In 5-4 decision, Supreme Court legalizes Same-sex Marriage

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has declared that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the United States.

Gay and lesbian couples already can marry in 36 states and the District of Columbia. The court's ruling on Friday means the remaining 14 states, in the South and Midwest, will have to stop enforcing their bans on same-sex marriage.

The outcome is the culmination of two decades of Supreme Court litigation over marriage, and gay rights generally.

Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the majority opinion, just as he did in the court's previous three major gay rights cases dating back to 1996.

Yeah pretty much my thoughts on this.

People on my facebook are all "Finally equality!!" and there's still a long way to go, especially for trans people. Good news to hear though. :)

This is really cool news. It's always nice to hear the world become more accepting. I find it so weird that the Netherlands were the first country to legalize it, and that only happened in 2001.

Thank Christ for that. The fight for equality isn't over by a longshot, either in the US or in the world, but this is a massive morale boost for the side backed by justice.

As happy as I am for same-sex couples to finally be allowed to establish income sharing contracts, I have to cast a somewhat worrying shadow on the 5-4 decision.

These are becoming too common lately, to the point where I'm convinced SCOTUS just flips a coin to decide a case, then randomly decides the 4 dissenters.

If I'm wrong about the whole "coin flip" thing, then the fact that this was decided at 5-4 and not 9-0 is fucking frightening to me, because it means 4 judges on SCOTUS think something this police state is a good idea.

A friend of mine posted this on Facebook and I truly want to share it:

"For those who think the gay marriage decision has anything to do with permission to love someone or permission to hold a ceremony to dedicate your life to someone, you are missing the point entirely. You don't need permission to love someone. This is an issue of contracts and who has a right to make them between people. This is ultimately why I want government out of marriage, because people should be free to form a contract with whomever they want or however many people they want so long as those involved are voluntary participants. Here is the thing though. So long as government is involved in marriage then there is no reason why all people shouldn't get equal treatment under the law. Ultimately, I'd love to work towards government getting out of marriage all together, but today I'll be happy for my friends."

i'm very happy this has happened but i fear that the many straight allies who have waited for this moment as well will just get up and leave and have a whole "my work is done" attitude. while this is a monumentous decision, the fight is not yet over, and i hope that not only does the movement continue to fix inequalities amongst the lgbtqa+ community, but the opinions expressed today move on to other countries as well who have not embraced lgbtqa+ rights.
