Honestly I think .GIF- and meme-only replies are rather spammy and don't contribute to a conversation. Sure, it may be completely relevant, but it's too relaxed, too Reddit-9Gag'gy.

It's not a bad thing, but to me a forum is more than just a picture contest. If the 4/25 rule bothers people so much, just spoiler it out. It's basically like it's not there. Really, though, even this shouldn't be allowed given that it circumvents discussion :pink_no:

I can see it being OK in some forums - particularly, that spam board - but I don't really think PC is the place for Socially Awkward Penguin or some random .GIF that, yes, may be completely relevant and utterly hilarious, but overall doesn't contribute to a conversation.

I think the disestablishment of the global 4/25 rule is fine. I believe very firmly that this should be a decision made per section, I don't even mind if they choose to opt out and continue to uphold the 4/25 rule if they feel the current global rule was necessary or effective for their section. I just think this is simply an administrative change that will make each section itself more effectively flexible and such, now that there isn't necessarily a mechanism enforcing such a thing globally.

It also opens up and removes the unnecessarily enforced limit on places it was not meant to be enforced upon, blog comments and VMs being two such examples which are basically user-moderated zones where the user who the profile/blog belongs to can opt to enforce similar rules or not if they felt that unnecessarily short messages were being posted. (Not that it's strictly necessary that they do so, or enforce anything at all, just that they could if anything became problematic for them in some way)

I do like the way the staff is going about this, and I don't expect that any section which relied upon this rule would ever be affected; they will just simply opt to import a similar/same rule into their section specific rules to be enforced, and have the full support of the higher staff in doing so.

sometimes you just want to react with a GIF, or quote a witty post with the word "rekt". Those posts contribute meaning to the discussion (although not a lot) and should be fine. Quoting and saying "this" or "tbh" or "imo ^" is SPAM and should be taken to the Sentret.

If you fear for the forum's maturity, please. LTT allows that shit and is fine, regardless of ages.

I just thought of exactly what it reminds me of (to post GIFs only or one-word replies). I still hold that it doesn't contribute to an active, positive and thoughtful discussion / conversation, but asides being closely related to 9Gag/Reddit, it's like turning the forum into an IRC. We have an IRC for one-bit replies and casual banter / you can post links to GIFs and receive the same response. The IRC just isn't used very much. Maybe we can change that.

I used to find 9Gag and Reddit funny, then I took an arrow to the knee but now the comment section is just annoying. Again, it could be completely relevant. I just don't think it's the place here except on the spam board.

the irc will always be a wasteland that should be made clear above all else

it's not that big a deal though
most posts on the forum are just casual banter between members, simply confined to an overarching topic. these discussions really only extend to 'this is how i feel about a subject. here is a witticism i care for. haha.', d&d excluded. disabling the character minimum at a forum's request is hardly going to degrade conversation that much. sometimes a gif of bjork thrashing a reporter's skull into the ground expresses one's feelings much more appropriately than 'i do not like this, eeeeerr.'

i think you're just giving a bit too much credit to the community in terms of the level of discussion they partake in

I don't know how to respond to this without being condescending to the community, but "perhaps"? I don't know lol I agree that maybe this is the case (basically what I want to get at).

I mean, if it ends up changing and people start spamming GIFs and it becomes super relaxed, there's not much that can obviously be done from my vantage point about it. It'd just be a huge turn-off overall for me. Memes and GIFs are part of a community that I don't really willingly participate in, so I think I'm just stigmatizing it because of what I associate those images with - crudeness, immaturity, etc.

I'll be darned if someone answers one of my well-written posts with a meme, though. I'd actually find it insulting to have a well-written piece quoted by someone who only follows up with something like:

Spoiler:

It's not if it'll happen. It's when. Not just to me, but eventually someone will be hit with that, and although initially it might be humorous, it risks to become either tiresome, irritating or (as mentioned before) insulting.

I definitely wouldn't appreciate having one of my well-written posts reponded to with a GIF or a meme or some other image in any case. Even one-liners: why even bother to comment at all if you're just going to post "lol" or "true dat" or "rekt"? It might even encourage thoughtful posters to not put in the same effort anymore because of lack of appreciation for good structure, format and vocabulary.

x

Anyway, I guess we'll see what happens from here. Maybe it won't become some sort of infection, but given the popularity of 9Gag and Reddit, I'm putting up a front from the get-go. No trust here lol

Spoiler:

I think what she means is that although we're not necessarily a meme/GIF Reddit community, we're not a huge discussion-heavy based community either. We're more of a weird hybrid between the two where we're a "post-and-go" community that doesn't really interact with one another as much as maybe you or myself would like. Me personally, I don't see that much interaction from user to user - mainly a user will see a title of a thread, post there, and then either not return or just not interact with other members.

That's at least how I interpret what Harley Quinn meant by giving the community too much credit. And if I am correct with that assertion, then I'd have to side with her on this one.

You know, this is kind of right and I never even thought of it. The thought of responding to long-winded posts with pathetic one-word answers or memes could be not only rude, but imply that they weren't even paying attention. Sometimes it can be difficult to come up with answers to long posts like that, but yeah.

We would still have a SPAM rule in place, and the moderators would watch out for posts that border on that as well as for rude replies. Just like they do now.

It's still undergoing discussion, as it's part of a larger discussion that's still ongoing. I'll make sure to post here when something is reached, as long as I'm not beaten to it, haha.

For what it's worth, I'd rather we had a required minimum amount of effort to put into posts.
