the credit to the girl.

--The Boy introduce himself as ''Red'' but he's actually Ash who hiding the identity for some unknown reason. He also changed his hair style.

--Ash join her in her journey and act as her mentor because she remind him of his younger self.

Well if Ash quits as a Pokémon Trainer there would be a good reason why. Quitting Pokémon training just to colect Mega-Stone isn't a good one, that's why I thought Ash being a researcher.

And Ash will never win be champion, like I said the Indigo League is his region's League and would make more sense that he would come back to that league to become champion, all other ones are just to fill episodes and to end the region's series. That said I doubt Ash will ever be replaced.

Also I can't imagine Ash as a investigator, I don't think has the mentality for that.

And like I said, if he get's replaced, the new protagonist will most likely be male.

Who said Ash quitting as a Pokemon trainer !
Champions are trainer even if they quit Challenging Gym .
Also , This is a thread about ''Replacing Ash''.
The main reason Ash haven't became ''Champion'' it because writer afraid to replace him.
After all , A champion has no business in challenging Gym.
So , I just express an idea to make Ash a champion and keep in in the show at the same time .
Writer/Director can keep Ash if they just switch role.
And let be honest , PEOPLE ARE JUST TIRED OF THE ANIME REPEATING THE SAME STORY OVER & OVER AGAIN!!!
Do you honestly believe Pokemon can go forever with lazy predicable writing ?
    Everything has an End !!!
Pokemon use to get 18% rating but now they can't get more then 6.00% rating .
That the prove of Pokemon's popularity decreasing .
Even The Director of Pokemon Admitted of having ''Odd-time'' in a interview at ''Imagine-Nation''
If Pokemon Anime hoping the ''Doreamon Fans'' will keep them alive then they should learn that ''Doreamon fans'' has other Better anime to look forward to instate of Pokemon
After all , Pokemon is nowhere popular as Doreamon and doesn't get nearly as high rating as Doreamon get.
At the moment , Pokemon Anime need a completely different story !
Because Pokemon Anime won't last until Gen VIII if the Anime keep repeating the same story over & over again where Ash have new sidekick , Ash challenge gym , Ash get badge , Ash compete and lose at the League ,Ash go to an filler journey if the new gen doesn't release , The whole Start all over again.
The only reason fans still watch this anime because somewhere in their mind they still believe Ash will become champion someday and they wait for that Someday.

Yeah, I agree. They do need to mix it up somewhat in a consistent fashion to make sure the show can attract viewers. The series ratings have been gradually tanking since AG when they removed Misty, and their recent actions are more likely to alienate even potential new viewers away from the franchise. They should have just replaced Ash back when AG started, heck, when BW started especially.

And besides, the show can't last forever anyways. Aside from instances of VAs dying off, the ratings would probably kill it off prematurely if they continue down the road they chose. Even if the Anime does end, that doesn't mean the end of the Pokémon franchise. Don't forget, the DiC Super Mario shows ended with Super Mario World, yet Mario is still going very strong. Same with the Legend of Zelda, whose show was cancelled with only one game adaptation. Even Mega Man, who hasn't exactly gotten a real new game recently, still managed to outlive the DiC animated series by a significant margin, even getting a comic book serial by Archie Comics. Let's not forget SatAM (the Sonic series), which despite its cancellation, the franchise still went on. If they could pull it off, Pokémon most certainly can as well.

They really should have Ash be removed from the main cast, or at least given much less focus, as it's getting tiring that he continues on his journeys and still hasn't gotten the rank of Pokémon Master, and even worse, thanks to BW, he probably won't be able to get it for possibly four more regions. At least with Johto and Sinnoh's losses, he actually increased a rank, and even Kanto was still progress as it was his first league. AG and BW's losses don't have him increasing at all, and in the latter case, he actually decreased. Actually, they really should just have Ash win a league and the Elite 4 just to get it over with. I know some people want to focus on the journey rather than the end result, but honestly, even that has its limits, and its getting to the point that even focusing on the journey is getting far too tedious.

