Rambling, putting in Spoiler to save space
    Spoiler:

To what extent is the brony community alright? At what point does it cross over from an odd fascination to something darker?

There are hundreds of fanfics that make MLP a lot darker than it's portrayed in the show
And actually looking at the series with an adult mind, you can find a lot of terrifying things in the show itself (How many times have young girls wandered into what is said to be one of the most dangerous places in Equestria? There's two magical star-beasts living in a cave right next to town. The baby alone towers over every building; the mother is nearly three times that size. There's also a dragon living in the forest. And (literal) Timber Wolves...

How do you feel about the often-quoted rationalisation for grown men watching a show meant for little girls: that it teaches them morality, friendship, etc?

Everyone is welcome to watch whatever they want. Being rude about it doesn't make you the better person.

Is it hypocritical for someone to judge bronies if they enjoy another animated kids show?

    Yeah.

Okay so. I myself have watched a few episodes of the show, and it was okay. I did find it a little feminine, but probably because it /is/. But what I'm saying is, what gives you, or anyone the right, to ask these questions? Do you make forum threads asking how people feel about gays? (I do not mean to compare the two communities at all) But, how does it effect you even in the slightest? The brony community stays in the confines of the brony community. They do not bother other people. Yet you still feel the need to start discussions about how 'dark' their shows are?

I asked the questions because the brony community is often a hot point of contention for those who are aware of it, lol. Please calm down.

It's feminine because its intended audience is little girls. However, is a show being feminine a bad thing? We call Transformers masculine, but does that fact alone affect the quality of the show? Yet you don't really have either men or women or saying "Transformers was okay, but I found it a little masculine." Why are feminine things considered inherently inferior or embarrassing?

I really don't have any strong feelings about the show, but the way people talk about it is fascinating, and raises a lot of questions around masculinity and femininity.

I don't see anything wrong with bronies. I mean, I know there's the porn and weird fanifics/youtube videos, but that applies to any fandom, including pokemon... in fact, especially pokemon. Otherwise, it's just people liking what they like, and not letting society hold them down. Rock on bronies.

  • Howard Stern covers a lot of my views on the Brony fandom, to be honest. Frankly I won't sugarcoat the fact that I think it's all manner of weird. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with that. To me it's a bit extreme, but it takes all kinds of people to make the world go round. It's like obsessing over anime to me, or cats. Though sometimes I think things can be valued more than they were ever intended to.

As for the adult parts of the fandom (heh)... that's just scary. I don't like that.

  • I enjoy(ed*) the show for its character building and art style. Beyond that, I was super into the brony-created music and art scenes for a long time. It was like this crazy indie community where everyone was making unique stuff, except all of it was immediately approachable because everything was centered around MLP. That was pretty cool. I've never seen any fandom (or anything really) do that before.

I don't think I've ever told anyone they should watch the show. I've explained my interest in it to people who ask, but mostly it's just been something I've enjoyed with my wife and my friends who are bronies. The community can get a bit crazy at times, but that's the same with any fandom.

As for the rule 34 stuff...I hate to break it to you, but I'm pretty sure Pokémon still has waaaaay more. You just don't hear about it as much because Pokémon isn't as new or controversial as ponies.

*The show now seems to devote most of its energy to making Twilight the center of attention, completely upsetting the excellent dynamic they had going between the main characters.

  • Santalune Forest, this isn't the case of a "calm down" thread. Harley explained her reasons for posting this thread and politely asked you to calm down because you were getting riled up. Not only that, but there haven't been any overly negative comments in this thread. There's nothing to get heated over. If there was something you found offensive, you are free to report it, however the discussion is fair and it's meant to discuss the Brony Community because it's such a prominent thing in pop culture, not meant to shame anyone as highlighted in the first post.

If you have any other concerns, you're free to message me or Livewire about it, but for now, if you or anyone else is not going to contribute to the discussion, please refrain from posting. Thank you.

My friend was a brony and that's pretty much how I started watching. Other than that I never would have started but I like the show and have even made some OCs and a ponysona for myself (I have a -sona for pretty much everything I like). My dad even commented that the show was fairly entertaining. As long as someone isn't making some of that disgusting clop Rule 34 I think it's fine to like that show.

