  • Hi all,

I have some more shiny news from my alpha sapphire. That game is loaded i swear. After the wurmple, I have gotten two more shinies.

For one, I was grinding a sharpedo for the story line in the route next to lilycove and i got a shiny shuppet. It appeared in a random encounter horde, just from running around and trying to level up my sharpedo.

A couple days after that, I found out about the dexnav chaining supposed method, and I got a shiny oddish on route 119. It is mild, 31 in HP and SpD, and has teeter dance. I'm gonna make it a bellosom i think, and it will e fun to use in FFAs with my friends.

I'm intrigued as to the shiny rate for mirage spots. If they are really 1/512, i might consider SRing for a shiny in one.

  • So the other day (Thanksgiving, I think?) I was playing through OR and found my second random encounter shiny - an Electrike! I was looking for a Linoone to catch for Surf, then was thinking about how cool it'd be to finally get a blue Electrike (never got one in the original Gen 3 games), and the next encounter was a horde battle with a shiny in the mix! Was pretty wicked. I haven't touched it since I caught it, it's just been sitting all pretty in the PC.

I just now got to Groudon, but I'm gonna wait until my Relicanth and Sceptile are a bit more leveled up to try and go for anything (Yawn on Relicanth, False Swipe on Sceptile). I'm not sure which Legendary I'm gonna wanna go for first, but I'm leaning towards one of the Lake Trio pixies.

Still no in game shiny for me either ( have Shiny beldum). Still in slateport. I actually replay the original ruby and emerald many times since I could transfer them to ds Dimond and pearl, so so far its all familiar with new surprises. Didn't realize til now how much I really liked the games, probably because I understood it more since I was older.

Edit: very jealous of the blue electrike. Just love electric types.

Anyway I've finally caught my dream shiny, a Drifloon. Will post pictures eventually. Or not.

  • Paulthagerous' guide to Shiny Chaining with the DexNav

Ok guys, here is my beginners guide on how to shiny chain based on my experience. Hopefully the explanation is clear, but please ask if you are left with any questions!

    Before you begin:

Here's a list of things you need/should have before you start:

    DexNav (obviously)

    • You must have caught/own one of the Pokemon you are hunting. It also helps to have a high capture level for the Pokemon, up to a max of 999. Apparently the higher the level the better the odds (though this has yet to be confirmed).

Repels. Max repels last longest, but Super repels are best value per step.

Pokeballs. Depending on what you are hunting, you should use different types (at a minimum use Ultrabals over standard Pokeballs), but you should always have plenty of these anyway!

The right lead Pokemon. This might be one with Arena trap if your target has teleport (like the Ralts I was hunting) or Synchronize if you are trying for a specific nature etc. On your team should ideally have quite a few 100 accuracy moves with lots of PP, and (if you want to save your MasterBall) a move or 2 to help weaken it (I had a Metagross with Hold Back in my party to leave it on 1 hp).
    • A large amount of grass (optional). This makes it easier to keep the chain going.

    • Sneak O Power (optional). Personally, I didn't need it, but if you are struggling to sneak up on them this will help.

Patience. You may get lucky and have one within 10 minutes, but the odds are still far from certain and it may still take hours to get one.

    Basic Process:
Go to your desired route and have the right Pokemon in the lead spot. Use a repel. Then use the DexNav to find one of your targets and sneak up on it. You then must either defeat it or capture it. Once you beat/capture it, search again for another one and repeat.

    Surely it's not that simple....

There are a bunch of little rules you have to follow, and if you do then you will (hopefully) get a shiny eventually. Sometimes it might come after a chain of 10 (mine was on my 4th chain, was only 14 encounters in), sometimes you could be well over 100. However, in my experience, it is a lot more straight forward than previous generations, and your chain is a lot less likely to 'break' for no reason! Of course, it is still entirely luck based as to when/if one decides to shine up! NOTE: When you do get a shiny one, the sprite before you enter battle will be of a normal colored one, so don't assume when you start the fight it isn't shiny!