  • There's more to Ash's journey than just battling. Sure, he wants to be a Pokémon master, but that requires more than just grinding his Pokémon battle after battle. Whenever we meet an Elite Four or Champion in the anime, they always stress on how important it is to bond with your Pokémon and to enjoy your journey as much as possible. Their advice shows clear with Ash and how he has been acting over the last couple series. You can't expect a young boy to just suddenly master the art of Pokémon battling within a few series. That's why he is always making the most of his journey and having fun as much as possible. It's not like he never trains, anyways. Besides, the anime as a whole would be a complete waste if Ash was offed. What's the point of following him throughout all of the regions if he amounts to nothing but a semi-skilled Trainer? Comparing Ash's results in the leagues doesn't prove his skill increases- it could just be a matter that the leagues have tougher competition. Believe it or not, other regular Trainers can be more skilled than Ash. I doubt any replacement would progress faster than him. The anime isn't all about Ash- it's about Pokémon in general and how immersive the world is. That's why we always see a lot of focus on other characters and their experiences with what the Pokémon world has to offer. That's the goal of the anime, and any other character would be doing just the same thing. Just because Ash is progressing toward his goal at a less-than-speedy rate doesn't justify him being replaced. Beyond that, Ash is nothing like he was when he first started. He know knows how to test his skills and how to judge his opponents.

Considering at least two instances in DP pointed out that it was the first time he made Top 4, whether it actually meant a skill increase or not, the writers certainly intended for the rankings to be considered such. Not to mention generally in shows like this, rankings are intended to imply to the audience at least that the person was getting stronger or more skilled even if that's not necessarily the case in real life.

And I know that there's more to Pokémon training than just battling, but that's the thing most focused on, especially regarding leagues and all of that, so that's what we have to go with.

Yes, there are probably better trainers than Ash (the fact that there's a Top 8, Top 4, Top 2, First Place, Elite 4, and Champion makes very clear that there are people far more skilled than Ash, especially in the instances where he achieves a ranking below that.), but even still as noted before, the rankings, at least during DP, were intended to show or at least imply progress.

And I know not many people suddenly master the art of battling. After all, he didn't win Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, or Sinnoh, heck, Unova especially. However, with the exception of Unova and Hoenn, they at least made sure he actually improved by actually achieving a new higher rank. And I'm not asking that he suddenly master it. Otherwise, I'd be complaining till the cows come home about his not winning the Indigo League. But there's a big difference between not winning first try and basically blowing your chances (which is what happened in Unova). I can handle losses as long as there's an actual indication that he became more skilled or stronger.

It because Pokemon Franchise will leave on with or without the Anime , The Anime is in far worst position then other Pokemon Franchise .
It takes a whole lot of money to make an Anime So if Producer notice Pokemon's Popularity is same as with or without Anime then they don't need to waste money on Anime.
Instate , They could use the money for greater project !
So , Writer/Director should come up with something with or without Ash before the Producer cancel the Anime .

Plus , It not like Ash is an awesome protagonist who can't be replaced ! Honestly , If Writer make a new Protagonist who's like Sora (No game no life) , Conan (Detective Conan)
, Gold (Pokespe) , Harata(Pokemon DPA) Or Izayoi (Mondaiji Tachi) then Fan will forget Ash ever Existed!

Ash is completely boring ! He being an Underdog doesn't make him interesting Or likeable.
Actually being An Underdog doesn't guaranty that he's will be interesting ! Just like a lot of Digimon Fan like Taiki (Digimon Fusion) who happened to be a ''Child Prodigy'' While find Tagiru (Digimon Fusion) completely annoying despite he being the new Protagonist & a complete Underdog.
Truth is , People doesn't like Underdog Protagonist! People like to see The Protagonist being treated like an Underdog by other character even if he/she stronger then Everyone.
Like Tatsuya Shiba (Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei) Or Touma (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
Fan simply want to see The Protagonist stun everyone who look down upon him by unleashing his true Power.
Ya Ash is very kind But 90% Kids Anime Protagonist are Super Kind & Selfless .
As for Bonding with Pokemon , Its an Anime about Pokemon so that a fundamental quality all Pokemon Protagonist should have .
But Good Progonist has their own characteristic that wasn't a requirement for the show and those Characteristic makes a Protagonist unique .
For example Some Protagonist are Sly , Some Protagonist are cold ,Some Protagonist are Airhead Some Protagonist are perverted etc.
Unfortunately , Ash's characteristic beyond Requirement aren't really cool !
Currently , Ash is just too freaking nice & Innocent ! Like an Harem Anime protagonist form VN .
    Honestly , The Original Ash who was Arrogant , Prideful , Show-off , Attention-seeker , Mischievous & Sarcastic was better .

FYI : BW Series didn't Brought the Old Ash back , Truth is , BW Ash is more incompetent & Idiotic version of DP Ash .