  • We could always look at this from the other side, by which I meant why do some people hate and I mean reeeeally hate Bronies.
If people don't like things its fine, they can just ignore it or try to understand why people are bronies (like Harley has done with this thread) but when people just hate on things because they have nothing bettter to do that's what I don't get, of course it applies to haters and trolls of anthing, I just don't get the benifit people get from hating, are they so insecure or somthing =p.

If there's anything everyone can agree on, it's that some Bronies are very talented

    Spoiler:

Says a lot about the fandom when the quality of their work looks better than that of the company that made it

I am very amused by people who waste time hating the fandom instead of, oh, I don't know, not looking at something they dislike?
They could be doing something productive, like curing cancer, but nah, gotta go hate on some pastel ponies

I myself hate many things with the fury of a thousand suns, but I don't go around raving about it

  • i personally hate Bronies because i feel they give the wrong image no offense but they just don't fit into that category as mlp is one thing girls love and girls can relate to and im not saying that its wrong to be one but it's weird to see one. I would like to know one thing and that why is it that you bronies are what you are as in why do you like the show so much? if someone could answer that with a good reason then i may change my mind on them but for now, bronies to me are a failed product of manhood and lack masculinaty

i'm curious as to why a lack of manhood/masculinity is a bad thing

  • I will never understand why the brony fandom is so widely criticized. Most of the things about it's fanbase or the show itself apply to pretty much every fandom or cartoon. If anybody older than 18 (or even younger maybe) criticizes MLP on this site, then they are being a hypocrite.

I became a brony out of boredom. I remember watching some G3 when i was a kid, and during the summer when i was bored and had nothing to do i just decided to do the marathon of Season 1 (only season back then) to see why people liked it so much. I don't really have anything special to say about it (other than DISCORD IS AWESOME, or that the brony community i'm in is very friendly), but i still watch episodes now and then, mostly new ones as they come out. It's a slice of life cartoon, while everything else i watch has a developing story, so it was a refreshing change.

  • I guess you can say Bronies are the odd ball fan base for mlp, many shows have had this before, but none before the "social media" era. Mlp has been around since the 80's and that it only really got popular with males now is confusing, but all in all, Bronies don't bother me really, as long as their obsession does not go to the stage of Hentai of MLP it's fine. No harm done, but once that happens you just entered to creepy zone.

What do you mean by manhood/masculinity? I find the stereotypical modern idea of masculinity to be sooo boring, having to like football or other sport (Not that there is anything wrong with enjoying Football or sport its the vulgar loutish banter and hate towards other teams I hate), drinking copious amounts of alcohol acting like a neolithic lout or whatever.

Why can't men like nice things or things considered "feminine"? I don't know why there is still this culture of hate and fear towards this, are some men so insecure they think they have to live up to a set idea of manhood?

Most Bronies are pretty thick skinned I think, some are quite happy to let everyone know and not care what people think whereas some prefer to keep it secret unless they know they can trust who they tell.

well what i mean by masculinity is that there are certain attributes that make a woman a woman and a man a man and its ok to like those things but its indirectly selfish to other men as your portraying them in the wrong way and in basic terms, shaming men worldwide. You can still carry on being a bronie but you must express this so openly as many people are insecure (which is a bit of a misconception you bronies) but do not want to have put up with bronies because the real reason why is because we think your immature and haven't realized your social appearance is disgusting to some and shameful to others and even if you try to ignore this, you must face the fact that you bronies aren't welcome in your society and that people like me silently put up with you and only a few actually don't care or even consider what you are doing

p.s if i hurt your feelings plz let me know as i don't want any trouble between us and thx for replying (you too harley)

Sooooooooo if I'm reading this right, you're basically saying that no one should deviate from traditional societal norms because it makes conformists uncomfortable?

That's not something I can really agree with.....

Admittedly yes there are definite biological and physiological differences. However I think many ideas about what makes a man a man or woman a woman are artificial creations of society rather than natural set rules.
Also I don't understand what you meant by selfish and shaming it almost sounds like something one would find in propaganda of an extreme political dictatorship.

    .

Id hardly consider myself a hardcore bronie, I only talk about the show to people who are interested as I do not wish to bore people who aren't. Also I don't really care what other people think of me, am not out to win the approval of the masses.

p.s if i hurt your feelings plz let me know as i don't want any trouble between us and thx for replying (you too harley)

No worries, If you don't like something their is nothing wrong with questioning it, that's what debate is all about.