    • If you run from a Pokémon, the chain WILL break.

    • If the Pokémon flees/teleports etc the chain WILL break

    • If you fail to sneak up on it (you are spotted/it disappears after a certain time) the chain WILL break.

    • If you have a standard wild encounter the chain WILL break

    • If your repel runs out, DO use another one (to prevent the wild encounters above)

    • You CAN leave the grass, as long as you stay in the same route you will be OK.

    • If you wait too long after a battle finishes, it WILL NOT break the chain.

    • If you need to take a break, best to leave your 3DS on at the 'What should XX Do?' battle screen – I left it for an hour and came back, and my chain was still intact.

    • Once the battle screen closes and you can search again, MOVE INTO A GOOD LOCATION - somewhere near a lot of grass makes it less likely to find another one.

    • If you search for another one but it comes up with the 'there are no Pokémon nearby error message' then:
    o Don't panic – the chain isn't broken yet
o Move and search for another one.
o If another Pokémon pops up in the DexNav, this is a GOOD thing. As long as you battle it then the chain is OK – even if it is a different species – as long as you haven't violated the time limit to find another Pokémon from the previous battle.
o After you beat this one, you can search for your target again and you will be back on track with your chain still intact!

    • You can tell if you are still on track by the levels you face (at least until around 100 encouters when it may reset the levels). You will face 4 in a row at the beginning level, then one 10 levels higher, then they drop down and you face 4 that are 1 level higher than the previous 5. If you suddenly fall back to the beginning level something went wrong! However, if there is one that is higher than it should be that's OK - it's not an exact pattern.
    o EG, lvl: 3,3,3,3,14,4,4,4,4,15,5,5,5,5,16,6,6,6,6.......
o If you do encounter a different species and it's level doesn't match up DONT PANIC – just make sure when you see the next one of the type you are hunting that it is as high as it should and you are ok.

    Does it Work?

    Yes!

And that wraps it up! As said above, feel free to let me know if you have any questions!

  • Hello! I'm new to shiny hunting, but i get most of it. 4 days ago, i decided i was going to hunt in my SS, and Today i got a Shiny Cyndiquil! I'm Quite happy about it, being Quirky and female. I hope to find more Shiny Pokemon in the future, and I'm mostly going for Under-Used Pokemon.

  • Hi all,

I again have some more good news! But first congrats for the ho-oh, and the kakuna and ralts and any other shinies i may have missed.

My first proper ORAS hunt is complete! After 413 horde encounters (2065 pokemon seen) Audio the whismur decided to shine. Over the last couple of days i have been hunting a lot. I am also 400 encounters into a friend safari hunt. I also had some pretty bad luck earlier this week, losing a dexnav chain of over 160 without anything shining, so i'm glad something shined.

I am a little disappointed with whismur, though, because my timid synch failed for naughty nature, but a shiny is a shiny i guess.

Anyway, good luck on all hunts,

  • Hi all,

    Welcome to the club Rankumander.

I didn't have time to congratulate anyone on any new shinies this post, as this is my second post today, within maybe six hours.

My friend safari decided to be kind to me after i broke the odds. 714 encounters into my friends fire type safari, and I am the proud owner of Pegasus the shiny ponyta. In a safari with Larvesta, Ponyta and Ninetales.

It is bold, with perfect attack and defense IVs and its hidden ability, flame body. I know this is unconventional, but i might make it a physical wall.

Anyway, good luck on all hunts.

  • Welcome to the club Rankumander, and congrats on all those chain shinies and the Ho-ohs and Azelf!

I myself am taking a quick break from 1/8192 hunting to get and Entei and POSSIBLY a Reshiram (just so that I'll have at least one WSHC point) from ORAS.
Then I'll be going straight back to more Jigglypuff phases in Leafgreen and Firered.

-rubs hands together- this is gonna be one fun wshc lol.
